me say from the outset, the answer might be a bit different to what we expect. 00:03:22.860 --> 00:03:30.920 Now, if you're new to Christianity and you're not sure about this devil character, can I --> 00:03:57.179 Now, first, I think we get a glimpse into how Satan can tempt people to do evil, what strategies 00:03:57.179 --> 00:03:57.899 he uses. 00:03:58.379 --> 00:04:05.479 So he appeals to our sense of entitlement, suggesting that life is found purely in our earthly needs. 00:04:05.479 --> 00:04:15.359 Or he can pretend to be an angel of light, bringing to mind scripture even, provoking us to prove God's 00:04:15.359 --> 00:04:16.639 love to keep us safe. 00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:22.699 Or he can outright just try and entice us with what the world can offer. 00:04:23.439 --> 00:04:26.819 So we do get a glimpse of how Satan works here. 00:04:26.819 --> 00:04:31.860 I think the other obvious lesson is that we get an example of how to fight. 00:04:33.019 --> 00:04:38.139 Jesus trumps the lies with the truth, what God says in his word. 00:04:41.019 --> 00:04:50.480 So although there's these two obvious lessons, valuable lessons, about the spiritual dimension to the 00:04:50.480 --> 00:04:55.920 choices we make in life, there is a serious flaw to making this passage immediately about us, 00:04:55.920 --> 00:04:59.199 as if it's a manual for how we fight temptation. 00:04:59.800 --> 00:05:02.259 They're good lessons, but it's not about us directly. 00:05:05.580 --> 00:05:09.840 Matthew wants us to see something crucially important about Jesus. 00:05:12.520 --> 00:05:19.400 For us to see it, we need to pause and consider humanity's just sorry track record. 00:05:19.399 --> 00:05:28.099 So from Adam, the first son of God, even in a state of relationship, a nation this time, 00:05:59.579 --> 00:06:02.500 the nation of Israel, the Jewish people. 00:06:02.979 --> 00:06:07.419 Out of all the nations, these people would be God's special possession. 00:06:07.420 --> 00:06:17.360 Out of all the earth, this is his special possession, to live with God under his good laws. 00:06:17.660 --> 00:06:21.580 And they were called to an incredible calling, to be a witness to the nations, 00:06:21.840 --> 00:06:26.220 to be a light so that people would come under the good rule of God and have life. 00:06:27.560 --> 00:06:31.060 But then this nation, this son, fails as well. 00:06:31.060 --> 00:06:37.100 And we see it clearly in the wilderness experience after they leave Egypt. 00:06:37.500 --> 00:06:43.439 So when Jesus quotes we've chosen evil, forfeiting the life God offers. 00:07:52.500 --> 00:07:55.540 If we're going to have any freedom, if we're going to have life, 00:07:55.720 --> 00:07:58.819 we need a champion to fight on our behalf. 00:07:59.500 --> 00:08:01.959 We need someone outside of the problem. 00:08:02.959 --> 00:08:06.720 We need someone who's stronger than this foe. 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:14.000 We need a son who remains loyal to God the Father all the way to represent us. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:19.980 That's why we really need to hear this passage. 00:08:19.980 --> 00:08:28.879 So we heard at his baptism the Father calling him to be the servant of the world, 00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:36.580 lowering himself, identifying with sinners in order to become the king, 00:08:36.680 --> 00:08:38.600 in order to be the name above all names, 00:08:39.080 --> 00:08:42.320 in order to become the connection point between God and mankind. 00:08:42.320 --> 00:08:44.660 So we've heard it. 00:08:44.940 --> 00:08:46.020 We've heard his calling. 00:08:49.040 --> 00:08:52.860 Does this man have the character to fulfill the calling? 00:08:54.020 --> 00:08:56.040 Does he have the goods? 00:08:56.440 --> feel the pressure of temptation like we do, 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:12.240 but I think that's opposite from the truth. 00:09:12.519 --> 00:09:16.000 He felt the pressure more than us because we cave in people, 00:11:30.600 --> 00:11:32.300 before they enter the promised land, 00:11:32.820 --> 00:11:35.200 before they undertake their mission in that sense. 00:11:35.200 --> 00:11:37.440 They're tested. 00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:38.879 Will they trust God? 00:11:39.040 --> 00:11:40.420 They've seen his power. 00:11:41.520 --> 00:11:43.040 Will they trust him going forward? 00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.520 So Jesus at his baptism has been declared 00:11:47.520 --> 00:11:50.160 to be in special relationship with God, 00:11:50.520 --> 00:11:52.640 to start his mission to be saviour of the world 00:11:52.640 --> 00:11:55.320 and there's this testing before he begins. 00:11:56.100 --> 00:11:56.840 Is he up for it? 00:11:59.080 --> 00:12:00.300 So let's see what he's got. 00:12:01.300 --> being God's treasured possession, 00:16:32.519 --> 00:16:35.860 and the purpose of being a light to the world for God, 00:16:36.059 --> 00:16:37.179 would rather have onions. 00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:45.240 And here's Jesus. 00:16:45.240 --> 00:16:51.279 He must have been bone weary from 40 days of fasting, 00:16:51.419 --> 00:16:54.200 completely entitled to a small bite to eat,
