Your problem is there or your problem is there. 00:02:12.699 --> 00:02:17.419 Your presenting symptom shows a deeper problem. 00:02:18.919 --> 00:02:20.340 The problem is really here. 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:24.780 And I think when we come to God, we can often be like that. 00:02:25.800 --> 00:02:30.439 When we come to God, you might think you know exactly what you need this morning. 00:02:31.699 --> 00:02:36.120 But when we put ourselves into the hands of God, we discover there is something different. 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:37.099 There is something deeper. 00:02:38.280 --> 00:02:40.400 There is something far more radical that God intends. 00:02:42.659 --> 00:02:46.640 And when he implies in this verse, the Apostle Paul, when he writes about the need for redemption, 00:02:46.639 --> 00:02:53.559 that the deepest need of your heart and my heart is tied to this little word that is often used, sins. 00:02:53.959 --> 00:02:55.479 It's the word transgressions in the verse. 00:02:56.619 --> 00:02:57.919 In him we have redemption. 00:02:59.299 --> 00:03:04.019 Through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, the forgiveness of our transgressions. 00:03:05.879 --> 00:03:08.119 The word transgression is rebellion. 00:03:09.979 --> 00:03:14.000 It is deliberately breaking God's law. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:19.319 It is a do not touch the wet paint and putting your hands on the wet paint. 00:03:19.639 --> 00:03:24.060 Do not step on the grass deliberately, consciously going onto the grass. 00:03:26.139 --> 00:03:29.259 Transgression is deliberate breaking of God's law. 00:03:30.180 --> 00:03:34.900 It is going over the border of what God says is acceptable and unacceptable, 00:03:35.159 --> 00:03:37.060 of what is legitimate and illegitimate. 00:03:37.439 --> 00:03:40.960 It speaks of our disobedience to God's will and to God's law. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:46.060 And so this redemption produces two things. 00:03:46.140 --> 00:03:46.580 Can you see it? 00:03:46.599 --> 00:03:48.980 The Apostle speaks, doesn't he, of forgiveness. 00:03:51.620 --> 00:03:55.520 That's the thing that we're probably most familiar with this morning if we've been in church. 00:03:56.300 --> 00:04:00.600 That when someone transgresses God's law, trespasses God's will and commandments, 00:04:00.980 --> 00:04:05.600 they are guilty in the eyes of God of transgression, of rebellion. 00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:12.240 They bear, in relation to God, a burden of guilt. 00:04:14.340 --> 00:04:15.819 Sometimes we feel that. 00:04:16.959 --> 00:04:17.759 Sometimes we don't. 00:04:19.839 --> 00:04:24.399 Often, most often, people are not burdened by guilt. 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:31.139 And so guilt is not so much something that you feel, but something that you have, something that you bear. 00:04:31.139 --> 00:04:37.339 When you disobey God's law, when you trespass his commandment, when you trespass his will, 00:04:38.399 --> 00:04:40.159 you are guilty. 00:04:40.819 --> 00:04:41.899 I am guilty. 00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:44.579 In the sight and presence of God. 00:04:46.019 --> 00:04:49.300 There are lots of people in London today, lots of my friends, they have no sense of guilt. 00:04:51.120 --> 00:04:52.620 That doesn't mean they're not guilty. 00:04:53.939 --> 00:04:55.500 It doesn't mean that they're not sinners. 00:04:56.919 --> 00:04:59.680 It does not mean that they do not need forgiveness. 00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:03.780 It's simply that they're unaware of their burden of guilt. 00:05:05.920 --> 00:05:11.360 They think, maybe you think, that your greatest need is something different. 00:05:12.639 --> 00:05:13.439 Maybe it's happiness. 00:05:13.720 --> 00:05:14.420 Maybe it's relationship. 00:05:14.600 --> 00:05:15.400 Maybe it's prosperity. 00:05:16.019 --> 00:05:16.180 Money. 00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:22.000 But here the apostle is diagnosing your greatest problem and mine. 00:05:23.139 --> 00:05:25.180 The deepest need of the human heart. 00:05:25.180 --> 00:05:31.800 For which the greatest blessing of the Christian faith is the answer. 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:34.019 And that is forgiveness. 00:05:37.360 --> 00:05:38.060 From God. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:39.079 Forgiveness from God. 00:05:39.079 --> 00:05:43.180 You might not have realised that. 00:05:44.060 --> 00:05:45.919 I've come into church this morning unaware of that. 00:05:46.039 --> 00:05:48.079 That your greatest need is for forgiveness. 00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:52.079 And Paul says that in Jesus Christ, 00:05:53.039 --> 00:05:54.779 in the good news, in the gospel, 00:05:54.959 --> 00:05:58.779 not only do we have forgiveness because we bear the burden of our guilt, 00:05:58.779 --> 00:06:01.159 and one day that will be apparent to us. 00:06:03.159 --> 00:06:06.979 One day we will hear the judgment of God on your life and on my life. 00:06:08.139 --> 00:06:09.979 We will hear guilty before God. 00:06:11.359 --> 00:06:13.759 And we'll have no plea. 00:06:14.859 --> 00:06:16.379 We'll have no excuse to make. 00:06:16.379 --> 00:06:20.939 But there's another factor in this kind of need of redemption. 00:06:21.139 --> 00:06:23.899 And it's not just the need of the burden of our guilt being lifted 00:06:23.899 --> 00:06:27.159 by the proclamation of God's forgiveness in Christ. 00:06:27.420 --> 00:06:31.540 The other need is that we are not only guilty as sinners, 00:06:31.719 --> 00:06:33.579 but we are slaves to sin. 00:06:35.219 --> 00:06:36.500 We're slaves of sin. 00:06:38.740 --> 00:06:42.000 That's what the word kind of redemption contains, doesn't it? 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:44.300 It's got this picture within it of slavery. 00:06:45.959 --> 00:06:49.720 Of being slaves to the very thing that's made us guilty. 00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:53.540 And that's contained within this whole thought, 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:55.000 this whole concept of redemption. 00:06:57.139 --> 00:07:00.339 The whole idea of redemption, it's a Bible word in many ways. 00:07:00.819 --> 00:07:04.000 It's pictured for us in the Bible supremely by the people of Israel 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:07.680 that were slaves in Egypt, hundreds of years after Joseph. 00:07:09.220 --> 00:07:11.699 And throughout the whole of the Bible, 00:07:11.699 --> 00:07:15.979 that is the picture of human beings enslaved. 00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:20.779 It's the picture of life without Jesus Christ, 00:07:20.899 --> 00:07:23.939 of being enslaved to the sin that we're guilty of. 00:07:26.060 --> 00:07:28.500 You might have believed the delusion that human beings, 00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:30.439 we are free. 00:07:32.000 --> 00:07:33.719 You might think, no, no, no, no. 00:07:33.860 --> 00:07:34.740 We are free. 00:07:34.899 --> 00:07:35.539 I am free. 00:07:35.620 --> 00:07:39.399 I am free to choose whatever I want. 00:07:39.399 --> 00:07:44.000 And yet, whenever we're willing to look at humanity 00:07:44.000 --> 00:07:45.439 and to look at our lives, 00:07:45.599 --> 00:07:48.639 we will discover our humanity and we are in chains, 00:07:49.099 --> 00:07:50.620 in bondage, 00:07:51.899 --> 00:07:53.659 a slave to our sin. 00:07:55.039 --> 00:07:56.419 You'll know that in your experience. 00:07:56.420 --> 00:08:00.620 We discover that far from being able to change, 00:08:01.020 --> 00:08:03.759 our pattern of life is we are in bondage. 00:08:05.699 --> 00:08:07.100 Here's a man who's got furious temper. 00:08:08.740 --> 00:08:10.280 Furious temper that gets out of control. 00:08:10.500 --> 00:08:12.439 He sees the damage that it causes. 00:08:13.700 --> 00:08:16.360 He sees the heartbreak it brings to other people. 00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:17.780 And he recognises that. 00:08:17.840 --> 00:08:18.720 And so he says to himself, 00:08:18.920 --> 00:08:19.819 I will change. 00:08:20.100 --> 00:08:21.300 And for a time he can. 00:08:21.600 --> 00:08:22.860 But what's the real story? 00:08:24.500 --> 00:08:26.620 The real story is that ultimately, 00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:28.800 he finds that the chains of his temper 00:08:28.800 --> 00:08:30.740 still bind him. 00:08:32.340 --> 00:08:33.659 And so every so often, 00:08:33.759 --> 00:08:34.919 maybe a little bit more rarely, 00:08:35.039 --> 00:08:36.000 but every so often, 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:37.180 it breaks out again. 00:08:37.279 --> 00:08:39.700 Or it shows itself in other forms. 00:08:41.399 --> 00:08:42.639 Well, we can apply that to every sin. 00:08:42.639 --> 00:08:45.779 That we are in bondage to. 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:48.860 And that is why we need redemption. 00:08:51.340 --> 00:08:53.460 We do not just need forgiveness. 00:08:56.860 --> 00:08:59.159 We are like someone when they've committed some crime 00:08:59.159 --> 00:09:00.080 against the law of the land. 00:09:00.259 --> 00:09:04.199 They're not only declared by the judge to be guilty, 00:09:04.439 --> 00:09:05.620 but we're locked up. 00:09:06.439 --> 00:09:07.480 We're put inside. 00:09:09.100 --> 00:09:11.299 And it's no good going to that prisoner 00:09:11.299 --> 00:09:13.139 when they're locked up inside 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:13.939 and saying, 00:09:14.039 --> 00:09:15.279 I've got good news from you. 00:09:15.459 --> 00:09:17.000 You've been delivered from your guilt. 00:09:18.419 --> 00:09:19.879 You've been delivered from your guilt. 00:09:19.879 --> 00:09:21.539 Your guilt has been removed. 00:09:22.679 --> 00:09:23.979 What would the prisoner say? 00:09:25.279 --> 00:09:26.259 The prisoner would say, 00:09:26.500 --> 00:09:27.059 I want to be free. 00:09:28.500 --> 00:09:29.639 I want to be set loose. 00:09:30.819 --> 00:09:32.000 I want to be released. 00:09:34.839 --> 00:09:36.579 And there's a spiritual parallel for that, 00:09:36.659 --> 00:09:37.240 obviously, isn't there? 00:09:38.459 --> 00:09:39.039 And so number one, 00:09:39.079 --> 00:09:40.019 the need of redemption. 00:09:40.279 --> 00:09:40.659 Number two, 00:09:41.299 --> 00:09:43.219 the nature of redemption. 00:09:45.139 --> 00:09:47.159 The word simply means 00:09:47.159 --> 00:09:48.719 being set free 00:09:48.719 --> 00:09:50.799 by the paying of a price. 00:09:51.899 --> 00:09:53.939 Being set free by the paying of a price. 00:09:54.000 --> 00:09:54.699 Let me explain it to you. 00:09:54.939 --> 00:09:56.879 Its background is in the ancient world 00:09:56.879 --> 00:09:57.620 as well as in the Bible. 00:09:58.679 --> 00:10:00.259 And so when two countries go to war, 00:10:00.339 --> 00:10:01.679 when two armies go to war 00:10:01.679 --> 00:10:04.539 and one army is victorious over the other army, 00:10:04.620 --> 00:10:05.939 they conquer the other army, 00:10:06.759 --> 00:10:09.259 they would take some of the best of the soldiers. 00:10:09.259 --> 00:10:12.399 They would take some of the cream of the conquered army. 00:10:13.279 --> 00:10:14.659 And the defeated army, 00:10:14.860 --> 00:10:16.360 the best of the defeated army, 00:10:16.399 --> 00:10:17.200 would be taken away. 00:10:18.259 --> 00:10:20.879 And they would be made slaves in a foreign land. 00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:23.539 And then what would happen was 00:10:23.539 --> 00:10:24.620 there would be negotiations 00:10:24.620 --> 00:10:27.980 between the defeated party and the victors. 00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:31.480 And the defeated party might agree 00:10:31.480 --> 00:10:33.379 to buy back some of those 00:10:33.379 --> 00:10:34.559 who'd been taken into slavery 00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:36.080 in this foreign land. 00:10:36.379 --> 00:10:38.600 It mattered greatly to the people of their country. 00:10:38.600 --> 00:10:42.600 Those soldiers that had been taken captive, 00:10:42.740 --> 00:10:44.019 they were valuable. 00:10:44.680 --> 00:10:46.399 And so a ransom price is agreed. 00:10:47.639 --> 00:10:49.159 And that ransom price is paid. the great picture is 00:10:57.940 --> 00:11:00.740 that picture of Israel in Egypt. 00:11:01.580 --> 00:11:03.740 Of God's redemption of a people 00:11:03.740 --> 00:11:04.720 in the land of Egypt. 00:11:04.899 --> 00:11:05.379 The Exodus. 00:11:05.379 --> 00:11:08.220 And the people at the start of Exodus, 00:11:08.460 --> 00:11:09.939 just hundreds of years after Joseph, 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:11.860 they are in bondage to Pharaoh. 00:11:13.139 --> 00:11:14.460 They are in a situation, aren't they, 00:11:14.659 --> 00:11:16.240 of utter helplessness. 00:11:17.779 --> 00:11:19.580 And they cry out to God 00:11:19.580 --> 00:11:21.059 and God comes down. 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:24.279 And clearly only God can do it. 00:11:25.879 --> 00:11:26.580 God comes down 00:11:26.580 --> 00:11:28.279 and releases 00:11:28.279 --> 00:11:29.919 the people of Israel. 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:30.559 He says, 00:11:30.700 --> 00:11:31.620 I am the Lord your God 00:11:31.620 --> 00:11:33.419 who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 00:11:33.419 --> 00:11:35.079 They couldn't save themselves. 00:11:36.719 --> 00:11:38.919 God puts out his strong arm 00:11:38.919 --> 00:11:40.159 and his mighty hand 00:11:40.159 --> 00:11:42.479 and it is costly to God 00:11:42.479 --> 00:11:43.259 to redeem them. 00:11:44.979 --> 00:11:46.039 There's a lamb, 00:11:46.179 --> 00:11:47.039 a perfect lamb, 00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:48.000 a spotless lamb 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:49.479 who was slain 00:11:49.479 --> 00:11:51.419 and he is the ransom price 00:11:51.419 --> 00:11:52.539 to which his people were delivered. 00:11:54.719 --> 00:11:55.899 And God sets a pattern, 00:11:56.039 --> 00:11:56.639 doesn't he, in Exodus? 00:11:57.699 --> 00:11:59.099 A pattern from which 00:11:59.099 --> 00:11:59.980 his people have learned 00:11:59.980 --> 00:12:00.939 all through the ages 00:12:00.939 --> 00:12:03.000 that he was the redeemer. 00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:05.479 You cannot save yourself. 00:12:05.699 --> 00:12:06.779 You cannot redeem yourself. 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:07.500 That's what it says. 00:12:08.819 --> 00:12:09.620 But that God 00:12:09.620 --> 00:12:10.539 delivered his people 00:12:10.539 --> 00:12:11.759 at a ransom price. 00:12:13.620 --> 00:12:14.419 The Apostle Peter says 00:12:14.419 --> 00:12:15.679 to the church there, 00:12:15.740 --> 00:12:16.019 he says, 00:12:16.259 --> 00:12:17.579 you have been redeemed 00:12:17.579 --> 00:12:20.219 and not with ordinary wealth, 00:12:20.319 --> 00:12:21.500 not with silver and gold, 00:12:21.500 --> 00:12:24.439 but by the precious blood 00:12:24.439 --> 00:12:26.419 of Jesus Christ. 00:12:26.419 --> 00:12:29.959 a lamb without blemish 00:12:29.959 --> 00:12:30.659 and without spot. 00:12:31.879 --> 00:12:33.379 And that is the nature 00:12:33.379 --> 00:12:34.120 of redemption. 00:12:34.319 --> 00:12:35.000 It is deliverance. 00:12:35.079 --> 00:12:35.679 It is freedom. 00:12:36.919 --> --> 00:12:41.159 and verse 7. 00:12:41.479 --> 00:12:42.639 In him we have redemption 00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:43.799 through his blood, 00:12:43.979 --> 00:12:44.939 the forgiveness of sins. 00:12:44.940 --> 00:12:47.820 But redemption 00:12:47.820 --> 00:12:49.020 is more than forgiveness. 00:12:50.600 --> 00:12:51.620 The two 00:12:51.620 --> 00:12:53.440 are not completely matching.
