A story? 00:02:46.560 --> 00:02:52.519 We're going to make a decision on something as big as becoming a 51st state in the United States on the basis of a story? 00:02:52.520 --> 00:02:59.219 Well, if you think about it for a second, Christians are making these very, very, very large and far-reaching claims 00:02:59.219 --> 00:03:03.040 that God, the Son of God, the second person of the Trinity, 00:03:03.280 --> 00:03:10.860 took on human nature and was born as a baby boy to live a fully human life in space and time in history, 00:03:10.860 --> 00:03:16.980 and that the entire fate of humankind, each human life, depends upon how you react to it. 00:03:16.979 --> 00:03:21.939 Well, that's actually a far bigger thing than becoming the 51st state of the United States of America. 00:03:22.599 --> 00:03:24.500 How do we know about it? A story. 00:03:25.259 --> 00:03:28.379 The nativity of Jesus, the birth of Jesus, is told as a story. 00:03:28.939 --> 00:03:30.579 It's a very short, simple story. 00:03:30.739 --> 00:03:33.179 I just read it. We're going to read it again in a couple of minutes. 00:03:33.259 --> 00:03:34.539 It just takes a couple of verses. 00:03:35.339 --> 00:03:39.339 It can be drawn quite, if you had that ability, you 00:04:16.819 If you don't think about it through, we have some people who are immigrants to Canada 00:04:16.819 --> 00:04:19.560 and just ask them if they get comfortable with you. 00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:21.420 How Canadian are Christians in Canada? 00:04:21.639 --> 00:04:24.139 And they might tell you just how Canadian we actually are. 00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:28.680 And so for Canadians, the fact-checked autobiography? 00:04:57.759 --> 00:05:01.300 Why don't we have something like an authoritative report 00:05:01.300 --> 00:05:04.780 from the most eminent scholars and experts in Canada 00:05:04.780 --> 00:05:08.680 and have them give us this authentic, authoritative report? 00:05:09.340 --> 00:05:13.840 That's what we Canadians think would be far more substantial and meaty 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:40.860 when he's supposed to be looking after the kids. 00:05:41.639 --> 00:05:46.199 But the triune God in his wisdom saw fit to communicate to us, 00:05:46.780 --> 00:05:49.340 at least in regards to the nativity of Jesus 00:05:49.340 --> 00:05:52.740 and the key doctrines of the Incarnation, 00:05:52.740 --> 00:05:56.139 primarily in the form of a story or several stories, 00:05:56.300 --> 00:05:57.680 all telling one story. 00:05:58.540 --> 00:05:59.960 What on earth was he thinking? 00:06:02.199 --> 00:06:05.040 Didn't he know that when it comes to far-reaching claims, 00:06:05.460 --> 00:06:08.340 we advanced, modern, well-educated Canadians 00:06:08.340 --> 00:06:10.699 who know how to use TikTok and Instagram 00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:13.840 and demand something far stronger than a story, 00:06:13.960 --> 00:06:15.759 or at least something which has good vibes? 00:06:16.699 --> 00:06:17.579 Hold that thought. 00:06:19.900 --> 00:06:22.079 The next thing about the story is this. 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:23.759 It's a very unique claim, 00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:29.159 is that the story of the nativity of Jesus is a true story. 00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:31.680 I used to read stories to my children. 00:06:32.019 --> 00:06:36.860 Full disclosure, my wife was the overwhelming principal reader 00:06:36.860 --> 00:06:38.839 of stories to our kids, 00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:42.219 but occasionally I would read stories to my kids. 00:06:42.919 --> 00:06:45.519 And after reading something about PJ Funny Bunny 00:06:45.519 --> 00:06:47.419 or something by Dr. Seuss, 00:06:47.799 --> 00:06:49.560 I would read them a Bible story. 00:06:49.560 --> 00:06:53.000 However, I always said something like this to the children 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:54.600 before I read the Bible story. 00:06:54.699 --> 00:06:56.860 I'd say it's, you know, good to read these stories, 00:06:57.060 --> 00:06:59.040 Santa, PJ Funny Bunny, whatever. 00:06:59.379 --> 00:07:00.980 But you need to know that this story 00:07:00.980 --> 00:07:03.680 that I'm about to read to you is a true story. 00:07:04.579 --> 00:07:06.259 I want them to understand the difference 00:07:06.259 --> 00:07:08.279 between the two stories. 00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:10.639 Because we, for too many Canadians, 00:07:10.759 --> 00:07:13.399 we have Santa stories and Jesus' birth stories, 00:07:13.399 --> 00:07:16.000 and they are both equally just stories. 00:07:16.859 --> 00:07:21.139 But Matthew tells us that he is telling a true story. 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:23.639 In fact, Matthew put his, 00:07:23.699 --> 00:07:25.779 I was going to say his money where his mouth was. 00:07:25.879 --> 00:07:28.679 He did, he put his life where his mouth was 00:07:28.679 --> 00:07:31.079 because at the end of his life, 00:07:31.279 --> 00:07:34.239 he died, he died sort of by torture 00:07:34.239 --> 00:07:38.379 because the authorities wanted him to recant 00:07:38.379 --> 00:07:40.339 and say that the stories that he had written, 00:07:40.339 --> 00:07:42.619 the story he had written about Jesus wasn't true. 00:07:43.159 --> 00:07:44.019 He'd made it up. 00:07:44.639 --> 00:07:46.279 And Matthew went to his death 00:07:46.279 --> 00:07:49.019 rather than denying the truth of the story. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:51.199 Regrettably, in our life, 00:07:51.279 --> 00:07:53.679 we know many people will die for causes, 00:07:53.859 --> 00:07:56.120 but not many people will die for facts. 00:07:56.599 --> 00:07:58.559 But Matthew died for a fact. 00:07:59.299 --> 00:08:02.839 Now, of course, the story of the nativity of Jesus 00:08:02.839 --> 00:08:05.419 being true, the virgin birth and all of that, 00:08:05.500 --> 00:08:07.599 is, of course, highly contested. 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:10.340 And that sometimes really bothers Christians 00:08:10.340 --> 00:08:12.740 when we find out that something's highly contested. 00:08:12.800 --> 00:08:13.360 It makes us go, 00:08:13.460 --> 00:08:15.620 oh, I don't know what I should be thinking about this. 00:08:15.680 --> 00:08:16.680 It's highly contested. 00:08:16.860 --> 00:08:19.160 But 00:08:40.699 --> 00:08:42.659 if they read it in an open-minded way, 00:08:43.159 --> 00:08:45.159 they'll see that they both claim to be writing 00:08:45.159 --> 00:08:48.519 an eyewitness-based biography of Jesus, 00:08:48.979 --> 00:08:51.740 something which actually happened. 00:08:52.240 --> 00:08:56.439 And they wrote these eyewitness-based biographies of Jesus 00:08:56.439 --> 00:08:59.120 when many, many, many eyewitnesses were still alive. 00:08:59.120 --> 00:09:03.100 So people can say that the stories aren't true 00:09:03.100 --> 00:09:04.379 because they're impossible, 00:09:04.379 --> 00:09:06.980 but they shouldn't ever say 00:09:06.980 --> 00:09:11.060 that the authors didn't intend to write a true story. 00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:14.320 I think the evidence is there that the story is true, 00:09:14.799 --> 00:09:17.759 that it is historically, factually, emotionally, 00:09:18.039 --> 00:09:20.560 morally, spiritually, and aesthetically true. 00:09:21.360 the name of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, 00:09:32.100 --> 00:09:35.539 and she's been a very fascinating woman for a long time, 00:09:36.120 --> 00:09:39.019 growing up as a devout Muslim, 00:09:39.179 --> 00:09:41.519 in fact, what we would call an Islamicist. 00:09:42.799 --> 00:09:46.740 And she ends up fleeing her Islamic background. 00:09:46.960 --> 00:09:49.299 She enters into Europe. 00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:50.399 She becomes an atheist. 00:09:50.740 --> 00:09:53.379 She was a good friend of all of the atheists, 00:09:53.379 --> 00:09:56.539 Christopher Hitchens, Dawkins, all of them. 00:09:56.720 --> 00:09:58.720 And within the last year, she has become a Christian. 00:09:59.620 --> 00:10:02.220 And there's some very interesting interviews 00:10:02.220 --> 00:10:03.980 between 00:10:14.460 because she captures this aspect of the truth 00:10:14.460 --> 00:10:16.220 very beautifully, if you listen to her. 00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:19.080 He presses her on something like the virgin birth, 00:10:19.120 --> 00:10:20.240 and he's quite contemptuous. 00:10:20.299 --> 00:10:21.379 Like, how can you believe something 00:10:21.379 --> 00:10:23.039 like the virgin birth is even of laws 00:11:22.759 --> 00:11:25.719 and worship and poetry 00:11:25.719 --> 00:11:29.439 and prophecy 00:11:29.439 --> 00:11:31.979 and profound wisdom, 00:11:31.979 --> 00:11:33.639 like the books of Ecclesiastes 00:11:33.639 --> 00:11:36.219 and the Psalms and poetry 00:11:36.219 --> 00:11:37.359 and Song of Songs. 00:11:37.360 --> 00:11:38.980 It's in the context 00:11:38.980 --> 00:11:40.840 of this profound history 00:11:40.840 --> 00:11:41.600 of teachings 00:11:41.600 --> 00:11:43.919 out of which science emerged 00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:46.480 and the belief in human rights emerged --> 00:12:19.660 and then at this culminating time 00:12:19.660 --> 00:12:21.200 there's the birth of Jesus. 00:12:21.420 --> 00:12:23.180 And it's not just a true story, 00:12:24.020 --> 00:12:26.460
