The book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD. 00:00:23.300 --> 00:00:28.500 It's called Romans because he writes it to the churches in the city of Rome. 00:00:29.160 --> 00:00:35.280 This letter is about the gospel. It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection. 00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:41.760 And we are working through chapter 8 which is about life in the spirit, that is the Holy Spirit. 00:00:42.359 --> 00:00:49.079 And last week we focused on verse 18 which talks about the new heavens and the new earth to come. 00:00:49.900 --> 00:00:56.100 You remember we saw that whatever we believe about the future determines our actions in the present. 00:00:57.020 --> 00:01:02.680 Paul reminds us then of our future hope of glory with God in heaven. 00:01:02.679 --> 00:01:07.799 The next couple weeks Paul is going to continue to talk about that future glory. 00:01:08.359 --> 00:01:13.560 This week it's that future glory as it relates to the natural world, to creation. 00:01:13.939 --> 00:01:19.159 So the mountains, the seas, the sky, the plants, the animals, the entire created world. 00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:21.579 That's our topic this morning. 00:01:22.000 --> precious than gold, even the finest gold. 00:01:44.980 --> 00:01:49.700 And that it is sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. 00:01:50.519 --> 00:01:54.900 And so that's why we read now Romans chapter 8 starting in verse 18. 00:01:54.900 --> 00:02:04.440 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be 00:03:50.859 --> 00:03:54.939 And next week is actually Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. 00:03:55.019 --> 00:03:58.000 And that's the Sunday before Jesus' death and his resurrection. 00:03:58.739 --> 00:04:03.680 And on that Sunday, Jesus enters Jerusalem, known as his triumphal entry. 00:04:03.919 --> 00:04:09.579 And it's called Palm Sunday because the crowds welcome him to Jerusalem waving palm branches. 00:04:09.580 --> 00:04:12.300 Now they don't just wave, they're also shouting. 00:04:12.480 --> 00:04:13.180 They say this, 00:04:13.760 --> 00:04:15.219 Hosanna to the son of David. 00:04:15.520 --> 00:04:18.199 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 00:04:18.860 --> 00:04:20.259 Hosanna in the highest. 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:24.120 Now you might be wondering, why in the world am I bringing up Palm Sunday 00:04:24.120 --> 00:04:27.699 as we talk about Romans chapter 8, verses 18 through 22. 00:04:28.139 --> 00:04:29.360 And the reason is this. 00:04:29.939 --> 00:04:33.120 All four of the gospels tell us about this. 00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:37.699 But Luke in chapter 19 adds a detail that no one else includes. 00:04:37.699 --> 00:04:45.060 In Luke's gospel, the Pharisees tell Jesus to tell the crowds to shut up. 00:04:46.500 --> 00:04:47.939 Remember, the crowd is shouting. 00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:49.779 They're not just waving palm branches. 00:04:50.259 --> 00:04:52.539 And Jesus has this famous reply. 00:04:53.439 --> 00:04:53.800 He says, 00:04:53.899 --> 00:05:00.759 I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out. 00:05:00.759 --> 00:05:06.620 Now there's an enormous amount of theology packed up in that one statement. 00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:08.920 Tells us something about worship. 00:05:09.339 --> 00:05:11.099 That is, God must be worshipped. 00:05:11.139 --> 00:05:13.240 If we won't, the rocks will. 00:05:13.980 --> 00:05:17.659 Which reminds us of how important our task is this morning. 00:05:18.420 --> 00:05:24.719 What matters for this passage is the relationship between creation and humanity. 00:05:24.720 --> 00:05:28.480 Some theologians explain it this way. 00:05:28.640 --> 00:05:35.080 In the book of Genesis, God places humanity as his representatives on earth. 00:05:35.260 --> 00:05:37.400 That there's this two-way representation. 00:05:38.200 --> 00:05:40.840 We represent God to his creation. 00:05:41.460 --> 00:05:45.040 And then we represent the creation back to God. 00:05:45.140 --> 00:05:48.400 So we are these stewards, these caretakers of the earth. 00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:54.459 And there's a sense that when we worship, we're actually representing all of God's creation. 00:05:55.120 --> 00:05:59.219 So the rocks don't have to cry out because we do. 00:05:59.859 --> 00:06:02.579 The point is this, as we look at Romans chapter 8. 00:06:02.959 --> 00:06:11.179 The destination of humanity and the destination of creation are tied up together. 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:12.539 Okay? 00:06:12.859 --> 00:06:14.599 Creation is not just accidental. 00:06:14.600 --> 00:06:20.540 It's a critical part of God's plan, his purposes for the world. 00:06:20.860 --> 00:06:23.140 So what does that have to do with Romans? 00:06:23.800 --> 00:06:26.980 Well, it's not just that we wait for the future glory. 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:30.360 That's what we looked at last week in verse 18. 00:06:30.660 --> 00:06:36.100 But the creation longs for it as well. 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:37.500 Verse 19. 00:06:38.020 --> 00:06:41.700 For the creation waits with eager longing. 00:06:41.699 --> 00:06:47.740 Now that Greek word for eager longing literally means a stretching of the neck. 00:06:48.779 --> 00:06:49.060 Okay? 00:06:49.159 --> 00:06:54.519 So creation is kind of straining its neck out to see what's coming. 00:06:55.439 --> 00:06:56.519 What's going to happen? 00:06:57.740 --> 00:07:00.599 When are the sons of God going to be revealed? 00:07:01.699 --> 00:07:05.000 The New Testament in modern English says it this way. 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:08.980 The whole creation is on tiptoe. 00:07:08.980 --> 00:07:21.540 So creation is standing up and straining its neck and looking, waiting, longing, groaning for God's redemption to come. 00:07:22.780 --> 00:07:23.319 Why? 00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:26.280 What exactly is it on tiptoe for? 00:07:27.080 --> 00:07:34.160 Well, verse 19 again tells us it is straining its neck to see the revealing of the sons of God. 00:07:34.160 --> 00:07:40.160 If you were here with us last week, you'll remember, or maybe even two weeks ago, that sons of God is inheritance language. 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:42.620 The sons are the heirs. 00:07:42.920 --> 00:07:50.980 So whether you're a man or a woman, if you're following Jesus in faith, you are in a sense a son of God. 00:07:51.680 --> 00:07:54.379 So there's these sons of God and there's going to be a revealing. 00:07:54.620 --> 00:07:56.120 That's what creation is looking towards. 00:07:56.440 --> 00:07:58.600 What is this revealing going to show? 00:07:58.600 --> 00:08:03.260 Well, it's going to be the glory that we talked about last week. 00:08:04.020 --> 00:08:06.400 So this revelation, there's going to be new bodies. 00:08:06.640 --> 00:08:08.439 There's going to be, we're going to be sinless. 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:09.840 Our addictions are removed. 00:08:09.939 --> 00:08:11.420 Our impurities are done away with. 00:08:11.500 --> 00:08:13.120 Our rough edges are gone. 00:08:13.400 --> 00:08:18.100 Everything we were made and created to be is realized. 00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:20.040 That's the glory. 00:08:20.180 --> 00:08:23.800 That's what creation can't wait to see. 00:08:23.800 --> 00:08:29.980 Now, Paul's ultimate point, and we'll talk about this a little bit more later on, is not about creation, actually. 00:08:31.020 --> 00:08:34.799 Paul's ultimate point is to encourage us. 00:08:35.399 --> 00:08:36.779 He's building on verse 18. 00:08:36.919 --> 00:08:38.360 Remember, verse 18 said, 00:08:38.779 --> 00:08:43.659 The sufferings of this present age are not even worth comparing with how great the future is. 00:08:44.740 --> 00:08:45.560 And you know what? 00:08:45.560 --> 00:08:52.259 The greatness of this future is impossible for you right now to comprehend how good the future glory is. 00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:53.360 This is what Paul's saying. 00:08:53.360 --> 00:08:56.320 But let me give you an idea of how good it is. 00:08:57.259 --> 00:09:03.180 The future glory is so good that even the trees can't wait to see it. 00:09:05.080 --> 00:09:11.879 The future glory is so good that the birds can't wait. 00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:24.559 And if the trees are on tiptoe, if they are stretching out their necks to see what it is that God is bringing to the entire world by virtue of his redemption, 00:09:25.360 --> 00:09:28.439 we should do the same. 00:09:30.200 --> 00:09:31.539 Creation can't wait. 00:09:32.639 --> 00:09:33.259 Can you? 00:09:33.259 --> 00:09:36.080 That's Paul's point here. 00:09:42.220 --> 00:09:47.480 Now, why does this revealing of the sons of God matter to creation? 00:09:47.480 --> 00:09:50.360 It is not just a spectator sport. 00:09:51.159 --> 00:09:55.360 Verse 20 states it negatively, and then verse 21 positively. 00:09:55.360 --> 00:09:56.940 So first, verse 20, 00:09:58.000 --> 00:10:01.759 For the creation was subjected to futility. 00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:05.440 Paul is saying creation is hurting. 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:11.539 Entire species of animals go extinct. 00:10:13.320 --> 00:10:17.220 Oceans are polluted by oil spills. 00:10:17.220 --> 00:10:21.200 Oceans, crops are lost to drought. 00:10:22.279 --> 00:10:24.860 So on and on and on. 00:10:25.680 --> 00:10:26.800 And we know why. 00:10:27.500 --> 00:10:28.560 We already read it. 00:10:28.620 --> 00:10:30.879 Genesis chapter 3 this morning. 00:10:31.180 --> 00:10:32.019 Jim read it for us. 00:10:33.060 --> 00:10:36.840 Creation is subject to futility because of God's punishment. 00:10:36.840 --> 00:10:40.780 God's punishment on the world because of Adam and Eve's sin. 00:10:41.360 --> 00:10:44.680 The first verse Jim read for us this morning, verse 17. 00:10:45.180 --> 00:10:47.600 Because of Adam and Eve's sin, God says this, 00:10:48.040 --> 00:10:51.580 Cursed is the ground because of you. 00:10:52.759 --> 00:10:53.920 So creation is thwarted. 00:10:54.780 --> 00:10:57.280 Can't reach its ultimate purpose. 00:10:57.420 --> 00:10:58.879 Can't hit its full potential. 00:10:59.540 --> 00:11:02.440 Verse 21 calls it a bondage to corruption. 00:11:03.420 --> 00:11:04.460 We might say it this way. 00:11:04.460 --> 00:11:08.639 Trees get diseases just like people do. 00:11:09.840 --> 00:11:11.940 The fall affects everything. 00:11:12.180 --> 00:11:13.780 It does not just affect us. 00:11:14.379 --> 00:11:17.620 It affects all of God's world. 00:11:19.320 --> 00:11:20.680 Verse 20 then goes on to say, 00:11:20.940 --> 00:11:24.480 Not willingly, but because of him who subjected it. 00:11:25.220 --> 00:11:27.560 In other words, creation didn't have a say in this. 00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:30.580 It just happened to be tied up. 00:11:30.660 --> 00:11:32.759 Remember we said the destination of humanity 00:11:32.759 --> 00:11:36.559 and the destination of creation are intimately connected. 00:11:37.639 --> 00:11:40.879 And so when man fell, the world suffered. 00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:43.179 So the point is this. 00:11:44.179 --> 00:11:50.860 Creation now suffers under the curse on the earth 00:11:50.860 --> 00:11:53.200 because of Adam and Eve's sin. 00:11:53.200 --> 00:12:00.640 Creation now suffers under the curse on the creation, the opposite is also true. 00:12:59.840 --> 00:13:06.240 Redemption for mankind will also overflow into creation. 00:13:07.240 --> 00:13:09.639 Creation suffers a curse now. 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:14.820 Creation will experience a blessing then. 00:13:16.420 --> 00:13:19.000 So verse 20, saying it negatively, 00:13:19.780 --> 00:13:22.620 creation suffers under the curse because of sin. 00:13:23.259 --> 00:13:25.220 Verse 21 sets it positively. 00:13:25.220 --> 00:13:30.920 But, and, creation will one day flourish. 00:13:32.759 --> 00:13:35.320 Creation will one day reach its full verse 22, Paul goes on to clarify even more 00:14:14.039 --> 00:14:16.899 the type of suffering that he's talking about. 00:14:16.899 --> 00:14:20.039 For we know that the whole creation 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:21.559 has been groaning together 00:14:21.559 --> 00:14:24.939 in the pains of childbirth until now. 00:14:25.799 --> 00:14:27.939 And that birth pains that he's referring to, 00:14:27.980 --> 00:14:29.360 the pains of childbirth, 00:14:29.579 --> 00:14:32.659 helps us understand the type of suffering 00:14:32.659 --> 00:14:33.679 we're talking about, 00:14:34.059 --> 00:14:37.120 helps us understand the end of that suffering. 00:14:37.319 --> 00:14:38.720 So one commentator, John Murray, 00:14:38.840 --> 00:14:43.879 compares birth pains as the opposite of death pains. 00:14:44.460 --> 00:14:46.960 Birds pains is leading towards something. 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:48.720 It's leading towards new life 00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:51.019 and joy and celebration. 00:14:52.519 --> 00:14:56.659 Death pains is leading to nothing but death. 00:14:58.820 --> 00:15:01.580 So death pains are the beginning of the end. 00:15:02.439 --> 00:15:05.399 Birds pains are the beginning of the beginning. 00:15:06.580 --> 00:15:08.620 Death pains are the beginning of the end. 00:15:08.779 --> 00:15:11.200 Birds pains are the beginning of the beginning. 00:15:11.200 --> 00:15:14.980 what happens after birth pains, but joy, new life, right? 00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:20.980 So when we see decay and disease and sickness, 00:15:21.580 --> 00:15:23.879 we know where it's headed. 00:15:25.540 Paul's saying the same thing about our sufferings now. 00:16:00.259 --> 00:16:01.440 Back to verse 18. 00:16:02.340 --> 00:16:06.640 The future that's to come cannot be compared with our sufferings now. 00:16:07.020 --> 00:16:08.560 That's how big the gap is. 00:16:08.559 --> 00:16:11.919 Whatever suffering you are going through in this life, 00:16:12.099 --> 00:16:17.279 it is a birth pain leading to something great. 00:16:19.399 --> 00:16:21.699 Remember, Romans is the fifth gospel. 00:16:22.639 --> 00:16:25.500 What Paul teaches, Jesus taught first. 00:16:26.299 --> 00:16:30.619 Jesus also speaks about our suffering as a birth pang. 00:16:30.719 --> 00:16:32.419 This is from John chapter 16. 00:16:32.419 --> 00:16:38.199 You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 00:16:39.139 --> 00:16:44.199 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come. 00:16:45.039 --> 00:16:47.299 But when she has delivered the baby, 00:16:47.899 --> 00:16:52.120 she no longer remembers the anguish for joy 00:16:52.120 --> 00:16:56.240 that a human being has been born into the world. 00:16:56.240 --> 00:16:59.779 No longer remembers. 00:16:59.779 --> 00:17:00.700 Did you hear that? 00:17:01.820 --> 00:17:03.639 That sounds a lot like verse 18. 00:17:05.099 --> 00:17:11.000 The future to come is not worth comparing with the sufferings of the present. 00:17:12.480 --> 00:17:14.539 Jesus then finishes with this. 00:17:14.539 --> 00:17:17.599 So also you have sorrow now, 00:17:17.899 --> 00:17:20.039 but I will see you again, 00:17:20.480 --> 00:17:22.399 and your hearts will rejoice, 00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:27.539 and no one will take your joy from you. 00:17:30.759 --> 00:17:34.240 That's the type of suffering that you're in now. 00:17:35.359 --> 00:17:37.859 You are in birth pain suffering. 00:17:37.859 --> 00:17:41.479 And when the future comes, 00:17:42.259 --> 00:17:47.119 you will no longer remember the anguish. --> 00:18:05.519 Now, what's the point of all this? 00:18:05.519 --> 00:18:10.700 What is it that we learn from Paul bringing up creation? 00:18:11.559 --> 00:18:12.339 Many things. 00:18:12.420 --> 00:18:14.859 I'll focus on just a few of them this morning. 00:18:15.559 --> 00:18:22.839 First of all, this reminds us of the great value and worth of God's created world. 00:18:23.720 --> 00:18:25.180 If God's going to redeem it, 00:18:25.639 --> 00:18:27.379 that means God cares about it. 00:18:27.960 --> 00:18:30.480 And if God cares deeply about it, 00:18:30.500 --> 00:18:33.339 that means we are to care for it as well. 00:18:33.339 --> 00:18:35.959 So in the book of Genesis, if you're familiar, 00:18:36.199 --> 00:18:40.379 God comes and he gives mankind dominion over the earth. 00:18:40.759 --> 00:18:41.799 And some Christians say, 00:18:41.939 --> 00:18:43.279 okay, well we have dominion. 00:18:43.579 --> 00:18:44.679 God's given that to us, 00:18:44.699 --> 00:18:46.859 so it doesn't matter how we treat the world. 00:18:48.399 --> 00:18:48.879 False. 00:18:49.819 --> 00:18:52.339 The dominion that God has given humanity 00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:54.339 is meant to be a dominion 00:18:54.879 --> 00:18:59.639 that represents God's love and care for his creation. 00:18:59.640 --> 00:19:02.160 We're representing God to the earth 00:19:02.160 --> 00:19:04.600 and God cares so much about his creation 00:19:04.600 --> 00:19:07.280 that he is going to include it in his redemption 00:19:07.280 --> 00:19:10.900 and that creation right now is on its tiptoes 00:19:10.900 --> 00:19:12.880 looking forward to that. 00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:16.520 How much then, how well, 00:19:16.940 --> 00:19:20.000 should we care for God's world? 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.619 You can find this in various parts of the Bible. 00:19:24.759 --> 00:19:26.900 My favorite one is in Proverbs chapter 12, 00:19:26.980 --> 00:19:27.720 which says this, 00:19:28.500 --> 00:19:32.960 whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, 00:19:33.200 --> 00:19:34.220 that is his animals. 00:19:34.880 --> 00:19:37.799 But the mercy of the wicked is cruel.
