As I turn in my notes, I want to think of myself as a good person. 00:00:17.600 --> 00:00:23.640 And in fact, not only do I want to be able to think of myself as a good person and know myself as a good person, 00:00:24.019 --> 00:00:26.660 I want you to think of me as a good person. 00:00:26.660 --> 00:00:34.460 And chances are, in fact more than chances, every single one of you who is listening to this probably thinks the same way, 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:41.219 that you desire to be able to think of yourself as a good person and you hope that other people think of yourself as a good person. 00:00:41.340 --> 00:00:45.000 It's very Canadian and very human. 00:00:46.480 --> 00:00:52.019 Part of the reason I was thinking about this is not just because of the scripture text that I've been meditating upon all week, 00:00:52.020 --> 00:01:01.400 but also because just a week or so ago I finished watching with my wife the two seasons of the Ricky Gervais show that's on Netflix, Afterlife. 00:01:01.940 --> 00:01:07.900 By the way, when I mention shows that I've watched, I'm never recommending that you necessarily watch these things. 00:01:08.859 --> 00:01:13.579 As you know, Ricky Gervais, many of you might or might not know, he's a very, very funny English comic, 00:01:13.740 --> 00:01:17.560 has a very type of biting humor, and is a very, very well-known atheist. 00:01:17.560 --> 00:01:24.840 And the show, on one level, deals very powerfully about the whole theme of suicide and grief. 00:01:25.600 --> 00:01:32.420 But especially in the second season, a very, very important part of the show is the question as to whether or not the main character, Ricky Gervais, 00:01:32.520 --> 00:01:33.579 is whether he's a good person. 00:01:33.960 --> 00:01:40.120 And he obviously has a great desire to be able to think of himself and be recognized as a good person. 00:01:40.520 --> 00:01:42.359 So it's very, very Canadian. 00:01:42.359 --> 00:01:52.039 But if you think about it, though, let's say we call this the good person project that most of us, including myself at different times, 00:01:52.120 --> 00:01:59.819 although I'm going to qualify it as the sermon goes on, if you think about it, there's lots of problems with the good person project. 00:02:00.439 --> 00:02:04.780 If we're honest about it, seeking to be a good person is very fragile. 00:02:04.780 --> 00:02:13.280 Now, some of you might not think that's the case with you because you've had a long time of nobody ever getting mad at you or calling you names 00:02:13.280 --> 00:02:19.439 or you haven't been fired, you haven't been called out by a boss or something like that. 00:02:19.500 --> 00:02:24.879 But for those of us who've had people come up and say, you know, you say very, very hard things about us 00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:31.680 or being dressed down by a spouse or a child or a brother or sister or your friend or a neighbor, 00:02:32.379 --> 00:02:38.039 you realize that, in fact, many of us, our sense of being a good person is very fragile. 00:02:39.639 --> 00:02:45.340 I think every single one of us is aware of how a person who might say something about us, 00:02:45.340 --> 00:02:51.700 pointing out some major character fault can cause us to be depressed and anxious. 00:02:52.640 --> 00:02:57.539 And for an hour, for a day, a week, a month, it can really bother us. 00:02:57.640 --> 00:03:02.400 And if you think about it, it's partially because the good person project is very, very fragile. 00:03:03.080 --> 00:03:07.020 And the second thing is that, in fact, there's a problem with it. 00:03:07.039 --> 00:03:13.199 Like I just said, that probably every Canadian would say that they want to be able to think of themselves as a good person 00:03:13.199 --> 00:03:15.519 and they want others to think of themselves as a good person. 00:03:15.959 --> 00:03:19.500 But if you think about it for another moment, there's lots of problems with that. 00:03:20.639 --> 00:03:25.859 I mean, that means that the person who listens to CNN and watches CNN wants to think that they're a good person. 00:03:25.919 --> 00:03:29.039 And the person who watches Fox News wants to think they're a good person. 00:03:29.759 --> 00:03:32.939 But what do people who watch CNN think about people who watch Fox? 00:03:33.639 --> 00:03:36.539 What do people who watch Fox think about people who watch CNN? 00:03:37.060 --> 00:03:42.919 What about the very, very, very orthodox and devout Muslim and the very, very, very secular atheist? 00:03:42.919 --> 00:03:44.799 Both of them want to be thought of as a good person. 00:03:44.899 --> 00:03:50.339 And both of them will think that there's huge parts of the other person that are just fundamentally wrong. 00:03:51.219 --> 00:03:57.699 So we see that if we think about it for a second, on one hand, there's this human desire to think of yourself as a good person, 00:03:57.819 --> 00:04:03.539 to in effect have a good person project as, whether you recognize it or not, a part of who you are, 00:04:03.639 --> 00:04:06.199 part of your human existence, so to speak. 00:04:06.539 --> 00:04:11.500 And at the same time, you think about it, there's actually lots of problems with this. 00:04:11.500 --> 00:04:19.939 The Bible text that we're going to look at today actually has very, very powerful insights into this project. 00:04:20.680 --> 00:04:25.920 And we'll end up taking people who follow the Bible and listen to its wisdom in a very, very different place 00:04:25.920 --> 00:04:29.800 to look at the whole project in a very, very different way, 00:04:30.199 --> 00:04:36.779 but really in a way that actually answers the longings and yearnings of your heart in a wise and very powerful way. 00:04:36.779 --> 00:04:40.539 So just before we look at it, we're going to be looking at Philippians chapter 3, verse 1. 00:04:40.599 --> 00:04:41.859 I'm just going to say a brief prayer. 00:04:42.819 --> 00:04:46.079 Philippians chapter 3, verse 1, if you want to follow along in your Bible. 00:04:46.219 --> 00:04:47.439 But here's just a brief prayer. 00:04:48.099 --> 00:04:54.479 Father, we ask that the Holy Spirit would lead us and guide us into all truth. 00:04:54.480 --> 00:04:59.660 And that as the Holy Spirit leads us and guides us into all truth, 00:04:59.740 --> 00:05:04.120 that we would have a new and deeper appreciation for who Jesus is, 00:05:04.340 --> 00:05:09.700 for what he accomplished for us in his sinless life, in his sacrificial death, in his mighty resurrection. 00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:15.500 And Father, grip us with this deep truth of what you have done for us 00:05:15.500 --> 00:05:18.300 in the person of your Son and the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:05:18.819 --> 00:05:20.840 And we ask this in Jesus' name. is writing this to the very first European Christians, 00:05:34.379 --> 00:05:37.199 and he is in chains. 00:05:37.679 --> 00:05:42.259 So that's actually going to be one of the ironies of looking at the good person project, 00:05:42.479 --> 00:05:49.159 being a good person project, by Paul, who's in chains for a criminal, 00:05:49.160 --> 00:05:52.740 and he's not sure if he's going to be executed for being an enemy of the state. 00:05:53.220 --> 00:05:54.360 And he's under house arrest. 00:05:54.740 --> 00:05:57.540 And he's writing to these Christians in another city. 00:05:57.780 --> 00:06:00.160 And here's how this particular chapter begins. 00:06:00.220 --> 00:06:04.260 One of the things we do, by the way, at Church and Messiah is we preach through books of the Bible as much and more is looking both what he's just said, 00:06:50.299 --> 00:06:54.019 that in fact, to rejoice in the Lord, that's a really good thing to be able to do. 00:06:54.079 --> 00:06:55.199 It's very, very safe. 00:06:55.659 --> 00:07:00.199 There's lots of medical evidence that gratitude gives you a healthier life. 00:07:00.500 --> 00:07:03.799 It makes you just a better person. 00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:08.459 And then on the other hand, what he's also going to say is what I'm about to write to you, 00:07:08.459 --> 00:07:12.239 which is going to be a bit of a summary of the gospel and the good person project. 00:07:12.639 --> 00:07:15.699 It's good for me to write about this and talk about this more and more and more and more. 00:07:15.799 --> 00:07:18.620 So the statement looks sort of in both directions at the same time. 00:07:19.599 --> 00:07:24.459 But then, all of a sudden, the next bit is very shocking for Canadians. 00:07:25.620 --> 00:07:29.959 And in fact, you think that what he's going to do now is maybe talk to you a little bit about gratitude, 00:07:30.120 --> 00:07:31.359 a little bit about rejoicing. 00:07:31.360 --> 00:07:36.680 But all of a sudden, he goes way off points to understand what's going on with this name-calling, 00:08:03.379 --> 00:08:05.900 which is what it seems like to us as Canadians. 00:08:06.500 --> 00:08:10.120 And the first one is, and I haven't contradicted myself. 00:08:41.420 --> 00:08:44.560 In fact, I could even say that he's a bad Christian, or I could say that about myself. 00:08:44.940 --> 00:08:46.539 And I haven't contradicted myself. 00:08:46.620 --> 00:08:48.600 It's not like saying I'm bad good. 00:08:48.600 --> 00:08:53.480 And that's because, in fact, it's a very important thing. 00:08:53.920 --> 00:08:58.500 We Christians, we breathe the air of our culture and want to live the good person project. 00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:01.800 And that's why we need to gather and worship. 00:09:02.000 --> you in your own experience that are racist, 00:10:43.940 --> 00:10:49.680 or if you see that in your child or your spouse or your best friend, what do you want them to do? 00:10:49.700 --> them to embrace being very comfortable with the other and with difference. 00:11:15.379 --> 00:11:24.179 You want to have people actually have a love for people, regardless of the color of their skin 00:11:34.019 And if you understand that, what you see going on here is this. 00:11:34.379 --> 00:11:38.539 Now, this is one of the cases where, and you sort of have to take my word for it, 00:11:58.740 --> 00:12:08.960 And it's still going to be a little bit shocking because one of the things that he's rejecting is all human credentials to be used in the Good Person Project. about those who wear MAGA hats and how they might think about people who, you know, who love CNN. 00:12:27.720 --> 00:12:29.980 And the types of names that they use for each other. 00:12:30.780 --> 00:12:37.740 And so what Paul is doing is he's taking people who want to turn the Christian faith in the gospel into a type of religion 00:12:37.740 --> 00:12:44.919 which focuses on exalting human credentials to make themselves feel that they're more important 00:12:44.919 --> 00:12:47.180 and are confusing people about it. 00:12:47.180 --> 00:12:49.940 And he's using the language that they use of other people. 00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:53.720 And he turns it on them and says they're actually the ones who are doing this. 00:12:54.200 --> 00:12:58.759 And it's especially powerful because the key idea of mutilation and circumcision, 00:12:59.720 --> 00:13:02.840 the original hearer, people wouldn't have been reading this letter. 00:13:02.940 --> 00:13:04.019 They would have been hearing the letter. 00:13:04.019 --> 00:13:08.699 And the two words sound very similar, but they have completely opposite directions. 00:13:09.819 --> 00:13:13.480 And so what Paul's doing is he's really calling understand a little bit about what he's doing 00:13:39.159 --> 00:13:46.079 by contrasting these people who want to turn the Christian faith into a type of religion 00:13:46.079 --> 00:13:48.240 based on human credentials. 00:13:49.439 --> 00:13:51.019 So look at verses 4 to 6. 00:13:51.019 --> 00:13:58.240 Now, what Paul's doing here is he's saying, listen, if you want to go down the human credential 00:13:58.240 --> 00:14:03.199 corridor, if you want to walk down the human credential path, I get an A+. 00:14:03.199 --> 00:14:09.899 All those people who are against me, they think they have a good score on human credentials. 00:14:10.779 --> 00:14:16.419 You can add all their human scores together, and I'm going to beat them all by myself. 00:14:16.419 --> 00:14:19.059 That's how fundraisers and the supporters for the whole residential school 00:16:39.600 --> 00:16:40.200 project. 00:16:40.200 --> 00:16:49.379 And they would be shocked to see everybody, well, I bet we'd want again, because he uses actually literally, he uses literally the language of 00:23:32.240 --> 00:23:32.759 finance. 00:23:33.240 --> 00:23:42.439 Verse 7, but whatever gain funds in, good operating That if people really got close to me, they'd like me less. 00:26:12.559 --> 00:26:20.599 And that's a very, very deep, unsettling fear underneath the whole good person project. 00:26:21.220 --> 00:26:24.339 But the Bible reveals that the triune God knows you perfectly. 00:26:25.179 --> 00:26:34.899 And knowing you perfectly still shows you unmerited kindness in working to make you right with 00:26:34.899 --> 00:26:36.799 him and fit you for heaven. 00:26:36.799 --> 00:26:46.599 Just before I read the next few verses to finish this, Philippians chapter 3, verses 9, 10, and 11, 00:26:47.359 the law, that is 00:28:08.360 --> 00:28:13.660 from rules, but that which comes through faith in Christ. 00:28:13.660 --> 00:28:18.820 The righteousness from God that depends or is grounded on faith. 00:28:19.820 --> 00:28:23.060 So what does this righteousness from God mean? 00:28:23.180 --> 00:28:26.220 Well, here's a very simple analogy to help you understand. 00:28:26.500 --> 00:28:30.360 It's just a whole idea of something needs to be made right. 00:28:30.980 --> 00:28:36.460 So just go back and think a year from now, and we're able to go to restaurants again, and 00:28:36.460 -->
