cross. 00:01:01.780 --> 00:01:10.439 A cross where we know Jesus is headed to climb in a very unusual way up on his throne. 00:01:10.439 --> 00:01:18.519 And that's because, as we saw earlier in Jesus' conversation with Pilate, he is a king from another world. 00:01:18.519 --> 00:01:24.739 With a kingdom entirely different from what we might expect. 00:01:24.739 --> 00:01:31.679 Just last week, Pilate has brought Jesus out before the crowd and said, behold the man. 00:01:33.560 --> 00:01:42.780 And though Pilate himself finds no guilt in Jesus, the crowds keep insisting that Jesus be killed. 00:01:42.780 --> 00:01:48.780 Now we pick up the reading at verse 12 of John 19. 00:01:49.480 --> 00:01:53.320 Pilate's last attempt to release Jesus. 00:01:54.260 --> 00:01:56.340 Already now, remember, beaten. 00:01:56.340 --> 00:01:58.340 The bloodied head. 00:01:58.340 --> 00:02:00.420 The bloodied head. 00:02:01.560 --> 00:02:05.560 The crown of thorns pressed into it. 00:02:06.700 --> 00:02:13.379 And we hear some sobering words that we'll contemplate together about Jesus as a king. 00:02:13.379 --> 00:02:25.000 This is God's holy word given to us to point our often forgetful and wandering hearts to find hope and life in the right place. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:30.180 From then on, Pilate sought to release Jesus. 00:02:31.120 --> 00:02:35.939 But the Jews cried out, if you on Pilate, don't they? 00:03:44.379 --> 00:03:45.179 They're getting worried. 00:03:45.259 --> 00:03:47.500 He's taking too long to deal with Jesus. 00:03:47.699 --> 00:03:53.179 And they know Pilate is all too fearful of being found to have failed his boss. 00:03:53.180 --> 00:04:00.920 His boss is a recently unpredictable and vengeful Tiberius Caesar. 00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:08.039 And so the leaders make their closing argument against Jesus. 00:04:08.879 --> 00:04:13.979 And Pilate finally walks out to render his verdict. 00:04:14.519 --> 00:04:20.560 Although multiple times we've heard Pilate pronounce that he's found absolutely no guilt in Jesus. 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:33.660 Pilate makes a last ditch effort. 00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:37.860 Maybe one more time he offers them Jesus as their king. 00:04:38.259 --> 00:04:41.300 Certainly they don't want their king crucified. 00:04:41.300 --> 00:04:42.819 They'll go for this maybe. 00:04:42.819 --> 00:04:52.319 And the chief priests, to see how shocking those words are this morning for a few minutes. 00:05:23.060 --> 00:05:31.139 But I want us to do that with an awareness that there are really only two types of people in this room in this regard. 00:05:31.139 --> 00:05:36.819 There are those of us who explicitly reject Jesus as king. 00:05:36.819 --> 00:05:47.180 And there are those of us who claim Jesus as king but still sometimes reject his kingship by bowing to another king. 00:05:48.779 --> 00:05:57.139 All of us this morning need to consider how we say we have no king but Caesar. 00:05:57.139 --> 00:06:05.379 And then we need to look squarely at Jesus and see him as king and know what that would mean. 00:06:07.039 --> 00:06:09.419 We have no king but Caesar. 00:06:09.639 --> 00:06:15.919 First consider what it means to say these words this fateful night in John 19. 00:06:16.419 --> 00:06:22.300 Then we'll look at some background to this climactic moment in the story of God's people and their king. 00:06:22.300 --> 00:06:29.939 We have no king but Caesar means first that God's people are rejecting him. 00:06:31.540 --> 00:06:34.400 Rejecting Yahweh as king. 00:06:34.720 --> 00:06:36.819 They're 00:07:12.359 --> 00:07:13.919 That's what it means. 00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:20.000 That they will do what he wants them to do to get what he can give to them. 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:25.580 An idol is something or someone that you look to for life. 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:33.920 Something to shape you into its image in order to get what it promises to give you. 00:07:33.920 --> 00:07:43.879 That's why when I was a young baseball player, it fits to say that I idolized Greg Maddox. 00:07:44.819 --> 00:07:45.240 Wow. 00:07:46.439 --> 00:07:48.100 I wanted to be just like him. 00:07:48.460 --> 00:07:52.720 Although somehow I never won a Cy Young Award or a World Series. 00:07:52.720 --> 00:08:00.420 Maddox, for those of you who don't know, was a great Braves pitcher who didn't throw 100 miles an hour like Nolan Ryan. 00:08:01.060 --> 00:08:04.880 But he always seemed to make the ball move and end up right where he wanted it. 00:08:04.940 --> 00:08:08.620 He was crafty, consistent, control pitcher. 00:08:08.980 --> 00:08:16.280 So as a fellow pitcher with a fastball in the 80s, I idolized him as a pitcher. 00:08:16.279 --> 00:08:19.379 Meaning I wanted to hold the ball the way he did. 00:08:19.439 --> 00:08:21.179 I wanted to throw the ball the way he did. 00:08:21.359 --> 00:08:24.419 I even wanted to wear my socks the way that he did. 00:08:24.579 --> 00:08:28.779 That was the ticket to life, to pitch in his image. 00:08:32.220 --> 00:08:41.279 Part of Israel's idolatry is preferring to find life living in Caesar's image. 00:08:41.279 --> 00:08:43.519 That's the first part. 00:08:44.039 --> 00:08:50.559 But part of idolatry is also looking to enthrone ourselves, isn't it? 00:08:50.720 --> 00:08:51.539 Think about that. 00:08:51.720 --> 00:08:58.779 Before you bow to another idol, another king, you are putting yourself on the throne. 00:08:59.159 --> 00:09:03.339 It's really evident in this passage because part of the irony here when they say, 00:09:03.340 --> 00:09:11.200 we have no king but Caesar, is that these Jewish leaders actually despised Caesar. 00:09:11.860 --> 00:09:12.960 And Pilate knew it. 00:09:13.660 --> 00:09:20.259 Caesar kept them under his thumb, the Gentile ruler of their promised land. 00:09:22.040 --> 00:09:23.180 What are they really saying? 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:28.060 What they're really saying is that they have no king at all. 00:09:28.660 --> 00:09:31.240 No king but themselves. 00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:35.100 They're rejecting the messianic hope. 00:09:35.639 --> 00:09:39.659 The promise of a king coming to deliver God's people. 00:09:40.060 --> 00:09:45.060 They will bow, they've decided, to whoever or whatever gets them what they want right now. 00:09:45.799 --> 00:09:48.060 Keeps them in control for now. 00:09:48.440 --> 00:09:49.779 They want that king. 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:51.799 They're in charge. 00:09:51.799 --> 00:10:04.519 But this moment, these fateful words where his own did not receive him have been building for centuries, for generations, haven't they? 00:10:06.019 --> 00:10:10.679 I think that's part of why they're so often on our hearts and our lips too. 00:10:11.259 --> 00:10:13.859 We love to be on the throne, don't we? 00:10:13.860 --> 00:10:16.700 Don't we enjoy being in control? 00:10:18.220 --> 00:10:20.000 Well, part of that's understandable. 00:10:20.860 --> 00:10:26.500 All the way back in the beginning, God the king creates man and woman in his image. 00:10:26.919 --> 00:10:33.220 And he tells us that part of that reflecting the image of the king is to rule on his behalf. 00:10:33.440 --> 00:10:35.120 To be vice regents. 00:10:35.519 --> 00:10:37.180 That's what he made us for. 00:10:37.179 --> 00:10:43.519 To rule the way that Yahweh, the true king, would rule 00:11:11.720 Psalm 29. 00:11:12.259 --> 00:11:15.600 The Lord Yahweh sits enthroned over the flood. 00:11:15.960 --> 00:11:19.139 The Lord sits enthroned as king forever. 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:20.580 rejecting the true king for our own idols. 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:23.699 Looking to what looks good to us, right? 00:12:24.039 --> 00:12:25.759 What will give us life? 00:12:26.079 --> 00:12:27.139 Adam and Eve, right? 00:12:27.139 --> 00:12:31.480 The nation of Israel at the time of the judges. 00:12:31.819 --> 00:12:33.580 Another great example of this. 00:12:33.720 --> 00:12:35.879 Gideon rescued God's people. 00:12:36.019 --> 00:12:37.980 God sent him as a judge to deliver them. 00:12:38.240 --> 00:12:40.899 And they wanted to make this flawed man their king. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:42.379 Gideon said, no way. 00:12:42.939 --> 00:12:45.179 Gideon said to them, I will not rule over you. 00:12:45.379 --> 00:12:47.100 My son will not rule over you. 00:12:47.399 --> 00:12:49.299 The Lord will rule over you. 00:12:49.419 --> 00:12:50.620 You have a king. 00:12:50.139 --> 00:12:50.639 You have a king. 00:12:50.639 --> 00:12:59.039 But the problem was they had quit acknowledging Yahweh's rule. 00:13:00.120 --> 00:13:06.980 The whole book of Judges says over and over, in those days, there was no king in Israel. 00:13:06.980 --> 00:13:12.159 Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 00:13:13.420 --> 00:13:15.840 Man, we go there quickly these days, don't we? 00:13:16.460 --> 00:13:21.740 I know who I am, how I should live, what I want. 00:13:22.139 --> 00:13:23.039 I know that. 00:13:23.039 --> 00:13:36.679 When the Israelites do ask God for a king like the nations, Samuel, their last judge, is distraught. 00:13:37.219 --> 00:13:39.419 And God says to Samuel, hey, don't take it personally. 00:13:39.419 --> 00:13:43.319 Obey the voice of the people and all they say to you. 00:13:43.399 --> 00:13:45.059 For they have not rejected you. 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:47.620 You're not the king, Samuel. 00:13:47.899 --> 00:13:52.839 They have rejected me from being king over them. 00:13:52.879 --> 00:13:56.860 They want a king that they can see and they can follow wherever he leads. 00:13:57.019 --> 00:13:59.579 They don't care if he leads them after Yahweh or not. 00:14:00.120 --> 00:14:02.659 See, they were made to look like Yahweh. 00:14:02.899 --> 00:14:06.379 But they were longing to look like the nations. 00:14:06.379 --> 00:14:09.480 To be remade in their image. 00:14:10.700 --> 00:14:15.000 They reject Yahweh and they get Saul. 00:14:17.659 --> 00:14:24.379 When that doesn't go well, God says, look, if anyone's going to be king of my people, 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:29.820 the point will be to point them to me with your whole heart. 00:14:30.120 --> 00:14:32.840 Point them away from the idols of the nations around them. 00:14:32.840 --> 00:14:36.639 Remind them to rule over my world in my image. 00:14:36.960 --> 00:14:40.300 Show them, king, what the true king looks like. 00:14:40.379 --> 00:14:45.639 And so David and Solomon come to the throne and it's repeatedly called the throne of Yahweh. 00:14:46.100 --> 00:14:48.680 The throne of the Lord that they will sit on. 00:14:50.420 --> 00:14:56.920 And many, many evil kings, if you've read through those books before, follow them. 00:14:57.340 --> 00:14:59.920 They lead the people away from God. 00:14:59.919 --> 00:15:05.019 Even many of those kings setting up new idols for the people to worship. 00:15:06.179 --> 00:15:08.679 That's what happens all through the history of the Old Testament. 00:15:09.139 --> 00:15:14.240 When you reject Yahweh, like we read earlier in Jeremiah chapter 2, 00:15:15.599 --> 00:15:18.000 you look somewhere at the description of a pretty good king. 00:15:38.840 --> 00:15:39.580 There are some. 00:15:40.860 --> 00:15:41.419 Hezekiah. 00:15:42.200 --> 00:15:43.139 2 Kings 18. 00:15:43.399 --> 00:15:44.740 What does a good king do? 00:15:44.800 --> 00:15:46.000 He tears down idols. 00:15:47.019 --> 00:15:48.399 He rules God's way. 00:15:48.720 --> 00:15:50.620 He points the people to Yahweh. 00:15:50.940 --> 00:15:52.960 And to hope in his promises. 00:15:52.960 --> 00:15:57.300 Because what's clear throughout these centuries in the Psalms and the Prophets, 00:15:57.400 --> 00:15:58.940 over and over so many examples, 00:15:59.280 --> 00:16:03.259 is that Yahweh is going to send a king for his people. 00:16:03.340 --> 00:16:04.139 There's someone coming. 00:16:05.240 --> 00:16:07.420 A king who will never leave the throne. 00:16:07.940 --> 00:16:10.759 A king who will perfectly reflect God's image. 00:16:10.960 --> 00:16:15.860 A king who will destroy every idol and any other pretender to the throne of God 00:16:15.860 --> 00:16:19.440 and lead God's people in life everlasting. 00:16:21.480 --> 00:16:27.180 That is where the term Messiah, anointed one, comes from. Yet on this night, 00:16:52.279 --> 00:16:57.419 when Jesus stands before them in a purple robe, 00:16:58.860 --> 00:17:01.740 with a bloodied face, 00:17:03.139 --> 00:17:05.500 topped by a crown of thorns, 00:17:06.500 --> 00:17:11.380 they reject messianic hope as well. 00:17:12.680 --> 00:17:14.000 He came to his own. 00:17:14.000 --> 00:17:18.680 People who grew up hearing about him all the history of rejecting kings, 00:17:48.100 --> 00:17:48.940 their tea, 00:17:49.340 --> 00:17:50.320 and their taxes. 00:17:51.320 --> 00:17:52.340 We're proud. 00:17:52.339 --> 00:18:00.220 And we have a rich history of enthroning ourselves as king, 00:18:00.359 --> 00:18:00.720 don't we? 00:18:02.519 --> 00:18:05.240 Maybe we should be less proud of that part. 00:18:05.240 --> 00:18:14.359 But I think that you and I inherit that heart from our spiritual fathers and our cultural fathers. 00:18:14.359 --> 00:18:16.859 Just think for a minute. 00:18:16.859 --> 00:18:19.699 I bow to idols all the 00:18:37.059 --> 00:18:39.539 in my controlling what they do 00:18:39.539 --> 00:18:41.079 and where they go 00:18:41.079 --> 00:18:42.380 and what they believe. 00:18:42.380 --> 00:18:46.000 I reject the messianic hope 00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:48.600 that Jesus alone rescues them 00:18:48.600 --> 00:18:51.700 when I quit praying so much for them 00:18:51.700 --> 00:18:56.120 and I start pressuring them to perform the way I want them to. 00:18:57.120 --> 00:18:58.620 God, forgive me. 00:18:59.640 --> 00:19:00.860 That's idolatry. 00:19:03.380 --> 00:19:07.080 We reject Jesus as king by searching
