things that makes a passage exceptional, for one, is that I have that undeserved and 00:02:28.280 --> 00:02:36.420 rich privilege of studying the Scriptures specifically for my own soul's sake and spiritually encouraged and nurtured and strengthened through the word of God is 00:07:46.039 --> 00:07:51.039 not something that God intends to have happen in the believer's life once a Sunday. through a passage, we have a tendency kind of, well, I want to do verse 48 and 49 00:09:19.079 --> 00:09:22.379 and I want to finish the chapter because it's on my reading plan. 00:09:23.740 --> 00:09:28.379 And that's not all bad, but it helps to really dig in and say, what is going on here? 00:09:29.360 --> 00:09:32.339 So I want you to mark what the text says there in verse 37. 00:09:32.479 --> 00:09:32.719 It says, 00:09:32.719 --> 00:09:38.480 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out. 00:09:38.480 --> 00:09:48.779 John uses that phrase to identify the moment in the Jewish celebration of the Feast of Booths or the Feast of the Tabernacles 00:09:48.779 --> 00:09:54.100 when Jesus made a particular announcement at that concluding day. 00:09:55.220 --> 00:10:00.840 Now, I want you to understand that the Feast of Tabernacles was one of three explicit feasts 00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:06.659 that God instructed His people, the nation of Israel, to celebrate publicly. 00:10:06.659 --> 00:10:13.100 They were celebrations that were obligations to the nation of Israel. 00:10:13.319 --> 00:10:14.980 How many of you enjoy Thanksgiving? 00:10:16.299 --> 00:10:19.879 I mean, hey, we're going to have a Thanksgiving dinner, and it's a nice thing. 00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:21.279 It's dinner on the grounds. 00:10:21.500 --> 00:10:22.439 It's potluck. 00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:24.059 It's all those good things rolled together. 00:10:24.519 --> 00:10:29.919 But do you know that Thanksgiving celebration is not something that is obligated on us spiritually? 00:10:29.919 --> 00:10:32.959 There's no passage in the Bible that says, 00:10:33.599 --> 00:10:37.399 Thou shalt do Thanksgiving and Christmas and Easter. 00:10:37.659 --> 00:10:38.740 You know, it's... 00:10:38.740 --> 00:10:41.319 But God told the nation of Israel, 00:10:41.539 --> 00:10:44.919 You are to have these three feasts and celebrations. 00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:46.919 One of them was the Feast of Tabernacles. 00:10:47.959 --> 00:10:52.919 And incidentally, that feast was the time in which God wanted them to live in... 00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:57.159 Actually, to get out in the neighborhood or in their yard and live in tents. 00:10:59.819 --> 00:11:00.899 And they did that. 00:11:02.120 --> 00:11:07.579 In fact, if you want to go home and fire up 00:12:04.759 And what the nation of Israel did during the Feast of Tabernacles 00:12:04.759 --> 00:12:06.079 is they reminded themselves, 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:09.100 The God who made promises is the one who's going to get you home. 00:12:09.179 --> 00:12:10.159 He's going to take care of things. 00:12:10.460 --> 00:12:12.659 And this is a time when you remember His care. 00:12:12.659 --> 00:12:18.539 It was also a very interesting time where on every day, 00:12:20.839 --> 00:12:24.039 the priest, one of the priests that was assigned with the responsibility, 00:12:24.539 --> 00:12:29.459 would take a golden urn or a golden pitcher, 00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:31.459 a large water pitcher, 00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:34.480 and he would walk down to the Pool of Salome 00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:35.539 and he would dip it in 00:12:35.539 --> 00:12:40.240 and then he would carry it back to where the main altar was 00:12:40.240 --> 00:12:42.779 and he would pour that water out. upon you sending rain. 00:15:43.240 --> 00:15:46.560 That's what the rabbis today would communicate. 00:15:46.559 --> 00:15:55.319 I tend to think that the thinking of the Old Testament saint was probably a little more instructed by the Scriptures 00:15:55.319 --> 00:15:58.419 rather than the matter of seasons. 00:15:59.919 --> 00:16:03.119 And Alfred Edersheim, who is a Bible scholar, great altar 00:16:14.100 --> 00:16:18.000 was really a reference to the coming of the Messiah and salvation 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:20.639 and also the giving of the Holy Spirit. 00:16:20.860 --> of those seven days, 00:19:03.180 --> 00:19:06.980 Jesus used the symbolic pouring out of the water 00:19:06.980 --> 00:19:09.460 to announce his wonderful offer. 00:19:12.180 --> 00:19:15.240 I want you to understand as you go back to John chapter 7 00:19:15.240 --> 00:19:19.299 that no one should be able to ever say 00:19:19.299 --> 00:19:22.799 that Jesus was not clear about his person, 00:19:23.840 --> 00:19:24.660 his mission, 00:19:25.360 --> 00:19:26.860 or his offer of salvation. 00:19:26.859 --> 00:19:30.339 Not only did he begin his public ministry 00:19:30.339 --> 00:19:31.659 with the cleansing of the temple, 00:19:32.039 --> 00:19:34.079 but he stepped out into the limelight 00:19:34.079 --> 00:19:35.639 on this great day, 00:19:35.719 --> 00:19:38.319 this
