end of Christ's earthly ministry, right before he ascends to the right hand of God, the father in heaven. 00:04:22.939 --> 00:04:26.620 He turns to Peter, who's going to be the leader of the church in is his work on the cross. 00:05:04.479 --> 00:05:15.399 So what I want to try to show you is that the ministry of Christ, his entire earthly ministry in his first coming, his ministry took the shape loved ones, and then to anyone else God brings into your family and into your life. 00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:21.459 And then for us as a congregation, you minister when you're a part of discipleship. Sunday school, as you're serving the kids, as we're part of discipleship, once a month together, we are ministers together of Christ. 00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:37.819 So Christ's ministry, it should shape our ministry. 00:06:38.219 --> 00:06:44.019 And if there's anything our church needs to be known for, it's that we are seeking to be patterned after Christ himself. 00:06:44.019 --> 00:06:47.699 So our ministry also should take the shape of the cross. 00:06:48.539 --> 00:06:50.439 All right, well, let's march through these verses. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:52.479 The first observation is this. 00:06:52.620 --> 00:06:58.639 Number one, the ministry of Jesus is cross-shaped because he was opposed. 00:06:59.579 --> 00:07:05.560 When Jesus marched up the hill of skulls with that heavy cross over his shoulder, 00:07:05.560 --> 00:07:14.780 the cultural religious leaders and the crowds they had worked up, they were yelling and chanting, crucify him. 00:07:15.980 --> 00:07:17.480 That's his mission on the cross. 00:07:17.579 --> 00:07:23.019 But his ministry as well, when Jesus marched across Galilee, as we see here in the northern region, 00:07:23.579 --> 00:07:26.439 he was ministering in such a way as well. 00:07:26.439 --> 00:07:33.439 And the cultural religious, these elite up in Galilee and Capernaum, they grumbled, they opposed him. 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:36.860 So his ministry was marked by his mission. 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:39.740 He was always opposed by the establishment. 00:07:39.939 --> 00:07:41.000 Let me give a little context. 00:07:41.480 --> 00:07:43.740 Who are these Jews in this area? 00:07:44.060 --> 00:07:50.019 We read at the very end of our text in verse 59 that he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. 00:07:50.920 --> 00:07:52.680 And maybe you're wondering, what's a synagogue? 00:07:52.839 --> 00:07:53.779 Is that the same as the temple? 00:07:53.779 --> 00:07:57.919 So the synagogues were really places not in Jerusalem. 00:07:58.119 --> 00:07:59.819 They're scattered throughout the land of Israel. 00:08:00.419 --> 00:08:06.139 And they were like a house for the people of God to come together in where they would open up the scrolls. 00:08:06.419 --> 00:08:12.079 So it's one central regional area where everybody could travel to to have the reading of God's word, the reading of the law. 00:08:12.939 --> 00:08:14.359 Synagogues were ruled by elders. 00:08:14.859 --> 00:08:17.799 So there would always be a plurality of elders ruling over a synagogue. 00:08:18.259 --> 00:08:19.299 And that was their job. 00:08:19.300 --> 00:08:29.160 It was to feed the people the word of God, preparing for them to be able to come back to Jerusalem at least once a year for the big day of atonement and have their sins pardoned. 00:08:29.740 --> 00:08:31.900 And so the rest of the year, they would be in these synagogues. 00:08:31.980 --> 00:08:35.259 So it was most likely because he's up in Capernaum in the region of Galilee. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:37.600 He's not yet traveled back down to Jerusalem. 00:08:37.940 --> 00:08:39.899 He will go there in chapter seven next week. 00:08:39.899 --> 00:08:41.500 But for now, he's up north. 00:08:41.559 --> 00:08:43.620 So it's most likely these elders in the synagogue. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.480 They're speaking in low tones and they're disputing among themselves. --> 00:08:57.779 How does he say, I have come down from heaven? 00:08:58.159 --> 00:08:59.000 We know this guy. 00:08:59.439 --> 00:09:01.419 We know he used to Joseph, the carpenter. 00:09:01.500 --> 00:09:02.600 Now he's the carpenter. 00:09:02.959 --> 00:09:04.819 We get this insight in Mark 6, 3. 00:09:04.820 --> 00:09:12.780 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? 00:09:13.240 --> 00:09:15.720 And are not these his sisters here with us? 00:09:15.960 --> 00:09:18.320 And they took offense at him. 00:09:18.700 --> 00:09:19.820 We know who had access to Pontius Pilate, they were not opposed. 00:09:48.020 --> 00:09:54.300 Even today, Satan has no interest opposing the worship of Buddhists or Muslims, does he? 00:09:54.299 --> the grammar, these Greek words, these words that are breathed out by the Holy Spirit through the apostles, let them kind of paint that picture in your mind what this is like for God to save a sinner. want to illustrate a cross-shaped ministry, how it's God exalting with the final moments of Stephen, the first martyr of the church in the new covenant. 00:19:16.620 --> 00:19:21.440 Stephen was 00:28:46.860 That's how God revealed himself to Moses. 00:28:47.600 --> 00:28:50.220 This is the covenant Lord Jehovah himself. 00:28:51.040 --> 00:28:55.759 I am, Jesus says, the living bread that came down from heaven. 00:28:56.160 --> 00:29:01.720 If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. 00:29:02.240 --> 00:29:07.720 And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 00:29:07.920 --> 00:29:09.560 Do you hear how personal this is? 00:29:09.559 --> 00:29:14.179 I will give my flesh, my very body, my very blood. 00:29:15.240 --> 00:29:16.819 And you must eat. 00:29:20.079 --> 00:29:24.579 He creates a contrast here using the analogy with manna. 00:29:24.579 --> 00:29:30.960 So God fed your ancestors' bodies with manna in the wilderness, he tells them. sustained life for the Jews while their bodies were breathing. 00:30:01.240 --> 00:30:04.259 But Jesus gives life to believers forever. 00:30:04.959 --> 00:30:06.139 And it's not just for Jews. 00:30:06.219 --> 00:30:07.719 It's for all the nations. 00:30:08.399 --> 00:30:10.899 God gave the gift of manna as a sign. 00:30:11.419 --> 00:30:16.399 But when Jesus came, God gave himself, the one to whom the sign pointed all along. 00:30:16.400 --> 00:30:20.820 Really, the manna cost the creator of the world nothing. 00:30:21.720 --> 00:30:27.620 Just as he makes the dew fall on the grass every morning, the manna would show up, the sweet bread from heaven. 00:30:28.620 --> 00:30:34.480 But he gave his son to ransom sinners at the greatest cost. 00:30:34.480 --> 00:30:39.519 And Jesus
