scenes at the wedding in Cana. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:39.159 Turning water, and a lot of it, into not just wine, but better wine than the good stuff that they had already been drinking. 00:00:40.240 --> 00:00:47.140 And it was a gracious miracle and a wonderful display of power that he did there. 00:00:47.700 --> 00:00:54.060 Well, this morning we continue the story, and we're picking it up in verse 12 of chapter 2. 00:00:54.060 --> 00:01:03.520 After this, after the wedding, he went down, Jesus did, to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. 00:01:04.439 --> 00:01:06.920 There they stayed for a few days. 00:01:08.180 --> 00:01:08.939 Verse 13. 00:01:09.500 --> 00:01:15.920 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:01:15.920 --> 00:01:22.120 So not too long, they stayed in Capernaum, another town. 00:01:22.700 --> 00:01:28.420 And then the sense of the text here is that very soon after this, the Passover was near. 00:01:28.620 --> 00:01:31.659 And so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 00:01:31.879 --> 00:01:35.540 Now, Passover was a really big deal. 00:01:35.960 --> 00:01:40.099 And so it's a little bit tricky for us to maybe get our heads into that mindset. 00:01:40.099 --> 00:01:44.619 I'm not going to go into explaining the whole significance of the Passover. 00:01:45.140 --> 00:01:52.780 But basically, it was the time of the year where they commemorated how the Lord had delivered them from slavery in Egypt. 00:01:53.140 --> 00:01:54.719 And led them out. 00:01:55.319 --> 00:02:03.579 And the Lord actually commanded that they remember this every year on a specific day. 00:02:04.199 --> 00:02:05.560 And so they did this. 00:02:06.179 --> 00:02:07.739 They celebrated the Passover. 00:02:07.739 --> 00:02:16.479 And not only that, but there was a whole week of festival that followed the Passover called the Festival of Unleavened Bread. 00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:30.199 And it was very common for many of the people to go up to Jerusalem and to celebrate and commemorate both of these things there in Jerusalem. 00:02:30.199 --> 00:02:35.599 So imagine Jerusalem, this city. 00:02:36.039 --> 00:02:39.119 They estimate about 2 million people at the time. 00:02:39.699 --> 00:02:41.259 Good-sized city. 00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:48.439 Imagine the roads coming into Jerusalem jammed with people from all over Israel. 00:02:48.939 --> 00:02:50.719 They've packed their bags up. 00:02:50.839 --> 00:02:54.359 They've got their animals saddled, whatever they had, carts. 00:02:54.360 --> 00:03:05.280 And they're all making the trek up to Jerusalem to celebrate and to commemorate the Passover and the festival which followed. 00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:08.540 Well, Jesus was among those who went up. 00:03:08.700 --> 00:03:16.000 And to put this a little bit into perspective, too, this was not just the local people in Israel that were coming to this. 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:22.560 It was common that Jews would travel from all over the Mediterranean world to be there for Passover. 00:03:22.719 --> 00:03:28.120 This was like one of the big holy days, holy festivals of the year. 00:03:28.120 --> 00:03:37.360 And so just picture those entrances, those streets, those main roads coming into Jerusalem full of people. 00:03:37.500 --> 00:03:49.879 And the city of about 2 million just swelling with the influx of visitors, people from all over who had come to take part in the festival and to celebrate the Passover. 00:03:50.480 --> 00:03:57.240 Well, Jesus was one of those people who went up to Jerusalem and his disciples went with him. 00:03:57.240 --> 00:03:58.580 And we'll get to that in a moment. 00:04:00.360 --> 00:04:07.120 At some point in his time there, Jesus goes to the temple. 00:04:08.939 --> 00:04:14.320 And I want us to try to imagine a little bit of what this looked like. 00:04:14.400 --> 00:04:21.139 It's hard for us because it's hard to envision the courts, the temple courts are empty. 00:04:48.780 --> 00:04:50.220 There's almost nobody in them. 00:04:50.280 --> 00:04:53.280 I want you to imagine them just jammed full of people. 00:04:53.760 00:05:15.759 In the temple courts, Jesus found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 00:05:18.439 --> 00:05:20.040 So these people were there. 00:05:20.540 --> 00:05:26.379 And of course, they were offering a service to those who came, especially at this time for the Passover. 00:05:26.379 --> 00:05:34.680 Those people who were selling cattle, sheep and doves, they were offering these for sale for sacrifices to the Lord. 00:05:35.219 --> 00:05:38.579 That was kind of the main purpose of those specific animals. 00:05:39.459 --> 00:05:43.079 And those exchanging money, sitting at tables. 00:05:43.540 --> 00:05:47.019 At the temple, there was a very specific currency that they accepted there. 00:05:47.480 --> 00:05:52.779 And of course, the Roman Empire was made up of all kinds of different nations that had been conquered, 00:05:52.779 --> 00:05:56.419 each with their different kinds of currencies and stuff. 00:05:56.539 --> 00:05:59.239 And they only accepted one at the temple. 00:05:59.399 --> 00:06:02.339 And so that's what the exchangers were there to do, 00:06:02.459 --> 00:06:07.459 was to change their money into the kind accepted at the temple for offerings, 00:06:07.559 --> 00:06:10.379 as well as for purchasing these animals. 00:06:10.379 --> 00:06:20.920 So this is what Jesus, it says Jesus saw and whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:44.859 He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 00:06:45.699 --> 00:07:20.699 --> 00:07:25.159 on those who are selling animals and those who are exchanging currencies. 00:07:26.259 --> 00:07:29.339 And then he does what probably nobody was expecting. 00:07:30.279 --> 00:07:31.519 He makes a whip, 00:07:31.800 --> 00:07:35.560 and he begins to untie the animals, 00:07:35.819 --> 00:07:36.819 set them loose, 00:07:36.959 --> 00:07:39.839 and drive them right out the temple gates. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:43.500 In fact, it says he drove all from the temple courts, 00:07:43.560 --> 00:07:45.519 and probably the sense of that, 00:07:45.639 --> 00:07:46.680 depending on your translation, 00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:49.240 is that he drove the sellers out as well. 00:07:49.240 --> 00:07:52.620 I don't think he used the whip on them. 00:07:52.620 -->
