--> 00:04:59.159 And so what we need to do with this commandment is that we look at the first few commandments that teach us to love God with all of who we are, all of our being. 00:04:59.160 --> the Ten Commandments because they seem so true and so proved in time and in history. 00:06:23.019 --> 00:06:27.420 So in looking at this commandment, how do we define murder? 00:06:27.579 --> it's not hard to convince people that murder is wrong. 00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:44.560 We can build a lot of bridges with people in our culture that murder is wrong. 00:06:46.079 --> 00:06:55.039 And even in Canada, we have laws that provide consequences for murder, despite the fact that they might be a little bit loose if we look at what the Bible says. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:06.340 But anyway, in a time when we're trying to avoid referring to the Bible, it's hard to come to a good conclusion of what is right and what is wrong. 00:07:06.960 --> 00:07:19.520 And in a time when the culture is shifting so quickly and deciding to put the Bible in a box or put it beside and not refer to it, it's difficult to come to a true understanding of right and wrong. 00:07:19.519 --> 00:07:30.519 And so when we open the Bible and we cross-examine our Canadian laws and what the Bible says, we'll probably come into a contradiction or some tension. 00:07:31.659 --> 00:07:39.959 And in fact, if we really look at it, we'll quickly see that in our age of moral relativism, there's a lot of conflict with what the Bible says. 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:43.180 So, first, let's define what is murder. 00:08:34.899 who got into some road rage with a cyclist and got out of his truck and took a bat and started beating the man. 00:08:35.340 --> 00:08:37.399 And the other man was full of blood on his head. 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:48.220 He was so angry that they both couldn't come to a right understanding of how they should divide the road and how they should drive and share the road together. 00:08:48.460 --> 00:08:50.759 And his anger led to that. 00:08:50.759 --> 00:09:03.279 And so, when we take revenge into our own hands and we continue that flow of anger that starts in our heart, 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:09.980 the conclusion, the logical conclusion of that is death, is taking death away or taking life away from the person. 00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:17.800 However, the opposite, withholding revenge, invites God into our circumstance. 00:09:19.300 --> 00:09:32.820 How tangible is the presence and power of God in our lives when our perpetrator expects retaliation, yet there is nothing, there is no retaliation but forgiveness. 00:09:32.820 --> 00:09:39.800 How powerful would God seem when we withhold revenge and show forgiveness? 00:09:39.799 --> 00:09:49.859 See, taking revenge in our hands is easy, but it does never repair the damage or the hurt that's already created. 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:57.939 And so, we see here that the Bible defines murder as killing a person for personal and illegitimate reasons. 00:09:57.940 --> 00:10:03.420 And you might be wondering, well, what about things like war or capital punishment? 00:10:04.640 --> 00:10:07.100 Well, we can't really go too deep into that today. 00:10:07.220 --> 00:10:08.740 There are other things we're going to look more in depth. 00:10:09.000 --> 00:10:17.040 But just very basically, the Bible says that capital punishment is a thing that can be done. 00:10:17.440 --> 00:10:20.000 It's talked about in Genesis chapter 9. 00:10:20.960 --> 00:10:23.520 And I was having a conversation with someone saying, 00:10:23.680 --> 00:10:27.340 you can't be pro-life because you Christians believe in capital punishment. 00:10:27.340 --> 00:10:30.560 I said, I never said that I believe in capital punishment. 00:10:31.399 --> 00:10:35.519 Like, I don't know if I would want to apply that in our land these days. 00:10:36.080 --> 00:10:38.980 But, so anyway, we got to talk about that. 00:10:39.139 --> 00:10:44.220 And the person was saying that's inconsistent, being pro-life and pro-capital punishment. 00:10:44.700 --> 00:10:45.720 But here's the thing. 00:10:46.360 --> 00:10:55.060 If we don't value the life of an innocent person to the point where we would take away the life of the one who took it away, 00:10:55.059 --> 00:10:58.719 doesn't that devalue the first life that was taken away? so, what about war? 00:11:10.199 --> 00:11:12.619 What about when two nations go to war? 00:11:12.699 --> 00:11:14.899 Doesn't the Bible say, do not murder? 00:11:15.019 --> 00:11:18.500 But then two pages later, it gives prescriptions on how to have war. 00:11:18.500 --> 00:11:20.600 Isn't there a contradiction there? 00:11:23.019 --> 00:11:29.720 Well, the Bible gives permission for nations to have the sword for justice. 00:11:29.940 --> 00:11:39.059 So, when other nations try to destroy innocent people or try to abuse and oppress those who are vulnerable, 00:11:39.059 --> 00:11:52.199 then another nation has the authority from God to come and establish his justice as long as they are following his path and following his rules. 00:11:53.659 --> 00:11:59.139 So, trying to understand all these nuances, I'm just giving a little bit so that when you look at the Bible, 00:11:59.539 --> 00:12:04.679 you'll be able to navigate through those pages in Leviticus and Numbers and Deuteronomy.
