backstory or history. 00:04:13.980 --> 00:04:22.519 It's very widely known in our Christian realm that the Jews and the Samaritans didn't really like each other. 00:04:22.860 --> 00:04:24.620 They didn't have an affinity for each other at all. 00:04:24.920 --> 00:04:26.579 And there are several reasons for that. 00:04:26.579 --> 00:04:29.459 That it was going on for several hundred years, their feuding was. 00:04:30.419 --> 00:04:35.199 There were several reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was actually religiously. 00:04:35.959 --> 00:04:40.459 The Samaritans only believed that the first five books of the Bible, otherwise known as the Pentateuch, 00:04:40.959 --> 00:04:45.219 was what they should heed to or what they should listen to. 00:04:45.319 --> 00:04:46.899 That's what they referred to as their Bible. 00:04:46.899 --> 00:04:51.319 But the Jews wanted to listen and learn from the entire Bible. 00:04:51.579 --> 00:04:55.359 So the Jews looked at the Samaritans and said, you guys are unclean. 00:04:55.620 --> 00:04:58.599 You guys are basically half Christians. 00:04:58.599 --> 00:05:00.159 You're not doing everything the right way. 00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:08.460 So they would do everything in their power to make sure that they did not associate themselves with the Samaritans. 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:11.740 Which brings us to our passage of scripture here. 00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:17.420 Jesus, being a Jew, is going from Judea to Galilee. 00:05:17.860 --> 00:05:21.980 And there are three separate ways to get from Judea to Galilee. 00:05:22.140 --> 00:05:27.240 The quickest way is to go through Samaria from Judea, go through Samaria, get to Galilee. 00:05:27.240 --> 00:05:31.540 But the route the Jews would often take, they would go around. 00:05:31.639 --> 00:05:32.900 There were two routes around. 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:37.160 It took a little bit longer, but the Jews hated the Samaritans so much, 00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:39.340 they thought they were not as good as them, 00:05:39.460 --> 00:05:43.540 so they would take the routes around Samaria so they wouldn't have to go there. 00:05:44.500 --> 00:05:51.000 But I see in verse number four, it says, and he must needs go through Samaria. 00:05:51.400 --> 00:05:55.900 So we already discussed, there was two alternate routes that Christ could have taken. 00:05:55.899 --> 00:05:59.299 He could have taken two alternate routes instead of going through Samaria. 00:05:59.379 --> 00:06:00.299 So why did he do it? 00:06:00.319 --> 00:06:06.419 And why does the Bible say he must needs go through Samaria? 00:06:06.679 --> 00:06:07.639 It's very interesting. 00:06:08.120 --> 00:06:10.719 Because Jesus, being a Jew, he shouldn't want to go through Samaria. 00:06:11.199 --> 00:06:12.879 Samaria doesn't have good people, by the way. 00:06:13.079 --> 00:06:15.419 They don't have a bunch of saved Christians. 00:06:15.419 --> 00:06:19.179 They have a bunch of people that aren't doing the right thing, aren't living the right life. 00:06:19.180 --> 00:06:22.519 But he must needs go through Samaria. 00:06:22.620 --> 00:06:27.220 My first point this morning is the pursuit 00:06:40.079 that the disciples had gone away into the city to get meat. 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:41.079 They went shopping. 00:06:41.639 --> 00:06:44.340 They were doing all the things that they needed to do. 00:06:44.779 --> 00:06:45.459 And here's the deal. 00:06:45.579 --> 00:06:50.259 It could have been very, very easy for Christ to have just gone with his clique. 00:06:50.759 --> 00:06:52.519 Gone with the disciples. 00:06:52.639 --> 00:06:56.099 If we're not careful, I know this happens in school, high schools. 00:06:56.319 --> 00:06:58.399 But if we're not careful, church can become like this. 00:06:58.560 --> 00:06:59.639 It can become very clique-ish. 00:07:00.219 --> 00:07:03.819 Certain people only talk to certain people that they have stuff in common with. 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:06.519 Like these people over here, they're talking about sports. 00:07:06.939 --> 00:07:08.879 These people over here, they're talking about cars. 00:07:09.120 --> 00:07:10.819 These people over here, they're talking about politics. 00:07:11.419 --> 00:07:12.479 Everybody's got a clique. 00:07:12.480 --> 00:07:14.800 But then somebody new walks through the door. 00:07:14.939 --> 00:07:19.700 That lost person, that Samaritan, walks through the door, sees everybody in their cliques, 00:07:20.439 --> 00:07:21.860 and they walk right back out. 00:07:21.980 --> 00:07:24.040 Because they say, that's not a church I want to be a part of. 00:07:24.180 --> 00:07:28.360 That's not a church that has the living water that I'm looking for. 00:07:28.960 --> 00:07:34.900 Jesus Christ went out of his way to make sure he reached one person. 00:07:35.500 --> 00:07:39.400 So first of all today, if you're that one in here that says, I don't have the living water. 00:07:39.399
