00:04:33.900 --> 00:04:36.319 is a shared life together. 00:04:36.939 --> 00:04:38.240 Now, let me give you a bit of context. 00:04:38.240 --> 00:04:42.660 In Acts chapter 1, we saw Jesus has given his followers 00:04:42.660 --> 00:04:44.759 a task of finishing the mission he began. 00:04:46.259 --> 00:04:49.079 It basically starts off by saying, 00:04:49.579 --> 00:04:51.480 Luke saying, in my former book, 00:04:51.600 --> 00:04:54.120 I told you about all the things that Jesus began to do and teach. 00:04:54.220 --> 00:04:55.860 Now, this book here is about the things 00:04:55.860 --> 00:04:59.180 that Jesus is continuing to do and teach. 00:04:59.720 --> 00:05:02.740 And he gave his disciples, that early church, 00:05:02.740 --> 00:05:07.620 the task of testifying to the truth about Jesus everywhere. 00:05:08.160 --> 00:05:10.199 Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, ends of the earth. 00:05:10.300 --> 00:05:12.319 There is nowhere where this must not go. 00:05:13.280 --> 00:05:14.600 them help in the person of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:22.759 --> 00:05:26.819 And Peter gets up on that day that they are filled 00:05:26.819 --> 00:05:30.680 and preaches and 3,000 people repented of says that they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, 00:06:10.500 --> 00:06:14.279 which basically means that they became students of God's words. 00:06:14.899 --> 00:06:17.159 Now, I think there are two main reasons for that. 00:06:17.740 --> 00:06:20.539 The authoritative teaching of the apostles, first of all, 00:06:20.719 --> 00:06:23.599 and the experience of these newly converted believers. 00:06:24.459 --> 00:06:25.879 When you look, first of all, 00:06:25.959 --> 00:06:28.259 at the authoritative teaching of the apostles, 00:06:29.139 --> 00:06:32.539 what you see is that in chapter 1, 00:06:32.599 --> 00:06:34.500 Luke has gone to great lengths to show us 00:06:34.500 --> 00:06:38.459 that these apostles had been personally appointed by Jesus. 00:06:38.699 --> 00:06:40.879 This isn't going to work, so I'm probably going to ditch it. 00:06:41.819 --> 00:06:42.459 There we go. 00:06:42.459 --> 00:06:45.979 Luke has gone to great lengths to show us 00:06:45.979 --> 00:06:48.419 that the apostles had been personally appointed by Jesus. 00:06:48.859 --> 00:06:50.419 They carried the authority of the king. 00:06:51.399 --> 00:06:53.779 And then verse 43 tells us that the miracles 00:06:53.779 --> 00:06:56.620 that the apostles performed really served 00:06:56.620 --> 00:06:58.819 in the way that miracles always serve in the Bible, 00:06:59.179 --> 00:07:01.339 to authenticate the spoken word, 00:07:01.620 --> 00:07:05.159 to authenticate the teaching of the person doing the speaking. 00:07:05.160 --> 00:07:10.180 So the teaching then and the miracles brought about, 00:07:10.680 --> 00:07:12.220 as verse 43 says, 00:07:12.300 --> 00:07:13.540 a great sense of awe, 00:07:13.960 --> 00:07:15.680 and the church, this new church, 00:07:15.760 --> 00:07:18.720 knew that God was working through these guys. 00:07:19.420 --> 00:07:22.940 And that in order to know this amazing God better, 00:07:23.020 --> 00:07:25.320 the one that they killed, as Peter said, 00:07:25.700 --> 00:07:28.000 and the one that has now given them new life, 00:07:28.260 --> 00:07:30.400 as they professed faith in Christ, 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:33.819 they wanted to devote themselves to their teaching, 00:07:33.979 --> 00:07:35.899 the apostles' teaching. 00:07:37.179 --> 00:07:38.659 Now secondly, I think, 00:07:39.019 --> 00:07:41.259 that the experience of these new believers, 00:07:41.859 --> 00:07:43.979 the experience of these new believers 00:07:43.979 --> 00:07:45.659 really enthused their hearts 00:07:45.659 --> 00:08:10.400 they responded to it, 00:08:10.660 --> 00:08:11.980 and the preaching of God's word 00:08:11.980 --> 00:08:13.780 had just transformed their life. 00:08:13.780 --> 00:08:16.700 It just
