You might have said to yourself, I've read something very like that somewhere else before. 00:00:18.199 --> 00:00:29.939 And you'd be quite right, wouldn't you? Because if you're precisely in Luke's Gospel, in chapter 14, there's another parable, or story, and Jesus sounds almost identical. 00:00:30.859 --> 00:00:33.859 But it's quite different, and quite distinct. 00:00:34.859 --> 00:00:41.280 A story about a man who was holding a feast, and he sent out invitations, which was normal for a feast. 00:00:41.280 --> 00:00:48.359 And then people were pressed to come. And the emphasis of that parable, if you remember it, is that people made excuses. 00:00:48.859 --> 00:00:54.359 Got a field, got lots, and all sorts of things. I'm getting married. I can't come. 00:00:56.340 --> 00:01:02.180 The emphasis of this parable, though, is there's a king who has made a feast. 00:01:03.020 --> 00:01:07.859 And this feast is a wedding feast, and the person who's getting married is his son. 00:01:07.859 --> 00:01:14.200 And the emphasis, as we're going to look at it, is not so much on the excuses that are made, 00:01:14.700 --> 00:01:18.719 as upon the refusal of those who were invited. 00:01:19.739 --> 00:01:22.400 They refused even after repeated invitations. 00:01:23.599 --> 00:01:27.760 And we'll see how the way that they refused elicited the anger of the king. 00:01:29.019 --> 00:01:32.560 And the account of Matthew has a sting in the tale, it adds a little bit, 00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:39.379 a particularly sharp reminder that of the week, when he will be killed on the Friday. 00:01:59.640 --> 00:02:03.660 And they're moving to the point where they're trying to ensnare him, and arrest him, and destroy him. 00:02:03.880 --> indignation of the king. 00:02:34.979 --> 00:02:37.680 The king is enraged and sent in his army. 00:02:38.859 --> 00:02:42.719 And then thirdly, you see, the third scene is, this invitation is redirected 00:02:42.719 --> 00:02:45.300 to an altogether different company of people. 00:02:48.379 --> 00:02:52.400 And then the final scene is the exclusion of an intruder. 00:02:53.860 --> 00:02:57.139 For those who are listening when Jesus preached, it wouldn't have been difficult 00:02:57.139 --> 00:03:01.759 for those who immediately grasp who and what he was speaking about.
