00:04:46.439 And I want us to listen to this passage today, because this passage isn't just about leading, 00:04:46.439 --> 00:04:49.139 but it's about heart problems. 00:04:49.620 --> 00:04:57.060 And the Bible says that you and I, everyone in here, has a problem with our heart. 00:04:58.160 --> 00:05:00.079 That there's this hardness in our heart. 00:05:00.180 --> 00:05:01.620 There's this sickness in our heart. 00:05:02.259 --> 00:05:08.939 And the Bible warns us that if we don't deal with it, that if we don't recognize it and 00:05:08.939 --> 00:05:13.780 start making steps to fix it and to change it, if we don't do these things, that the potential 00:05:13.779 --> 00:05:15.719 for damage is massive. 00:05:15.779 --> 00:05:22.519 And the potential for damage isn't just a dead person, but it's a dead eternity. 00:05:22.519 --> 00:05:29.959 The potential for damage isn't just a dead heart, but it's a dead church. 00:05:32.180 --> 00:05:37.419 The potential for damage isn't just a dead pastor, but it's a dead reputation for Jesus 00:05:37.419 --> 00:05:40.019 in the community of Hong Kong. 00:05:41.019 --> 00:05:42.259 So I want to look at this passage. 00:05:42.379 --> 00:05:46.740 And you've got to realize that all the people in Scripture, everybody in here had heart problems. 00:05:46.740 --> 00:05:50.019 And Jesus is going to deal with the heart problems of his disciples in this passage. 00:05:50.699 --> 00:05:54.019 I mean, this passage is going to look at, it's going to compare two people's hearts. 00:05:54.120 --> 00:05:56.120 It's going to compare the disciples' hearts to Jesus' hearts. 00:05:56.360 --> 00:06:00.439 And it's going to talk about how we can change, how we can fix that problem. 00:06:00.540 --> 00:06:03.560 What can we do to make our hearts better? 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:07.840 And then after this, we're going to take communion together, because I think this is the perfect 00:06:07.840 --> 00:06:10.220 example, because this is kind of what was happening in this passage. 00:06:10.220 --> 00:06:15.540 Now, you've got to remember that in John 13, it is the final night of Jesus' life. 00:06:16.820 --> 00:06:19.380 Okay, so this is the final night of Jesus' life. 00:06:19.600 --> 00:06:23.780 For three years, he's been ministering, and now he's in Jerusalem, and he's come to sacrifice 00:06:23.780 --> 00:06:25.020 himself for us. 00:06:26.160 --> 00:06:29.900 Now, you don't see it in this gospel, but what you learn in the other gospels is that this 00:06:29.900 --> 00:06:32.840 event that we're going to say today is called the Last Supper. 00:06:34.220 --> 00:06:37.800 And so Jesus brings all his disciples together, they're going to have one last meal, and then 00:06:37.800 --> 00:06:40.460 within 12 hours, he's going to be hanging on the cross. 00:06:42.620 --> 00:06:46.460 Now, what we don't see in this passage, but what we learn in other scriptures and other 00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:50.100 gospels is this, that right before this happens, all the disciples are arguing. 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:56.819 All the disciples are arguing over this time, because they believe that soon Jesus is going 00:06:56.819 --> 00:07:00.720 to come, he's going to wipe out all the enemies, he's going to put up a kingdom, he's 00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:04.639 going to put up a throne, he's going to rule, and they want to rule with him. 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:10.300 And so the other gospels tell us that before this meal, before this sacred time, they're 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:12.060 arguing over who's going to be the greatest. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:15.539 They're not really arguing over who's going to be the greatest or who's going to be the 00:07:15.539 --> 00:07:18.319 best, because Jesus is the best and Jesus is the greatest, but what they're arguing 00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:21.099 over is who's going to be the second greatest and who's going to be the second best. 00:07:22.419 --> 00:07:26.879 And so you need to picture that as we come to the scripture, because this sets the theme 00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:28.699 in the stage for John 13. 00:07:28.699 --> 00:07:33.899 Now it's a Passover meal, when you came into a house in a Jewish culture, especially during 00:07:33.899 --> 00:07:35.659 Passover, two things would always be there. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:38.379 There would be a basin full of water and there would be a slave. 00:07:39.420 --> 00:07:43.920 And when you walked into the house, the slave in this culture, his job was to kneel down, 00:07:44.219 --> 00:07:48.339 take your sandals off, clean your feet, and make you ready for the dinner table. 00:07:49.319 --> 00:07:53.919 Now in this culture, when you're wearing sandals and dirty feet and people just throw trash 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:57.500 out on the road, the feet were like the worst part of your body. 00:07:57.699 --> 00:07:59.500 It was just disgusting. 00:07:59.759 --> 00:08:03.379 And so you always washed your feet when you came into the house, because if you didn't 00:08:03.379 --> 00:08:07.800 wash your feet, it would be terrible and it would smell bad and you'd have just refuge 00:08:07.800 --> 00:08:08.319 everywhere. 00:08:09.460 --> 00:08:17.100 In this passage today, what we see is that there's a basin there, verse 5, but there's 00:08:17.100 --> 00:08:18.160 no servant. 00:08:19.660 --> 00:08:21.340 There's no slave to do that. 00:08:21.339 --> 00:08:24.359 And so when the disciples come in, they're just mad at each other, right? 00:08:24.379 --> 00:08:26.839 They're disgusted with each other because they've been arguing and fighting over who's 00:08:26.839 --> 00:08:29.699 the greatest and who's better than them and who's going to serve and do all these things. 00:08:29.799 --> 00:08:33.299 And so they're just so mad and they're just so angry that they don't even think about 00:08:33.299 --> 00:08:35.299 washing their feet because no one else there is to wash their feet. --> 00:10:32.759 But it also says he loves these people. 00:10:34.259 --> 00:10:35.740 He loves his disciples. 00:10:35.740 --> 00:10:38.720 So he came into this world system. 00:10:39.159 --> 00:10:41.840 And the word in Greek there means a world that does not know God. 00:10:41.940 --> 00:10:43.159 A world that's opposed to God. 00:10:43.259 --> 00:10:44.720 A world that's anti-God.
