00:05:38.979 So let's see if we can make sense of this very difficult passage. 00:05:39.419 --> 00:05:40.979 1 Corinthians chapter 4. 00:05:41.959 --> 00:05:44.379 What is Paul trying to say to the Corinthians? 00:05:44.579 --> 00:05:47.099 And the question then is, what is God trying to say to us? 00:05:47.120 --> 00:05:49.139 Well, I think this is the big idea. 00:05:49.139 --> 00:05:51.000 Paul wants his readers to understand. 00:05:51.639 --> 00:06:02.899 He wants them to humbly receive the leaders that God has given them and to let these leaders help them, the Corinthians, to follow Jesus. 00:06:03.819 --> 00:06:07.099 So Paul is saying to the Corinthians, God has given you leaders. 00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:14.000 Receive these leaders and let these leaders serve you by calling you to follow Jesus. 00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:18.419 And if you think about that, isn't that what God would want to say to us? 00:06:19.139 --> 00:06:27.639 For us to humbly receive the leaders that he's 00:07:01.439 --> 00:07:02.219 His name is Jesus. 00:07:02.220 --> 00:07:05.540 And the rest are primarily body. 00:07:06.640 --> 00:07:11.280 And so even as elders and pastors, we have leaders called elders and pastors. 00:07:11.560 --> 00:07:22.580 And I, as I listen to this passage, need to receive the leaders that God has put in my life and help them to let them help me to follow Jesus. that. 00:07:31.259 --> 00:07:33.959 Okay, so that's what I think the big idea is today. 00:07:34.359 --> 00:07:40.579 God wants us to humbly receive the leaders he's given us and to allow them to help us follow Jesus. 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:44.379 Now, you may say, oh, church of Egypt, here we go again. 00:07:44.479 --> 00:07:48.240 Is there anything like more irrelevant and boring to my life? 00:07:48.240 --> 00:07:54.480 But I think there's two reasons why it's important for us to, why the Bible spends a lot of time talking about church leadership. 00:07:55.000 --> 00:07:55.980 The first is this. 00:07:56.840 --> 00:08:02.620 The Bible says that the church is not indispensable to one's Christian faith. 00:08:03.480 --> 00:08:05.660 And so it's easy for us to think, okay, it's me and Jesus. 00:08:05.860 --> 00:08:07.079 That's all that really matters. 00:08:07.180 --> 00:08:14.639 But the Bible actually says the church, the Christian community around us, is a vital part of our Christian faith, of us following Jesus. 00:08:14.639 --> 00:08:21.560 And therefore, how the church is structured and how God brings the church into our lives is very important. 00:08:21.639 --> 00:08:23.039 How we think about it is very important. 00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:25.180 But the second reason is this. 00:08:25.300 --> 00:08:40.000 If you've been around for more than a month in this world, you'll know of all the terrible stories of church abuse or church scandals or churches imploding that result from dodgy and bad leadership, right? 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:48.600 And so if we want the church to be healthy and strong, it's important that we understand what does the Bible have to say about church and how it's structured and church leadership. 00:08:49.299 --> 00:08:53.000 Okay, so in this passage, I think Paul's going to answer three questions. 00:08:53.679 --> 00:08:55.139 Who do church leaders serve? 00:08:55.779 --> 00:08:57.620 Secondly, what do church leaders do? 00:08:57.799 --> 00:08:58.700 Okay, that's a good question. 00:08:59.139 --> 00:09:02.360 And thirdly, how do they actually do what they are called to do? 00:09:02.580 --> 00:09:04.899 So let's dive in and see how we can answer. 00:09:05.000 --> 00:09:07.899 So firstly, who do church leaders serve? 00:09:07.899 --> 00:09:19.220 In 1970, an academic called Robert Greenleaf coined a phrase in his seminal essay called The Servant as Leader. 00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:23.379 He coined this now ubiquitous phrase, The Servant Leader. 00:09:23.899 --> 00:09:24.039 Okay? 00:09:24.579 --> 00:09:26.720 And for us, we yawn when we hear that idea. 00:09:26.879 --> 00:09:27.559 Servant Leader. 00:09:27.720 --> 00:09:29.740 Okay, we've all heard that concept. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:33.759 But in the 1970s, it was revolutionary and very new. 00:09:34.319 --> 00:09:35.600 Everyone thought, this is amazing. 00:09:35.600 --> 00:09:37.399 Leaders are actually servants. 00:09:37.899 --> 00:09:41.179 Now, of course, that idea has been around for forever, right? 00:09:41.279 --> 00:09:48.480 I think the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, I don't know if that's how you say his name, 5th century BC, he spoke about servant leaders. 00:09:49.100 --> 00:09:52.019 And of course, that's what the Apostle Paul is writing here. 00:09:52.360 --> 00:09:54.939 And so look what he says in verse 1 of our passage. 00:09:55.360 --> 00:09:57.279 I hope you've got your Bible or bulletin with you. 00:09:57.819 --> 00:09:58.159 He says, 00:09:58.159 --> 00:10:00.579 This is how one should regard us, leaders. 00:10:46.279 --> 00:10:48.639 They're not meant to be CEOs or presidents. 00:10:48.879 --> 00:10:51.539 They're not building their own brand or their own organization 00:10:51.539 --> 00:10:53.159 or their own empire. 00:10:53.620 --> 00:10:54.959 They are servants to the church. 00:10:55.439 --> 00:10:58.659 But they're also not democratically elected leaders. 00:10:58.799 -->
