worker who is still acting like a uni student and sleeping in all morning. 00:02:06.219 --> 00:02:08.659 The adult who behaves like a child. 00:02:09.939 --> 00:02:13.500 There's tension when a person doesn't act like who they are. 00:02:14.580 --> 00:02:19.819 For those who follow Jesus, their status in life has changed. 00:02:20.580 --> 00:02:22.479 They've gone from death to life. 00:02:22.879 --> 00:02:28.219 From the power of sin to the power of God being set free by him. 00:02:28.219 --> 00:02:34.860 And yet, I wonder if we forget our status as God's children. 00:02:35.439 --> 00:02:38.860 And often run back to following our old ways. 00:02:39.620 --> 00:02:41.539 Do we forget who we are? 00:02:42.979 --> 00:02:45.159 We are in the book of Romans. 00:02:45.840 --> 00:02:51.960 And over the last few weeks, we've seen our desperate need for God to save us. 00:02:52.120 --> 00:02:55.400 And he does this through his wonderful grace to us. 00:02:56.120 --> 00:02:57.620 He chooses to forgive. 00:02:57.620 --> 00:03:02.060 He chooses to justify us because of his great love for us. 00:03:02.840 --> 00:03:04.599 It's called justification by faith. 00:03:04.840 --> 00:03:06.039 And we saw that last week. 00:03:06.159 --> 00:03:13.099 We've gone from having our head, Adam, to our new head, Jesus, as the one who represents us. 00:03:13.280 --> 00:03:16.240 And we have all the benefits through our new head, Jesus. 00:03:17.460 --> 00:03:21.020 And today, Paul shows us that we're not just saved. 00:03:21.200 --> 00:03:23.840 Our entire status has changed. 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:30.000 And so it's not right for us to go back to our old way of doing things, our old status. 00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:33.879 But instead, to be who we are because The first status change is from dead to alive. 00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:51.000 And the second status is of slaves to sin to slaves to God. 00:03:51.399 --> 00:03:54.199 Let me pray for us as we begin. 00:03:54.619 --> 00:03:58.459 Heavenly Father, we thank you for Romans chapter 6. 00:03:58.539 --> 00:04:00.039 We thank you for your word to us. 00:04:00.519 --> 00:04:04.560 And we ask that we would understand who we are as your children. 00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:08.740 And that we would continue to grow like Jesus. 00:04:09.460 --> 00:04:09.879 Amen. 00:04:11.580 --> 00:04:16.519 Paul has set out this wonderful picture that there is free grace. 00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:17.500 There is justification. 00:04:17.840 --> 00:04:19.720 You no longer need to work. 00:04:20.620 --> 00:04:24.220 You no longer need to follow a set of rules to be saved. 00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:27.819 In fact, that doesn't actually work to get saved. 00:04:27.939 --> 00:04:29.180 Instead, there is free grace. 00:04:29.180 --> 00:04:33.540 And now Paul answers a question on many people's minds. 00:04:34.140 --> 00:04:37.319 Well, if I'm saved, does it really matter what I do? 00:04:37.780 --> 00:04:39.700 has nothing to do with my salvation, 00:04:57.759 --> 00:04:59.860 then does it really matter what I do? 00:05:00.560 --> 00:05:03.080 Actually, if anything, the more I sin, 00:05:03.079 --> 00:05:14.519 I remember working through this thinking when I was younger 00:05:14.519 --> 00:05:17.860 and I've spoken to many people who've asked this question. 00:05:17.939 --> 00:05:20.219 Maybe you're asking this question today. 00:05:20.620 --> 00:05:23.299 Does it really matter what I'm doing 00:05:23.299 --> 00:05:25.740 if God is going to forgive me anyway? 00:05:26.939 --> 00:05:27.839 Paul responds. 00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:30.539 And he responds pretty strongly in verse 2. 00:05:31.639 --> 00:05:32.699 By no means. 00:05:33.879 --> 00:05:36.099 We are those who have died to sin. 00:05:36.179 --> 00:05:38.259 How can we live in it any longer? 00:05:39.419 --> 00:05:42.539 It's kind of hard to picture how strongly Paul would have written this. 00:05:42.659 --> 00:05:45.379 But, you know, I can imagine if he was writing this in text 00:05:45.379 --> 00:05:47.019 or writing it on a comment online, 00:05:47.099 --> 00:05:48.500 it would all be in caps. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:50.239 By no means. 00:05:50.240 --> 00:05:52.160 Don't do this. 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:55.460 We have died to sin. 00:05:56.160 --> 00:05:58.680 Sin and the Christian do not go together. 00:05:59.740 --> 00:06:02.939 Now, this doesn't mean that Christians do not sin. 00:06:03.079 --> 00:06:05.400 Some will suggest that Christians just no longer sin 00:06:05.400 --> 00:06:06.480 and that's not what Paul's saying. 00:06:07.079 --> 00:06:11.240 And he's not just saying that sin has no influence over us 00:06:11.240 --> 00:06:13.280 because sin continues to influence us. 00:06:14.019 --> 00:06:17.600 And it doesn't even just mean that sin is inappropriate for the Christian. 00:06:17.600 --> 00:06:23.580 And it's not even saying that the Christian is slowly moving away from sin. 00:06:23.860 --> 00:06:27.000 Paul says that we are dead to sin. 00:06:28.220 --> 00:06:30.560 The moment a person becomes a Christian, 00:06:30.960 --> 00:06:32.620 they have a new master. we were completely under the power of sin. 00:06:45.480 --> 00:06:46.660 We could not resist it. 00:06:46.660 --> 00:06:50.460 But now, sin cannot dominate the Christian. 00:06:51.120 --> 00:06:52.620 The Christian, under God's power, 00:06:52.700 --> 00:06:56.500 is able to resist and to rebel against the pull of sin. 00:06:57.820 --> 00:07:00.220 Paul says in Colossians chapter 1, 00:07:00.320 --> 00:07:02.900 that there's a new power at work in our lives. 00:07:03.720 --> 00:07:05.780 He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness 00:07:05.780 --> 00:07:09.180 and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 00:07:10.379 --> 00:07:12.140 Now, one way to understand this would be 00:07:12.139 --> 00:07:16.560 if there was a country that was under complete control 00:07:16.560 --> 00:07:17.759 by a wicked government. 00:07:17.759 --> 00:07:19.079 Okay? 00:07:19.219 --> 00:07:19.620 Go with me. 00:07:19.659 --> 00:07:22.099 So there's a country under complete control by a wicked government 00:07:22.099 --> 00:07:24.699 and a good army invades, 00:07:25.480 --> 00:07:27.019 throwing out the wicked force 00:07:27.019 --> 00:07:30.039 and giving back control of government 00:07:30.039 --> 00:07:31.879 and communication to the people. 00:07:31.879 --> 00:07:35.719 But the out-of-power soldiers, 00:07:36.339 --> 00:07:37.519 the wicked soldiers, 00:07:37.600 --> 00:07:38.719 they're still there, 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:40.560 but they've become a guerrilla force. 00:07:40.800 --> 00:07:43.399 So they're not in control of the military anymore, 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:45.480 but they are still hiding in the bushes. 00:07:45.480 --> 00:07:49.160 And this guerrilla force can create havoc 00:07:49.160 --> 00:07:50.620 for the rightful government. 00:07:51.200 --> 00:07:53.020 It can never take control again, 00:07:53.300 --> 00:07:55.720 but it can make things difficult. 00:07:56.900 --> 00:08:00.800 Being dead to sin means we don't have to obey it, 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:02.800 even if sin remains. 00:08:04.400 --> 00:08:07.280 And Paul explains this as being dead to sin 00:08:07.280 --> 00:08:09.460 and alive to Jesus in verse 3. 00:08:09.459 --> 00:08:13.199 Don't you know that all of us 00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:15.060 who were baptized into Christ Jesus 00:08:15.060 --> 00:08:17.539 were baptized into his death? 00:08:18.500 --> the Christian is made aware of Jesus' lordship 00:08:42.419 --> 00:08:43.579 and they follow him, 00:08:43.719 --> 00:08:44.739 at that moment, 00:08:45.239 --> 00:08:47.219 just in like chapter 5, 00:08:47.779 --> 00:08:49.259 Jesus becomes our head. 00:08:50.199 --> 00:08:53.259 And he died his death on his behalf for us. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:57.919 And his resurrection is our resurrection too. 00:08:59.459 --> 00:09:00.679 And so in verse 8, 00:09:00.739 --> 00:09:01.419 Paul can say, 00:09:01.819 --> 00:09:03.459 if we died with Christ, 00:09:03.559 --> 00:09:06.279 we believe we will live with him. 00:09:06.279 --> 00:09:10.519 All that is true of Jesus is true of the Christian. 00:09:11.279 --> 00:09:12.379 He died to sin. 00:09:12.899 --> 00:09:14.240 He was raised to life. 00:09:14.699 --> 00:09:17.959 And so the Christian right now is dead to sin 00:09:17.959 --> 00:09:20.439 and has a new life. 00:09:20.819 --> 00:09:22.980 It's a status change. 00:09:23.959 --> 00:09:26.360 The Christian's position in life has changed. 00:09:26.720 --> 00:09:29.120 The wicked government has been kicked out 00:09:29.120 --> 00:09:31.120 and there is a new power in control. when we sin, 00:09:47.740 --> 00:09:50.220 it doesn't change our status. 00:09:51.019 --> 00:09:54.199 We don't go back to being unforgiven, 00:09:54.339 --> 00:09:55.620 sinful before God. 00:09:55.899 --> 00:09:59.179 We continue as alive in God. 00:10:00.579 --> 00:10:03.500 But this is a wonderful reality that we can ignore, 00:10:04.059 --> 00:10:04.959 we can forget, 00:10:05.079 --> 00:10:06.100 we can lose sight of. 00:10:07.139 --> 00:10:10.459 And so Paul calls us to do what God does in verse 11. 00:10:10.460 --> 00:10:11.519 Paul says, 00:10:12.360 --> 00:10:14.900 count yourselves dead to sin, 00:10:15.460 --> 00:10:17.840 but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 00:10:19.440 --> 00:10:21.000 Earlier we saw in Romans 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:26.300 that God counted us righteous in Jesus. 00:10:27.200 --> 00:10:30.340 John used the illustration of doing a park run 00:10:30.340 --> 00:10:32.259 and the fastest runner, 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:36.000 their time was given to the slowest runner. 00:10:36.440 --> 00:10:38.080 There is a swap that is done 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:44.160 where God counts Jesus' perfect life for us. 00:10:45.180 --> 00:10:47.420 And so what Paul is calling us to do is 00:10:47.420 --> 00:10:50.460 to see ourselves as God sees us. 00:10:50.860 --> 00:10:53.040 God counts his righteousness for us 00:10:53.040 --> 00:10:57.500 and 00:12:08.739 --> 00:12:10.019 after the Civil War. 00:12:10.839 --> 00:12:12.739 Slavery had been abolished 00:12:12.739 --> 00:12:16.119 and all slaves, young and free, 00:12:16.519 --> 00:12:17.919 had been given their freedom. 00:12:19.199 --> 00:12:21.279 But there were many people who had endured 00:12:21.279 --> 00:12:24.179 long years of slavery 00:12:24.179 --> 00:12:26.759 and they found it very difficult 00:12:26.759 --> 00:12:28.299 to understand their new status. 00:12:28.979 --> 00:12:31.099 And so they heard that they were free. 00:12:33.299 --> 00:12:35.179 But they struggled to understand it. 00:12:35.359 --> 00:12:36.620 They struggled to realize it. 00:12:36.819 --> 00:12:39.739 And when they saw their old master coming to them, 00:12:40.059 --> 00:12:42.199 they began to can experience that in our lives, 00:12:52.519 --> 00:12:54.620 even when we are no longer a slave. 00:12:55.319 --> 00:12:56.419 Whatever you feel, 00:12:57.319 --> 00:12:59.319 whatever your experience may be, 00:12:59.639 --> 00:13:01.740 God tells us here, through his word, 00:13:01.740 --> 00:13:05.079 that we are no longer under the reign and rule of sin. 00:13:05.659 --> 00:13:06.839 And if I fall into sin, 00:13:07.339 --> 00:13:08.819 as I do, 00:13:09.919 --> 00:13:12.740 it is simply because I do not realize who I am. 00:13:15.299 --> 00:13:16.339 Verse 14, 00:13:16.439 --> 00:13:19.079 for sin shall no longer be your master 00:13:19.079 --> 00:13:22.039 because you are not under the law but under grace. 00:13:23.419 --> 00:13:25.379 And yet how often are we fearful of it? 00:13:26.459 --> 00:13:27.299 Stuck in it. 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:31.139 Not looking to our master who has set us free. 00:13:32.839 --> 00:13:33.759 And so brothers and sisters, 00:13:33.759 --> 00:13:36.679 there is a wonderful assurance for us here. 00:13:37.579 --> 00:13:39.339 We are called to think of ourselves 00:13:39.339 --> 00:13:41.539 as God sees us, 00:13:42.059 --> 00:13:44.500 dead to sin and alive in Jesus. 00:13:45.299 --> 00:13:48.419 We can be fearful of our sin, 00:13:48.779 --> 00:13:50.679 not realizing who we are. 00:13:51.240 --> 00:13:53.379 Or we can see
