Well, according to the most recent figures, which have been published by 00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:32.200 Operation World in their book, the figures, and these are their statistics, are there are 546 million 00:00:32.200 --> 00:00:41.219 people. That's about 10% of the world's population are active disciples of Jesus Christ. It's staggering. 00:00:41.219 --> 00:00:52.299 The growth has been amazing. In China, over 10,000 people repent and turn to Christ every single day. 00:00:52.299 --> 00:01:05.859 In Kenya, almost 50% of the population are committed followers of Jesus. The highest rate of growth in the 00:01:05.859 --> 00:01:12.519 world today, not with the highest number, but the highest rate of growth is in Iran and Afghanistan, 00:01:12.519 --> 00:01:19.719 where persecution is at its worst. But it's not just other parts of the world. Ireland has also 00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:28.480 seen growth. 70,000 people, that's about 1% of the population, have turned to Jesus as their Lord 00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:40.299 and Saviour. It's incredible. Now, why is this? Well, it's all because of Jesus' promise to his disciples 00:01:40.299 --> 00:01:50.379 over 2,000 years ago. Listen to this promise. It's in verse 16. You did not choose me, but I chose you 00:01:50.379 --> 00:02:00.060 and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. That promise has been taking effect ever 00:02:00.060 --> 00:02:09.819 since, as disciples of Jesus around the world have taken his word seriously. 00:02:09.819 --> 00:02:17.819 Now in John's Gospel chapters 13 to 17, we have what commentators call the last discourse. 00:02:17.819 --> 00:02:26.060 It's the last few days of Jesus before his death, which he spends with his disciples. They chat, they have meals together. 00:02:26.060 --> 00:02:35.819 It's a very intimate and close time. It's just Jesus and his disciples. And throughout, Jesus is preparing his disciples 00:02:35.819 --> 00:02:47.819 for his going back to the Father. But as Jesus is going back to the Father, so he sends his people out. As Jesus leaves the world, 00:02:47.819 --> 00:02:57.500 the disciples begin to move out into the world. We see this at the very beginning and the end of this section. So in chapter 13, 00:02:57.500 --> 00:03:11.259 verse 20, Jesus says, I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me, and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me. 00:03:11.259 --> 00:03:22.939 And we see the same in chapter 17, verse 18. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 00:03:22.939 --> 00:03:32.699 So there's this movement taking place. Jesus going, Jesus leaving, but the disciples going and being sent. 00:03:32.699 --> 00:03:40.299 And in chapter 15, at the very centre of this conversation, Jesus makes it crystal clear. 00:03:40.299 --> 00:03:49.539 Chapter 15, verse 8. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. 00:03:50.379 --> 00:04:01.500 Jesus sends out his church to be fruitful. That people within our communities and all around the world would believe and trust in Christ. 00:04:01.500 --> 00:04:11.379 That's the fruit that Jesus is looking for. And that's the fruit that he has promised. People who will follow him. 00:04:12.819 --> 00:04:21.259 Now to help us understand what Jesus is saying, he uses three horticultural metaphors to explain it all. 00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:31.019 The first is the vine. In verse 1. I am the true vine. Jesus is the vine. That's the first metaphor. 00:04:31.019 --> 00:04:39.979 Then also in verse 1. We have the gardener. I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 00:04:40.740 --> 00:04:44.959 So Jesus the vine, the Father, the gardener. And then down at verse 5. 00:04:45.740 --> 00:04:53.199 I am the vine, says Jesus, and you are the branches. The church are the branches in the vine. 00:04:53.199 --> 00:05:01.680 Now we're going to look at these three metaphors and see how we can go and bear fruit. Fruit that will last. 00:05:02.959 --> 00:05:06.719 First then, the vine, which is all about expanding mission. 00:05:07.159 --> 00:05:12.639 Jesus identifies himself very clearly as being the vine. Look at verse 1. 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:17.659 I am the true vine. And verse 5. I am the vine. 00:05:18.379 --> 00:05:24.740 Now when we think of vine, don't think wine and all types of grapes. 00:05:25.419 --> 00:05:26.659 Think mission. 00:05:27.979 --> 00:05:29.939 Vine equals mission. 00:05:31.539 --> 00:05:35.219 To see this, have a look back at Isaiah chapter 5. 00:05:35.220 --> 00:05:41.920 Isaiah chapter 5, starting at verse 1. 00:05:43.860 --> 00:05:47.200 This is a picture of a vineyard. 00:05:47.360 --> 00:05:51.820 I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard. 00:05:52.860 --> 00:05:55.920 My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside. 00:05:56.740 --> 00:06:03.060 He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest of vines. 00:06:03.060 --> 00:06:05.379 Well, who is this vine? 00:06:05.800 --> 00:06:08.040 Well, we're told down at verse 7. 00:06:08.680 --> 00:06:15.420 The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the house of Israel and the people of Judah. 00:06:16.699 --> 00:06:18.879 So the vineyard is God's people. 00:06:19.660 --> 00:06:21.079 And what's the purpose of this vine? 00:06:21.160 --> 00:06:23.840 Well, go back up to the rest of verse 2. 00:06:24.699 --> 00:06:27.579 He built a watchtower around it. 00:06:27.959 --> 00:06:29.920 Cut out a winepress as well. 00:06:29.920 --> 00:06:33.840 Then he looked for a good crop of grapes. 00:06:34.819 --> 00:06:37.480 But it yielded only bad fruit. 00:06:38.860 --> 00:06:43.400 God had rescued Israel from Egypt, from their slavery. 00:06:44.600 --> 00:06:46.180 He had taken them out of there. 00:06:46.480 --> 00:06:51.920 And now he had 00:08:56.060 And verse 6. 00:08:57.039 --> 00:09:01.720 In days to come, Jacob, that's the people of Israel, will take root. 00:09:02.600 --> 00:09:11.000 Israel, my people, will bud and blossom and fill all the world with fruit. 00:09:11.000 --> 00:09:22.220 It's a wonderful picture of this vineyard spreading out its branches into all the world so that it bears fruit. 00:09:23.799 --> 00:09:27.799 Now that promise became a reality with the coming of Jesus. 00:09:27.799 --> 00:09:38.019 Jesus said, I am the true vine. 00:09:38.859 --> 00:09:45.099 Jesus came as the true vine sent by God and planted in the world. 00:09:45.100 --> 00:09:50.480 He came to replace or fulfil what Israel were meant to be. 00:09:52.060 --> 00:09:57.279 Now when we say Jesus has replaced Israel, it's not 00:10:25.740 Jesus came to die for us. 00:10:25.740 --> 00:10:35.240 And through his death, the way is now open for people from every race and every culture and every background, whoever they are, 00:10:44.740 --> 00:10:50.440 So Jesus comes as the true vine planted in the world, 00:10:50.860 --> 00:10:56.080 welcoming all who will come to him to find the new and eternal life. 00:10:56.840 --> 00:11:06.220 Jesus as the true vine comes into the world and he expands the mission of God out to the world and to the nations. 00:11:08.680 --> 00:11:12.139 So that is the true vine, the first metaphor. 00:11:12.139 --> 00:11:18.699 The second metaphor is of the gardener working among the vine. 00:11:19.580 --> 00:11:26.179 We can picture the gardener coming along, walking down through the 00:14:15.799 And they all thought he was a true disciple. 00:14:16.319 --> 00:14:19.019 But God knew his true heart. 00:14:19.019 --> 00:14:25.500 It was like he was cut away from the vine.
