00:03:36.000 and this is the fact that chapter 3, 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:38.000 Mark's Gospel. 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:43.000 Here we see Jesus as just being to the synagogue of the local church, 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:49.000 and he has been challenging the teaching and the tradition of the Pharisees, 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:51.000 the religious people. 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:53.000 So much so, 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:55.000 chapter 3, verse 6, 00:03:55.000 --> 00:04:04.000 that the Pharisees went out and began to stop with the colonial river of the religious people. 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.000 How they might kill Jesus. 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:10.000 So there is this stop, 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:16.000 there is this attempt to be now for religious people to get the greatest of Jesus. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:18.000 Now in chapter 7, 00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:22.000 it is reached the point where news has been to the flowering, 00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:23.000 and where it went to the church, 00:04:23.000 --> 00:04:27.000 that Jesus is still attacking huge giants. 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:33.000 The last report has mentioned a figure of at least 5,000 people. 00:04:33.000 --> 00:04:35.000 I've been told them all. 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:40.000 So a meeting has been called, it seems, at HQ back in Jerusalem, 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:45.000 and it's decided to send their very best lawyers and professors 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:48.000 to come down and sort Jesus out. 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:50.000 So chapter 7, verse 1. 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.000 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law, 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:55.000 who had come from Jerusalem, 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:58.000 so they've traveled a distance of about 80 miles. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:01.000 That's a long way when you haven't got a bicycle or a car. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:03.000 They've walked this way, 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:06.000 so important they want to get to Jesus and sort him out. 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:08.000 They gather around Jesus, 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:15.000 and they saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were unclean, 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:18.000 that is, unwashed. 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:21.000 This is their big chance. 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:25.000 Disciples with unwashed hands. 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:27.000 Look at verse 5. 00:05:27.000 --> 00:05:31.000 So the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, they asked Jesus, 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:36.000 Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders, 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:41.000 instead of eating their food with unclean hands? 00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:45.000 Now we've got to get this clear right at the very beginning, 00:05:45.000 --> 00:05:50.000 otherwise we're not going to make sense of what this passage is all about. 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:55.000 Their concern was not so much about a hygiene code. 00:05:55.000 --> 00:05:58.000 This was their holiness code. 00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:03.000 Their concern wasn't so much about washing their hands to get rid of bacteria. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:08.000 It was a religious duty that they performed 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:14.000 in the hope that they could be made clean before God. 00:06:15.000 --> 00:06:17.000 Spiritually clean. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:20.000 Now at one level the Pharisees, the religious people are right, 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:24.000 because we all need to be made clean before God. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000 But the problem isn't about being clean, 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:31.000 but how we are made clean. 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:34.000 How we are made clean. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.000 That's the critical issue. 00:06:35.000 --> 00:06:40.000 And it's so important to Jesus that he will publicly confront 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:42.000 and challenge the religious leaders, 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:46.000 because their teachings and their tradition are in conflict 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:51.000 in conflict with who Jesus is, what he says, and what he has come to do. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:53.000 So he must expose them for who they are. 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:56.000 And this is what he says about them. 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:57.000 Look at verse 6. 00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:59.000 He says, 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:02.000 Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. 00:07:03.000 --> 00:07:06.000 In other words, they're people who put on a mask. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000 They're people who just act out their faith. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:12.000 It's not a real faith. 00:07:12.000 --> 00:07:15.000 As it is written, these people honour me with their lips. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:17.000 They talk about Jesus. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:18.000 They talk about God. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:21.000 But their hearts are far from me. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.000 They worship me in vain. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:29.000 Their teachings are but rules taught by men. 00:07:29.000 --> 00:07:32.000 So in strong language, Jesus is warning us 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:37.000 about trying to make ourselves clean before God 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 by simple rules and tradition. 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:47.000 So first, why do we want to be clean? 00:07:49.000 --> 00:07:51.000 Well, this issue is of critical importance 00:07:51.000 --> 00:07:54.000 because all of us want to be clean. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:08:00.000 I don't think there's one person here this morning, myself included, 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:06.000 who doesn't long to have their past erased and wiped clean. 00:08:07.000 --> 00:08:10.000 Because we all carry around with us hidden secrets, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:14.000 things that bring with it feelings of guilt and shame 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:20.000 that we wish we could somehow wash away, never to bother us again. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:26.000 That's why all the major religions of the world 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:29.000 have some practice of ritual washing. 00:08:30.000 --> 00:08:34.000 Think of the Hindus who go bathing in the river Ganges. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:40.000 They do it in their desire to be pure before their gods. 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:46.000 The Muslims, they'll wash their hands before going to prayer 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:50.000 or into the mosque in their pursuit of acceptance. 00:08:51.000 --> 00:08:55.000 Christian religions will baptise with water 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:58.000 in the hope of securing eternal life. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:01.000 And it's the same with the Jewish religion. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:04.000 Look at verse 3, chapter 7. 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:09.000 The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:13.000 unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing 00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:15.000 holding to the tradition of the elders. 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:19.000 You see, their tradition taught that the act of washing 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.000 kept yourself pure before God and acceptable before God. 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:29.000 You see, you could become impure by the kinds of food that you ate. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:33.000 The certain furniture that you touched 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:36.000 and certain people that you met or bumped into. 00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:38.000 They could all make you unclean. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:43.000 So, verse 4, when they came from the marketplace, 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:47.000 when they've been down to Dunn's stores or down to Tesco's, 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:49.000 well, they couldn't eat unless they washed 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:51.000 because you wouldn't know what food you touched 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:53.000 when you'd been shopping. 00:09:53.000 --> 00:09:56.000 And you didn't know who you'd been bumping into. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:58.000 You could have been bumping into somebody from a different race. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:01.000 And that would have made you unclean. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:06.000 And they observed many other traditions, 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000 such as the washing of cups and pitchers and kettles. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:12.000 Anything that could hold something 00:10:13.000 --> 00:10:16.000 had to be cleaned in a ceremonial way. 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:22.000 They went to extreme lengths to experience being clean. 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:26.000 But you see, it's not just religious people who long to be clean. 00:10:27.000 --> 00:10:29.000 Even irreligious people want to be clean 00:10:30.000 --> 00:10:33.000 because we've all got our own traditions to wash away, as it were, 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:36.000 our bad experiences and our dark secrets. 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:40.000 Some people try to wash it away through substance abuse. 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:44.000 Others, by immersing themselves into work and hobbies. 00:10:45.000 --> 00:10:49.000 Others put on a mask by dressing well 00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:52.000 and keeping their homes in pristine condition. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:55.000 It's a facade of cleanliness 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.000 which mirrors their inner longing to be clean. 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:06.000 Why is it that some people, after some physical or sexual experience, 00:11:07.000 --> 00:11:10.000 that they regret have a shower or a bath? 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:13.000 Because they feel dirty 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:16.000 and they want to be clean. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:18.000 They want to feel clean. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 And we all have the desire to be clean inwardly, 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:24.000 to be free from guilt and shame, 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:26.000 free from past secrets, 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:29.000 free from our condemning thoughts. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:32.000 And that's why Jesus is making such an issue of this, 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:35.000 because he wants to make it crystal clear to us all 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:38.000 the dangers of trying to make ourselves 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:40.000 inwardly clean, 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:42.000 by religion and by tradition 00:11:43.000 --> 00:11:45.000 and all these little rituals that we build up. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:48.000 He says, rather than actually clean you, 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:51.000 it's going to break you and destroy you. 00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:57.000 So how do we try to get clean? 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:00.000 Well, look at verse 8. 00:12:01.000 --> 00:12:02.000 He says, 00:12:03.000 --> 00:12:05.000 You have let go of the commands of God 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.000 and are holding on to the traditions of men. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:11.000 And he said to them, 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:14.000 You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:17.000 in order to observe your own traditions. 00:12:17.000 --> 00:12:21.000 Now we'll see in a minute that the word of God, 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:24.000 the gospel, is essential for being made clean. 00:12:25.000 --> 00:12:27.000 But like the Pharisees, 00:12:28.000 --> 00:12:30.000 we turn away from the word of Christ 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:35.000 and we turn to the traditions of our own. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:38.000 And we do this in two ways. 00:12:39.000 --> 00:12:40.000 We see it in verses 8 and 9. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:43.000 First, we reject the word of God. 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:44.000 We put it to one side. 00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:45.000 Look at verse 8. 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:47.000 He says, 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:51.000 You have let go of the commands of God 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:54.000 and are holding on to the traditions of men. 00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:56.000 Rather than accept the gospel, 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:58.000 rather than accept what God has to say, 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:01.000 we consciously reject the gospel. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:03.000 We put it to one side. 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:04.000 We say, It's not for us. 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:06.000 I don't want it. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:07.000 I don't need it. 00:13:07.000 --> 00:13:09.000 I can get clean another way. 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:12.000 So we reject the word of God. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:14.000 And then second, 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:17.000 we replace the word of God. 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:18.000 Verse 9. 00:13:19.000 --> 00:13:20.000 And he said to them, 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.000 You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:27.000 in order to observe your own traditions. 00:13:27.000 --> 00:13:29.000 So not only do we reject the gospel, 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:33.000 we replace it with something else entirely. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:35.000 We come up with another way. 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:37.000 There's another means that we can get clean. 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:41.000 We invent our own traditions to clean us. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.000 So in effect what he's saying, 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.000 we create our own gospel, 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:47.000 a man-made gospel, 00:13:48.000 --> 00:13:50.000 a set of traditions and religious practices 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:54.000 which have this veneer of cleanliness, 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:57.000 which gives the outward appearance that all is good, 00:13:57.000 --> 00:13:58.000 that we're all okay, 00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:05.000 while cleverly hiding the truth that is deep inside us. 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:10.000 Let me give two examples of this. 00:14:11.000 --> 00:14:14.000 First, our outward respectability. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:19.000 These are ways we create our own little gospels and religious practices. 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:21.000 First, our outward respectability. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:26.000 We create this tradition of places we can't go to 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:29.000 and people that we can't be with. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.000 In an attempt to keep clean, 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:35.000 we stay clear of those places 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:38.000 and those kinds of people 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:41.000 for fear that if we were with them 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:43.000 we would somehow become unclean. 00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:46.000 We would kind of be contaminated or something. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:48.000 So we want to be seen, 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.000 we're quite happy to be seen at the prayer meeting, 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:55.000 but we wouldn't want to be seen in the pub. 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:59.000 We want to be seen with respectable Christians, 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:02.000 the ones that don't mess up, 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:03.000 the ones that don't fail. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:07.000 But we don't want to be with the other kind. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:13.000 Now, if we don't adhere to these rules taught by men, 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:15.000 well then we're considered unclean. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:20.000 So there's this outward respectability that we want to put out. 00:15:21.000 --> 00:15:24.000 Second, there's this outward conformity. 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:30.000 Where we create a tradition of certain beliefs 00:15:31.000 --> 00:15:35.000 and a certain kind of behaviour that we must adhere to. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:38.000 And in a desire to maintain cleanliness, 00:15:39.000 --> 00:15:42.000 we must have a certain kind of theology. 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:45.000 And we must adhere to certain practices 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:48.000 according to your denomination. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:52.000 So we love to be seen with our new ESV, 00:15:53.000 --> 00:15:56.000 but, hmm, I wouldn't read from an NIV. 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:00.000 We want to be known as Reformed, 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:03.000 but don't call me a charismatic. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:06.000 Oh, I want to be a Baptist and do those things, 00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:10.000 but we're not going to mix with those kinds of people over there. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:14.000 Now, if we don't observe these man-made traditions, 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:16.000 because that's what they are, 00:16:17.000 --> 00:16:18.000 we are considered unclean. 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:20.000 We're not fitting in. 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:23.000 We don't fit the mould. 00:16:24.000 --> 00:16:26.000 And these two things of outward respectability, 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:28.000 outward conformity, 00:16:29.000 --> 00:16:31.000 they give this lovely veneer of cleanliness, 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:34.000 an outward appearance that everything is good. 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:38.000 My lifestyle is so pure. 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:40.000 Just look at me. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:42.000 And my theology is just so sound. 00:16:43.000 --> 00:16:44.000 Listen to me --> 00:17:31.000 the teachings and the traditions of men. 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:35.000 In an attempt to get clean and keep clean, 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:37.000 we not only reject God's Word, 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:41.000 we replace it with something else entirely. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:44.000 We push the Gospel of Jesus Christ to one side 00:17:45.000 --> 00:17:46.000 and say, I can get clean another way, 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:49.000 and I'm going to create my own Gospel, 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:50.000 my own tradition, 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:51.000 my own way. 00:17:58.000 --> 00:17:59.000 Well, somebody doesn't agree up there anyway. 00:18:02.000 --> 00:18:06.000 So what is it that makes us really unclean? 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:11.000 Well, the real danger of tradition 00:18:11.000 --> 00:18:18.000 is that it stops us getting to the heart of the problem. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:25.000 And the heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:48.000 The problem is internal. 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:50.000 It's our hearts. 00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:56.000 And the heart isn't just this organ inside our bodies just for pumping blood all 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.000 online porn, 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:35.000 theft, 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:39.000 misusing the resources that God gives us. 00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:42.000 Murder, 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:46.000 hating other people. 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:49.000 Adultery, 00:19:51.000 --> 00:19:54.000 the way we even look at the opposite sex. 00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:57.000 Greed, 00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:01.000 never content and wanting more. 00:20:02.000 --> 00:20:03.000 Malice, 00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:06.000 immoral behaviour. 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:08.000 Deceit, 00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:11.000 telling those porkies and lies. 00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:13.000 Lewidness, 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:19.000 pursuing pleasure through lust. 00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:21.000 Envy, 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:24.000 wanting what other people have. 00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:26.000 Slander, 00:20:27.000 --> 00:20:31.000 tearing people down in our conversations to each other. 00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:33.000 Arrogance, 00:20:33.000 --> 00:20:38.000 always thinking that I'm right. 00:20:39.000 --> 00:20:41.000 And folly, 00:20:42.000 --> 00:20:46.000 living life without reference to God. 00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:55.000 All these evils come from inside and make a person unclean. 00:20:56.000 --> 00:20:57.000 Now, 00:20:57.000 --> 00:20:59.000 Jesus couldn't be clearer. 00:21:00.000 --> 00:21:04.000 He's saying it's not people and places that make you unclean. 00:21:05.000 --> 00:21:09.000 It's not beliefs and behaviours that make you unclean. 00:21:10.000 --> 00:21:11.000 It's our rotten hearts. 00:21:11.000 --> 00:21:12.000 It's our rotten hearts. 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:16.000 The source of all of our actions and our attitudes, 00:21:17.000 --> 00:21:18.000 they come from the inside. 00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:22.000 He says our hearts are like a pool of pollution 00:21:23.000 --> 00:21:25.000 and everything that flows out of our lives, 00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:27.000 every thought, every action, every attitude, 00:21:28.000 --> 00:21:31.000 it begins to contaminate and begins to affect. 00:21:31.000 --> 00:21:35.000 And we can all look so clean. 00:21:36.000 --> 00:21:39.000 I mean, we all look pretty clean this morning, don't we? 00:21:40.000 --> 00:21:43.000 We've all had our showers and new clothes on. 00:21:43.000 --> 00:21:50.000 We can all give this appearance of being clean in the way we talk to one another. 00:21:51.000 --> 00:21:54.000 And we'll go into this coming week acting very clean. 00:21:54.000 --> 00:21:55.000 We're all good at it. Now Jesus is not just exposing our hearts. 00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:09.000 He's not kind of tearing us open 00:22:10.000 --> 00:22:12.000 to leave us feeling more guilty and more ashamed. 00:22:12.000 --> 00:22:14.000 This is not a kind of like beat you up session 00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:16.000 where you're going to be kicked around the place 00:22:17.000 --> 00:22:19.000 because you feel bad enough already 00:22:20.000 --> 00:22:21.000 and now I'm just going to be kicked around and punched even more 00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:23.000 because I'm just so awful. 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:25.000 Yet we --> 00:25:27.259 But what he's really saying is, by listening to me, you're listening to God's words. 00:25:28.420 --> 00:25:37.960 If you listen to my words, if you hear me, my words are going to And if you touched the person, you became unclean. 00:25:59.980 --> 00:26:04.440 And you had to go through a week of ceremonial washing to make yourself right again. 00:26:05.140 --> 00:26:09.000 So this man with leprosy, we're in verse 40 of chapter 1. 00:26:09.039 --> 00:26:12.079 A man with leprosy came to Jesus and begged him on his knees. 00:26:12.079 --> 00:26:16.539 If you are willing, you can make me clean. 00:26:18.019 --> 00:26:22.899 Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. 00:26:22.980 --> 00:26:24.439 An act of solidarity. 00:26:26.179 -->
