Bethany and he comes to the home of two sisters, Mary and Martha. 00:02:35.319 --> 00:02:37.419 And he comes and he has a meal with him. 00:02:37.479 --> 00:02:39.659 They invite him in to have a meal with them. 00:02:40.120 --> 00:02:43.280 And Jesus has obviously established a bit of a name for himself. 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:45.139 He is known as a miracle worker. 00:02:45.360 --> 00:02:47.599 Lots of miracles happening by the hands of Jesus. 00:02:48.079 --> 00:02:49.079 He's a great teacher. 00:02:49.199 --> 00:02:50.620 He's well honored and respected. 00:02:51.139 --> 00:02:56.219 And so it's a great honor for Mary and Martha to have this great teacher in their home. 00:02:56.219 --> 00:03:03.439 But for Martha, what's meant to be a great honor turns into a bit of a nightmare because everything is going wrong. 00:03:04.219 --> 00:03:08.840 It's not that she's burnt the food or spilled wine on her new dress or anything like that. 00:03:09.079 --> 00:03:11.939 The problem is that her heart is flustered. 00:03:12.099 --> 00:03:12.860 She's anxious. 00:03:13.039 --> 00:03:14.020 She's worried. 00:03:14.460 --> 00:03:15.579 She's even angry. 00:03:16.340 --> 00:03:22.360 And the reason is because her sister refuses to help her to do anything around the house. 00:03:22.360 --> 00:03:26.340 Look at what Luke tells us in verse 41. 00:03:27.160 --> 00:03:31.140 Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. 00:03:31.880 --> 00:03:38.960 I don't know if you've ever been in a setting where maybe a social setting or a business meeting where you've got a great listening to you talk. 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:12.660 Now, what Martha's doing here is obviously important stuff. 00:05:13.379 --> 00:05:18.300 It's important that when someone comes to your home, you host them well. 00:05:18.399 --> 00:05:20.399 You prepare a meal for them. 00:05:20.399 --> 00:05:24.879 It's kind of like if you go to the Nepali community in Hong Kong. 00:05:25.399 --> 00:05:34.239 Alan tells me that if you go to the home of someone in the Nepali community, it doesn't matter how full you are, they're going to give you more food. 00:05:34.379 --> 00:05:34.539 Right? 00:05:34.620 --> 00:05:36.219 They're just going to cook more food for you. 00:05:36.259 --> 00:05:37.379 It's part of the culture. 00:05:37.839 --> 00:05:41.560 If you come to their home, they're not going to let you leave without having fed you. 00:05:42.060 --> 00:05:43.039 And that's what's happening here. 00:05:43.139 --> 00:05:45.219 Martha, it's important to their culture. 00:05:45.419 --> 00:05:46.379 Jesus has come. 00:05:46.819 --> 00:05:48.279 Someone's got to prepare the meal. 00:05:49.040 --> 00:05:50.680 Martha here is not being a martyr. 00:05:51.259 --> 00:05:52.939 She's not doing something exceptional. 00:05:53.240 --> 00:05:56.339 She's just doing what would normally be expected of her. 00:05:57.159 --> 00:06:00.060 And yet, the problem is her sister's not doing anything. 00:06:00.579 --> 00:06:02.120 And that's got her frustrated. 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:06.779 But look at what Luke tells us is the real problem here. 00:06:07.420 --> 00:06:12.120 The problem is not just that Martha is overworked or that her sister is a lazy slob. 00:06:12.120 --> 00:06:24.639 The problem is that Martha's busyness, legitimate as it may be, has stopped her from actually receiving the one thing that she really needs in that moment. 00:06:25.620 --> 00:06:28.459 It stopped her encountering Jesus. 00:06:29.579 --> 00:06:35.939 In other words, saying that is Martha is so distracted by doing all the good things that she's doing, the things that need to be done. 00:06:35.939 --> 00:06:46.060 She's so distracted by all that's expected of her that she's missed who it is that's come to her house and is offering to minister to her. 00:06:47.259 --> 00:06:49.180 Look at what verse 40 says. 00:06:49.800 --> 00:06:52.279 Martha was distracted by much serving. 00:06:53.540 --> 00:06:55.439 It wasn't the serving that was a problem. 00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:57.620 It wasn't even the much serving that was a problem. 00:06:57.620 --> 00:07:08.660 The problem is that she was doing so much stuff for Jesus, it had distracted her from being with Jesus and encountering His grace. 00:07:10.660 --> 00:07:15.480 I don't know if you remember in Mark 4, Jesus tells a bunch of parables. 00:07:15.620 --> 00:07:17.420 And one of the parables He tells us, He says, 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:39.319 But do you remember how Jesus applies that? 00:07:39.319 --> 00:07:39.700 He says, 00:07:39.699 --> 00:07:59.459 Now in that case, Jesus is talking about the deceitfulness of riches and pleasure and that. 00:07:59.459 --> 00:08:02.659 But in love of his description, he says, 00:08:02.660 --> 00:08:12.560 Jesus is saying, 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:20.300 The case with Martha here is her preoccupation, her distraction with the cares of life, with all the serving. 00:08:20.920 --> 00:08:26.820 The problem of the good things is that they have the ability to distract us from the one thing we need. 00:08:27.700 --> 00:08:28.780 Receiving Jesus. 00:08:29.720 --> 00:08:30.740 Hearing from Jesus. 00:08:30.740 --> 00:08:33.200 Being ministered to by Jesus. 00:08:34.379 --> 00:08:36.740 And Martha here doesn't reject Jesus. 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:42.700 She's not like the Pharisees that are, you know, conniving how they can kill Jesus or destroy Him. 00:08:43.220 --> 00:08:46.399 She's not judging Jesus because He's eating on the Sabbath. 00:08:47.379 --> 00:08:49.220 Martha's not saying, Jesus has become so liberal. 00:08:49.899 --> 00:08:50.820 That's not a problem. 00:08:50.820 --> 00:08:55.759 The problem is she's become so busy doing all sorts of things for Jesus, 00:08:56.019 --> 00:08:58.419 doing what she thinks is expected of her, 00:08:58.419 --> 00:09:05.179 that she's distracted from coming and sitting at His feet and hearing what it is that Jesus wants to say to her. 00:09:08.779 --> 00:09:12.360 Now, what does this mean for us as a church? 00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:20.939 Friends, as a church, with all our doing, are we in danger of becoming more like Martha than Mary? 00:09:20.940 --> 00:09:27.000 Are we so busy doing, no doubt, important things that we don't know how to stop, 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:30.840 how to sit at Jesus' feet and to listen to His Word? 00:09:31.880 --> 00:09:35.840 Maybe a question for us is, when we leave church on a Sunday morning, 00:09:36.400 --> 00:09:38.860 have you encountered the living God? 00:09:38.860 --> 00:09:44.779 Have we worshipped Him and praised Him for who He is out of the overflow of what's in our hearts? 00:09:44.860 --> 00:09:47.840 Have we encountered the living Lord Jesus Christ? 00:09:48.279 --> 00:09:52.340 Have we been assured of our identity, that we are sons and daughters of God, 00:09:52.379 --> 00:09:57.320 that He loves us, not because of what we do for Him, but because Jesus died on the cross? 00:09:57.879 --> 00:10:00.340 Friends, do we leave church on a Sunday morning saying, 00:10:00.340 --> 00:10:05.440 I've done what was expected, I've paid my dues, I've served, I've done what Jesus wanted, 00:10:05.639 --> 00:10:07.040 now I can get on with my life? 00:10:07.680 --> 00:10:09.780 Or do we leave church on a Sunday morning saying, 00:10:09.960 --> 00:10:13.100 God is great, I'm His son, I'm His daughter. 00:10:13.720 --> 00:10:16.480 It's so good to come and meet with Jesus this morning. 00:10:17.840 --> 00:10:22.940 Friends, do we leave church on a Sunday morning anxious and troubled, worried and weary, 00:10:23.460 --> 00:10:28.259 or do we leave encouraged in the gospel, secure in the love of the Father, 00:10:28.259 --> 00:10:33.659 resting in the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing that our identity is in Him? 00:10:34.340 --> 00:10:37.039 And that's of course Sunday, what about Monday to Friday? 00:10:37.779 --> 00:10:40.720 Maybe on Sunday we feel encouraged and built up, we've seen our friends, 00:10:40.840 --> 00:10:44.620 but Monday to Friday are we anxious and worried about many things, 00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:49.000 or are we able to come to Christ's feet, day in and day out, 00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:52.639 and receive what Jesus wants to give us? 00:10:53.639 --> 00:10:55.580 Martha's problem was not that she was busy, 00:10:55.580 --> 00:10:58.259 it was that her busyness kept her from Jesus. 00:10:59.820 --> 00:11:02.900 Now, before we criticize Martha too much, 00:11:02.980 --> 00:11:05.740 we've got to recognize there's something that Martha does really well. 00:11:06.920 --> 00:11:12.060 The one thing that Martha does really well is that she takes her complaint to Jesus. 00:11:12.940 --> 00:11:14.700 She's obviously grumbling, a bit frustrated, 00:11:14.940 --> 00:11:17.180 but rather than going and grumbling to everyone else, 00:11:17.660 --> 00:11:21.480 rather than going and moaning about her sister to some other family member, 00:11:21.480 --> 00:11:25.360 the one thing she does well is she brings her complaint to Jesus. 00:11:25.920 --> 00:11:29.340 Except she doesn't receive from Jesus what she expects, 00:11:29.440 --> 00:11:32.039 because rather than receiving support or sympathy, 00:11:32.720 --> 00:11:34.139 she receives a lesson. 00:11:34.899 --> 00:11:37.600
