Amen. 00:06:01.560 --> 00:06:07.000 So a few things that we're going to look at to just sort of help you. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:09.639 Like I'm going to make, we're going to walk through this story, 00:06:09.779 --> 00:06:15.639 but I want you to stop and basically contemplate each point in regard to your own life 00:06:15.639 --> 00:06:18.120 and in regard to your own salvation. 00:06:19.480 --> 00:06:22.699 So that's what I hope this morning will happen is that you will leave here 00:06:22.699 --> 00:06:27.500 really contemplating like the pit that Jesus has drawn you from 00:06:27.500 --> 00:06:32.000 and that your soul will be even more thankful, 00:06:32.160 --> 00:06:34.519 more gracious for the work of God in your life. 00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:38.199 So, y'all know me. 00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:40.879 Number one, I want you to contemplate this. 00:06:41.560 --> 00:06:43.560 You can see this in verses one and two, 00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:47.439 but really simply, our former life. 00:06:47.439 --> 00:06:54.319 So those of you who have been around the church for a number of years or not how long, 00:06:54.360 --> 00:06:57.500 like one of the first things in a lot of discipleship groups 00:06:57.500 --> 00:07:00.060 is they will teach you how to share your testimony, 00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:02.300 your story with other people, 00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:04.659 which is very, very valuable. 00:07:06.159 --> 00:07:08.899 And so number one is our former life, 00:07:08.920 --> 00:07:10.959 and we can see this in verses one and two. 00:07:10.959 --> 00:07:17.099 And so if you look back, just for a second, back at chapter 8, 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.539 this is where Saul was first introduced, 00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:23.819 and he is seen on the scene of the execution of Stephen, 00:07:24.479 --> 00:07:28.979 and he is giving approval to Stephen's execution in verse 1 of chapter 8. 00:07:29.919 --> 00:07:34.779 And this execution triggered a region-wide persecution of the church, 00:07:35.479 --> 00:07:40.279 and Saul was one of the main guys who took off after this. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:43.500 If you look at verse 3 of chapter 8, it says this. 00:07:44.699 --> 00:07:46.599 Amidst this persecution, this is what happened. 00:07:47.060 --> 00:07:49.000 But Saul was ravaging the church, 00:07:49.599 --> 00:07:51.299 and entering house after house, 00:07:51.379 --> 00:07:55.979 he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 00:07:56.959 --> 00:08:00.620 If you see the word ravaging, I guess in most of your ESV Bibles, 00:08:01.459 --> 00:08:04.759 ravaging really means like to the idea of havoc. 00:08:04.759 --> 00:08:12.339 It's the idea of even use of a wild boar going into a vineyard and tearing things apart, 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:17.519 and also of use of animals tearing people apart. 00:08:17.740 --> 00:08:21.060 It's the same word that's used in Greek literature. 00:08:21.800 --> 00:08:25.800 So you can literally say that Saul was tearing the church apart. 00:08:25.800 --> 00:08:31.180 And this was not necessarily an empire persecution from Rome. 00:08:31.240 --> 00:08:35.500 It was more of a Jewish persecution just in this region that happened. 00:08:36.340 --> 00:08:40.680 And so Luke connects, reconnects Saul here at the beginning of this chapter. 00:08:41.320 --> 00:08:43.159 And it says right here, as you can see, 00:08:44.240 --> 00:08:48.120 he was breathing out threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord. 00:08:49.060 --> 00:08:49.360 Right? 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:53.820 Yet we see the persecution in Jerusalem alone wasn't enough for Saul. 00:08:53.919 --> 00:08:59.039 He wanted to kind of extend that beyond Jerusalem itself and into the regions. 00:08:59.180 --> 00:09:03.419 And that's why he went to the chief priests and the elders and got permission to go. 00:09:03.740 --> 00:09:09.740 So he had legal authority to go and to round up all these people who were claiming to belong to the way, 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:14.379 which was an early term for followers of Jesus. 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:17.539 Meaning that they followed the way of Jesus. 00:09:17.539 --> 00:09:20.980 This understanding that Christ was the only way to God. 00:09:21.679 --> 00:09:26.799 And that they should follow the way of how Jesus lived and his teachings, etc. 00:09:27.779 --> 00:09:29.779 And so he was going for these people. 00:09:29.879 --> 00:09:31.039 And he had no regard. 00:09:31.959 --> 00:09:36.120 Whether you're a woman, whether you're a child, whether you're a man, old or young. 00:09:36.819 --> 00:09:37.819 He didn't care. 00:09:38.139 --> 00:09:42.139 If you claimed to belong to Christ, he was coming for you. 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:45.299 He was tearing the church apart. 00:09:45.299 --> 00:09:50.799 And indeed, you really could call him the terrorist of his day. 00:09:52.079 --> 00:09:57.919 And as if he was saying, if you're a follower of this Christ, know I'm coming for you. 00:09:58.539 --> 00:10:00.699 And if I find you, it's not going to be pretty. 00:10:01.539 --> 00:10:05.959 I'm going to wipe your filthy kind off the face of the earth. 00:10:06.379 --> 00:10:08.959 You have blasphemed the God that I serve. 00:10:09.059 --> 00:10:11.079 And you have gone against the law of Moses. 00:10:11.080 --> 00:10:13.440 So I'm coming for you. 00:10:14.400 --> 00:10:17.000 It's as if he's got that condom mentality. 00:10:17.960 --> 00:10:25.740 And a lot of it, as we know, some of the worst persecution in the world and some of the worst acts of terror are from religious zealots. 00:10:25.860 --> 00:10:28.240 Because they really believe in what they're doing. 00:10:29.040 --> 00:10:32.540 And believe that somehow they're serving God in the process. 00:10:32.539 --> 00:10:37.699 So briefly, I know, again, most of you are very aware of this. 00:10:37.779 --> 00:10:40.959 I'm not going to bore you with a lot of history facts. 00:10:41.059 --> 00:10:44.500 But you should sort of know Saul's background a little bit. 00:10:45.139 --> 00:10:53.699 But he was born in Tarsus, a city known for its schools and its education, Greco-Roman thinking and philosophy. 00:10:53.700 --> 00:10:55.900 So he was exposed to all of this. 00:10:55.980 --> 00:10:57.900 And like his father, he was a Roman citizen. 00:10:58.600 --> 00:11:03.120 Which, if you don't really study that, you don't really know how significant that is. 00:11:03.140 --> 00:11:03.780 But it was huge. 00:11:03.860 --> 00:11:09.080 He had a lot of rights and a lot of privileges that other Jews didn't have at all. 00:11:09.820 --> 00:11:19.240 So he was a master of the languages of the day, including Greek and the Roman world, as well as Hebrew and Aramaic. 00:11:19.240 --> 00:11:26.759 He was very learned and well-read in the Greco-Roman thinking, culture, philosophy. 00:11:27.460 --> 00:11:32.860 And as a Jew, he grew up as a Pharisee in the house of Pharisees. 00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:34.980 He called himself a son of a Pharisee. 00:11:35.360 --> 00:11:38.740 And he wanted to be in the top religious elite of his day. 00:11:40.080 --> 00:11:42.320 Pharisee means separated ones. 00:11:42.899 --> 00:11:47.960 People that call themselves out from the main group to be extra zealous, extra holy, 00:11:47.960 --> 00:11:49.460 away from the others. 00:11:50.540 --> 00:11:58.840 And to add to that, around the age of 14, he studied under the rabbi of his day, like the top guy, Gamaliel. 00:12:00.040 --> 00:12:03.120 So Saul was the most driven and the most zealous. 00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:06.259 In Galatians 1, let me just read to you. 00:12:07.019 --> 00:12:10.740 So Paul, at this point, reflecting back on who he was, 00:12:11.960 --> 00:12:13.740 Galatians 1, verse 13, he says, 00:12:13.740 --> 00:12:22.879 For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it. 00:12:23.419 --> 00:12:28.240 And I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people. 00:12:29.039 --> 00:12:32.799 So extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:37.799 So he was among the greatest persecutors ever in the church. 00:12:38.779 --> 00:12:42.279 And as the church was still small but spreading at this time, he thought, 00:12:42.419 --> 00:12:45.099 This is the time to end this nonsense. 00:12:47.319 --> 00:12:49.359 So that's his background. 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:52.639 But if you notice what I just read in Galatians 1, he says, 00:12:52.719 --> 00:12:56.079 Many of you have heard of my former life. 00:12:56.799 --> 00:13:00.179 Which is where we get the first point here, our former life. 00:13:00.179 --> 00:13:02.399 So what about you? 00:13:03.679 --> 00:13:07.539 If you're in Christ today, you have a former life. 00:13:08.559 --> 00:13:14.179 You have a life that you lived and when you did not belong to Jesus, 00:13:14.319 --> 00:13:17.500 there was a time you were not in Christ at all. 00:13:18.439 --> 00:13:23.399 And notice, I have noticed like over the years that people who forget 00:13:23.399 --> 00:13:28.000 and don't remember where they came from and who they were, 00:13:29.079 --> 00:13:35.079 they grow very cold in their affections towards Christ over a period of time. 00:13:36.279 --> 00:13:37.179 Have you forgotten? 00:13:38.659 --> 00:13:44.319 Have you forgotten the sin and bondage that you were in before Christ delivered you? 00:13:44.320 --> 00:13:48.960 So as you grow in your relationship with Christ, 00:13:49.080 --> 00:13:53.020 you also should grow more and more of your awareness of how much you need him, 00:13:53.640 --> 00:13:54.780 not vice versa. 00:13:56.480 --> 00:13:58.580 All of us had different idols that we served, 00:13:58.680 --> 00:14:00.360 things that we loved more than God, 00:14:01.060 --> 00:14:04.480 things that we gave our life to that were not worthy. 00:14:05.980 --> 00:14:09.040 And all of us were slaves to sin. 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:10.059 And Jesus says, 00:14:10.159 --> 00:14:13.579 he who commits sin is a slave to sin. 00:14:14.980 --> 00:14:19.819 But most of us come from several different scenarios. 00:14:20.039 --> 00:14:23.219 I don't want to be so bold to say you had to come from one of these scenarios. 00:14:24.019 --> 00:14:25.500 But it either starts off, 00:14:26.179 --> 00:14:28.679 I grew up in the church and in a Christian home, 00:14:28.839 --> 00:14:32.099 or I didn't grow up in the church or a Christian home. 00:14:32.100 --> 00:14:34.500 But for a lot of us, 00:14:34.540 --> 00:14:38.120 some of you may have become a believer at a very young age, 00:14:38.420 --> 00:14:38.920 legitimately. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:41.820 You walk with the Lord for a long time, 00:14:42.580 --> 00:14:44.580 never really do anything too crazy. 00:14:45.899 --> 00:14:48.040 But you are aware of your sin, 00:14:48.159 --> 00:14:50.840 and you really do trust in Christ as the Savior. 00:14:51.920 --> 00:14:53.379 And if that is you this morning, 00:14:54.340 --> 00:14:57.940 don't be one of those ridiculous people who say, 00:14:57.940 --> 00:14:59.899 well, I don't have that great of a testimony. 00:14:59.899 --> 00:15:03.899 When you hear someone get up and talk about drugs and sex and prison, 00:15:04.139 --> 00:15:06.360 don't ever compare like that, ever. 00:15:07.379 --> 00:15:09.919 It dishonors the work that God has done in your life. 00:15:11.019 --> 00:15:14.819 And it should actually cause you extreme joy and thanksgiving, 00:15:14.959 --> 00:15:17.720 because you didn't have to go through that. 00:15:18.480 --> 00:15:22.819 God could have just allowed you to be crazy and do all the stuff, 00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:23.399 but he didn't. 00:15:23.459 --> 00:15:24.860 He saved you at an early time. 00:15:25.279 --> 00:15:27.980 And he put people around you that against that. 00:16:07.600 --> 00:16:10.000 You had a secret life off to the side, and that was me. 00:16:10.919 --> 00:16:14.139 And then later on, God humbled you and brought you back. 00:16:15.000 --> 00:16:16.899 And that was more or less my story. 00:16:17.899 --> 00:16:20.179 And then there's another type that grew up in the church, 00:16:20.240 --> 00:16:20.940 in a Christian home. 00:16:20.980 --> 00:16:23.440 And this is the people who, for a time, 00:16:23.559 --> 00:16:26.139 thought that their religious deeds made them right with God. 00:16:26.759 --> 00:16:28.299 I'm the goody-two-shoes. 00:16:28.399 --> 00:16:31.580 I don't drink, cuss, or chew, or go to those who do. 00:16:31.659 --> 00:16:32.940 Like, that's the old saying, right? 00:16:33.940 --> 00:16:38.660 And I have a really good friend of mine who grew up kind of like that. 00:16:39.080 --> 00:16:41.340 She was always the finger-pointer at me and my brother, 00:16:41.460 --> 00:16:43.660 which she should have been, but she was always like, 00:16:43.680 --> 00:16:45.820 you know, you guys aren't really living the life. 00:16:46.420 --> 00:16:50.340 But later on, she would tell you that she really doesn't think 00:16:50.340 --> 00:16:53.460 that she was born again most of her life until a few years ago 00:16:53.820 --> 00:16:58.560 because she was so full of her own self-righteousness and piety 00:16:58.559 --> 00:17:01.439 that she really didn't see her need for Jesus 00:17:01.439 --> 00:17:04.000 until God exposed that to her. 00:17:04.059 --> 00:17:05.679 Like, you're no different than the Pharisees. 00:17:06.299 --> 00:17:08.119 You're no different than the religious elite. 00:17:09.379 --> 00:17:11.819 And so God humbled you and brought you down 00:17:11.819 --> 00:17:14.139 and showed you that you really weren't that moral, 00:17:14.319 --> 00:17:15.539 really weren't that religious, 00:17:16.200 --> 00:17:17.500 and you came to know Christ. 00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:22.179 And the other scenario was you didn't grow up in the church 00:17:22.179 --> 00:17:22.980 or a Christian home. 00:17:23.779 --> 00:17:25.819 And you might have lived a pretty moral life. 00:17:25.819 --> 00:17:30.019 I know some guys that are, like, probably better guys than I am. 00:17:30.119 --> 00:17:32.960 Like, they haven't done as many crazy things as me. 00:17:33.579 --> 00:17:34.539 They're very nice. 00:17:34.619 --> 00:17:35.299 They're very patient. 00:17:36.039 --> 00:17:39.399 And I find almost that to be the hardest group to share the gospel with 00:17:39.399 --> 00:17:40.919 because they don't really see their need. 00:17:41.619 --> 00:17:44.899 They have to be able to see that their morality is nothing 00:17:44.899 --> 00:17:46.779 compared to God's holiness. 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:49.200 And some of you, that might have been you. 00:17:49.240 --> 00:17:51.019 You might have been a good person before Jesus, 00:17:51.019 --> 00:17:55.799 but not really good compared to the blazing glory of the holiness of God. 00:17:55.819 --> 00:17:58.399 And then others of you, 00:17:59.500 --> 00:18:03.980 you might have lived that crazy life. 00:18:04.839 --> 00:18:07.859 You might have done some things that are very harmful to yourself, 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:08.639 to your family. 00:18:09.779 --> 00:18:12.319 You lived in darkness and loved the darkness am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 00:22:11.019 --> 00:22:19.299 So, imagine that horror of encountering the risen Son of God who you rejected and mocked. 00:22:19.759 --> 00:22:25.579 And that you gave approval to the man, for them to kill the very man who was telling you about Jesus, Stephen. 00:22:26.240 --> 00:22:27.519 You cheered that on. 00:22:28.759 --> 00:22:29.920 But, wait a minute. 00:22:30.200 --> 00:22:31.759 Saul is persecuting the church. 00:22:32.599 --> 00:22:32.900 Right? 00:22:33.579 --> 00:22:35.920 But Jesus says, you're persecuting me. 00:22:36.779 --> 00:22:38.099 And why is that? 00:22:38.099 --> 00:22:45.740 And most of us understand that to persecute the church is to also persecute Christ himself. 00:22:46.379 --> 00:22:49.099 Because we are members of his body. 00:22:49.219 --> 00:22:50.639 We are the bride of Christ. 00:22:50.759 --> 00:22:52.539 We are one with Christ. 00:22:53.240 --> 00:22:56.000 And so, anything done to Christ is something done to the church. 00:22:56.579 --> 00:22:57.619 And vice versa. 00:22:59.019 --> 00:23:01.119 And so, shock. 00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:03.259 This is like his worst nightmare coming true. 00:23:03.339 --> 00:23:05.759 Like the Jesus that he had preached against. 00:23:06.319 --> 00:23:09.299 And the persecutors that he had been arresting and putting to death. 00:23:10.019 --> 00:23:11.639 All of a sudden, he's wrong. 00:23:12.359 --> 00:23:13.599 Stephen was right. 00:23:14.579 --> 00:23:15.419 Imagine that. 00:23:16.139 --> 00:23:22.000 So, he's confronted with all these violent crimes that he has committed against the risen Son of God. 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.619 So, Saul set out to arrest Christians. 00:23:24.759 --> 00:23:27.960 But instead, Christ arrests Saul instead. 00:23:28.299 --> 00:23:28.759 Flip that. 00:23:30.079 --> 00:23:32.319 Christ literally arrests Saul on the road. 00:23:33.220 --> 00:23:37.519 He uses language in the New Testament saying, like, I was apprehended by Jesus. 00:23:38.759 --> 00:23:40.960 So, he is broken and traumatized. 00:23:41.039 --> 00:23:45.440 And you kind of see that his companions sort of pick him up, take him on to Damascus. 00:23:45.440 --> 00:23:47.519 And he stays there for three days. 00:23:47.580 --> 00:23:48.299 And he's blind. 00:23:48.900 --> 00:23:50.259 He doesn't sleep or eat. 00:23:51.039 --> 00:23:54.480 Not sure if he was fasting and he was just reflecting over his life. 00:23:55.180 --> 00:23:58.940 Or if that trauma was so intense that he just couldn't eat. 00:23:59.480 --> 00:24:00.320 Couldn't sleep. 00:24:01.140 --> 00:24:02.220 Or maybe even both. 00:24:03.600 --> 00:24:06.680 Nonetheless, he expected to come into that city a conquering hero. 00:24:06.860 --> 00:24:10.500 But instead, he comes crawling literally on his knees. 00:24:11.259 --> 00:24:14.400 Because he has met King Jesus on the road. 00:24:15.440 --> 00:24:18.100 Just hold your hand in Acts 9. 00:24:18.180 --> 00:24:20.600 But just flip over to Acts 26 really quick. 00:24:24.140 --> 00:24:30.059 So, later on in Acts, Paul is giving an account before King Agrippa. 00:24:30.740 --> 00:24:33.080 And he reflects back on this story. 00:24:34.140 --> 00:24:37.820 And it kind of gives us a little bigger picture of what happened. 00:24:39.120 --> 00:24:41.120 Acts 26, verse 12. 00:24:42.460 --> 00:24:43.580 And this is Paul talking. 00:24:44.059 --> 00:24:44.680 Who was Saul. 00:24:45.440 --> 00:24:49.620 I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. 00:24:50.500 --> 00:24:57.100 At midday, O King, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, 00:24:57.799 --> 00:25:00.480 that shone around me and those who journeyed with me. 00:25:00.480 --> 00:25:07.960 And when we had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, 00:25:08.539 --> 00:25:11.700 Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? 00:25:12.240 --> 00:25:15.180 It is hard for you to kick against the goads. 00:25:15.180 --> 00:25:19.220 So, to kick against the goads was a phrase. 00:25:19.940 --> 00:25:26.799 A goat is this long, pointy stick that was used by a herdsman to move cattle and to move stubborn livestock. 00:25:26.799 --> 00:25:31.680 But in the Greco-Roman world, this was a phrase that was used to basically say, 00:25:32.480 --> 00:25:36.000 by your actions and by your life, you are opposing a deity. 00:25:36.480 --> 00:25:41.559 So, he understood, I'm opposing God in some way. 00:25:41.559 --> 00:25:43.279 And he said, 00:25:43.279 --> 00:25:44.119 Who are you, Lord? 00:25:44.940 --> 00:25:46.000 And the Lord said, 00:25:46.079 --> 00:25:48.220 I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. 00:25:48.720 --> 00:25:51.159 But rise and stand upon your feet. 00:25:51.740 --> 00:25:54.059 For I have appeared to you for this purpose, 00:25:54.599 --> 00:25:59.200 to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me 00:25:59.200 --> 00:26:02.059 and those in which I will appear to you, 00:26:03.240 --> 00:26:07.080 delivering you from the people and from the Gentiles, 00:26:07.640 --> 00:26:10.500 to whom I am sending you to so, just remember that regardless of your story, 00:26:34.220 --> 00:26:39.620 we all have had some encounter with the risen Son of God. 00:26:40.120 --> 00:26:43.039 If Jesus was dead, in fact, and not living, 00:26:43.120 --> 00:26:44.480 you wouldn't have an encounter with Him. 00:26:45.660 --> 00:26:49.019 So, regardless of that, according to God's sovereign plan, 00:26:49.560 --> 00:26:51.960 at some point, He began working in your heart, 00:26:52.100 --> 00:26:56.840 convincing you, showing you your need, guilt in your life. 00:26:56.920 --> 00:26:57.900 Shame in your life. 00:26:58.600 --> 00:27:01.019 Worry and burdens that you were carrying in your life. 00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:03.880 Showing you that you needed a Savior. 00:27:05.039 --> 00:27:06.160 And this is what's going on. 00:27:06.240 --> 00:27:10.660 He's moving in Saul's life, convicting him of sin. 00:27:11.820 --> 00:27:12.140 Right? 00:27:12.140 --> 00:27:17.520 But some of us, I don't ever want you just to compare just to Saul, 00:27:18.060 --> 00:27:20.160 because a big mistake that a lot of people make is thinking, 00:27:20.280 --> 00:27:22.220 I hadn't had that Damascus Road experience, 00:27:22.400 --> 00:27:25.460 so am I actually a believer or not? 00:27:26.460 --> 00:27:29.840 Well, the truth is that God saves the same way, 00:27:29.900 --> 00:27:32.240 but yet that process may look differently. 00:27:33.240 --> 00:27:35.259 Some of you may have had an experience like this, 00:27:35.319 --> 00:27:36.940 like God knocks you down, literally, 00:27:37.660 --> 00:27:38.759 and you came on your knees, 00:27:38.839 --> 00:27:41.019 and you literally gave your life to Christ at that time. 00:27:42.259 --> 00:27:43.660 Some of you may have had that. 00:27:44.660 --> 00:27:47.759 Others, it's been a more gradual process, 00:27:47.759 --> 00:27:53.519 where Christ was slowly knocking down the idols in your life, 00:27:53.680 --> 00:27:55.519 making you more and more aware of your need. 00:27:56.400 --> 00:27:58.059 And at some point, you were converted. 00:27:58.799 --> 00:27:59.799 You came to Christ. 00:28:00.980 --> 00:28:04.339 So, something I also want you to notice in this text 00:28:04.339 --> 00:28:07.740 is that regardless, God took the initiative, not you. 00:28:07.740 --> 00:28:10.460 God hunted Saul down. 00:28:10.620 --> 00:28:12.759 He didn't just say, you know, just kind of waited like, 00:28:13.339 --> 00:28:16.079 Saul, I really would like you to possibly be a missionary. 00:28:16.539 --> 00:28:17.660 How do you feel about that? 00:28:18.380 --> 00:28:21.339 He, like, literally hunts Saul down and knocks him off the horse. 00:28:22.099 --> 00:28:23.920 And regardless of how you feel about it, 00:28:23.920 --> 00:28:25.240 that's the same way he did to you. 00:28:26.359 --> 00:28:28.279 At some point in your life, he showed you. 00:28:29.240 --> 00:28:32.620 He convinced you of your need for him. 00:28:33.640 --> 00:28:35.700 So, God took that initiative. 00:28:35.700 --> 00:28:40.000 God sought us and bought us. 00:28:41.140 --> 00:28:44.140 A Puritan, great writer John Flavel, 00:28:45.000 --> 00:28:48.200 contemplating on this idea of when we came to know Christ, 00:28:49.140 --> 00:28:49.559 he said, 00:28:49.640 --> 00:28:54.900 A remarkable performance of God's providence for his people 00:28:54.900 --> 00:28:57.319 is the ordering of the occasion, 00:28:58.200 --> 00:29:01.019 the instrument, and the means of their conversion. 00:29:01.019 --> 00:29:06.579 You are more beholden to him for this than all your other mercies. 00:29:07.359 --> 00:29:12.200 I cannot but think that your heart must be deeply affected by the thought of it. 00:29:12.980 --> 00:29:16.079 Every gracious heart loves to servant of God, 00:29:52.859 --> 00:29:54.720 a believer in Damascus, 00:29:54.859 --> 00:29:55.440 Ananias, 00:29:55.940 --> 00:29:57.619 a faithful follower of the Lord, 00:29:58.440 --> 00:30:00.480 that God sort of wakes up, basically, 00:30:00.619 --> 00:30:01.099 and says, 00:30:01.799 --> 00:30:02.440 Ananias, 00:30:02.460 --> 00:30:04.759 it's like a picture of almost in the Old Testament 00:30:04.759 --> 00:30:07.519 where God called out the prophet Samuel 00:30:07.519 --> 00:30:08.700 as a young boy and said, 00:30:08.819 --> 00:30:09.139 Samuel, 00:30:09.759 --> 00:30:11.059 and woke him up, right, 00:30:11.599 --> 00:30:12.220 in a vision. 00:30:13.099 --> 00:30:13.920 So he responded, 00:30:14.079 --> 00:30:14.859 Here am I, Lord, 00:30:14.859 --> 00:30:18.159 indicating he was ready and eager 00:30:18.159 --> 00:30:20.619 and available to serve God at that moment. 00:30:21.779 --> 00:30:23.399 So Ananias had heard of Saul. 00:30:24.179 --> 00:30:26.039 He heard of how scary he was 00:30:26.039 --> 00:30:27.240 and all the acts of terror 00:30:27.240 --> 00:30:30.019 he had been taking out on the church. 00:30:30.819 --> 00:30:31.639 And he is like, 00:30:31.679 --> 00:30:33.399 he's done this in Jerusalem, 00:30:33.479 --> 00:30:35.359 and I know that he's come here to Damascus 00:30:35.359 --> 00:30:36.459 to do the same thing, 00:30:36.979 --> 00:30:38.639 even to people like me. 00:30:39.240 --> 00:30:41.599 So he had a lot of reasons to think twice 00:30:41.599 --> 00:30:43.539 before going to Saul. 00:30:44.419 -->
