they're trying to ascertain just how the nation is going, 00:02:12.460 --> 00:02:14.180 what direction it's going in. 00:02:14.180 --> 00:02:17.219 And a lot of people get very excited about it, that between 1930 and 2010, 00:02:38.400 --> 00:02:44.480 the number of church members in the United Kingdom had reduced by 50%. 00:02:44.480 --> 00:02:48.259 The last census in 2021, 00:02:49.020 --> 00:02:52.500 it was said that for the first time in the history of these census, 00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:59.159 that Christianity had fallen below 50% of the nation identifying as Christian. 00:02:59.920 --> 00:03:01.400 It was down at 46%. 00:03:02.340 --> 00:03:06.240 So these kind of surveys, they tell us different things, 00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:11.700 but they don't always give a true reflection of everything that's going on. 00:03:12.240 --> 00:03:17.180 Just like when you have a house that may be going on the market, going for sale, 00:03:17.500 --> 00:03:20.040 you have to get a surveyor in to look at it. 00:03:20.439 --> 00:03:23.500 But the surveyor isn't able to tell everything about the house. 00:03:23.620 --> 00:03:27.500 You'll often see in a surveyor's report a line foundations. 00:03:35.139 --> 00:03:38.779 So the surveyor has only gone by what he can see. 00:03:39.799 --> 00:03:45.079 But in many ways, that might be missing the most important thing about that things that can be missed. 00:03:54.500 --> 00:03:58.079 A survey doesn't always tell us all the answers. 00:03:58.080 --> 00:04:04.060 But as we look at this passage here in Isaiah together this evening, Isaiah chapter 6, 00:04:04.740 --> 00:04:11.060 what we find here is Isaiah the prophet very much taking part in a survey of the nation, 00:04:11.860 --> 00:04:17.259 looking around and seeing what's happening in the land that he lives in, 00:04:17.319 --> 00:04:20.080 among the people that he is living with, 00:04:20.160 --> 00:04:23.420 and where he finds himself in all of this as well. 00:04:23.420 --> 00:04:27.300 And so it's an important time in his life, 00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:30.640 a time when he's looking around and taking stock. 00:04:31.100 --> 00:04:36.740 And we see that in many ways, it seems bleak for God's people. 00:04:36.800 --> 00:04:41.879 And even for Isaiah himself, it seems to be bleak in some ways. 00:04:41.960 --> 00:04:43.220 It's a time of sorrow, 00:04:43.939 --> 00:04:47.939 a situation in the land that's looking very difficult. 00:04:47.939 --> 00:04:51.620 But the deeper you go into his survey, 00:04:51.740 --> 00:04:53.480 you see that there is something else, 00:04:54.000 --> 00:04:56.420 and something greater to be seen. 00:04:56.939 --> 00:05:00.220 It reveals much about the situation that he's in. 00:05:00.600 --> 00:05:02.600 It reveals much about himself. 00:05:02.939 --> 00:05:03.860 But above all, 00:05:04.420 --> 00:05:08.339 this survey that he's doing reveals much more about God, 00:05:09.000 --> 00:05:11.659 and the need to lean on him. 00:05:12.839 --> 00:05:15.600 And Isaiah chapter 6 is very much a chapter 00:05:15.600 --> 00:05:19.520 that we see turning from a sense of despair 00:05:19.520 --> 00:05:23.120 to a sense of delighting in God, 00:05:23.180 --> 00:05:26.600 even in the midst of very difficult situations. 00:05:27.140 --> 00:05:28.640 It's a time for reflection, 00:05:29.240 --> 00:05:30.360 a time for survey. 00:05:30.420 --> 00:05:32.660 As we see in the beginning of this chapter, 00:05:33.180 --> 00:05:35.480 it's about a significant year, 00:05:36.080 --> 00:05:39.340 in the year that King Uzziah died. 00:05:40.040 --> 00:05:42.160 And so there's a significance in that for us. 00:05:42.160 --> 00:05:43.580 It's a time of asking, 00:05:43.780 --> 00:05:45.660 how is their year going? 00:05:45.800 --> 00:05:47.860 How have their years gone? 00:05:48.260 --> 00:05:52.140 And what might lie ahead for them? 00:05:53.020 --> 00:05:54.980 And so as we look at Isaiah's survey 00:05:54.980 --> 00:05:56.500 of the situation here, 00:05:56.540 --> 00:05:59.280 we're going to see five things that he sees 00:05:59.280 --> 00:06:00.220 as he looks around, 00:06:00.980 --> 00:06:02.280 and as he looks at himself. 00:06:02.840 --> 00:06:04.760 We're going to see that there's an ache 00:06:04.760 --> 00:06:06.080 in his heart, 00:06:06.420 --> 00:06:07.480 and among the people. 00:06:07.560 --> 00:06:08.280 There's an ache. 00:06:08.279 --> 00:06:11.239 But we see then that there's an aura. 00:06:12.379 --> 00:06:14.279 There's a sense of seeing something significant 00:06:14.899 --> 00:06:16.459 in the midst of their ache. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:18.379 Then there's an awareness, 00:06:19.419 --> 00:06:21.239 an awareness of what is happening. 00:06:21.339 --> 00:06:22.459 Then there's an assurance 00:06:22.459 --> 00:06:26.119 of what their situation that they are in is about. 00:06:26.239 --> 00:06:27.439 And then we see finally, 00:06:27.879 --> 00:06:30.739 there's an availability from Isaiah. 00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:32.839 So there's five things that we're going to see 00:06:32.839 --> 00:06:34.759 together from this passage. 00:06:34.759 --> 00:06:37.759 And the first thing is an ache. 00:06:38.959 --> 00:06:40.680 There's an ache in his heart 00:06:40.680 --> 00:06:43.240 and the hearts of many of the people. 00:06:43.699 --> 00:06:45.759 And we see that in these opening words 00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:46.439 that tell us, 00:06:46.539 --> 00:06:48.980 in the year that King Uzziah died. 00:06:49.800 --> 00:06:51.719 What's the significance of this, 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:52.519 you might ask? 00:06:53.060 --> 00:06:55.339 Is there any significance in it? 00:06:55.399 --> 00:06:56.579 Well, it is significant. 00:06:57.379 --> 00:06:58.839 I say I record that 00:06:58.839 --> 00:07:00.759 because this is an important point 00:07:00.759 --> 00:07:02.000 in their history, 00:07:02.139 --> 00:07:03.180 in their lives. 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:06.600 in the year that King Uzziah died. 00:07:07.280 --> 00:07:09.160 So this is a point of reflecting 00:07:09.160 --> 00:07:11.060 this year that they are in, king's passing 00:07:28.720 --> 00:07:30.800 would not cause pain and grief. 00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:33.139 It would cause rejoicing 00:07:33.139 --> 00:07:35.360 when the king was not a good king. 00:07:36.040 --> 00:07:37.199 And there was often the case 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:38.699 where the king could be quite hard 00:07:38.699 --> 00:07:39.379 on the people 00:07:39.379 --> 00:07:41.560 and mistreat the people. 00:07:42.079 --> 00:07:43.879 But we find here that 00:07:43.879 --> 00:07:45.879 Uzziah had been a king 00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:47.040 who was a good king. 00:07:47.620 --> 00:07:48.780 And he had been a king 00:07:48.780 --> 00:07:49.980 for a very long time. 00:07:50.060 --> 00:07:50.699 He'd been a king 00:07:50.699 --> 00:07:52.740 for about 52 years. 00:07:53.600 Because we see here it leads to the next point, which is 00:26:23.079 --> 00:26:33.259 an assurance. An assurance. And that's what Isaiah is given here as well. Because he says, 00:26:33.359 --> 00:26:39.519 Woe is me, for I am lost. I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of 00:26:39.519 --> 00:26:47.439 unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. He has seen the glory of God. 00:26:47.440 --> 00:26:55.320 He has seen how lost he is in the midst of it. But then he is given an assurance. 00:26:56.740 --> 00:27:02.840 And what is the assurance that he's given? Well, the assurance that he has given is that as he draws 00:27:02.840 --> 00:27:10.500 near to God, God draws near to him. And that's the assurance that we can have this evening as well. 00:27:10.500 --> 00:27:19.299 That when we begin to realize and become aware of our lostness, our sin, and how we are destined to be 00:27:19.299 --> 00:27:28.339 lost for eternity in it, well, it leads us to see our only hope is through God and his word and a 00:27:28.339 --> 00:27:36.339 Savior who is Christ Jesus. And so the assurance that we come to see is that God will not turn us away, 00:27:36.339 --> 00:27:44.000 but that God is seeking after those who are lost. You see it in the Old Testament. You see it in the 00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:51.539 New Testament. And for example, Nehemiah chapter 1 verse 9 and 10, But if you return to me and keep my 00:27:51.539 --> 00:27:57.379 commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will 00:27:57.379 --> 00:28:02.859 gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen. So we can go so far away from God. 00:28:02.859 --> 00:28:12.619 We can be like that prodigal son who has just gone far away from his father, but God can still reach out. 00:28:14.419 --> 00:28:21.399 There's an awareness, and then we come to that assurance that God will not turn us away. 00:28:22.519 --> 00:28:26.919 Jesus tells us that in the Gospel of John chapter 6 verse 37, 00:28:26.920 --> 00:28:34.000 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 00:28:34.900 --> 00:28:40.580 There's great assurance in that. Where do we go with our lostness?
