phrase, know that saying, even though there's no validity to it whatsoever? 00:04:59.960 --> 00:05:05.080 To say that words can never hurt us is not only false, but it's unbiblical. 00:05:05.560 --> 00:05:07.560 It's not what we find in Scripture. 00:05:07.560 --> 00:05:24.319 And what is amazing, or I should actually probably say troubling to me, is the fact that we live in a day and age where verbal communication, that is this face-to-face communication, seems to be, at least to me, on a downward trend. 00:05:24.740 --> 00:05:28.540 Where people aren't communicating face-to-face as much anymore. 00:05:28.579 --> 00:05:29.759 We're still communicating. 00:05:30.040 --> 00:05:36.879 We're communicating over our phones, through social media, through text, through any different avenues malice communication, this communication that brings harm to one another, seems to be, at least from the perspective that I'm looking at, you may have a different perspective. 00:05:55.819 --> Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. 00:09:15.139 --> 00:09:19.740 Now there are a few things that I want us to understand when it comes to this passage this morning. 00:09:20.159 --> 00:09:26.500 And a few things that I want us to recognize and see when it comes to the importance of our words. 00:09:26.919 --> 00:09:35.159 And the first thing is this, that we should understand the importance and weightiness of teaching God's Word. 00:09:35.819 --> 00:09:41.139 That we understand the importance and weightiness of teaching God's Word. 00:09:41.139 --> 00:09:50.399 Now there are many passages in the book of James that we can look at and that we can see that will apply to our lives. 00:09:50.480 --> 00:09:52.720 In fact, that's one of the reasons that I love the book of James. 00:09:53.139 --> 00:09:59.000 It's because in James, James very clearly states many things that we should be giving our lives to. 00:09:59.319 --> 00:10:02.860 And he says very clearly things that we should not be giving our lives to. 00:10:03.159 --> 00:10:07.580 A lot of times there's not a lot of room for error in misunderstanding what James is saying. 00:10:07.620 --> 00:10:09.220 He says it very clearly. 00:10:09.220 --> 00:10:11.300 And that's one of the reasons that I love James. 00:10:11.399 --> 00:10:17.540 And so there's many things that each of us could look at this passage and see, well, that really applies to me. 00:10:17.940 --> 00:10:24.139 Well, this passage this week was one of those that really applied to me and caused me to think. 00:10:24.420 --> 00:10:28.360 Because these first two verses here in James 3, 1 and 2, it says, 00:10:28.360 --> 00:10:52.159 This is a passage that is incredibly relevant for us today. 00:10:52.159 --> 00:10:57.980 This is a passage that makes a lot of sense in the context that we are in today. 00:10:58.159 --> 00:11:04.919 But it's also a passage that at the time that it was written made a lot of sense to its readers as well. 00:11:05.399 --> 00:11:13.480 Douglas Moo, he points out several different characteristics that made this particular passage important in the life of the early church. 00:11:13.480 --> 00:11:22.019 Noting that Paul ranked the gift of teaching very high on the list of spiritual gifts that God bestows on the church. 00:11:22.480 --> 00:11:28.560 For the early church, Jewish Christians in the church that James would be writing to here, a lot of them, 00:11:28.560 --> 00:11:33.920 the role of the teacher would be very similar to a role that they understood. 00:11:34.200 --> 00:11:36.779 The role of the rabbi who is going to be teaching. 00:11:36.779 --> 00:11:42.199 And so they understood this and made that jump very easily to see the teacher in this role. 00:11:42.659 --> 00:11:44.500 It was a very prestigious role. 00:11:44.579 --> 00:11:50.779 A role that would require a certain level of education in a day and time when very few people could read. 00:11:51.740 --> 00:11:59.500 And they needed to be cautious about people aspiring to this role as a means of getting ahead in society. 00:11:59.639 --> 00:12:06.459 They needed to be very cautious that people would be trying to go into this field as a way of gaining prestige or power 00:12:06.460 --> 00:12:07.340 or authority. 00:12:08.220 --> 00:12:12.080 This, James is saying, should not be the case. 00:12:12.660 --> 00:12:17.440 You shouldn't view this role as a means of self-promotion. 00:12:18.259 --> 00:12:23.740 Many of you are reading right now the book, Love Your Church by Tony Morita. 00:12:23.879 --> 00:12:29.040 It's a book that many of our life groups are going through right now in some of our Sunday school classes. 00:12:29.220 --> 00:12:34.960 But this week in Love Your Church, Tony Morita, he talks about what it means to be a faithful leader. 00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:39.100 And he says, pastors are called to do their work willingly. 00:12:39.780 --> 00:12:43.680 They are called to live holy lives before God. 00:12:44.139 --> 00:12:50.300 He says, most of the pastoral qualifications are related to character and not skills. 00:12:50.300 --> 00:12:53.200 When you look at 1 Timothy chapter 3. 00:12:53.440 --> 00:12:58.600 He says, most of those qualifications for the pastor aren't related to their abilities, 00:12:58.600 --> 00:13:00.400 aren't related to the skills that they have, 00:13:00.399 --> 00:13:04.399 but they're actually far more intertwined with their character. 00:13:05.259 --> 00:13:09.039 They are called to be humble servant leaders, he says, like Jesus. 00:13:09.919 --> 00:13:15.399 To be sure, pastors aren't perfect, and they will have bad days and make mistakes, 00:13:15.699 --> 00:13:23.059 but the pursuit and pattern of a shepherd's life should be marked by happiness, holiness, and humility. 00:13:23.059 --> 00:13:30.799 In the book, Tony Morita goes on to give an illustration about a pastor that I have a lot of respect for. 00:13:31.479 --> 00:13:32.719 And his name is John Stott. 00:13:32.779 --> 00:13:34.759 He went to be with the Lord several years back. 00:13:34.799 --> 00:13:38.759 But John Stott was one of the greatest expositors of a generation. 00:13:39.359 --> 00:13:43.279 He was a pastor who was able to clearly communicate God's Word, 00:13:43.379 --> 00:13:49.059 but he was also a pastor who had a deep sense of humility when it comes to serving others. 00:13:49.059 --> 00:13:52.859 And in the book, he gives a great illustration, but there's another illustration, 00:13:53.439 --> 00:13:58.359 there's another story about John Stott's life that I want to bring our attention to this morning. 00:13:58.819 --> 00:14:04.699 You see, he would go around and do lots of conferences and work with aspiring young pastors 00:14:04.699 --> 00:14:07.639 and going around doing these teaching seminars. 00:14:07.839 --> 00:14:10.159 And one time he was asked, he says, 00:14:10.299 --> 00:14:14.339 what goes through your mind before you step on the stage to give a sermon? 00:14:14.479 --> 00:14:18.839 He says, what goes through your mind as you're walking up to the pulpit? 00:14:19.059 --> 00:14:21.659 And John Stott responded, he says, 00:14:21.739 --> 00:14:26.000 there's three steps that I walk up on my way to the pulpit. 00:14:26.359 --> 00:14:27.319 He says, there's three steps. 00:14:27.419 --> 00:14:31.819 On each step, I remind myself, he says, I believe in the Holy Spirit. 00:14:32.339 --> 00:14:34.259 I believe in the Holy Spirit. 00:14:34.659 --> 00:14:36.719 I believe in the Holy Spirit. 00:14:37.559 --> 00:14:45.259 And what Stott was communicating here is a deep sense of dependence on God to teach his Word. 00:14:45.259 --> 00:14:50.559 A deep sense of dependence on God to expound his Word. 00:14:51.000 --> 00:14:55.139 And then he was also asked, he says, well, what goes through your mind as you're leaving the stage, 00:14:55.179 --> 00:14:57.679 as you're walking off after you give a message? 00:14:58.100 --> 00:15:00.840 He says, what do you feel after a sermon? 00:15:01.319 --> 00:15:03.059 And this is what Stott responded. 00:15:03.200 --> 00:15:04.259 He said, ashamed. 00:15:06.039 --> 00:15:09.159 Ashamed that I couldn't do a better job. 00:15:09.159 --> 00:15:09.639 What? 00:15:09.639 --> 00:15:10.079 What? 00:15:11.579 --> 00:15:16.339 One of the greatest communicators, one of the greatest expositors of God's Word, 00:15:16.759 --> 00:15:19.159 at least that I've known about in this generation, 00:15:19.319 --> 00:15:25.500 is saying that what he felt as he left was this ashamed that he couldn't do a better job. 00:15:26.179 --> 00:15:32.279 And I can't tell you how challenging and comforting all at the same time this was for me this week, 00:15:32.279 --> 00:15:39.279 to think about one of the greatest expositors and the humility that he approached teaching God's Word. 00:15:39.939 --> 00:15:45.019 This deep sense of humility that I need God when it comes to teaching His Word. 00:15:45.139 --> 00:15:50.939 You see, James is not saying, do not follow God's call in your life to go to be a teacher of the Word, 00:15:51.039 --> 00:15:53.699 but rather he's saying, check your motives. 00:15:54.179 --> 00:15:57.779 Make sure you understand reason why you're going into this. 00:15:57.779 --> 00:16:02.139 As teachers, we have the ability to not only sin with our words, 00:16:02.220 --> 00:16:07.039 but we have the ability to lead others to sin with our words as well. 00:16:07.620 --> 00:16:11.100 There is a real need for pastors in the church today. 00:16:11.579 --> 00:16:18.179 For the last couple of years, the Georgia Baptist Convention has made a large emphasis on the need for pastors, 00:16:18.360 --> 00:16:20.779 the need for training up pastors in the church. 00:16:21.299 --> 00:16:24.620 They said there's a real shortage of pastors in the church. 00:16:24.620 --> 00:16:28.960 The average age of a senior pastor in the church is steadily increasing, 00:16:28.960 --> 00:16:35.060 while the number of young ministers, the young pastors coming into ministry is steadily declining. 00:16:35.700 --> 00:16:40.080 And they said it's not just a problem that we're going to see in years to come. 00:16:40.139 --> 00:16:42.179 It's a problem that we're seeing right now. 00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:48.440 So there is this need, there is a real sense of urgency to call people into pastoral ministry. 00:16:48.440 --> 00:16:54.780 So hear me when but to a child, a horse is huge. 00:18:24.019 --> 00:18:28.700 And so I can remember riding these horses around, and it was so amazing to me, 00:18:29.019 --> 00:18:35.319 me as a small child being able to lead and guide and direct this 1,200-pound animal that I'm riding. 00:18:35.799 --> 00:18:39.980 And I can remember one time in particular, I was riding this horse, and I asked the instructor, 00:18:40.079 --> 00:18:43.039 I said, can I take the horse through the mud over there? 00:18:43.400 --> 00:18:47.000 And she didn't know what I was talking about, and she said, sure, go ahead and do
