in the eyes of the Lord. 00:00:35.679 --> 00:00:37.939 Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. 00:00:38.039 --> 00:00:38.980 Let's just bow our heads in prayer. 00:00:39.679 --> 00:00:44.280 Heavenly Father, as we come for a short time this morning to your word in the Bible, 00:00:44.380 --> 00:00:50.060 we ask and pray for your guidance and your direction to lead us into the truth. these things in Jesus' name. 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:16.519 Amen. 00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:32.759 So often when we come to stories in the Bible, we often put ourselves or humans at the heart of the story. 00:01:32.760 --> 00:01:37.719 So the flood is a good example of this. 00:01:38.320 --> 00:01:43.620 You know, when we think about the story of the flood or the ark, what do we think of? 00:01:43.620 --> 00:01:47.160 Well, so often it's Noah's ark, isn't it? 00:01:47.700 --> 00:01:48.840 It's the flood of Noah. 00:01:49.859 --> 00:01:55.280 As if somehow Noah is who the story is about. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:01.820 As if Noah is the one who's at the center of this account. 00:02:02.620 --> 00:02:05.180 But that's just not the case. 00:02:05.180 --> 00:02:13.060 The reality is that all of these stories, the whole of the Bible, is given to us not to tell us about Noah 00:02:13.060 --> 00:02:17.300 or to tell us about any of the characters in the story. 00:02:18.060 --> 00:02:23.580 But it's there to tell us about the God who is over it all. 00:02:24.400 --> 00:02:28.020 The God who is working and acting in all of it. 00:02:28.020 --> 00:02:37.120 It's not a story about the man who was saved so much as it's a story about God who does the saving. 00:02:38.460 --> 00:02:41.480 And so this morning I want us to think about this salvation. 00:02:42.080 --> 00:02:47.320 And I want us to think about the God of this salvation in Noah's experience. 00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:52.719 The salvation itself, we should be absolutely clear, it is gargantuan. 00:02:52.719 --> 00:03:01.819 We cannot begin to underestimate the scale of what's happened in Noah's experience. 00:03:03.219 --> 00:03:11.900 Noah is facing, if you're a fan of the movies, maybe the phrase an extinction level event kind of rings home with you. 00:03:12.419 --> 00:03:16.740 It's one of these moments in human history where everything is on the line. 00:03:17.280 --> 00:03:19.939 There is about to be complete destruction. 00:03:19.939 --> 00:03:24.180 And Noah, I think, knows it. 00:03:24.719 --> 00:03:29.079 When God comes to him and says, I'm going to destroy everything and I'm going to start over, 00:03:30.199 --> 00:03:33.099 Noah's fear must have been palpable. 00:03:36.180 --> 00:03:38.139 It's the worst of all possible times. 00:03:39.419 --> 00:03:44.360 It is a moment of extreme devastation. 00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:50.200 Everything that Noah knows, everyone Noah knows except his immediate family, 00:03:50.860 --> 00:03:58.260 is about to be blotted out of existence, washed away in the scale of this flood. 00:03:58.259 --> 00:04:08.099 And I'm sure today, all of us can probably go to moments in our lives where that has been almost the case. 00:04:08.739 --> 00:04:11.379 Where our life has felt like that. 00:04:12.120 --> 00:04:19.240 Where moments of absolute calamity and catastrophe are before us. 00:04:20.039 --> 00:04:26.659 Where it feels as if everything we know, even the ground under our feet, is being taken away. 00:04:26.660 --> 00:04:29.280 Maybe you're there right now. 00:04:30.620 --> 00:04:33.880 Maybe that's the way experience feels at this moment. 00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:45.720 And the question for us today is really the same as the experience of Noah in this flood. 00:04:46.860 --> 00:04:48.400 Where is God in all of this? 00:04:49.320 --> 00:04:50.200 Who is God? 00:04:50.199 --> 00:04:54.879 And how does God reveal himself in this? 00:04:56.319 --> 00:05:01.439 The first of the things that we can note is that God chooses Noah. 00:05:03.459 --> 00:05:07.019 That's one of the first things, actually, that happens in this account. 00:05:08.579 --> 00:05:11.659 God is set on judgment and destruction. 00:05:11.660 --> 00:05:20.180 And in the middle of all of this, God chooses to save Noah. 00:05:21.480 --> 00:05:23.120 And we could ask ourselves, why? 00:05:24.580 --> 00:05:29.220 Maybe it's because we think, well, Noah was the only good man around. 00:05:29.300 --> 00:05:31.300 And certainly that's what the narrative tells us. 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:34.180 Noah was a good man. 00:05:35.580 --> 00:05:37.600 Noah was someone who feared the Lord. 00:05:38.500 --> 00:05:39.940 He walked with God. 00:05:39.939 --> 00:05:46.379 His character was shaped by that experience of fellowship with God. 00:05:47.699 --> 00:05:51.259 So we could say Noah, in that sense, was perhaps a good man. 00:05:52.279 --> 00:05:57.879 And that might lead us to say, well, God, therefore, saves good people. 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:07.720 We might think to ourselves that God chose to save Noah because he was such a good person. 00:06:07.720 --> 00:06:13.640 And maybe as you look around the church today, you might see Christians around you. 00:06:14.420 --> 00:06:20.220 Some of whom, not necessarily all of whom, but some of whom are good people. 00:06:21.500 --> 00:06:23.440 They might be exemplary people. 00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:27.740 And you might think to yourself, well, that's what God does when he saves people. 00:06:27.740 --> 00:06:35.420 When the salvation of God comes into someone's experience, you might think, well, God saves good people. 00:06:35.879 --> 00:06:39.420 But that cannot possibly be the case. 00:06:39.720 --> 00:06:44.259 Because the Bible is full of stories of bad people who get saved. 00:06:44.259 --> 00:06:54.939 There are plenty bad sinners who discover the salvation and the grace of God. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:59.719 And that was the case in Noah's life, too. 00:07:00.539 --> 00:07:06.620 Because the verse that we tend to think says, well, God looked at Noah and saw a good guy and liked him and thought he'd save him. 00:07:06.759 --> 00:07:10.879 Is that verse, Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:18.699 And the way we read that is we tend to think, well, Noah was somebody that God chose to bless because he saw something in him. 00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:21.300 But that's not what the verse means. 00:07:23.219 --> 00:07:28.899 The word that's translated favor there is the word for grace. 00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:34.379 It's very close to the same idea we were thinking about actually last time I was preaching. 00:07:34.799 --> 00:07:40.659 When we were thinking about God out of his good pleasure, revealing things to us in salvation. 00:07:42.339 --> 00:07:48.359 What it's saying there is God took pleasure in saving Noah. 00:07:49.560 --> 00:07:51.739 In showing grace to Noah. 00:07:51.959 --> 00:07:54.459 God delighted in doing this. 00:07:54.459 --> 00:07:58.879 God was pleased to do this thing. 00:07:59.759 --> 00:08:02.120 It wasn't because Noah was offering sacrifices. 00:08:02.719 --> 00:08:08.039 It wasn't because Noah was, in any respect, an outstanding person. 00:08:09.159 --> 00:08:17.919 The initiative begins with God himself showing undeserved favor to a human. 00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:25.000 Noah, who, although he is perhaps better than many, is still himself a sinner. 00:08:26.460 --> 00:08:30.960 Is still himself someone who needs God's grace. 00:08:32.420 --> 00:08:33.779 Not deserves it. 00:08:34.460 --> 00:08:35.920 Not because he's earned it. 00:08:36.720 --> 00:08:38.860 But because he needs it. 00:08:39.680 --> 00:08:43.120 And God has chosen to show it. 00:08:43.120 --> 00:08:53.700 And Noah is someone who, in the face of this, has already experienced it in his life. 00:08:54.840 --> 00:08:59.620 Because long before the flood ever happened, Noah had been walking with God already. 00:09:00.740 --> 00:09:02.519 Noah had a relationship with God. 00:09:02.600 --> 00:09:04.080 A relationship of trust. 00:09:04.639 --> 00:09:06.399 A relationship of faith. 00:09:06.399 --> 00:09:12.120 The Bible tells us elsewhere that without faith it is impossible to please God. 00:09:13.480 --> 00:09:21.559 So Noah must have heard things of God passed down from his parents and grandparents and great-grandparents. 00:09:22.319 --> 00:09:26.819 A story that came to him of God being a God who saves people. 00:09:27.379 --> 00:09:29.319 That goes all the way back to Adam and Eve. 00:09:29.320 --> 00:09:36.200 And Noah was in a line of people who were believing God was a God who saves. 00:09:37.660 --> 00:09:40.560 And so when the story and the time and the news of the flood comes. 00:09:40.900 --> 00:09:43.280 When the news of ultimate judgment arrives. 00:09:44.000 --> 00:09:47.300 Noah is saved because he has trusted God already. 00:09:48.460 --> 00:09:55.160 He's already had faith in a God who offers salvation. 00:09:55.159 --> 00:10:00.779 And today that's what each and every one of us desperately need. 00:10:01.719 --> 00:10:08.439 We need to come to know and trust a God who offers salvation. 00:10:10.139 --> 00:10:16.199 I wonder, is that today the God you've come to meet and to worship in our service today? 00:10:17.159 --> 00:10:18.679 Is that why you're here? 00:10:18.679 --> 00:10:26.079 Are you here because you want to meet and love and know and hear of and long to know better? 00:10:26.959 --> 00:10:30.339 A God who brings salvation. 00:10:31.559 --> 00:10:32.799 Undeserved salvation. 00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:37.599 To men and women in the darkest of experiences. 00:10:38.959 --> 00:10:40.779 God chose Noah. 00:10:42.859 --> 00:10:46.059 Secondly, God taught Noah. 00:10:46.059 --> 00:10:57.099 See, I think sometimes we tend to have this idea that maybe God doesn't help us out enough. 00:10:58.899 --> 00:11:01.239 And some people I think maybe today think that way. 00:11:01.359 --> 00:11:04.639 They think, well, I know God is a righteous God. 00:11:04.699 --> 00:11:07.059 And I know God is going to send judgment on the earth. 00:11:07.659 --> 00:11:10.759 And I know that maybe even I will experience that judgment. 00:11:10.919 --> 00:11:13.019 I'm in danger of the judgment of God. 00:11:13.019 --> 00:11:15.620 But I just don't know what to do. 00:11:16.639 --> 00:11:19.059 I just don't know how to resolve this. 00:11:19.500 --> 00:11:20.699 I don't know what's needed. 00:11:20.840 --> 00:11:21.980 I don't know what's necessary. 00:11:22.539 --> 00:11:31.360 And what we need to remember is that the story of the flood is a story not of Noah working out what needs to be done to avert disaster. 00:11:32.439 --> 00:11:37.840 I mean, God doesn't leave Noah in that uncertain position where he can just figure out what to do. 00:11:37.840 --> 00:11:41.759 God says to Noah, you need to build an ark. 00:11:43.300 --> 00:11:47.500 And for Noah, that must have been really strange news because Noah had never seen an ocean. 00:11:49.220 --> 00:11:52.100 Noah had never really seen a large boat before. 00:11:53.500 --> 00:11:56.899 And you can go and see a mock-up of this boat today. 00:11:57.019 --> 00:11:59.060 I think Ken Ham's organization built one. 00:11:59.500 --> 00:12:00.300 I think it's in Kentucky. 00:12:00.299 --> 00:12:03.899 They obviously used a lot of modern construction techniques to build it. 00:12:04.359 --> 00:12:05.299 They needed cranes. 00:12:05.679 --> 00:12:07.179 They needed mechanical engineering. 00:12:07.620 --> 00:12:10.339 It is a huge feat of incredible engineering. 00:12:10.959 --> 00:12:12.879 And God said to Noah, that's what you have to do. 00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:21.719 And Noah, without any engineering experience, goes and does what God tells him to do. 00:12:21.720 --> 00:12:31.000 And the key thing here is, God showed Noah what to do. 00:12:32.019 --> 00:12:33.879 He didn't leave him in the dark. 00:12:34.940 --> 00:12:39.160 He didn't leave Noah to work out for himself what was necessary. 00:12:40.340 --> 00:12:44.680 God made Noah some instructions. 00:12:44.679 --> 00:12:49.599 And Noah, to the best of his ability, followed these instructions. 00:12:50.679 --> 00:12:54.500 He went and he got gopher wood, whatever kind of wood that is. 00:12:55.139 --> 00:13:00.899 And he covered it inside and out in tar to somehow make it waterproof. 00:13:03.399 --> 00:13:05.419 And he constructed this enormous boat. 00:13:07.639 --> 00:13:11.419 But the key thing is, God told him what to do. 00:13:11.419 --> 00:13:25.559 And today, when we're in the darkness of despair, confused about what we need to do to find and discover and experience the salvation of God, 00:13:26.259 --> 00:13:31.339 God does not leave us in the dark about what to do either. 00:13:32.500 --> 00:13:36.759 God does not leave us in a place where we can kind of flounder around, 00:13:36.759 --> 00:13:43.779 desperately trying to work out what's necessary for us to experience and discover salvation. 00:13:44.919 --> 00:13:47.319 He doesn't leave us in that darkness. 00:13:48.980 --> 00:13:52.159 Instead, he has sent light. 00:13:54.319 --> 00:13:58.639 For us, the instruction is not, go and build an ark for yourself. 00:13:58.639 --> 00:14:04.460 The instruction is, go and discover the ark I have built for you. 00:14:05.899 --> 00:14:11.620 Go and discover the salvation that I have completed for you with another piece of wood. 00:14:13.539 --> 00:14:14.580 With the cross. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:22.519 Because there, that cross, that wooden ark of salvation, 00:14:22.519 --> 00:14:26.960 I have done what is necessary there for your salvation. 00:14:27.740 --> 00:14:30.460 In fact, curiously, just the same as he did for Noah. 00:14:31.220 --> 00:14:34.740 Because I don't for one second believe that Noah's engineering skills 00:14:34.740 --> 00:14:39.460 were up to the task of building a 250 meter long boat of wood, 00:14:39.539 --> 00:14:40.559 having never built one before. 00:14:42.039 --> 00:14:44.939 The ark was not an effective means of Noah's salvation 00:14:44.939 --> 00:14:47.620 had God himself not intervened. 00:14:48.659 --> 00:14:50.360 Remember when Noah goes into the ark, 00:14:50.360 --> 00:14:52.460 we didn't read it, it's in chapter 7, 00:14:52.580 --> 00:14:54.039 but God, when he puts Noah into the ark, 00:14:54.120 --> 00:14:56.039 he says, you go into the ark now, 00:14:56.480 --> 00:14:58.399 and I will shut the door. 00:15:00.419 --> 00:15:02.440 I mean, God's salvation is in operation 00:15:02.440 --> 00:15:04.039 right the way through this story. 00:15:04.279 --> 00:15:05.500 Not Noah's ingenuity, 00:15:06.399 --> 00:15:08.360 not Noah's technical skills, 00:15:09.180 --> 00:15:12.539 but God's provision of security 00:15:12.539 --> 00:15:14.480 and protection for him. 00:15:14.480 --> 00:15:17.639 And once again, 00:15:18.279 --> 00:15:20.899 Noah has to respond to God's instructions 00:15:20.899 --> 00:15:23.759 with obedience and trust. 00:15:25.899 --> 00:15:28.060 And today, God hasn't left us in the dark 00:15:28.060 --> 00:15:29.060 in just the same way. 00:15:30.300 --> 00:15:31.240 He has said to us, 00:15:31.860 --> 00:15:33.279 if you want to one of these other moments 00:15:50.639 --> 00:15:51.860 of calamity in the Bible 00:15:51.860 --> 00:15:54.519 when the Philippian jailer 00:15:54.519 --> 00:15:56.839 comes trembling before Paul and Silas. 00:15:58.079 --> 00:16:00.519 The prison has been destroyed by an earthquake. 00:16:01.139 --> 00:16:02.439 He's fearful for his life 00:16:02.439 --> 00:16:03.939 because if the prisoners have escaped, 00:16:04.219 --> 00:16:05.419 his life is forfeit. 00:16:05.419 --> 00:16:07.579 He will have to die 00:16:07.579 --> 00:16:09.759 for these escaped prisoners. 00:16:10.860 --> 00:16:11.439 And trembling, 00:16:11.559 --> 00:16:13.039 he comes before Paul and Silas 00:16:13.039 --> 00:16:14.240 and he says, 00:16:14.339 --> 00:16:15.479 what do I have to do to be saved? 00:16:15.639 --> 00:16:16.759 His world is collapsing. 00:16:18.039 --> 00:16:19.740 And Paul and Silas say to him, 00:16:20.219 --> 00:16:22.299 believe in the Lord Jesus Christ 00:16:22.299 --> 00:16:24.000 and you will be saved. 00:16:26.959 --> 00:16:29.719 Today, the same instruction is there for us 00:16:29.719 --> 00:16:32.219 in whatever darkness 00:16:32.219 --> 00:16:35.120 and calamity we are experiencing. 00:16:36.360 --> 00:16:38.279 Whether it is the ultimate darkness 00:16:38.279 --> 00:16:40.120 and the fear and the calamity 00:16:40.120 --> 00:16:41.979 of our lostness before God 00:16:41.979 --> 00:16:44.639 or whether it is the experience of darkness 00:16:44.639 --> 00:16:46.459 and the consequences of sin 00:16:46.459 --> 00:16:48.339 and brokenness in this world 00:16:48.339 --> 00:16:50.079 and all of the different ways 00:16:50.079 --> 00:16:52.000 in which that manifests itself 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:52.860 in our experience, 00:16:53.419 --> 00:16:55.759 the solution that God provides 00:16:55.759 --> 00:16:59.759 and the pathway that he has shown us 00:16:59.759 --> 00:17:03.120 and the road that he lightens for us 00:17:03.120 --> 00:17:04.720 and directs us towards 00:17:04.720 --> 00:17:05.920 is the same. 00:17:07.420 --> 00:17:08.640 He says to us, 00:17:08.819 --> 00:17:11.680 believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:17:13.680 --> 00:17:17.259 Put your trust in my son 00:17:17.259 --> 00:17:24.160 because he is your ark of salvation. 00:17:24.160 --> 00:17:28.040 And we might say to ourselves, 00:17:28.180 --> 00:17:30.560 well, I don't
