times as we go through the passage to help connect back to that. 00:01:25.719 --> 00:01:33.200 But before we start, I just want to point out a couple things so that we don't get the wrong idea about what's being said. 00:01:34.340 --> 00:01:38.620 When I say righteous living, I'm not talking about perfection living. 00:01:40.219 --> 00:01:43.579 Righteous living isn't accomplished in our strength alone. 00:01:43.579 --> 00:01:50.459 True righteousness is from God, so we need His help as we are responsible for working that out. 00:01:51.459 --> 00:01:56.679 So we set aside our sinful desires 00:05:01.359 --> 00:05:04.879 It's the best fan because it does what it's supposed to do. 00:05:05.819 --> 00:05:20.059 So tonight as we're going to look at a few verses that hopefully will help us see that our right life comes as a result of our righteously living before God. 00:05:20.060 --> 00:05:25.899 So let's open up our passage, Proverbs chapter 16. 00:05:30.399 --> 00:05:35.379 We're going to be looking at the last three verses, verses 31, 32, and 33. 00:05:37.160 --> 00:05:40.180 And then the first six verses of chapter 17. 00:05:40.180 --> 00:05:44.240 Verse 31. 00:06:10.180 --> 00:06:40.180 00:06:40.180 --> 00:06:45.019 Verse 31 says, 00:06:45.139 --> 00:06:58.579 There are many signs of old age, some of which we may not be looking forward to. 00:06:58.579 --> 00:07:08.379 Hair changes, body changes, strength, health, maybe even mental issues change as we get older. 00:07:09.219 --> 00:07:12.819 We know that gray hair, white hair is not the only sign of old age. 00:07:12.899 --> 00:07:18.799 However, this verse is using gray hair as a picture to represent old age. 00:07:19.459 --> 00:07:22.639 Instead of listing everything, it lists gray hair. 00:07:22.919 --> 00:07:24.699 It's an outward sign of age. 00:07:24.699 --> 00:07:28.139 Proverbs 20, 29 says this. 00:07:28.659 --> 00:07:34.000 The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair. 00:07:35.300 --> 00:07:42.699 The strength that it is talking about of young men is referring to all the aspects of their younger body, right? 00:07:42.860 --> 00:07:49.399 Their strength, their endurance, their flexibility, resilience, their muscle tone and shape. 00:07:49.399 --> 00:07:58.120 All those things that a young person takes pride in, they are concrete signs of youthfulness. 00:07:59.120 --> 00:08:03.060 So on the other end of that, right, there are signs of old age. 00:08:03.560 --> 00:08:05.699 Gray hair is one of those signs. 00:08:05.699 --> 00:08:13.879 But for the person getting old, those signs are not meant to be a sign of weakness. 00:08:16.620 --> 00:08:24.419 Those younger should not look at the older and disregard them, look down on them, or look for someone newer or stronger. 00:08:25.259 --> 00:08:30.099 Because throughout the Bible, what we see is age is honored and respected. 00:08:31.599 --> 00:08:33.659 Leviticus 19, 32 says this. 00:08:33.659 --> 00:08:42.939 You shall stand up before the gray head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God, I am the Lord. 00:08:43.179 --> 00:08:44.079 That's pretty strong. 00:08:44.719 --> 00:08:50.939 Several other verses that talk in the same way because we are commanded to honor and respect older men and women. 00:08:50.940 --> 00:09:04.120 So gray hair, other physical changes brought about by age are meant to be outward signs of true maturity. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:09.880 Like this verse says, the gray head should be a crown of glory. 00:09:11.460 --> 00:09:18.520 Age should bring with it not only experience, but wisdom and righteousness and Christ-likeness. 00:09:18.519 --> 00:09:22.460 Those are godly characteristics that this verse is talking about. 00:09:25.419 --> 00:09:31.220 The second half of this verse says that it is gained in a righteous life. 00:09:32.120 --> 00:09:40.539 Now we know that not all older men and women are righteous, but there's a lot of people with gray or white hair or signs of aging. 00:09:41.439 --> 00:09:44.460 Solomon is not speaking towards the unrighteous here. 00:09:44.460 --> 00:09:53.660 He's saying that for those with wisdom who have sought to live righteously, then they are outward signs of age. 00:09:53.780 --> 00:09:57.820 Like gray hair becoming a crown, something to be proud of. 00:09:57.920 --> 00:09:59.700 It's a sign of honor or achievement. 00:10:01.160 --> 00:10:06.700 But those signs are meaningless if the life doesn't back it up. 00:10:06.700 --> 00:10:20.000 If there's a life that was lived outside of God and for oneself, then that reminder of old age should be in a way a sign of shame. 00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:24.580 A sign of wanting to live competitions for all the schools in the area. 00:10:49.019 --> 00:10:52.539 So South Jersey and maybe some of Maryland, some of Delaware. 00:10:53.779 --> 00:10:59.360 Any Christian schools in that area would come together and they would have competitions for most of the subjects in school. 00:10:59.600 --> 00:11:03.519 So, you know, the spelling bees and the history competitions. 00:11:03.860 righteously. 00:12:30.220 --> 00:12:49.700 So for you, for those out there who may have gray hair or thinning hair, or if you do in the future, if your body slows down because of old age, 00:12:51.139 00:15:17.200 There's planning and military power that is needed to capture a city. 00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:31.280 However, Solomon is saying it is of greater importance to your life now and for eternity for you to have and practice self-control. 00:15:32.740 --> 00:15:44.800 We can look back into history and name examples of people who were strong and powerful and able to conquer and control --> 00:16:21.700 Next we come to verse 33. 00:16:23.379 --> 00:16:23.840 It says, 00:16:24.280 --> 00:16:28.440 The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. 00:16:30.020 --> 00:16:35.820 The casting of lots, as some of you will know, is similar to rolling dice or flipping a coin. 00:16:35.820 --> 00:16:42.500 When someone doesn't know what to decide or to try to keep it fair, they will cast lots. 00:16:42.760 --> 00:16:44.580 Kind of like at the beginning of the Super Bowl. 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:46.980 One of the teams needs to kick. 00:16:47.660 --> 00:16:48.540 Who should do it? 00:16:48.580 --> 00:16:49.440 Let's flip a coin. 00:16:49.540 --> 00:16:50.360 And that's what they do. 00:16:52.160 --> 00:16:53.820 Casting lots is not uncommon. 00:16:53.960 --> 00:16:56.660 And actually we find it several times in the Bible. 00:16:56.659 --> 00:17:01.339 Even to determine God's direction, we see that lots are cast. 00:17:01.980 --> 00:17:13.740 After losing the battle of Ai, the Lord used lots, the casting of lots, to point out Achan being the person responsible for the army's defeat. 00:17:16.559 --> 00:17:21.980 Land allotments for the tribes of Israel were determined by casting lots before the Lord. 00:17:21.980 --> 00:17:31.380 And if we look at the New Testament, we also see that the apostles used lots to decide who would be the 12th disciple replacing Judas. 00:17:33.579 --> 00:17:41.259 Now before we dig more into that verse, I just want to point out that I'm not saying that we should go home and cast lots to make decisions. 00:17:41.740 --> 00:17:44.900 I don't think that as Christians we're called to do that anymore. 00:17:45.279 --> 00:17:49.000 The reason for that is for several reasons. 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:54.400 One is we don't see a command in Scripture from Jesus saying we should cast lots. 00:17:54.500 --> 00:18:02.160 We don't see the casting of lots used as a way to determine God's leading in any of the rest of the New Testament. 00:18:03.400 --> 00:18:11.539 After it was done in Acts 1, in Acts 2, the believers are given the Holy Spirit. 00:18:12.099 --> 00:18:12.279 Right? 00:18:12.279 --> 00:18:17.480 And it's from that point on in the New Testament that we see that people are making decisions, 00:18:18.279 --> 00:18:24.519 listening to the Spirit and the leading of the Spirit and not casting lots to find out the outcome. 00:18:27.139 --> 00:18:29.279 Alright, so let's jump back to verse 33. 00:18:30.379 --> 00:18:34.339 The point of the verses is not to tell us whether or not we should cast lots. 00:18:34.339 --> 00:18:41.899 The point of it is to remind us that things that are seemingly random, like casting lots, 00:18:43.299 --> 00:18:45.519 they're not random at all. 00:18:45.659 --> 00:18:47.379 They're chosen and directed by God. 00:18:48.519 --> 00:18:50.359 Matthew 10, 29 and 30 says, 00:18:50.779 --> 00:18:56.319 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny, and not one of them will fall to the ground from your father? 00:18:56.799 --> 00:18:59.259 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 00:18:59.259 --> 00:19:06.920 So small things, things that seem random, are directed by God. 00:19:07.440 --> 00:19:11.480 We live before a sovereign God who is always in control of all things, 00:19:11.539 --> 00:19:13.140 whether we plan them or whether we don't. He is in control. 00:19:25.400 --> 00:19:34.960 If we look at that verse again, it says that the lot is cast into the lap. 00:19:35.519 --> 00:19:40.500 Another way to look at this verse could also be something that is laid in front of you, 00:19:40.740 --> 00:19:43.800 something that you didn't choose or necessarily want. 00:19:45.300 --> 00:19:50.160 The phrase, that was His lot in life. 00:19:50.160 --> 00:19:57.620 Kind of pick up that idea that a situation was placed in front of someone and they had to deal with it. 00:19:58.759 --> 00:20:03.060 Seemingly random, oftentimes that's how people word it, all of God. 00:20:05.960 --> 00:20:11.680 So, as we strive to live righteously before God, we realize He's in control. 00:20:12.100 --> 00:20:13.980 He knows what is right for us, The first verse says, 00:20:34.779 --> 00:20:39.940 Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife. 00:20:39.940 --> 00:20:47.039 So, here in this verse, we have quiet being contrasted with strife. 00:20:48.180 --> 00:20:48.320 Right? 00:20:48.480 --> 00:20:52.640 So, quiet here is not referring to a level of sound, 00:20:53.019 --> 00:20:55.320 but rather a state of peace. 00:20:56.720 --> 00:21:00.299 Strife is fighting and stressfulness, 00:21:01.039 --> 00:21:05.860 whereas quiet is peace and contentment. 00:21:05.859 --> 00:21:11.319 Proverbs 15, 17 helps us get a little bit full of picture of this. 00:21:11.399 --> 00:21:11.799 It says, 00:21:12.479 --> 00:21:15.419 Better is a dinner of herbs where love is 00:21:15.419 --> 00:21:18.619 than a fattened ox and hatred with it. 00:21:19.979 --> 00:21:21.879 I don't know if anybody here has ever been 00:21:21.879 --> 00:21:26.399 at a meal where there's been strife 00:21:26.399 --> 00:21:28.859 or discontention or arguing. 00:21:30.059 --> 00:21:32.299 Cheryl and I had been to one when we were younger, 00:21:32.299 --> 00:21:35.740 and there was an argument that broke out, 00:21:35.940 --> 00:21:37.579 and the rest of the evening, 00:21:38.000 --> 00:21:40.079 even though we were in a very nice restaurant 00:21:40.079 --> 00:21:41.159 and the food was good, 00:21:41.399 --> 00:21:42.819 it was not enjoyable 00:21:42.819 --> 00:21:46.200 because the strife and the fighting that was there. 00:21:46.740 --> 00:21:49.359 I would rather have peanut butter and jelly 00:21:49.359 --> 00:21:51.779 and have it in an enjoyable setting 00:21:51.779 --> 00:21:54.399 than the steak with the fighting, 00:21:54.559 --> 00:21:57.200 and that's what Solomon was talking about here. peace 00:22:25.859 --> 00:22:27.919 and add to strife 00:22:27.919 --> 00:22:31.079 so that if these things are coming from us, 00:22:31.079 --> 00:22:32.619 there are things that we can work on, 00:22:32.720 --> 00:22:35.559 things that we can fight against 00:22:35.559 --> 00:22:37.379 through the power of the Spirit. 00:22:37.939 --> 00:22:40.379 Anger comes up a lot in Proverbs. 00:22:40.519 --> 00:22:43.179 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife. 00:22:44.519 --> 00:22:46.500 Quarrelsome or criticizing. 00:22:47.659 --> 00:22:50.099 Proverbs 21.19 says this, 00:22:50.599 --> 00:22:53.500 It is better to live in a desert land 00:22:53.500 --> 00:22:56.639 than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman. 00:22:57.579 --> 00:22:59.279 Now, I will say that verse 00:22:59.279 --> of. 00:25:19.599 --> 00:25:23.879 First is we can assume that the family has some money, right? 00:25:24.059 --> 00:25:25.879 They have servants. 00:25:27.099 --> 00:25:30.119 They have an inheritance that it talks about. 00:25:32.119 --> 00:25:35.119 We also see there's a wise servant. 00:25:36.159 --> 00:25:39.179 His work as a servant is done wisely and righteously. 00:25:39.180 --> 00:25:41.720 So in this case, I think of Joseph. 00:25:42.560 --> 00:25:45.620 Joseph started out as a slave in Potiphar's house, 00:25:45.720 --> 00:25:47.620 but because of his work ethic, 00:25:47.920 --> 00:25:48.759 his honesty, 00:25:49.440 --> 00:25:50.519 and God's favor, 00:25:50.940 --> 00:25:52.080 he's given command 00:25:52.080 --> 00:25:54.840 underneath Potiphar 00:25:54.840 --> 00:25:56.220 over all that he owned. 00:25:56.840 --> 00:25:58.380 The other thing we see here in this verse 00:25:58.380 --> 00:26:01.480 is a son who acts shamefully. 00:26:01.480 --> 00:26:06.160 And the idea here isn't that the son messed up once or twice. 00:26:06.259 --> 00:26:08.640 He did, he made some foolish mistakes, 00:26:09.299 --> 00:26:13.740 but the idea is that the shameful acts are ongoing, 00:26:13.960 --> 00:26:14.599 they're continuing, 00:26:14.920 --> 00:26:16.900 and he's living a life of shame, 00:26:17.140 --> 00:26:19.819 and it's bringing shame on the family. 00:26:21.160 --> 00:26:24.460 Think of the prodigal son in this case, 00:26:24.539 --> 00:26:25.940 where he had wealth, 00:26:26.039 --> 00:26:27.960 he had responsibility in the family, 00:26:27.960 --> 00:26:29.400 but he didn't want that life. 00:26:29.740 --> 00:26:30.900 He wanted his own life. 00:26:31.500 --> 00:26:33.340 And so he acted shamefully. 00:26:34.539 --> 00:26:38.059 So in this situation where we have a rich family, 00:26:38.180 --> 00:26:38.900 they have servants, 00:26:39.000 --> 00:26:39.860 they have an inheritance, 00:26:40.319 --> 00:26:41.680 typically the son, 00:26:41.779 --> 00:26:42.420 as he grew up, 00:26:42.460 --> 00:26:45.360 would be able to rule over the servant. 00:26:46.019 --> 00:26:47.799 He would take on that responsibility. 00:26:48.059 --> 00:26:49.259 And as the parents died, 00:26:49.620 --> 00:26:51.460 then he would share in the inheritance 00:26:51.460 --> 00:26:53.420 of the family's wealth that was left. 00:26:55.019 --> 00:26:55.940 However, this verse 00:26:55.940 --> 00:27:00.539 not only talks about how the son is unable to rule, 00:27:01.519 --> 00:27:03.440 and also how the wisdom 00:27:03.440 --> 00:27:06.600 and the close relationship of the servant 00:27:06.600 --> 00:27:13.140 actually puts him in the place of ruling over the son. 00:27:13.200 --> 00:27:15.539 And we see the same thing with the inheritance, right? 00:27:15.900 --> 00:27:17.500 The son continues in shame, 00:27:17.980 --> 00:27:19.620 and he's cut off from the inheritance. 00:27:19.619 --> 00:27:21.759 The servant, 00:27:22.279 --> 00:27:25.079 who is wise and righteous in his doing, 00:27:25.479 --> 00:27:27.399 he actually is given the inheritance 00:27:27.399 --> 00:27:28.599 in the son's place. 00:27:28.759 --> 00:27:30.319 He becomes part of the family. 00:27:31.899 --> 00:27:34.079 So there's a couple points in this verse. 00:27:34.179 --> 00:27:35.039 One of them is this, 00:27:35.159 --> 00:27:39.419 that being wise and being diligent 00:27:39.419 --> 00:27:44.519 can actually overcome disadvantages of birth, right? 00:27:44.579 --> 00:27:46.139 There's people that we know 00:27:46.139 --> 00:27:47.739 who were born in a certain situation, 00:27:47.740 --> 00:27:49.319 but they didn't let that situation 00:27:49.319 --> 00:27:50.599 keep them where they were. 00:27:52.400 --> 00:27:55.220 And God blesses hard work 00:27:55.220 --> 00:27:58.059 and living for him with successes. 00:27:59.299 --> 00:28:01.279 The other side of that is true also. 00:28:01.440 --> 00:28:04.240 We know people who had a lot of wealth, 00:28:04.400 --> 00:28:07.559 but through unrighteousness and foolish living, 00:28:08.559 --> 00:28:09.759 it brought failures. 00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:11.319 It brought missed opportunities. 00:28:11.920 --> 00:28:14.200 It brought wasted fortunes. 00:28:14.200 --> 00:28:17.400 But in this verse, 00:28:17.460 --> 00:28:19.819 there's a great picture of the family of God. 00:28:20.980 --> 00:28:22.039 Remember the Israelites, 00:28:22.660 --> 00:28:23.840 God's chosen people. 00:28:24.000 --> 00:28:25.160 They were blessed, 00:28:25.500 --> 00:28:26.759 and they were given an inheritance. 00:28:27.740 --> 00:28:29.940 However, as we read through the Old Testament, 00:28:30.580 --> 00:28:32.539 we know that they turned away from God. 00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:35.480 They chose to live foolishly 00:28:35.480 --> 00:28:37.700 and shamefully before God. 00:28:38.240 --> 00:28:39.840 So God allowed their inheritance 00:28:39.840 --> 00:28:40.840 to be taken away, 00:28:40.839 --> 00:28:44.119 and he allowed them to become servants 00:28:44.119 --> 00:28:45.279 for other nations. 00:28:48.699 --> 00:28:51.379 They were unable to live holy 00:28:51.379 --> 00:28:53.619 and righteously before God. 00:28:54.199 --> 00:28:55.019 They failed it. 00:28:56.599 --> 00:28:58.059 But we're not going to be too hard on them 00:28:58.059 --> 00:28:58.740 because you know what? 00:28:58.759 --> 00:28:59.439 If we were there, 00:28:59.539 --> 00:29:01.159 we would probably fail as well. 00:29:01.519 --> 00:29:04.480 We fail at it now. as many of you know, 00:31:13.599 --> 00:31:15.699 comes in different sizes. 00:31:15.939 --> 00:31:17.439 It's usually bowl-shaped 00:31:17.439 --> 00:31:21.059 and can be made of ceramic or graphite, 00:31:21.399 --> 00:31:24.019 something that can withstand extreme heat 00:31:24.019 --> 00:31:26.479 because its purpose is to be heated 00:31:26.479 --> 00:31:29.539 and melt what's inside of that bowl. 00:31:29.539 --> 00:31:32.039 And in the same way, 00:31:32.339 --> 00:31:34.079 a furnace is used to melt things 00:31:34.079 --> 00:31:35.480 like steel or glass. 00:31:35.799 --> 00:31:36.960 In this case, 00:31:37.039 --> 00:31:38.359 in this verse that we're reading, 00:31:38.799 --> 00:31:39.779 to melt gold. 00:31:40.819 --> 00:31:41.779 Once it is melted, 00:31:41.980 --> 00:31:44.559 any impurities would separate 00:31:44.559 --> 00:31:45.980 from the gold or the silver. 00:31:46.619 --> 00:31:47.879 And at that point, 00:31:47.980 --> 00:31:49.379 it becomes easy to tell 00:31:49.379 --> 00:31:54.480 if that gold or that silver is pure 00:31:54.480 --> 00:31:58.180 or how polluted it is. 00:31:58.700 --> 00:31:58.859 Right? 00:31:58.859 --> 00:31:59.939 Once it's melted, 00:32:00.059 --> 00:32:01.359 those impurities separate, 00:32:01.779 --> 00:32:03.459 and we're able to pull that off. 00:32:04.039 --> 00:32:05.719 So not only are we able to test 00:32:05.719 --> 00:32:07.279 its authenticity, 00:32:07.599 --> 00:32:09.019 but we can make it pure. 00:32:09.199 --> 00:32:11.419 The end of the process of that 00:32:11.419 --> 00:32:13.639 should leave us with gold and silver 00:32:13.639 --> 00:32:15.699 that is more pure and more valuable 00:32:15.699 --> 00:32:16.679 than when it started. 00:32:18.859 --> 00:32:20.599 So the crucible and
