verse 15, it's thanks be to God for that indescribable gift. 00:00:57.840 --> 00:01:06.800 There's just no way that we can almost think of a word to describe the gift that God has given us in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:10.000 So he is worthy of all thanksgiving. 00:01:10.700 --> 00:01:16.140 And this evening we're going to think about the Lord and how worthy he is to be praised. sense of going on in worship of God. 00:01:28.299 --> 00:01:30.939 And you note at the beginning of the psalm, if you have a Bible, 00:01:31.579 --> 00:01:39.040 the ESV Bible in particular, it has a few words mentioning the context of the psalm before you come into verse 1. 00:01:39.040 --> 00:01:45.180 So it says there to the choir master, it's a psalm of David, the servant of the Lord, 00:01:45.800 --> 00:01:54.120 who addressed the words of the song to the Lord on the day when the Lord rescued him from the hand of all his enemies 00:01:54.120 --> 00:02:01.960 and from the hand of Saul, he said, and then it goes into his song from verse 1, 00:02:01.959 --> 00:02:04.719 I love you, O Lord, my strength. 00:02:04.779 --> 00:02:12.519 So the context is there given to us of a day when David was delivered from all of his enemies. 00:02:12.659 --> 00:02:19.459 And you can read about that in 2 Samuel 22, where you have this song mentioned as well. 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:24.859 And David has known victory over his enemies, 00:02:24.860 --> 00:02:29.960 a victory that maybe at one stage seemed impossible for him, 00:02:30.480 --> 00:02:32.840 as he saw his enemies all around him. 00:02:32.900 --> 00:02:39.220 And yet God has given him this glorious victory as he was running from Saul, 00:02:39.300 --> 00:02:41.420 as he was running from his enemies. 00:02:41.500 --> 00:02:44.040 He was in constant danger of death. 00:02:44.040 --> 00:02:46.740 But now he has been delivered from that. 00:02:47.160 --> 00:02:51.960 And he has this praise being offered up to God. 00:02:51.960 --> 00:02:57.300 And as we see there in verse 3, he is worthy to be praised, 00:02:57.400 --> 00:03:00.060 the God who has given him this victory. 00:03:00.740 --> 00:03:04.060 So this is David's song of victory. 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:09.819 But in many ways we could say it is our song of victory as well, 00:03:09.819 --> 00:03:13.379 because God has given us this song for us to sing. 00:03:13.960 --> 00:03:16.280 And we can sing these words ourselves, 00:03:16.280 --> 00:03:21.040 and we can sing them maybe with the same meaning behind them as what David had. 00:03:21.039 --> 00:03:23.599 When we know the Lord, when we love the Lord, 00:03:23.679 --> 00:03:26.519 we recognize just how he is our strength, 00:03:26.620 --> 00:03:29.039 how he is all of these things to us, 00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:33.419 and how he has given us victory in this world as well. 00:03:34.139 --> 00:03:39.479 Because when God saves us, he gives us victory over our enemies. 00:03:40.399 --> 00:03:44.780 And we think of the greatest enemies that we have in this world as a people, 00:03:45.219 --> 00:03:48.219 the enemy of sin, the enemy of death, 00:03:48.219 --> 00:03:50.379 the enemy of a lost eternity. 00:03:50.379 --> 00:03:52.039 We have all of these enemies. 00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:57.419 And yet as we look to the Lord Jesus and the victory that he has won for us, 00:03:57.819 --> 00:04:00.419 we realize what he has saved us from, 00:04:01.240 --> 00:04:04.300 and that we are saved by his grace. 00:04:04.300 --> 00:04:09.820 And so we, therefore, can sing this song ourselves with that sense of victory 00:04:09.820 --> 00:04:13.700 and see that worthy to be praised is God. 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:17.639 Worthy to be praised is the Lord. 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:23.540 We read in the New Testament, 2 Timothy 3, verse 16, 00:04:23.740 --> 00:04:27.540 that all Scripture is breathed out by God. 00:04:27.540 --> 00:04:32.040 So God has given us his word through various writers, 00:04:32.040 --> 00:04:34.819 as you see throughout the Bible. 00:04:35.460 --> 00:04:38.420 And so here we have David writing this song. 00:04:38.560 --> 00:04:42.220 As we read in Timothy, we're seeing that he is inspired, 00:04:42.340 --> 00:04:45.560 he is moved by the Lord to write these words. 00:04:46.960 --> 00:04:50.540 And you can almost think, well, is this not then God praising himself? 00:04:50.540 --> 00:04:58.520 It's not this God giving words, boasting words to David to write about him. 00:04:58.580 --> 00:05:00.060 But God is not that way. 00:05:00.960 --> 00:05:03.960 God isn't like some leaders we might see in the world 00:05:03.960 --> 00:05:06.460 who want all the praise for themselves. 00:05:06.620 --> 00:05:11.220 So they write their own way of look at me and what I have done. 00:05:18.120 --> 00:05:20.540 God inspired David. 00:05:20.920 --> 00:05:23.500 He was moved by the Spirit to write these words. 00:05:23.660 --> 00:05:27.360 But David inspired his writing from his own experience. 00:05:28.579 --> 00:05:32.540 He is writing these words, having known God with him. 00:05:32.939 --> 00:05:37.300 God is the one who has brought him David beginning his praise to God 00:06:06.519 --> 00:06:12.839 by expressing his love of God and what God has done for him. 00:06:12.839 --> 00:06:17.459 Then he proceeds to describe how much the Lord means to him 00:06:17.459 --> 00:06:20.199 by using different expressions there, 00:06:20.299 --> 00:06:24.000 especially in verse 2, of who God is for him. 00:06:24.699 --> 00:06:28.719 And as someone wrote, you could say he sees this as the Lord, 00:06:28.819 --> 00:06:32.459 the source of his strength, stability, safety, and salvation. 00:06:32.459 --> 00:06:38.939 All of these things come across in the way that David describes the Lord in verse 2. 00:06:39.019 --> 00:06:43.779 And then in verse 3, we see that God has proved himself reliable, 00:06:43.919 --> 00:06:48.099 that he --> 00:07:16.759 Can we sing that? 00:07:17.579 --> 00:07:20.139 Are we worshiping the Lord as we should, 00:07:20.219 --> 00:07:22.659 as he is worthy to be praised? 00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:25.919 One worship God? 00:08:14.080 --> 00:08:16.920 Well, that's what we see with David here. 00:08:16.920 --> 00:08:20.259 We see him worshiping, first of all, in verse 1, 00:08:20.379 --> 00:08:24.160 by delighting in God. 00:08:24.580 --> 00:08:26.980 He is delighting in God. 00:08:27.040 --> 00:08:31.140 He makes two declarations here in verse 1. 00:08:32.500 --> 00:08:36.680 He starts by first declaring his love for the Lord. 00:08:36.980 --> 00:08:38.860 I love you, O Lord. 00:08:38.860 --> 00:08:46.259 And then the second declaration is that absolute dependence upon the Lord as my strength. 00:08:47.700 --> 00:08:53.279 So from the outset of this psalm, he's indicating that as he lives his life here, 00:08:53.840 --> 00:09:00.259 these two great themes are what the manner in which he is living his life. 00:09:00.340 --> 00:09:02.759 They are constantly before him. 00:09:02.759 --> 00:09:07.319 And he's telling us this, that he finds his great delight in God. 00:09:07.439
