once again really the temple as we looked at last week 00:01:20.680 --> 00:01:26.719 it's more than just brick and mortar it represents the presence of god amongst his people not that god 00:01:26.719 --> 00:01:33.079 is confined to a house god makes that very clear but that it is a representation of god's presence 00:01:33.079 --> 00:01:43.939 there amongst his people and ezra the israelites uh we'll see today's zerubbabel these figures have 00:01:43.939 --> 00:01:48.579 come back to jerusalem and they are rebuilding the temple and re-establishing worship but 00:01:48.579 --> 00:01:55.500 a very specific kind of worship according to god's word it's very instructive for us 00:01:55.500 --> 00:02:01.039 because it's going to teach us in a sense what true worship looks like 00:02:01.040 --> 00:02:09.260 the priorities we must have as we come before god in worship so three things this will be a shorter 00:02:09.260 --> 00:02:15.960 sermon i'll try to pack it uh pretty tightly we want to have as much time for our missionaries to 00:02:15.960 --> 00:02:20.360 share but we're going to look at three things from chapter three and a bit into chapter four 00:02:20.360 --> 00:02:25.580 this text will teach us that true worship begins and ends with god's word first and foremost 00:02:25.580 --> 00:02:31.880 it begins and ends with god's word the second is that true worship is orderly and spirit would be at work as we open your word in jesus name amen 00:03:08.859 --> 00:03:15.119 let us jump right into uh into the first point that true worship begins and ends with god's word 00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:24.920 look with me uh ezra 3 1 to 6 i'm not going to read the section over again but notice that uh 00:03:24.920 --> 00:03:34.980 throughout ezra chapter 3 verses 1 to 6 we uh repeatedly see as it was written as it was written 00:03:34.980 --> 00:03:42.659 according to moses there's always references to the scriptures that came before they are setting up the 00:03:42.659 --> 00:03:49.599 temple not in a haphazard way but according to god's word and this is a very important thing because 00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:55.099 the israelites were in exile precisely because they didn't follow god's word they didn't worship 00:03:55.099 --> 00:04:02.460 according to god's design and god's instructions yeah they still worship god here and there but they 00:04:02.460 --> 00:04:10.280 also worshiped baal and asherah and molek these false gods that were in the region that god expressly 00:04:10.280 --> 00:04:18.560 told them do not worship them very very clear god wants us to worship according to his word 00:04:18.560 --> 00:04:24.939 so the re-establishing of the temple and the worship that will take place in jerusalem it was integral 00:04:24.939 --> 00:04:32.579 that as they re-establish it it is according to god's word and god has consistently given had 00:04:32.579 --> 00:04:36.779 consistently given israel very clear instructions from abraham 00:04:36.779 --> 00:04:45.899 uh to the israelites at mount sinai the giving of the law everything that defined israel was defined 00:04:45.899 --> 00:04:52.120 by god's proclamation god was the one who spoke in a sense israel together brought them together with 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:58.839 his words so important was it that in deuteronomy chapter 4 god makes it very clear to moses who's 00:04:58.839 --> 00:05:04.459 supposed to say to the people you shall not add to the word that i command you nor take from it 00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:09.359 that you may keep the commandments of the lord your god that i command you 00:05:09.359 --> 00:05:18.519 you see uh how it was so vital for the building of the the altar the various offerings that were offered 00:05:18.519 --> 00:05:22.739 the keeping of the feast is all according to god's word 00:05:22.740 --> 00:05:31.840 even the timing of the rebuild the building of the altar it's all connected with the scriptural 00:05:31.840 --> 00:05:42.500 commands we won't dive into it but there's allusions to abraham coming from uh mesopotamia or to uh the 00:05:42.500 --> 00:05:49.079 promised land there's allusions to it that moses or sorry that uh abraham he erects an altar the first 00:05:49.079 --> 00:05:54.079 thing he does when he comes into the promised land so too when the israelites come out of exit what do 00:05:54.079 --> 00:05:59.939 they do they establish first and foremost an altar again that's according to god's word they build the 00:05:59.939 --> 00:06:06.339 temple in the same month and in the same way using the same materials as solomon from first kings uh 00:06:06.339 --> 00:06:11.779 chapter six and on it's a wonder like it's it's a wonderful chapter to read that whole section of 00:06:11.779 --> 00:06:17.659 solomon building the temple but we see so much of that it's like it was a cut and paste right into our text 00:06:17.660 --> 00:06:24.780 again according to god's word and keeping the high holidays as to recall god's word and his 00:06:24.780 --> 00:06:27.939 deliverance everything that they have done is according to god's word 00:06:27.939 --> 00:06:36.260 the rebuilding of the temple is saturated in scripture and carefully follows god's design and 00:06:36.260 --> 00:06:40.520 why is this important why is it important that we that we worship according to god's word 00:06:40.519 --> 00:06:46.799 because uh when like i mentioned when israel deviated from god's ways it's not just that they were 00:06:46.799 --> 00:06:55.359 they were jettisoned into exile because god told them something to do and they didn't do it and god 00:06:55.359 --> 00:07:03.039 you know he got frustrated he he you didn't listen to me he i'm a petty god i'm gonna kick you out no 00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:10.700 because god designs worship in such a way to glorify him but also for our benefit our flourishing is 00:07:10.700 --> 00:07:17.480 involved with that so it's not just that the israelites worship these false gods the bales the 00:07:17.480 --> 00:07:25.379 asherahs the moleks but with that false worship came the the disintegration of their society 00:07:25.379 --> 00:07:32.480 rape and mutilation the sacrificing of children 00:07:32.480 --> 00:07:40.159 it's a horrible horrible thing it's not again that god was petty you didn't follow my rules you're out 00:07:40.159 --> 00:07:46.860 but the land itself becomes polluted when god's word when god's worship isn't according to his word 00:07:46.860 --> 00:07:53.259 it's not exclusive to him and we decide to to make up the will be a bane it will be a horrible horrible nightmare for them if they engage in it 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:29.180 this is why it is so important to worship god according to his law for the to be a part of of god's word i think it's the same thing because we're 00:08:41.639 --> 00:08:46.940 worshiping people if we don't worship god according to his ways we will worship something
