unchanging nature and character of God. 00:01:35.000 --> 00:01:40.519 And that will be what will bring blessing to St. Columba's in the days and weeks and 00:01:40.519 --> 00:01:42.239 months that lie ahead. 00:01:42.239 --> 00:01:48.000 So I want to look at four, you could do this in so many different ways and every way, we'll 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:52.759 only scratch the surface of this verse even of Scripture. 00:01:52.760 --> 00:01:57.560 We're going to highlight four truths that are very significant and very important, critical 00:01:57.560 --> 00:01:58.560 I think. 00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:03.160 They've always been critical, whether they were in 1st century Rome, this new church, 00:02:03.160 --> 00:02:08.480 this early church, this church that was facing difficulties in persecution and opposition, or 00:02:08.480 --> 00:02:14.120 whether it's 21st century in Edinburgh where nobody cares that we're meeting, the Christian 00:02:14.120 --> 00:02:19.640 church is irrelevant in the city where barriers and concerts and everything else will be more 00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:23.759 significant to the city around St. Columba's than the gospel. 00:02:23.759 --> 00:02:29.399 But nonetheless, as we've been singing and praying and considering, we come before the 00:02:29.399 --> 00:02:31.399 living God who never changes. 00:02:31.399 --> 00:02:34.759 The first thing, so I'm going to say four things. 00:02:34.759 --> 00:02:38.279 First thing, it matters what you believe. 00:02:38.279 --> 00:02:42.560 Second thing is, it matters that you believe with others. 00:02:42.560 --> 00:02:47.319 The third thing is your faith is as public as your body. 00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:50.319 And the fourth thing is true worship is all of life. 00:02:50.319 --> 00:02:55.919 Okay, so that's the four things we're going to look at briefly, I hope, this morning. 00:02:55.919 --> 00:02:59.439 First thing is therefore, it matters what you believe. 00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:04.199 And the significance of that comes from that word which in some translations comes first 00:03:04.199 --> 00:03:08.959 in the chapter and in this translation, it's the fifth word, it's the word therefore, it's 00:03:08.959 --> 00:03:09.959 a link word. 00:03:09.959 --> 00:03:13.400 I appeal to you, therefore brothers, it's a hinge word. 00:03:13.400 --> 00:03:18.840 And you see the word therefore, you know that it's a hinge word and that it's linking 00:03:18.840 --> 00:03:22.360 what has come before with what's going to come afterwards. 00:03:22.360 --> 00:03:27.159 It's like the button of a coat that brings both sides of the coat together and closes 00:03:27.159 --> 00:03:31.319 it beautifully in order and symmetry. 00:03:31.319 --> 00:03:36.879 And so Paul is saying, because of what I've been saying in the first eleven chapters of 00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:42.159 Romans, therefore this is the practical outworking of these truths. 00:03:42.159 --> 00:03:44.400 This cause and effect. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:49.439 He's saying this is, the first eleven chapters are all about truth and theology. 00:03:49.439 --> 00:03:56.639 And now he says, he's been teaching about Jesus and the gospel and the nature of salvation, 00:03:56.639 --> 00:04:03.280 meaty theology, chunky, meaty, tough theology about God and about the gospel and about the 00:04:03.280 --> 00:04:04.280 church. 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:10.599 And he's saying, because of these things, therefore this is how you live. 00:04:10.599 --> 00:04:16.719 And he's making that inexorable link between what we believe and how we live. 00:04:16.719 --> 00:04:20.519 So it matters, he says, what we believe. 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:22.719 And we don't have time, of course, to read the first eleven chapters. 00:04:22.719 --> 00:04:24.120 You can go home and read them. 00:04:24.120 --> 00:04:27.560 And I know you've read them before, many of you. 00:04:27.560 --> 00:04:33.199 But he kind of summarizes the whole gospel message in these eleven chapters, really strong 00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:35.600 meaty theology. 00:04:35.600 --> 00:04:42.360 And basically what Paul is saying is if you don't know these things, you'll never grow. 00:04:42.360 --> 00:04:43.800 You'll never grow as a Christian. 00:04:43.800 --> 00:04:50.439 If you have known real interest in the theology, which simply means the knowledge of God, if 00:04:50.439 --> 00:04:55.320 we don't have any interest in the knowledge of God, how He reveals Himself, how He explains 00:04:55.320 --> 00:05:00.360 Himself, how He describes Himself and His work and His salvation on our behalf, then 00:05:00.360 --> 00:05:07.319 we will never grow, because we will find the more we fall into seeking the character and 00:05:07.319 --> 00:05:15.439 nature of God, we will be challenged greatly about our understanding of the world and understanding 00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:22.439 of our own hearts and our understanding of the living and miraculous God. 00:05:22.439 --> 00:05:26.120 He will turn our thinking upside down. 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:33.600 He will primarily make clear, as he does in these early chapters of Romans, that we deserve 00:05:33.600 --> 00:05:44.160 nothing from God but His eternal wrath, eternal judgment, even in the best of our motives and 00:05:44.160 --> 00:05:51.439 the best of our actions, there is an impurity that leaves us short of the perfect standard 00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:54.439 of the living God. 00:05:54.439 --> 00:05:58.360 And it's that terrible reality about our hearts. 00:05:58.360 --> 00:06:05.680 But it's the glorious truth also that in Christ we have absolutely everything. 00:06:05.680 --> 00:06:13.600 We have renewal, we have forgiveness, we have a new heart and new life and new future that's 00:06:13.600 --> 00:06:22.000 unimaginably secure and glorious even as we grow older and become more wrinkly and weaker 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:25.199 and eventually die. 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:31.000 We're becoming more alive and we go and live with Him in His presence forever. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:35.199 And that is the truth of Scripture. 00:06:35.199 --> 00:06:41.519 And the more that we know that, the more we understand that, the more therefore we will 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:45.639 be able to give our lives in living sacrifice to Him. 00:06:45.639 --> 00:06:49.160 So you know, when we speak about the spiritual disciplines, which we do here and we've got 00:06:49.160 --> 00:06:54.640 the grace groups to encourage that as well as the coming together and worship and fellowship 00:06:54.640 --> 00:06:57.800 and hospitality and all these things. 00:06:57.800 --> 00:07:03.840 Spiritual disciplines, it's that daily prayer and it's that daily reading of Scripture is 00:07:03.840 --> 00:07:10.320 getting to know the truth and remaining in the truth and being plugged into the truth 00:07:10.320 --> 00:07:16.040 because that transforms who we are, it transforms how we think as we get to know Jesus Christ 00:07:16.040 --> 00:07:17.040 better. 00:07:17.040 --> 00:07:23.480 The prayer is our response to that, the prayer is our coming to Him in need and is building 00:07:23.480 --> 00:07:25.920 that relationship with Him. 00:07:25.920 --> 00:07:32.680 Therefore, and it's interesting isn't it really that He sums up the first eleven chapters. 00:07:32.680 --> 00:07:37.040 You read these chapters and there's quite tough stuff going on in these chapters. 00:07:37.040 --> 00:07:42.200 He summarizes it in this verse basically, the mercies of God. 00:07:42.200 --> 00:07:46.720 That's how He summarizes all that truth in the first eleven chapters of Romans. 00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:53.600 It's God's, therefore He says by the mercies of God and He's thinking back to these eleven 00:07:53.600 --> 00:07:56.240 chapters. 00:07:56.240 --> 00:08:03.200 It sums up the motive behind all we do, all we are, all we think. 00:08:03.200 --> 00:08:06.440 It's God's great mercy in Christ. 00:08:06.440 --> 00:08:11.960 It's His sacrificial and unending love that we will celebrate in the Lord's Supper shortly. 00:08:11.959 --> 00:08:18.039 And He is the one who swallowed God's perfect wrath against us and took the punishment that 00:08:18.039 --> 00:08:19.039 we deserve. 00:08:19.039 --> 00:08:27.000 It was meted out on Him because He wanted us back, because He wanted us in relationship 00:08:27.000 --> 00:08:28.919 with Him. 00:08:28.919 --> 00:08:32.159 He is in effect the living sacrifice. 00:08:32.159 --> 00:08:38.600 He died and He rose again because He wants us back in relationship with Him. 00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:44.960 He doesn't want us separated from Him and in that place of darkness and danger. 00:08:44.960 --> 00:08:49.440 It's free, it's full, it's, there is no alternative. 00:08:49.440 --> 00:08:53.800 And that's why Paul is so passionate about what he says. 00:08:53.800 --> 00:08:56.120 He got that. 00:08:56.120 --> 00:08:57.639 Absolutely got that. 00:08:57.639 --> 00:08:59.800 It's all about God's mercy. 00:08:59.800 --> 00:09:03.720 And if you're an unbeliever here today and it's great to see you if you are and we're 00:09:03.720 --> 00:09:08.759 delighted that you're here, but can I say that even your breath today, your life today, 00:09:08.759 --> 00:09:14.840 your relationships today, your history up till now today has been because of the mercy 00:09:14.840 --> 00:09:19.960 of God that He's brought you here, the laughter, the love, the gifts, the relationships, all 00:09:19.960 --> 00:09:26.519 because of His mercy, all because He wants you to consider His Son Jesus Christ and the 00:09:26.519 --> 00:09:27.519 salvation that He offers. 00:09:27.519 --> 00:09:29.519 And I hope you will do that today. 00:09:29.519 --> 00:09:30.879 So it matters what you believe. 00:09:30.879 --> 00:09:34.600 All of us need to be reminded of that in our lives. 00:09:34.600 --> 00:09:39.720 And the second thing is it matters that you believe with others. 00:09:39.720 --> 00:09:42.519 It really matters that you believe the gospel with others. 00:09:42.519 --> 00:09:48.120 I therefore appeal to you, brothers, He says, brothers and sisters, the church family, it's 00:09:48.120 --> 00:09:53.840 a letter, a public letter written to a church that's planted in Rome. 00:09:53.840 --> 00:10:00.559 And Paul was clearly committed and passionate in his relationship with this church. 00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:03.559 If you spin forward to chapter 16, you'll see that. 00:10:03.559 --> 00:10:08.119 It's one of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible where he just lists all the people that 00:10:08.119 --> 00:10:11.159 he loves and cares for, ask for them, ask for them. 00:10:11.159 --> 00:10:13.159 Could you remember me to them? 00:10:13.159 --> 00:10:16.879 But he's only been there a short time and yet he says there's great relationship with 00:10:16.879 --> 00:10:24.119 all these people in the church because he knows and he realizes that belief is something 00:10:24.119 --> 00:10:27.519 that is important to be shared and to be lived out with others. 00:10:27.519 --> 00:10:32.960 There's a commonality in our faith in Jesus Christ. 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:35.439 It's hugely significant. 00:10:35.439 --> 00:10:39.679 We are royal priesthood, Peter says in 1 Peter 2. 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:43.319 We all have the same access to the Father through Jesus Christ. 00:10:43.319 --> 00:10:50.559 And that is tremendously significant, tremendously important for us to consider that it matters 00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:54.120 that we believe with others. 00:10:54.120 --> 00:10:57.799 Think around you today in St. Columba's. 00:10:57.799 --> 00:11:01.879 People who have never met one another before, people of different races, different characters, 00:11:01.879 --> 00:11:06.560 different backgrounds, people of different temperaments, likes and dislikes. 00:11:06.560 --> 00:11:11.759 But we're called to be a family together and we're called to live out this Christian life 00:11:11.759 --> 00:11:17.120 and this truth and be living sacrifices together, not simply alone. 00:11:17.120 --> 00:11:20.680 We'll come back to that in a little while. 00:11:20.679 --> 00:11:25.039 Now the question goes out, what place does the church have in your life, in your Christian 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:26.799 life, the church family? 00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:32.120 I don't mean the church service per se, that's an outworking of the church family, but I 00:11:32.120 --> 00:11:35.879 mean the church as a family, as a people. 00:11:35.879 --> 00:11:38.399 What place does the church have in your life? 00:11:38.399 --> 00:11:43.599 It's tremendously significant because it matters not only what we believe but that you believe 00:11:43.599 --> 00:11:46.919 with others. 00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:52.759 And Paul recognized that and he had a passionate concern for that reality. 00:11:52.759 --> 00:11:54.599 He says, I appeal to you. 00:11:54.599 --> 00:11:56.639 He says, I urge you. 00:11:56.639 --> 00:12:01.479 This wasn't some kind of dispassionate lecturer at the front giving some kind of intellectual, 00:12:01.479 --> 00:12:04.079 theological reason why it's good to be together. 00:12:04.079 --> 00:12:05.479 He's passionate. 00:12:05.479 --> 00:12:06.879 He's urging them. 00:12:06.879 --> 00:12:09.079 He's appealing to them. 00:12:09.079 --> 00:12:15.439 With brotherly love and friendship, the word behind that is used here for appeal is a kind 00:12:15.440 --> 00:12:22.600 of powerful, persuasive, personal plea of a defending lawyer before a jury. 00:12:22.600 --> 00:12:30.400 You know, you see them in the films, passionately defend their client because it's real and 00:12:30.400 --> 00:12:34.320 it's significant to them, or maybe isn't but that's their job. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:36.400 But for us it is real. 00:12:36.400 --> 00:12:43.400 And he's able to say what he can say because he loves them and because there's relationship 00:12:43.399 --> 00:12:48.679 with them and there's a spiritual openness and an accountability of love and care. 00:12:48.679 --> 00:12:52.840 So he can be passionate as he appeals and he can speak in that way. 00:12:52.840 --> 00:12:59.519 Now, I think that's one thing we need to work on in St. Columbus. fellowship, we're great at friendship, we're great at talking about the 00:13:06.759 --> 00:13:11.519 weather and the football and the traffic and what it's like to be in the high street and 00:13:11.519 --> 00:13:13.079 everything else. 00:13:13.080 --> 00:13:14.080 What do we talk about? 00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:16.520 Are we accountable to one another spiritually? 00:13:16.520 --> 00:13:21.600 Can we appeal to one another as brothers and sisters in Christ about our spiritual lives? 00:13:21.600 --> 00:13:25.040 Is there that openness and intimacy and trust and honesty? 00:13:25.040 --> 00:13:29.800 I think we always are working on that as believers. 00:13:29.800 --> 00:13:32.080 It's not a critical statement. 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:35.720 It's a reality for us that we're a growing community and it's something that is good 00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:41.960 to work on because our commitment and our involvement is always, it must be more than 00:13:41.960 --> 00:13:44.920 turning up simply on a Sunday. 00:13:44.920 --> 00:13:49.120 It's about doing life and being accountable to one another. 00:13:49.120 --> 00:13:53.480 And it's not about looking at others thing is that your faith is as, it's a strange thing to say maybe, your faith is 00:14:04.920 --> 00:14:07.680 as public as your body. 00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:13.120 Your faith is as public as your body by the mercies of God, He says, to present your bodies. 00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:16.279 He doesn't say present your brain. 00:14:16.279 --> 00:14:18.759 He doesn't say present your soul. 00:14:18.759 --> 00:14:20.120 He says present your bodies. 00:14:20.120 --> 00:14:25.439 And that's a very deliberate statement by Paul into the Greco-Roman world in which he's 00:14:25.439 --> 00:14:31.559 living where the background thinking and the secularity of their thinking was very much 00:14:31.559 --> 00:14:32.559 that the body was evil. 00:14:32.559 --> 00:14:36.639 And it was all about what was internal and all about your soul and all about having special 00:14:36.639 --> 00:14:39.559 spiritual insights. 00:14:39.559 --> 00:14:43.279 And it's very much today for us, it's countering the idea that our faith is simply something 00:14:43.279 --> 00:14:47.759 private, something just mystical. 00:14:47.759 --> 00:14:52.439 And it's a spiritual lay-by in our life that we eventually, you know, we go into now and 00:14:52.439 --> 00:14:58.120 again to get some, it's like going to a petrol station for fuel. 00:14:58.120 --> 00:15:02.759 We go in occasionally and we get stacked up again and then we live our lives. 00:15:02.759 --> 00:15:13.279 And I think sometimes we add that, I add into that misunderstanding. 00:15:13.279 --> 00:15:17.240 Sometimes I think by the way we often talk about our heart, the importance of our heart 00:15:17.240 --> 00:15:23.399 being right and having a heart relationship with God, which is absolutely true of course, 00:15:23.399 --> incarnate Christians, just as God was incarnate in Jesus Christ. 00:15:46.799 --> 00:15:54.240 We are to incarnate what is private and personal to us in our bodies, in our life. 00:15:54.240 --> that we incarnate our faith. 00:16:21.399 --> 00:16:31.399 People are saying, our faith is to be seen, to be heard, to be witnessed. 00:16:31.399 --> 00:16:34.399 With our eyes and with our ears, it's to be tangible. 00:16:34.399 --> 00:16:37.079 This is a great earthy verse. 00:16:37.079 --> 00:16:42.039 It's saying that wherever you go, people see your body, isn't it? 00:16:42.039 --> 00:16:43.039 That's what they see. 00:16:43.039 --> 00:16:44.039 They see your face. 00:16:44.039 --> 00:16:45.039 They see your eyes. 00:16:45.039 --> 00:16:48.279 They see your form. 00:16:48.279 --> 00:16:52.000 And where they see that, they are to see Christ. 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:58.439 In everything that we do, what we say, how we respond, how we react, how we think, how 00:16:58.439 --> 00:17:03.879 we behave, it's all related to our bodies and where to take Christ with us. 00:17:03.879 --> 00:17:09.359 And that is what He really means when He talks about being living sacrifices. 00:17:09.359 --> 00:17:14.359 Christ ultimately became the only living sacrifice. 00:17:14.359 --> 00:17:21.119 He died and He rose again and the lamb at the center of the throne as the marks of the 00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:23.639 crucified one. 00:17:23.639 --> 00:17:28.199 But we are to take this imagery here. 00:17:28.199 --> 00:17:31.119 We're not to be sacrificial. 00:17:31.119 --> 00:17:35.719 We're not to sacrifice something every now and again. 00:17:35.719 --> 00:17:40.319 Our lives are not to give off the odd sacrifice. 00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:43.479 We are to be one. 00:17:43.480 --> 00:17:46.360 Something about us were to be a living sacrifice. 00:17:46.360 --> 00:17:52.360 It's temple terminology that Paul is using here that would have filtered right through 00:17:52.360 --> 00:17:56.519 all the Old Testament and all the sacrificial offerings that were made. 00:17:56.519 --> 00:18:04.599 And he's speaking here about the offering of the whole lamb, the whole burnt offering 00:18:04.599 --> 00:18:12.360 where it was given to God in thanksgiving with a deliberate intentionality of consecrating 00:18:12.360 --> 00:18:13.360 everything. 00:18:13.359 --> 00:18:17.759 There's a symbol of consecrating everything to the Lord, giving everything to Him as a 00:18:17.759 --> 00:18:19.879 living sacrifice. 00:18:19.879 --> 00:18:21.679 Christ was the burnt off, Christ died. 00:18:21.679 --> 00:18:23.159 He was the sacrificial sin offering. 00:18:23.159 --> 00:18:32.479 But this is the life we live in response to what Christ has done for us. 00:18:32.479 --> 00:18:37.119 Jesus speaks about it in Luke 9, 23, 24 where He says, whoever wants to be my disciple must 00:18:37.119 --> 00:18:41.119 deny him, take up their cross and daily and follow me. 00:18:41.119 --> 00:18:46.279 Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will 00:18:46.279 --> 00:18:47.279 save it. 00:18:47.279 --> 00:18:49.439 That's the great paradox of the gospel, isn't it? 00:18:49.439 --> 00:18:52.359 We have to be living sacrifices. 00:18:52.359 --> 00:18:58.479 The Holy Spirit in us is what the interesting thing is, the Holy --> 00:21:46.720 And the great thing is all we're asked to do is, when all the brutal honesty that we 00:21:46.720 --> 00:21:50.839 can muster, go back to God and ask for His grace and forgiveness.
