00:06:11.079 --> 00:06:13.279 The first is, what is the posture of paradise? 00:06:13.719 --> 00:06:15.919 If you're going to be there, what do you got to be like? 00:06:16.659 --> 00:06:21.639 What's the proper understanding of greatest, and what's the purpose of it all? 00:06:22.539 --> 00:06:24.819 First, what's the posture of paradise? 00:06:25.519 --> 00:06:27.479 In verses 24 through 26, 00:06:27.480 --> 00:06:51.300 So Jesus, remember, we heard last week, he's just finished the Passover meal, 00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:54.220 and in another account, he's just washed the disciples' feet. 00:06:54.220 --> 00:06:57.820 He's saying his temporary goodbyes to his beloved disciples. 00:06:58.960 --> 00:07:03.520 And remember, he just told them that one of them would betray him, and they started arguing about him. 00:07:04.300 --> 00:07:07.240 But as the dispute arose, it led to a quarrel. 00:07:08.380 --> 00:07:15.180 And this shouldn't surprise us, because I can't confirm what Jesus felt, but I bet it didn't feel good, 00:07:15.280 --> 00:07:16.540 but he had seen this before. 00:07:17.660 --> 00:07:18.780 Okay, it shouldn't surprise us. 00:07:19.260 --> 00:07:23.460 Imagine here, all the people that he spent the past years of his life with, 00:07:23.459 --> 00:07:26.120 he's about to give his life for them, he's washed their feet, 00:07:26.419 --> 00:07:29.399 and they're bickering about who's going to be the greatest in heaven. 00:07:30.579 --> 00:07:35.399 Now, in the Greco-Roman society where they were banquets, okay, 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:39.219 they were all about places of honor, where you sat at the table. 00:07:39.959 --> 00:07:41.859 Your seat at the table, right? 00:07:43.019 --> 00:07:45.159 Closer to the front kind of mentality. 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:46.379 Closer to the speaker. 00:07:46.379 --> 00:07:51.279 And little did the disciples realize that this, where they were sitting, 00:07:51.459 --> 00:07:53.879 is actually the most important seat of their lives. 00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:56.920 Okay, because they're seated next to the king of all kings. 00:07:57.259 --> 00:07:58.699 They're bickering about who's the greatest. 00:07:59.480 --> 00:08:00.860 But they wanted more, right? 00:08:01.779 --> 00:08:02.639 Just like we would. 00:08:02.699 --> 00:08:04.439 And I don't think it would have surprised Jesus, 00:08:04.600 --> 00:08:08.060 because, like I said, it's a discussion that they had had before. 00:08:08.159 --> 00:08:09.740 Let's look at Luke chapter 9. 00:08:09.740 --> 00:08:37.500 So, after that, in Luke 18, the disciples again say, 00:08:37.500 --> 00:08:39.100 keep the children away from Jesus. 00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:40.299 And he says, no, no, no, no. 00:08:40.360 --> 00:08:41.720 Let the children come to me. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:44.539 For to such belongs the kingdom of God. 00:08:44.639 --> 00:08:47.559 So, this is a very common theme with the disciples. 00:08:47.720 --> 00:08:48.299 Who's the greatest? 00:08:49.360 --> 00:08:50.940 So, how does Jesus respond? 00:08:52.159 --> 00:08:53.600 Well, if you look at verse 25, 00:08:55.340 --> 00:08:57.419 he says right there, 00:08:58.220 --> 00:09:00.639 the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, 00:09:00.679 --> 00:09:02.960 and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:03.860 What does he mean by that? 00:09:03.860 --> 00:09:07.480 Well, he's comparing the disciples' attitudes to that of the Gentile kings. 00:09:08.039 --> 00:09:08.159 Okay? 00:09:08.700 --> 00:09:11.460 And in the society there, they were called benefactors. 00:09:11.539 --> 00:09:12.659 Those were the people that gave. 00:09:12.779 --> 00:09:13.879 And they gave to get. 00:09:14.100 --> 00:09:16.360 So, if you ruled, you typically had money. 00:09:16.879 --> 00:09:18.480 And you got the places of honor. 00:09:18.600 --> 00:09:21.120 And you gave money to get those places of honor. 00:09:21.419 --> 00:09:22.860 That's how you got to where you were. 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:25.080 And that authority was typically abused 00:09:25.080 --> 00:09:29.279 and lorded over all of the people that were in these cities. 00:09:29.940 --> 00:09:32.080 And it was only the wealthy who got these spots. 00:09:32.080 --> 00:09:34.759 And they got incentives in return for their benevolence. 00:09:35.500 --> 00:09:35.659 Okay? 00:09:35.740 --> 00:09:38.299 So, Jesus is basically saying, 00:09:38.399 --> 00:09:39.080 you're being like them, 00:09:39.139 --> 00:09:41.399 but not so with the kingdom of heaven. 00:09:41.500 --> 00:09:43.120 See, that's not the posture of paradise. 00:09:43.860 --> 00:09:45.299 So, he continues his response 00:09:45.299 --> 00:09:47.799 by illustrating the true posture of paradise. 00:09:47.799 --> 00:09:50.059 By bringing in the example of children. 00:09:50.620 --> 00:09:52.799 And this time, he adds the example of servants. 00:09:53.740 --> 00:09:54.740 And we think of servants. 00:09:54.879 --> 00:09:57.079 Think in this instance of waitstaff. 00:09:57.519 --> 00:09:59.299 But think of those that are serving those 00:09:59.299 --> 00:10:00.439 in the places of honor. 00:10:00.939 --> 00:10:01.179 Okay? 00:10:01.179 --> 00:10:03.839 And those who follow King Jesus 00:10:03.839 --> 00:10:07.099 should learn from children and servants. 00:10:07.199 --> 00:10:08.699 Children, you're so important. 00:10:08.779 --> 00:10:09.199 You hear that? 00:10:09.439 --> 00:10:11.479 Jesus says that we got to learn from you. 00:10:12.699 --> sons and daughters of God, 00:11:45.200 --> 00:11:47.139 which makes us kids of the King. 00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:49.920 Yahweh is then our Father who art in heaven. 00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:51.719 Jesus is our King and our brother 00:11:51.719 --> 00:11:53.679 and our defender and our mediator, 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:56.039 our Lord of Lords and our Messiah. 00:11:56.679 --> 00:11:58.000 He's also our brother, right? 00:11:59.339 --> 00:12:01.839 And His Holy Spirit then empowers us 00:12:01.839 --> 00:12:04.399 to live with the posture of paradise, 00:12:04.899 --> 00:12:05.360 dependence, 00:12:06.079 --> 00:12:06.559 humility, 00:12:07.120 --> 00:12:10.219 which is otherworldly in the world that we live in today. 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:12.399 Where we lay our lives down 00:12:12.399
