00:10:48.460 --> 00:10:50.580 In Mark 7, and this is the clincher, 00:10:51.580 --> 00:10:54.840 Jesus pronounces all food clean, including wine. 00:10:56.100 --> 00:10:56.539 Why? 00:10:56.539 --> 00:11:02.120 Because it's not what you eat or drink that makes you dirty in God's eyes. 00:11:03.240 --> 00:11:07.819 It's what comes out of your heart that makes you dirty in God's eyes. 00:11:08.759 --> 00:11:11.319 Our problem is not what comes in us. 00:11:11.639 --> 00:11:15.079 It's our problem what's already in us and comes out of us. 00:11:15.620 --> 00:11:16.399 Sinful hearts. 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:19.099 Wine's not the problem. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:22.079 The problem resides in our hearts. 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.240 So Paul's not forbidding wine here. 00:11:24.440 --> 00:11:28.040 He's forbidding the sinful use of wine here. 00:11:28.860 --> 00:11:31.080 Getting drunk with wine. 00:11:32.600 --> 00:11:37.080 Or any other alcoholic beverage for that matter. 00:11:39.720 --> 00:11:44.120 And so the influential agent here is Paul kind of looks at wine, 00:11:44.120 --> 00:11:49.320 but we realize that the problem is much more deeper than wine. 00:11:49.399 --> 00:11:50.340 It's our hearts. 00:11:52.340 --> 00:11:55.519 And then he goes and talks about the goal, 00:11:56.360 --> 00:11:57.460 that which is forbidden. 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:01.860 The command is do not get drunk with wine. 00:12:03.460 --> 00:12:06.299 Your Bible has quite a bit to say about drunkenness. 00:12:07.259 --> 00:12:09.680 And Christians must not get drunk. 00:12:09.820 --> 00:12:11.560 And the question becomes why not? 00:12:11.559 --> 00:12:13.539 Why not get drunk? 00:12:14.439 --> 00:12:16.179 Well, I've got three reasons for you. 00:12:16.579 --> 00:12:18.919 The last one I find to be the most compelling. 00:12:19.839 --> 00:12:20.500 Here's number one. 00:12:21.379 --> 00:12:23.559 Getting drunk leads to a loss of self-control. 00:12:24.539 --> 00:12:27.339 And God doesn't want his people losing control of themselves. 00:12:27.839 --> 00:12:30.699 Rather, God wants his people growing in self-control. 00:12:32.000 --> 00:12:33.939 It is a fruit of the Spirit. 00:12:33.940 --> 00:12:41.840 God doesn't want something other than himself directing the lives of his people. 00:12:43.100 --> 00:12:45.120 Controlling the lives of his people. 00:12:47.120 --> 00:12:52.200 And so the reason, number one, Christians shouldn't get drunk is a loss of self-control. 00:12:52.340 --> 00:12:53.940 And God wants to do the very opposite in us. 00:12:54.020 --> 00:12:55.760 He wants us to grow in self-control. 00:12:55.759 --> 00:13:03.120 The second reason why Christians shouldn't get drunk is getting drunk leads to the impairing of your judgment. 00:13:05.819 --> 00:13:06.460 Brawling. 00:13:07.360 --> 00:13:08.559 Beer goggling. 00:13:10.039 --> 00:13:10.559 Boasting. 00:13:12.340 --> 00:13:15.240 Did you know that in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, 00:13:15.240 --> 00:13:21.220 a person is disqualified from being an elder or a deacon in the church 00:13:21.220 --> 00:13:24.639 if they are a drunkard or addicted to much wine? 00:13:26.340 --> 00:13:30.159 It evidences not only just a lack of self-control, 00:13:30.840 --> 00:13:34.700 but it also reveals impaired judgment. 00:13:35.879 --> 00:13:39.120 God doesn't want people with impaired judgment leading his church. 00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:40.539 It's a recipe for disaster. 00:13:41.580 --> 00:13:44.560 God wants us to be sober-minded. 00:13:45.240 --> 00:13:47.240 God wants us to be sober-minded. 00:13:47.240 --> 00:13:50.440 The last reason, and I find the most compelling, 00:13:50.960 --> 00:13:53.440 why we should not get drunk is this. 00:13:55.279 --> 00:13:59.080 Drunkenness is a characteristic of those who are living in darkness. 00:14:00.980 --> 00:14:04.860 If Christians are getting drunk, it makes for a very confusing witness. 00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:11.980 Getting drunk is part of a lifestyle of those who are darkened in their understanding 00:14:11.980 --> 00:14:15.620 and separated from the life of God because of the hardness of their heart. 00:14:16.060 --> 00:14:19.600 Getting drunk is a part of the old way of living. 00:14:20.240 --> 00:14:22.740 When God changed us, He delivered us, 00:14:22.940 --> 00:14:25.259 and He delivered us out of an old way of living, 00:14:25.320 --> 00:14:26.620 the former manner of life. 00:14:27.259 --> 00:14:28.700 Drunkenness, getting drunk, was part of that. 00:14:29.700 --> 00:14:30.460 It's called us out of it. 00:14:30.460 --> 00:14:40.759 In Ephesians 5.11, we read that we're not to participate in the unfruitful works of darkness anymore, 00:14:40.840 --> 00:14:41.740 but rather expose them. 00:14:42.460 --> 00:14:47.460 Drunkenness would fall under an unfruitful work of darkness. 00:14:48.379 --> 00:14:50.600 There's nothing good that comes out of it. 00:14:50.600 --> 00:14:57.379 By the grace of God, He's called us out of this lifestyle. 00:14:59.519 --> 00:15:05.220 Drunkenness is inconsistent with walking in a manner worthy of the calling to which we've been called. 00:15:06.860 --> 00:15:11.720 In other words, God is calling us to be habitually sober. 00:15:13.300 --> 00:15:15.000 And it sets us apart as Christians. 00:15:15.000 --> 00:15:21.080 1 Thessalonians 5.4-8, Paul is making a case. 00:15:21.259 --> 00:15:22.379 Jesus is coming back. 00:15:23.940 --> 00:15:25.899 And so he's saying, hey, don't live in darkness. 00:15:26.159 --> 00:15:27.299 You're not darkness anymore. 00:15:27.820 --> 00:15:29.460 Don't get drunk in darkness. 00:15:29.600 --> 00:15:30.700 That's what you used to be. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:32.379 So you know the light now. 00:15:32.620 --> 00:15:33.419 So be sober. 00:15:33.980 --> 00:15:36.299 It's a very sharp contrast between the two. 00:15:39.480 --> 00:15:43.919 It's safe to say that drunkenness is an unwise way of living. 00:15:43.919 --> 00:15:45.240 Ephesians 5.15. 00:15:46.419 --> 00:15:48.639 It's not making the most of the time. 00:15:48.959 --> 00:15:49.860 Ephesians 5.16. 00:15:50.639 --> 00:15:55.979 It's not understanding the eternal will of God to unite all things in Christ. 00:15:56.799 --> 00:15:57.740 Ephesians 5.17. 00:15:59.059 --> 00:16:01.099 Getting drunk is a big waste of time. 00:16:02.240 --> 00:16:04.019 With a devastating result. 00:16:05.399 --> 00:16:08.740 Which the Apostle calls debauchery. 00:16:09.579 --> 00:16:11.139 So we've looked at the agent. 00:16:12.079 --> 00:16:13.519 We've looked at the goal. 00:16:13.519 --> 00:16:14.319 It's forbidden. 00:16:14.539 --> 00:16:15.139 Don't get drunk. 00:16:15.899 --> 00:16:17.639 And now let's look at the result. 00:16:19.379 --> 00:16:21.480 The Apostle says, don't get drunk with wine. 00:16:22.960 --> 00:16:23.519 That's debauchery. 00:16:27.259 --> 00:16:28.620 Let me paint you two pictures. 00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:33.840 I want to help you see a biblical example of the debauched life. 00:16:33.840 --> 00:16:41.320 And then I want to provide for you a picture of the result of the debauched life. 00:16:42.780 --> 00:16:45.639 Do you remember the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15? 00:16:46.200 --> 00:16:46.740 Remember that? 00:16:46.740 --> 00:16:51.360 Jesus is just a brilliant teacher. 00:16:51.360 --> 00:16:53.240 The greatest of all teachers. 00:16:53.600 --> 00:16:57.639 And so he comes up with this parable to teach about God's heart for the lost. 00:16:57.639 --> 00:17:02.539 And in that story, in that parable, there are two sons. 00:17:02.639 --> 00:17:06.180 And the younger son, in a stunning act of arrogance, do you remember what he does? 00:17:07.139 --> 00:17:09.819 He demands of his father, hey, give me my inheritance. 00:17:09.819 --> 00:17:13.159 It was audacious. 00:17:13.779 --> 00:17:14.579 You know what he's saying? 00:17:14.919 --> 00:17:16.599 Dad, I wish you were dead. 00:17:17.259 --> 00:17:18.639 Give me what's coming. 00:17:20.220 --> 00:17:21.819 His dad gives him his portion. 00:17:22.019 --> 00:17:25.500 And that younger son, in this parable, journeys to a far country. 00:17:25.639 --> 00:17:27.799 In verse 13, we read this. 00:17:28.519 --> 00:17:29.059 Remember this?
