I'm trying to build a bed for a spare room. 00:00:37.380 --> 00:00:45.859 And if you've had an experience of anything like mine, here was the inner battle I faced every time I turned over a new page of instructions. 00:00:46.820 --> 00:00:52.659 In my mind I'm thinking to myself, reading the instructions, thinking to myself, do I really need another daul? 00:00:52.659 --> 00:00:56.779 You know what a daul is? You've got to learn the lingo with these Ikea flat packs, haven't you? 00:00:57.359 --> 00:01:05.060 Do I really need another daul? Does it really matter that the kind of size of screw that I need to put in that joint? 00:01:06.140 --> 00:01:12.579 There's got to be some kind of mistake here because the instructions don't quite 00:01:27.580 Ever had that experience? 00:01:29.300 --> 00:01:34.660 You see, what my friend meant, this person meant, when they called themselves an Ikea kind of Christian, 00:01:35.420 --> 00:01:40.939 was that they had seen the goodness in following the Creator's design. 00:01:40.939 --> 00:01:51.140 And as we take in this passage in 1 Timothy today, that is Paul's plea to this church in Ephesus, 00:01:51.579 --> 00:01:54.620 particularly as he thinks about men and women. 00:01:56.179 --> 00:01:58.539 How God has made them purposefully different, 00:01:59.280 --> 00:02:04.539 and how they are to wonderfully work together in the church. 00:02:04.540 --> 00:02:08.420 This is what this is talking about, in the church, not in the world, in the church. 00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:13.640 Now here's two things I think we need to be aware of as we come at a passage like this. 00:02:14.040 --> 00:02:19.200 Firstly, we need to be aware of the cultural waters in which we all swim, 00:02:19.819 --> 00:02:24.659 and how they have influenced how we automatically think about so much of this stuff. 00:02:24.719 --> 00:02:27.840 It's a bit like, if you were to ask a goldfish in a bowl, 00:02:27.840 --> 00:02:31.979 and you say, do you like the water in which you're swimming? 00:02:32.620 --> 00:02:35.259 And a goldfish would turn around to you if it was able to speak, 00:02:35.879 --> 00:02:37.379 and it would say, what's water? 00:02:38.640 --> 00:02:42.280 Because sometimes we get so used to, don't we, just the environment in which we live, 00:02:42.340 --> 00:02:47.599 that we don't even notice that we are growing up in a certain culture that thinks a certain way. 00:02:47.920 --> 00:02:50.879 So we need to be aware of the cultural waters in which we're swimming, 00:02:51.740 --> 00:02:56.620 and we need to be aware of the church waters in which we're swimming. 00:02:56.620 --> 00:03:02.520 And we should expect the timeless word of the eternal God 00:03:02.520 --> 00:03:07.719 to challenge our ever-changing culture in the way it thinks. 00:03:08.780 --> 00:03:11.200 We need to be aware of the church waters in which we swim, 00:03:11.560 --> some of us have grown up in church circles here, 00:03:25.500 --> 00:03:31.000 where I don't think I'm exaggerating too much to say this is probably all we talked about growing up. 00:03:32.039 --> 00:03:37.419 And so I think what that calls for is you bring our cultural waters in which we're swimming 00:03:37.419 --> 00:03:39.159 and the church waters in which we're swimming, 00:03:39.240 --> 00:03:41.080 if you bring them together, 00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:47.120 friends, what this means is that we come to this passage today with great humility. 00:03:47.120 --> 00:03:53.700 And we choose to put ourselves under God's word, not over it. 00:03:53.740 --> 00:03:57.360 In other words, we don't tell God's word what it should say. 00:03:57.740 --> 00:04:00.980 We listen and we respond appropriately. 00:04:01.740 --> 00:04:04.360 And we come at this with a great love for one another. 00:04:05.120 --> 00:04:07.939 If nothing else, this passage today, I hope, 00:04:08.939 --> was all about 00:04:35.480 --> 00:04:38.060 the church sharing God's heart 00:04:38.060 --> 00:04:40.060 that the peoples of the world 00:04:40.060 --> 00:04:41.180 would come to know Jesus. 00:04:41.180 --> 00:04:43.579 It's so closely tied to it. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:46.240 And I think how the peoples of the world 00:04:46.240 --> 00:04:49.660 are going to see us in action 00:04:49.660 --> 00:04:53.079 is a big factor in our witness to the world. 00:04:53.199 --> 00:04:55.120 So the world should be able to look in and see 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:59.060 a counter-cultural, Christ-like community 00:04:59.060 --> 00:05:03.120 of men and women together seeking to glorify God 00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:04.420 and enjoy him forever. 00:05:06.399 --> 00:05:33.500 And we get another little snippet here. 00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:34.580 Some of the false teaching 00:05:34.580 --> 00:05:36.340 that's doing the rounds in this church 00:05:36.339 --> 00:05:39.179 is that marriage is a thing to be avoided. 00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:40.139 You see it? 00:05:41.399 --> 00:05:43.599 Chapter 4, verses 3 to 5. 00:05:44.699 --> 00:05:45.899 Some people are saying marriage 00:05:45.899 --> 00:05:46.919 is a thing to be avoided. 00:05:47.060 --> 00:05:48.739 And you can imagine the spill-on effects 00:05:48.739 --> 00:05:49.560 of that kind of teaching. set themselves free 00:05:56.519 --> 00:06:00.359 from the old shackles of God's dusty old design 00:06:00.359 --> 00:06:01.379 for men and women. 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:03.399 And why would you subject yourself 00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:05.500 to limits on your life? 00:06:05.560 --> 00:06:07.079 What you can do, what you can be. 00:06:07.180 --> 00:06:08.500 Think about how you can flourish --> 00:06:27.560 Paul counters this, verse 4, chapter 4. 00:06:28.620 --> 00:06:30.779 He says, everything God created is good. 00:06:30.779 --> 00:06:31.279 Do you see that? 00:06:32.579 --> 00:06:35.199 Everything that God created is good. 00:06:36.819 --> 00:06:37.959 And so to this church 00:06:37.959 --> 00:06:39.479 who are maybe beginning to believe 00:06:39.479 --> 00:06:42.019 the false teaching, he says, 00:06:42.699 --> 00:06:46.500 get back to being Ikea kind of Christians 00:06:46.500 --> 00:06:47.359 and love it. 00:06:49.259 --> 00:06:50.119 And so what he does 00:06:50.119 --> 00:06:52.939 is he firstly turns to address 00:06:52.939 --> 00:06:54.739 the men in the church. 00:06:54.799 --> 00:06:56.059 And here's what he says, verse 8. 00:06:56.179 --> 00:06:57.239 Effectively he says, 00:06:57.240 --> 00:06:59.160 stop squabbling 00:06:59.160 --> 00:07:01.060 and start praying. 00:07:02.500 --> 00:07:03.139 It's interesting. 00:07:03.220 --> first hit Ephesus, 00:07:08.280 --> 00:07:09.300 the message of Jesus 00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:11.540 first hits this city, 00:07:12.040 --> 00:07:13.439 the men that you meet 00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:14.660 in the marketplace there 00:07:14.660 --> 00:07:15.960 who caused this rabble, 00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:17.720 what are they doing? 00:07:17.800 --> 00:07:19.060 The two things that they're doing 00:07:19.060 --> 00:07:19.840 in Ephesus, 00:07:20.680 --> 00:07:22.000 they're raising their voices 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:24.079 and they're being angry. 00:07:25.220 --> 00:07:25.360 Right?
