you're in for a great few years, all right, coming up. 00:00:27.740 --> 00:00:29.179 And I've shied away from Galatians. 00:00:29.179 --> 00:00:33.380 Galatians, but I'm quite excited about preaching is the key message of the church we need you to know? 00:01:01.620 --> 00:01:04.439 And that's Galatians, chapter 1, verses 1 to 5. 00:01:06.439 --> 00:01:10.300 Really, and we're going to look at the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:10.400 --> 00:01:11.420 That's what I need you to know. 00:01:12.420 --> 00:01:13.980 Galatians might be one of the earliest, 00:01:14.159 --> 00:01:16.040 well, it might be the earliest of the New Testament letters. 00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:19.720 It's a toss-up between Galatians and 1 Thessalonians. 00:01:20.520 --> 00:01:22.440 But most people think it is Galatians. 00:01:23.700 --> 00:01:25.380 It means it was written about 48 AD. 00:01:26.500 --> 00:01:31.560 It's only 15 years, 1-5, 15 years after the death of the Lord Jesus. 00:01:32.140 --> 00:01:32.960 It's not a lot of time. 00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:38.379 These are the first words we read of the Apostle Paul. 00:01:39.639 --> 00:01:41.579 Possibly the first words in the New Testament. 00:01:41.679 --> 00:01:42.479 They're exciting words. 00:01:43.859 --> 00:01:47.739 The first words written by New Testament believers. 00:01:49.439 --> 00:01:50.699 And I think that's really important. 00:01:50.919 --> 00:01:55.319 It's important because lots of the sceptics that are around today, 00:01:55.319 --> 00:02:01.539 and the kind of default that people think is that the Christian faith kind of evolved. 00:02:03.359 --> 00:02:04.479 Jesus was a nice guy. 00:02:04.579 --> 00:02:05.519 He did lots of good things. 00:02:05.639 --> 00:02:09.620 And then he's kind of evolved into what we believe about him today. 00:02:10.099 --> 00:02:12.599 Those who were there at the time, they didn't really think that. 00:02:12.680 --> 00:02:13.579 They admired him. 00:02:14.500 --> 00:02:19.639 But it's evolved into this kind of more complex son of God kind of stuff. 00:02:22.459 --> 00:02:24.759 The Christian faith, they would say, started really simply. 00:02:24.759 --> 00:02:26.459 And unsupernaturally. 00:02:27.060 --> 00:02:29.759 And gradually those doctrines kind of evolved. 00:02:30.599 --> 00:02:31.859 But that just isn't the case. 00:02:33.399 --> 00:02:36.099 The great truths which Christians believe, that we believe, 00:02:36.459 --> 00:02:37.299 are there right from the beginning. 00:02:37.399 --> 00:02:39.639 Just look at the first few verses of Galatians. 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:44.959 Verse 1, you have Jesus alongside the Father. 00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:50.879 You've got the resurrection in the first verse. 00:02:51.199 --> 00:02:54.199 God raised him from the dead, right from the off. 00:02:55.560 --> 00:02:57.079 You've got verses 3 to 5. 00:02:57.079 --> 00:03:01.139 The atoning death of Jesus Christ for our sins. 00:03:01.359 --> 00:03:05.879 So it's all there, right from the very first words of the New Testament. 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:09.719 Now I want to pass quickly over verses 1 and 2, 00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:14.680 where Paul states more clearly than anywhere else in the New Testament, 00:03:14.780 --> 00:03:16.939 his kind of divine right of apostleship. 00:03:16.939 --> 00:03:20.379 Verse 1, Paul, an apostle, a sent one, 00:03:21.900 --> 00:03:28.199 not from men, nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father, 00:03:28.259 --> 00:03:30.060 who raised him from the dead, 00:03:30.719 --> 00:03:32.859 and all the brothers who are with me. 00:03:32.860 --> 00:03:36.560 He emphasizes his apostleship there. 00:03:36.760 --> 00:03:39.560 It's something we're going to come back to again and again in Galatians. 00:03:40.480 --> 00:03:44.640 There are people in the church in Galatia who are trying to influence the church, 00:03:44.639 --> 00:03:48.359 and they're very anti the apostle Paul. 00:03:49.419 --> 00:03:51.899 And they're casting doubt on his apostleship. 00:03:53.059 --> 00:03:55.739 So can you see, right from the very first words of verse 1, 00:03:55.839 --> 00:03:58.219 Paul stresses, doesn't he, in very strong words, 00:03:58.359 --> 00:03:59.819 I am an apostle of Jesus Christ. 00:04:00.719 --> 00:04:02.419 I am an authoritative witness, 00:04:02.959 --> 00:04:06.459 and I am an authoritative spokesman of Jesus Christ. 00:04:06.560 --> 00:04:07.479 It's not from man. 00:04:08.439 --> 00:04:09.679 It's not by man. 00:04:09.879 --> 00:04:11.479 It's not something that I took upon myself. 00:04:11.599 --> 00:04:13.039 It's not something I applied to. 00:04:14.699 --> 00:04:16.819 It's not something anyone
