00:01:11.460 Let me read this for us. 00:01:12.719 --> 00:01:14.579 Now, these are the generations of Terah. 00:01:15.340 --> 00:01:17.739 Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran. 00:01:18.200 --> 00:01:19.579 And Haran fathered Lot. 00:01:19.579 --> 00:01:24.939 Haran died in the presence of his father, Terah, and the land of his kindred, and Ur of the Chaldeans. 00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:27.259 And Abram and Nahor took wives. 00:01:28.200 --> 00:01:29.879 The name of Abram's wife was Sarah. 00:01:30.280 --> 00:01:32.019 And the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah. 00:01:32.480 --> 00:01:34.700 The Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran. 00:02:39.280 --> 00:02:46.439 Well, this morning, we've pretty much come to the end of our sermon series in Genesis 1 through 11. 00:02:47.100 --> 00:02:50.400 But, obviously, we haven't come to the end of the book of Genesis. 00:02:50.400 --> 00:02:55.539 Actually, we've come to the critical turning point. 00:02:57.180 --> 00:03:02.219 And it's not just the critical turning point of the book of Genesis, but really of the whole Old Testament. 00:03:03.000 --> 00:03:08.120 This is the turning point that will set the course of the rest of redemptive history. 00:03:10.140 --> 00:03:11.000 This is it. 00:03:11.180 --> 00:03:17.800 This is where the story turns to something special and particular and saving and exciting. 00:03:17.800 --> 00:03:21.600 This is where God's story takes its turn. 00:03:24.380 --> 00:03:30.320 And because of that, this passage is meant to serve as a turning point for our lives, too. 00:03:32.140 --> 00:03:38.900 Here is a passage that, if you will hear it, if we will hear it, will turn your whole life around. 00:03:40.020 --> 00:03:43.220 Set you on a new trajectory and never leave you the same. 00:03:43.219 --> 00:03:51.860 What happens in Genesis, what happens in the life of Abram, later to be called Abraham, in the history of redemption, it can happen in your life, too. 00:03:54.000 --> 00:03:54.860 So, what is it? 00:03:55.340 --> 00:03:57.120 What is actually going on here? 00:03:57.780 --> 00:04:01.340 Well, there are three pieces to this turning point that I want us to look at today. 00:04:01.579 --> 00:04:04.379 And they're all found in verses 1 through 3 of chapter 12. 00:04:04.379 --> 00:04:10.359 And the first thing that we see is the blessing that we all need. 00:04:11.680 --> 00:04:13.419 The blessing we all need. 00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:17.459 God calls Abram at the beginning of chapter 12 and says, 00:04:18.100 --> 00:04:20.600 I will bless you. 00:04:21.959 --> 00:04:26.500 And then in verse 3, we see that this blessing is meant to reach all the families of the earth. 00:04:26.500 --> 00:04:33.339 What is this universal blessing that begins with Abraham and spreads to the ends of the earth? 00:04:35.779 --> 00:04:40.860 Now, in order to understand this blessing, we have to see it in the context of the book of Genesis so far. 00:04:41.019 --> 00:04:46.540 Because at first glance, it looks like it means nothing more than Abraham having a lot of descendants. 00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:47.920 I'll make you a great nation. 00:04:48.100 --> 00:04:49.540 And getting a great reputation. 00:04:49.939 --> 00:04:51.000 I'll make your name great. 00:04:53.379 --> 00:04:56.120 Now, for Abraham, this blessing certainly does mean that. 00:04:56.120 --> 00:05:02.340 But the heart of this blessing, this universal blessing for all families of the earth, 00:05:02.459 --> 00:05:04.160 it's much deeper than that. 00:05:06.360 --> 00:05:14.639 After all, material blessing isn't really what we ultimately need. 00:05:15.560 --> 00:05:16.500 Is it? 00:05:18.220 --> 00:05:23.980 Of course, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't seek to sacrificially help others physically, 00:05:23.980 --> 00:05:26.160 financially, socially, educationally. 00:05:26.240 --> 00:05:29.740 All those things are entailed in loving our neighbor as ourself. 00:05:29.819 --> 00:05:30.580 They're good things. 00:05:30.660 --> 00:05:31.540 They are important things. 00:05:31.819 --> 00:05:33.020 They're worthy things. 00:05:33.819 --> 00:05:38.280 But what do we really need ultimately, eternally? 00:05:38.279 --> 00:05:47.399 How many millionaires, though they have no material needs, humanly speaking, aren't really satisfied? 00:05:47.399 --> 00:05:55.359 How many movie stars, though everyone recognizes their name and face, aren't really at peace? 00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:08.600 I was just, I've been reading a journal lately of a famous 20th century spiritual writer who spent some missionary time in Latin America. 00:06:08.600 --> 00:06:17.900 And he reflects on the fact that, though here he is in the middle of one of the poorest suburbs of Lima, Peru, ministering among the poor, 00:06:18.340 --> 00:06:20.980 still his heart aches for something more. 00:06:22.040 --> 00:06:27.780 Why is it that even our best efforts at philanthropy can still leave our hearts longing? 00:06:27.779 --> 00:06:34.439 What makes us think that more money and more approval will cure the deep ache that we feel? 00:06:36.739 --> 00:06:39.979 So what is this blessing, then, here in Genesis 12? 00:06:43.139 --> 00:06:45.359 Well, consider with me, then, the context of Genesis. 00:06:46.039 --> 00:06:50.839 Back in chapter 11, verse 10, we're given another genealogy. 00:06:51.339 --> 00:06:54.639 How many genealogies are we going to see in Genesis 1 through 11? 00:06:54.739 --> 00:06:55.619 Not another one. 00:06:55.620 --> 00:06:58.300 Yes, another genealogy, starting in verse 10. 00:06:58.420 --> 00:07:03.160 This time, from Shem, the son of Noah, down to Abraham, the son of Terah. 00:07:03.699 --> 00:07:07.220 And from Shem to Abraham is 10 generations. 00:07:08.780 --> 00:07:14.680 Now, if you've been coming to Trinity this fall, that might remind you of another earlier genealogy in Genesis 1 through 11. 00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:20.819 In chapter 5, Genesis gives us the genealogy from Adam to Noah. 00:07:20.819 --> 00:07:26.300 And from Adam to Noah, you guessed it, there are 10 generations. 00:07:27.420 --> 00:07:33.379 So you start to see that there's a literary shape going on in this early part of Genesis. 00:07:34.180 --> 00:07:35.060 Think about it. 00:07:35.139 --> 00:07:37.779 In Genesis 1 through 5, what do we have? 00:07:38.279 --> 00:07:44.100 Creation, fall, and then this sort of stretch of 10 generations. 00:07:44.100 --> 00:07:47.600 In Genesis 6 through 11, what do we have? 00:07:47.820 --> 00:07:53.760 The flood and its new creation, the fall of Babel, and then 10 generations. 00:07:54.660 --> 00:08:00.740 You see, these 10 generations are a signal that God's redemptive plan is moving forward. 00:08:01.780 --> 00:08:06.460 We're taking a big leap ahead into the next significant event. 00:08:06.459 --> 00:08:12.859 Now, what happened after the fall of Genesis 3 and 4 and those 10 generations? 00:08:14.479 --> 00:08:15.120 The flood. 00:08:16.879 --> 00:08:17.959 Worldwide judgment. 00:08:20.299 --> 00:08:25.219 So what would we expect to happen after the Tower of Babel in Genesis 11 in these 10 generations? 00:08:25.919 --> 00:08:27.759 Humanity rebelling against God. 00:08:28.459 --> 00:08:32.340 Again, seeking their own way and our own ambitions and their own kingdom. 00:08:32.340 --> 00:08:35.899 If a flood fell the first time, what's going to come this time? 00:08:36.460 --> 00:08:41.080 But this time, it's different. 00:08:42.400 --> 00:08:43.759 A flood doesn't fall. 00:08:45.440 --> 00:08:48.519 Instead, God makes a promise. 00:08:49.960 --> 00:08:51.519 A binding promise. 00:08:52.160 --> 00:08:53.780 A covenant with Abraham. 00:08:54.940 --> 00:08:57.040 I will bless you. 00:08:59.139 --> 00:09:00.639 Wonder of wonders. 00:09:01.240 --> 00:09:03.519 When humanity deserves judgment, 00:09:03.519 --> 00:09:06.600 God speaks a word of blessing. 00:09:08.460 --> 00:09:11.039 And as he speaks that word of blessing, 00:09:11.840 --> 00:09:15.620 don't you hear an echo of Genesis 1? 00:09:18.220 --> 00:09:24.740 The story of God's creation in Genesis 1 resounds with blessing, does it not? 00:09:24.740 --> 00:09:27.299 God delighting over his creation. 00:09:27.620 --> 00:09:28.740 Declaring it all good. 00:09:29.039 --> 00:09:31.299 Declaring it even very good. 00:09:31.919 --> 00:09:36.480 From the highest star to the most obscure atom, the whole thing. 00:09:36.779 --> 00:09:37.560 Very good. 00:09:37.779 --> 00:09:41.779 And at the climax of that story of creation in Genesis 1 28, 00:09:42.120 --> 00:09:44.320 after God creates humanity in his own image, 00:09:44.600 --> 00:09:45.180 the text says, 00:09:45.179 --> 00:09:47.599 God blessed them. 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:55.659 Now, we don't use this language of blessing much in our day and age, in our culture. 00:09:56.639 --> 00:09:57.219 Do we? 00:09:57.620 --> 00:09:58.859 Sounds kind of weird, doesn't it? 00:09:59.319 --> 00:10:00.659 I bless you, my son. 00:10:01.039 --> 00:10:02.399 I bless you, my daughter. 00:10:02.479 --> 00:10:03.739 That's a strange language for us. 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:04.239 I get it. 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:10.600 But you know, we know the feeling when we get it, don't we? 00:10:12.279 --> 00:10:16.700 Like a father or a mother who takes their child up in their arms and says, 00:10:16.919 --> 00:10:19.399 you, I love you. 00:10:19.960 --> 00:10:24.220 And I know you'll do great things and I will be with you every step of the way. 00:10:24.320 --> 00:10:24.840 It's you. 00:10:26.840 --> 00:10:31.039 Deep down in our bones, we know what it means to be blessed, 00:10:31.039 --> 00:10:36.579 to be accepted, to be approved, to find favor in someone's eyes. 00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:41.259 Yes, we know it, even if we don't use this language for it. 00:10:41.579 --> 00:10:47.120 But perhaps we know it most, tragically, by its absence. 00:10:49.639 --> 00:10:53.360 Those deep wounds of rejection, of abandonment, 00:10:53.919 --> 00:10:58.919 we know at our gut level what blessing means because so often we don't have it. 00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:05.319 But deeper under those human rejections and abandonments, 00:11:05.379 --> 00:11:10.299 even deeper still, the heart knows that divine blessing, 00:11:11.120 --> 00:11:14.779 that peace with God intended in creation, 00:11:15.240 --> 00:11:18.839 that creational, divine blessing. 00:11:19.459 --> 00:11:22.500 Deep down we know it's been lost. 00:11:24.879 --> 00:11:28.179 That we're actually out of joint with our creator, 00:11:28.179 --> 00:11:30.519 that we're alienated from our true home. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:36.599 And again, is this not the story that we've been reading in Genesis? 00:11:36.759 --> 00:11:39.120 Is this not the history of everyone and everything? 00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:41.559 Creation begins in blessing, 00:11:41.919 --> 00:11:43.539 but humans rebel against God, 00:11:43.799 --> 00:11:44.899 reject God as God, 00:11:44.939 --> 00:11:46.559 and the result is curse. 00:11:49.019 --> 00:11:50.980 Genesis 3 tells the whole story. 00:11:51.399 --> 00:11:53.539 Genesis 4 describes the fallout. 00:11:53.539 --> 00:11:55.539 And the rest of human history, 00:11:55.539 --> 00:11:56.000 and the rest of human history, friends, 00:11:56.079 --> 00:12:01.139 is the sad tale of creatures seeking some sort of remedy 00:12:01.139 --> 00:12:06.699 for that lost blessing in created things rather than their creator. 00:12:09.699 --> 00:12:11.639 Why doesn't the money satisfy? 00:12:12.139 --> 00:12:14.179 Why doesn't the fame bring peace? 00:12:14.379 --> 00:12:16.980 Because the real blessing you're longing for 00:12:16.980 --> 00:12:19.579 isn't from a creature or a created thing. 00:12:19.580 --> 00:12:23.560 You were made to have the blessing of your maker. 00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:29.340 When God says to Abram, 00:12:29.620 --> 00:12:31.420 I'll bless those who bless you, 00:12:31.520 --> 00:12:32.879 and those who dishonor you, 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:33.720 I will curse. 00:12:34.120 --> 00:12:36.840 He's not just saying that the status of the nations 00:12:36.840 --> 00:12:39.080 will be determined by their relationship to Abram. 00:12:39.220 --> 00:12:40.500 But more than that, --> 00:12:52.000 to be jealous over Abram like a lover. 00:12:53.199 --> 00:12:54.879 That's what these words are talking about. 00:12:54.939 --> 00:12:58.819 The quality of the Lord's relationship 00:13:22.439 This is the great problem, 00:13:22.939 --> 00:13:24.139 the great question 00:13:24.139 --> 00:13:27.459 that hangs pregnant over the entire Old Testament. 00:13:30.059 --> 00:13:32.240 In Genesis 6, after 10 generations, 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:33.419 it was a flood that fell, 00:13:33.500 --> 00:13:34.779 and only a few were saved. 00:13:34.779 --> 00:13:37.159 In Genesis 12, 00:13:37.339 --> 00:13:38.439 after the 10 generations, 00:13:38.639 --> 00:13:40.659 we expect some sort of judgment, 00:13:40.819 --> 00:13:42.159 but the flood doesn't fall. 00:13:43.539 --> 00:13:46.659 On what basis does this blessing to Abram 00:13:46.659 --> 00:13:49.179 for all families of the earth come to us? 00:13:52.480 --> 00:13:54.860 And the answer to that question wouldn't come 00:13:54.860 --> 00:13:58.819 for almost 1,500 years after Abram. 00:13:58.820 --> 00:14:03.640 The curse humanity deserved, 00:14:03.800 --> 00:14:05.000 that you and I deserved, 00:14:05.360 --> 00:14:08.120 would actually fall like a flood, 00:14:08.379 --> 00:14:10.500 but it would fall on another. 00:14:12.500 --> 00:14:15.780 It would fall on the true offspring of Abraham, 00:14:16.320 --> 00:14:18.700 on the child born into Abram's family 00:14:18.700 --> 00:14:20.680 who would take up our humanity 00:14:20.680 --> 00:14:23.500 and live a life in perfect acceptance 00:14:23.500 --> 00:14:24.860 with his heavenly father. 00:14:24.860 --> 00:14:29.060 He would be utterly blessed. 00:14:31.039 --> 00:14:32.560 God would say over him, 00:14:32.860 --> 00:14:34.440 this is my beloved son 00:14:34.440 --> 00:14:36.240 in whom I'm well pleased. 00:14:37.600 --> 00:14:39.480 And then at 30 years of age, 00:14:39.480 --> 00:14:40.919 after walking in perfect, 00:14:41.480 --> 00:14:43.519 blessed fellowship with his father, 00:14:44.039 --> 00:14:46.019 Jesus would go willingly to a cross 00:14:46.019 --> 00:14:48.000 and become a curse for us. 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:51.419 And all the wretchedness of sin 00:14:51.419 --> 00:14:53.659 and all the dark intentions 00:14:53.659 --> 00:14:56.100 and malicious thoughts of our hearts, 00:14:56.600 --> 00:14:58.960 Jesus Christ would bear all of it. 00:15:02.539 --> 00:15:04.159 The Old Testament law said, 00:15:04.399 --> 00:15:06.879 cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. 00:15:07.940 --> 00:15:09.320 And in the first century, 00:15:09.320 --> 00:15:11.820 there was no greater expression of that 00:15:11.820 --> 00:15:13.559 than a Roman cross. 00:15:13.559 --> 00:15:17.719 As the victims hung naked 00:15:17.719 --> 00:15:22.099 and shamed and bleeding and mocked, 00:15:22.759 --> 00:15:25.799 the pain of crucifixion was only matched 00:15:25.799 --> 00:15:29.879 by the public humiliation and shame of it. 00:15:31.199 --> 00:15:33.979 You see, the Romans saved crucifixion 00:15:33.979 --> 00:15:36.559 for the social nobodies. 00:15:37.259 --> 00:15:41.179 This was the way the empire disposed of its trash. 00:15:41.179 --> 00:15:49.239 And there, God incarnate hung. 00:15:54.239 --> 00:15:57.239 The flood of human depravity 00:15:57.239 --> 00:16:02.019 and the curse of sin poured upon him. 00:16:04.579 --> 00:16:05.259 Why? 00:16:05.259 --> 00:16:11.319 So that the blessing you and I were created to have 00:16:11.319 --> 00:16:13.019 could be ours once more. 00:16:14.539 --> 00:16:17.700 In love, Christ became a curse 00:16:17.700 --> 00:16:20.439 so that a blessing might come to all nations, 00:16:20.439 --> 00:16:21.159 to you and me. 00:16:21.500 --> stands in our place of the curse 00:16:30.700 --> 00:16:32.399 so that we, the cursed ones, 00:16:32.460 --> 00:16:33.360 could receive a blessing. 00:16:33.360 --> 00:16:38.899 What wonderful good news. 00:16:42.500 --> 00:16:43.399 Consider then, friends, 00:16:43.460 --> 00:16:46.000 that you cannot earn this blessing of God. 00:16:46.899 --> 00:16:48.639 That's also part of what Paul's
