A minister several years ago, Scotty Smith, from Nashville, Tennessee, 00:00:22.280 --> 00:00:29.980 came and spoke at a vision weekend for the church planting group within the church. 00:00:29.980 --> 00:00:39.299 Scotty just has a remarkable way of capturing truth in a way that's both personal and powerful. 00:00:39.299 --> 00:00:46.359 And one of his devotionals, which I read in my class last semester, looked at Romans 15 00:00:46.359 --> 00:00:51.100 and he highlighted these three descriptors of God. 00:00:51.100 --> 00:00:57.939 The God of endurance and encouragement, the God of hope, and the God of peace. 00:00:57.939 --> 00:01:02.820 Because you see, how you see God is critical. 00:01:02.820 --> 00:01:05.060 Our understanding of ourself, of course, is important. 00:01:05.060 --> 00:01:10.259 I think it was John Calvin who said, really, the two great pieces of knowledge are this, 00:01:10.259 --> 00:01:13.099 knowledge of God and knowledge of self. 00:01:13.099 --> 00:01:16.519 And we really can't have either in isolation. 00:01:16.519 --> 00:01:20.920 We can't really understand God or ourselves in isolation. 00:01:20.920 --> 00:01:27.320 But how you understand God will shape, will shape your life, will shape your worship, will 00:01:27.320 --> 00:01:28.519 shape your service. 00:01:28.519 --> 00:01:34.939 C.S. Lewis once said, I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen. 00:01:34.939 --> 00:01:42.159 Not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. 00:01:42.159 --> 00:01:48.799 You see, if you believe that God is distant, then your experience will be of a God who is 00:01:48.799 --> 00:01:49.200 remote. 00:01:49.840 --> 00:01:57.439 If you believe that God is harsh, your experience will then be shaped by the God who seems to 00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:00.199 be judgmental and condemnatory. 00:02:00.199 --> 00:02:06.560 If you believe that God is indifferent, you'll go through life thinking, doesn't know, doesn't 00:02:06.560 --> 00:02:07.819 care, maybe both. 00:02:07.819 --> 00:02:16.680 If you believe that God is near, you will see God at all points of want to discourage. 00:03:27.740 --> 00:03:34.140 He wants to equip the audience there and now for the realities of life. 00:03:34.900 --> 00:03:37.879 I don't know about you, but life is tough. 00:03:38.699 --> 00:03:39.640 Life is unexpected. 00:03:40.539 --> 00:03:42.280 Things happen that you cannot predict. 00:03:43.199 --> 00:03:48.379 But we have a God who is dependable, reliable, --> 00:05:47.540 He said, 00:05:47.540 --> 00:06:12.300 I think the author of this letter was a man who was an enthusiast. 00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:16.000 A man who had a mission and a man who had a message. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:19.379 He could summarize his message quite succinctly. 00:06:19.939 --> 00:06:20.259 He said, 00:06:20.519 --> 00:06:22.000 We preach Christ crucified. 00:06:22.180 --> 00:06:23.040 That was his message. 00:06:23.639 --> 00:06:26.660 And his mission was to tell people the message. 00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:31.899 So we have an enthusiast telling us of encouragement. 00:06:32.819 --> 00:06:34.699 Now, as you read through the scriptures, 00:06:35.259 --> 00:06:38.720 the Bible tells us that God by his spirit gives gifts. 00:06:39.160 --> 00:06:40.600 He gives gifts to his people. 00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:47.700 And we have particular gifts and particular aptitudes that he gives each one of us. 00:06:48.500 --> 00:06:52.120 And in fact, the gift of encouragement is a spiritual gift. 00:06:52.900 --> 00:06:55.100 However, I've searched the scriptures. 00:06:55.340 --> 00:06:55.720 I did that. 00:06:55.820 --> 00:06:57.100 I just double checked this morning. 00:07:29.500 --> 00:07:31.360 Well, he was gifted intellectually. 00:07:31.560 --> 00:07:32.160 But he was not. 00:07:32.320 --> 00:07:36.480 He didn't have the advantages that most people would have thought, this man is for me. 00:08:59.819 --> 00:09:00.980 I'm going to be for him. 00:09:01.559 --> 00:09:06.699 So when the Sunday school teacher later came by this young man's place of work, the shoe shop, 00:09:07.340 --> 00:09:10.559 you see, the Sunday school teacher was concerned that his class, 00:09:10.939 --> 00:09:12.679 they might have known a lot of stuff. 00:09:12.919 --> 00:09:14.319 But they didn't know Jesus. 00:09:15.139 --> 00:09:18.000 You see, Paul wants to teach us a lot of stuff, yes. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.360 But above all, he wants us to know Jesus. 00:09:21.200 --> 00:09:24.440 You see, you can know a lot of stuff about Jesus, but not know Jesus. 00:09:24.899 --> 00:09:27.259 But if you know him, you know all that you need to know. 00:09:28.059 --> 00:09:31.980 So Kimball went to the shoe shop and told this young man about Jesus. 00:09:33.080 --> 00:09:34.679 And he was converted then and there. 00:09:35.179 --> 00:09:36.059 His life was young man grew into an older man. 00:09:46.579 --> 00:09:47.759 But it's interesting. 00:09:48.500 --> 00:09:50.319 D.L. Spurgeon, another great preacher of a different age. 00:13:58.020 --> 00:13:59.940 He says, without Christ there is no hope. 00:14:00.600 --> 00:14:03.360 You see, endurance without Christ is no endurance. 00:14:03.520 --> 00:14:05.340 Encouragement without Christ is no encouragement. 00:14:05.700 --> 00:14:07.400 Hope without Christ is no hope. 00:14:08.040 --> 00:14:14.540 So even when the Apostle Paul is not specifically referencing the life and death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:14:14.539 --> 00:14:16.860 We know that that's his focus. 00:14:17.259 --> 00:14:18.199 He's already told us. 00:14:18.319 --> 00:14:19.779 We preach Christ and him crucified. 00:14:20.599 --> 00:14:24.559 You know, he is determined to know nothing but Christ crucified. 00:14:25.240 --> 00:14:27.659 That's the sum and substance of his message. 00:14:28.139 --> 00:14:29.480 So we have hope. 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:38.439 And this hope is intended for people who are surrounded by situations that appear to be hopeless. 00:14:38.440 --> 00:14:44.620 You see, again, a previous commentator. 00:14:44.980 --> 00:14:47.060 You know, I quoted C.S. Lewis to begin with. 00:14:47.120 --> 00:14:49.320 C.S. Lewis, again, had a great fluency of words. 00:14:49.480 --> 00:14:55.740 G.K. Chesterton was another commentator who could put words together quite well. 00:14:56.180 --> 00:14:59.320 And he says, hope means hoping when things are hopeless. 00:15:00.080 --> 00:15:01.660 Or it is no virtue at all. 00:15:01.659 --> 00:15:06.199 As long as matters are really hopeful, hope is mere flattery or platitude. 00:15:06.779 --> 00:15:10.919 It's only when everything is hopeless that hope begins to be a strength. 00:15:11.779 --> 00:15:14.360 And I think what Paul is saying to the Christians in Rome, 00:15:16.059 --> 00:15:17.719 your situation is not good. 00:15:18.659 --> 00:15:20.459 Your prospects are not bright. 00:15:21.539 --> 00:15:25.779 Your future, humanly speaking, is insecure. 00:15:25.779 --> 00:15:31.299 He's not trying to tell them to pretend that things are different because things are tough. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:35.439 But he wants them to know that there is a God who is the God of hope. 00:15:35.779 --> 00:15:36.939 The God who brings hope. 00:15:37.240 --> 00:15:38.379 The God who brings joy. 00:15:38.500 --> 00:15:39.699 The God who brings peace. 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:44.959 Because these characteristics and qualities are not circumstantial. 00:15:45.339 --> 00:15:47.759 They are not dependent upon a situation. 00:15:47.759 --> 00:15:56.319 So when you feel hopeless, that's when the God of hope begins to shine even you read the Bible, you'll see that the chapters are separated by big numbers, 15, 16. 00:16:37.639 --> 00:16:44.460 In the NIV that I'm reading here, we have a break at verse 13 and 14. 00:16:44.720 --> 00:16:46.980 Paul, the minister to the Gentiles. 00:16:47.480 --> 00:16:49.639 Now, these breaks are not in the original. 00:16:50.199 --> 00:16:53.699 And sometimes these breaks come at inopportune times. 00:16:54.179 --> 00:16:57.939 Because I think the break almost makes you pause after verse 13, 00:16:58.360 --> 00:17:01.759 take a new breath, and then start as if verse 14 is a new thought. 00:17:02.419 --> 00:17:05.279 But actually, verse 13 and verse 14 are intimately connected. 00:17:05.279 --> 00:17:07.519 Because verse 14 says, 00:17:07.639 --> 00:17:10.420 I myself am
