and with health in a way that's God-honoring, 00:01:24.679 --> 00:01:26.439 that builds people up. 00:01:27.000 --> 00:01:31.879 We also see authority that's exercised foolishly, 00:01:32.379 --> 00:01:39.259 that is hurtful, abusive, self-serving, and does others harm. 00:01:39.260 --> 00:01:41.900 We see it all in the Scriptures. 00:01:44.740 --> 00:01:49.020 For the next three Sundays, we're going to be in John chapter 5. 00:01:49.180 --> 00:01:54.520 And John chapter 5 is all about the authority of Jesus Christ. 00:01:54.519 --> 00:01:56.759 And it is good news. 00:01:57.799 --> 00:02:00.539 So this morning, we're going to look at John 5, 1 through 18, 00:02:00.719 --> 00:02:04.000 where Jesus heals a man on the Sabbath. 00:02:04.359 --> 00:02:10.319 And you may be thinking, how does healing a man on the Sabbath have anything to do with Jesus' authority? 00:02:10.639 --> 00:02:12.659 Why does that matter to me? 00:02:12.659 --> 00:02:20.000 Well, if you've come into the building with any kind of physical ailment in which you are hoping to be healed from, 00:02:20.139 --> 00:02:21.340 this is for you. 00:02:23.819 --> 00:02:27.719 The authority of Jesus over our bodies is good. 00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:32.620 What happens with the healing of this man on the Sabbath 00:02:32.620 --> 00:02:36.259 was actually Jesus taking issue, 00:02:36.759 --> 00:02:41.139 challenging the authority of the Jewish religious leaders of the day, 00:02:41.139 --> 00:02:42.539 and they didn't like it. 00:02:42.579 --> 00:02:45.559 In fact, they respond in a way that goes something like this. 00:02:46.259 --> 00:02:49.779 Who gave you the right to heal on the Sabbath? 00:02:52.239 --> 00:02:56.939 And in fact, in this passage, we'll see that Jesus tells them what gives him the right 00:02:56.939 --> 00:03:00.439 to heal on the Sabbath and challenge their authority. 00:03:01.279 --> 00:03:05.819 So let me read John chapter 5, 1 through 18. 00:03:06.939 --> 00:03:08.060 Hear the word of God. 00:03:08.060 --> 00:03:12.539 After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:03:13.340 --> 00:03:18.420 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool in Aramaic or Hebrew called Bethesda, 00:03:18.759 --> 00:03:20.960 which has five roofed colonnades. 00:03:21.879 --> 00:03:25.840 In these lay a multitude of invalids, blind, lame, and paralyzed. 00:03:26.280 --> 00:03:29.800 One man was there who had been an invalid for 38 years. 00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:34.000 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:35.939 he said to him, Do you want to be healed? 00:03:36.740 --> 00:03:41.979 The sick man answered him, Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water stirred up, 00:03:42.099 --> 00:03:44.879 and while I am going, another steps down before me. 00:03:45.419 --> 00:03:49.680 Jesus said to him, Get up, take up your bed, and walk. it was Jesus who had healed him. 00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:37.620 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, 00:04:37.719 --> 00:04:39.860 because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 00:04:40.819 --> 00:04:44.819 But Jesus answered them, My Father is working until now, and I am working. 00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:48.539 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him. 00:04:48.540 --> 00:04:51.660 Because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, 00:04:51.800 --> 00:04:57.040 but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. 00:04:57.100 --> 00:04:58.620 May God bless the hearing of his word. 00:05:00.680 --> 00:05:02.680 So here's how we're going to proceed this morning. 00:05:02.920 --> 00:05:06.280 I'm just going to get our bearings, and then we're going to look at three scenes. 00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:09.320 Scene one, healing poolside. 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:12.140 Scene two, holiness police. 00:05:12.720 --> 00:05:16.460 I'm going to have some helpful noises at that point. 00:05:16.459 --> 00:05:21.339 Scene three, a heated provocation, and then I'll bring it all together. 00:05:22.219 --> 00:05:26.959 What gives Jesus the right to heal on the Sabbath? 00:05:28.279 --> 00:05:29.339 Let's get our bearings. 00:05:30.680 --> 00:05:36.079 In verses one through three, we get a sense of this whole situation. 00:05:36.339 --> 00:05:38.419 So it's setting up this whole situation. 00:05:38.599 --> 00:05:43.659 In 5.1, we are told that after this, there was a feast. 00:05:43.660 --> 00:05:44.420 What's the this? 00:05:44.500 --> 00:05:46.480 Well, Jesus, remember, was down in Jerusalem. 00:05:46.840 --> 00:05:50.939 He goes up to Galilee, but he goes through Samaria to get to Galilee. 00:05:51.120 --> 00:05:53.320 Plants the first church of Sychar, remember that? 00:05:53.560 --> 00:06:00.140 And then he goes to Galilee, and there he heals the son of an official who is on the brink of death. 00:06:00.860 --> 00:06:04.320 It's after this, Jesus is like, time to go back to Jerusalem. 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:06.340 And he went back for a feast. 00:06:06.339 --> 00:06:14.699 But what I want you to notice is in chapter 5, verse 9, a very important when. 00:06:15.619 --> 00:06:17.039 And it would be this kind of when. 00:06:17.119 --> 00:06:19.120 It would be dun, dun, dun. 00:06:20.699 --> 00:06:22.179 Now that day was the Sabbath. 00:06:23.699 --> 00:06:26.539 It's the Sabbath which Jesus heals. 00:06:26.899 --> 00:06:33.139 It is the weekly holy day of the Jews in which they are commanded to rest from their labor. 00:06:33.139 --> 00:06:35.219 It's Exodus 20, verse 8. 00:06:35.339 --> 00:06:37.919 It's the fourth of the Ten Commandments. 00:06:38.279 --> 00:06:43.839 And just to let you know, it was no accident that Jesus was healing on the Sabbath. 00:06:44.659 --> 00:06:46.839 Where this takes place, it's in Jerusalem. 00:06:47.500 --> 00:06:50.399 It's the religious epicenter of Judaism. 00:06:50.579 --> 00:06:53.500 It's where all the major feasts took place. 00:06:53.579 --> 00:06:59.120 And so you would have this swelling of the city when people would come to observe these feasts. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:02.379 And surrounding the city, there was this wall. 00:07:03.280 --> 00:07:07.879 And in the wall, there were multiple gates for people to go in and to come out of. 00:07:08.019 --> 00:07:13.040 And in close to one of the gates was this pool, the Pool of Bethesda. 00:07:13.480 --> 00:07:14.780 Archaeology has discovered it. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:17.340 They found the colonnades and everything. 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:22.280 Colonnades are a column or a row of columns. 00:07:22.720 --> 00:07:24.100 And it was roofed. 00:07:24.100 --> 00:07:32.820 So the idea is these columns with the roof provided shade for whoever was there to be at the pool of Bethesda. 00:07:34.720 --> 00:07:36.720 And that's what's going on here in verse 3. 00:07:37.800 --> 00:07:43.780 We have a multitude of invalids gathered together at the pool of Bethesda. 00:07:43.779 --> 00:07:48.979 They are all image bearers, but they have various problems. 00:07:49.219 --> 00:07:50.959 Blindness, lameness, paralyzed. 00:07:51.679 --> 00:07:54.339 And though they're all image bearers, they have something else in common. 00:07:54.439 --> 00:07:55.179 Do you know what it is? 00:07:56.039 --> 00:07:57.459 They all wanted to be healed. 00:08:00.159 --> 00:08:04.659 They're there because they believe that the pool of Bethesda has healing properties. 00:08:05.879 --> 00:08:09.079 Now, for those of you who are very careful in your reading of your Bible, 00:08:09.079 --> 00:08:13.719 did you notice anything odd between verse 3 and verse 5? 00:08:15.620 --> 00:08:16.740 There's no verse 4. 00:08:17.680 --> 00:08:18.560 What's going on? 00:08:19.139 --> 00:08:20.139 Can we trust our Bibles? 00:08:20.859 --> 00:08:22.079 Yes, we can trust our Bibles. 00:08:22.620 --> 00:08:23.579 Here's what's going on. 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:31.719 Verse 4 was included in a lot of the early manuscripts of this passage, 00:08:31.860 --> 00:08:34.019 but not the earliest and most reliable. 00:08:34.019 --> 00:08:44.199 So most likely, verse 4 is some kind of scribal note describing why people are gathering at this pool. 00:08:44.419 --> 00:08:46.279 And I've got it for you, so let me read it to you. 00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:47.039 It says, 00:08:47.159 --> 00:08:52.539 For an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred the water. 00:08:52.939 --> 00:08:59.299 Whoever stepped in first, well, that person was healed of whatever disease they had. 00:08:59.299 --> 00:09:04.199 And so how confident we can be and that that is accurate, you know, I'm not sure. 00:09:04.559 --> 00:09:08.259 But let's just say there's enough here to say, okay, there's something going on. 00:09:08.859 --> 00:09:17.039 And there's a competition among all those people who are at the pool of Bethesda to get into the pool first. 00:09:17.979 --> 00:09:20.139 This is a competitive healing. 00:09:21.240 --> 00:09:23.000 First come, first healed. 00:09:23.000 --> 00:09:28.940 Now, before you start judging these first century invalids, 00:09:29.379 --> 00:09:32.480 oh, these poor, uneducated, hurting people. 00:09:34.100 --> 00:09:35.559 Let me just remind you. 00:09:36.539 --> 00:09:43.059 We live in the 21st century among a host of invalids. 00:09:43.059 --> 00:09:55.739 We have people of all kinds seeking, longing for healing, to be made complete, to experience peace, to be made full. 00:09:57.299 --> 00:10:00.619 They may not be waiting for the stirring of the water in the pool of Bethesda, 00:10:00.679 --> 00:10:02.539 but they're waiting for another kind of stirring. 00:10:02.659 --> 00:10:03.879 You know what I'm talking about. 00:10:04.519 --> 00:10:06.500 My wife, Jenny, has rheumatoid arthritis. 00:10:06.500 --> 00:10:13.360 And for the last three months, we've been hoping and praying for some kind of stirring when it comes to her medication. 00:10:15.240 --> 00:10:21.519 So maybe you're hoping for a stirring of medication for what's ailing you. 00:10:21.620 --> 00:10:27.620 Or maybe you're hoping for a stirring of a new doctor with the hope of a new diagnosis, 00:10:28.179 --> 00:10:29.840 with the hope of a new treatment. 00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:39.180 Maybe you're hoping for a stirring that there would be some kind of organ donation. 00:10:40.840 --> 00:10:44.780 Maybe it's not you, but it's someone you know who needs a new liver or a new heart. 00:10:45.620 --> 00:10:47.940 And you're just waiting for hope to stir. 00:10:47.940 --> 00:10:53.600 As we get our bearings here, I just want to make sure that you understand 00:10:53.600 --> 00:11:00.160 what this multitude of invalids were experiencing at the pool of Bethesda in the first century, 00:11:00.380 --> 00:11:03.320 we know firsthand in the 21st century. 00:11:04.900 --> 00:11:08.060 So now that we've got our bearings, let's move to scene one. 00:11:09.960 --> 00:11:11.380 Healing poolside. 00:11:11.379 --> 00:11:18.480 In verse 5, we're introduced to a man who's been paralyzed for 38 years. 00:11:18.539 --> 00:11:22.399 We're not told he's paralyzed in this verse, but we learn that later on. 00:11:23.240 --> 00:11:25.259 And it really begs the question, 00:11:26.519 --> 00:11:32.840 has this man been going to the pool of Bethesda for 38 years? 00:11:32.840 --> 00:11:43.160 Has he been going there hoping to be healed somehow to get into the water first and then walk out? 00:11:43.940 --> 00:11:45.220 38 years? 00:11:46.680 --> 00:11:48.259 Maybe just 30 years. 00:11:50.100 --> 00:11:51.160 20 years? 00:11:52.120 --> 00:11:52.860 10? 00:11:53.639 --> 00:11:54.180 3? 00:11:54.940 --> 00:11:55.480 1 year. 00:11:55.980 --> 00:11:57.220 It's a long time. 00:11:57.220 --> 00:12:05.519 It's a long time to be going somewhere, wanting to be healed, hoping for something, but not getting it. 00:12:08.139 --> 00:12:10.040 Jesus comes on the scene in verse 6. 00:12:11.680 --> 00:12:18.940 And he has come to the pool of Bethesda, not because he needs healing, but to heal. 00:12:18.940 --> 00:12:29.100 Of all these multitudes of invalids, Jesus looks on this man lying there. 00:12:29.740 --> 00:12:35.240 And he knows he's been lying there, hoping to be healed for a long time. 00:12:36.080 --> 00:12:37.320 And just a sidebar. 00:12:38.840 --> 00:12:43.040 Isn't it good to know that Jesus, who is sitting at the right hand of God, 00:12:43.039 --> 00:12:48.259 on the throne of grace, he has a direct line of sight on you? 00:12:51.419 --> 00:12:53.919 Well, Jesus sees him lying there and he says, 00:12:54.219 --> 00:12:56.099 do you want to be healed? 00:12:58.259 --> 00:13:03.919 Now, some people have understood this to be Jesus questioning the man's motives. 00:13:04.179 --> 00:13:05.419 It would go something like this. 00:13:05.419 --> 00:13:13.759 If you've been here for so long, but haven't found a way into the pool, 00:13:15.519 --> 00:13:17.519 I mean, do you really want to be healed? 00:13:19.819 --> 00:13:20.959 Is this some kind of hustle? 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:26.559 That's how some people would understand what Jesus is saying. 00:13:27.620 --> 00:13:30.699 And of course, there's definitely people who play the system. 00:13:30.700 --> 00:13:33.940 But I don't think that's what Jesus is going after. 00:13:35.140 --> 00:13:36.940 I think he's going after something else. 00:13:37.140 --> 00:13:41.000 What is clear is that this paralytic believes his only hope for healing 00:13:41.000 --> 00:13:43.140 is to be the first in the pool. 00:13:44.259 --> 00:13:49.980 He has set his hope for healing in a pool. 00:13:51.160 --> 00:13:52.920 In the ability to get there. 00:13:54.920 --> 00:13:58.020 And so when Jesus says, do you want to be healed? 00:13:58.019 --> 00:14:01.220 He answers in verse 7, very politely, sir. 00:14:01.519 --> 00:14:02.939 He's a very polite man. 00:14:03.019 --> 00:14:05.059 But as we go on, we're going to see some things 00:14:05.059 --> 00:14:07.039 that are not too flattering about this paralytic. 00:14:08.819 --> 00:14:09.899 So he says, brought an official's son back from the brink of dead 00:15:42.960 --> 00:15:47.940 with words 22 miles away instantaneously. 00:15:49.060 --> 00:15:50.360 We know who this is, 00:15:50.879 --> 00:15:52.320 but this guy doesn't. 00:15:53.480 --> 00:15:53.940 He says, 00:15:54.100 --> 00:15:54.980 there's no one to help me 00:15:54.980 --> 00:15:58.019 as he speaks to God incarnate. In their minds, 00:16:47.059 --> 00:16:48.319 all of these invalids 00:16:48.319 --> 00:16:50.579 have bought into the same kind of thinking 00:16:50.579 --> 00:16:52.439 that somehow their healing 00:16:52.439 --> 00:16:56.240 is dependent on their ability 00:16:56.240 --> 00:16:58.439 to get them into the pool first. 00:16:59.439 --> 00:17:01.219 You know what that kind of mindset is? 00:17:01.220 --> 00:17:07.259 This mindset is a mindset that is common to man. 00:17:07.400 --> 00:17:09.000 It permeates people's thinking. 00:17:09.680 --> 00:17:12.079 When we think about in terms of getting to heaven, 00:17:12.339 --> 00:17:13.579 the greatest pool of all, 00:17:14.460 --> 00:17:16.440 when we think about getting to heaven, 00:17:16.480 --> 00:17:19.680 many people think it's about what I can do 00:17:19.680 --> 00:17:21.539 to get myself to heaven 00:17:21.539 --> 00:17:23.620 and then I'll be healed of everything. 00:17:26.799 --> 00:17:28.019 It's a common mindset. 00:17:28.019 --> 00:17:33.000 I need to work to get God's grace. 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:37.839 But the thing is, 00:17:38.839 --> 00:17:45.160 just as this paralytics paralysis 00:17:45.160 --> 00:17:48.079 kept him from getting into the pool, 00:17:48.639 --> 00:17:51.299 our sinfulness cripples us 00:17:51.299 --> 00:17:52.799 from getting into heaven. 00:17:53.559 --> 00:17:56.700 That's
