does their attitude regarding the gospel have to be in order for them to truly believe on the Lord Jesus Christ? 00:01:27.340 --> 00:01:30.820 I see folks who have this notion in mind, well, you know know, 00:02:56.159 --> 00:02:59.079 I can just put this off until it's convenient time. 00:02:59.459 --> 00:03:06.399 I don't think that's the kind of attitude someone has who genuinely trusts Jesus. 00:03:07.179 --> 00:03:08.120 And I want to show you that. 00:03:08.199 --> 00:03:12.060 It's not a matter of what I think, what my feelings are, what my opinion is. 00:03:12.420 --> 00:03:14.199 It's a matter of what the Scripture tells us. 00:03:14.500 --> 00:03:17.039 And so I'm going to show you two stories this morning. 00:03:17.140 --> 00:03:20.879 One of these stories, everybody, virtually a parable that Jesus gives. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:39.199 And to be honest with you, it's one of those parables that preachers often overlook. 00:03:39.199 --> 00:03:42.899 We don't often turn to that and say, I'm going to preach a whole message on this. 00:03:43.159 --> 00:03:47.159 We usually just throw it in at some point in a sermon, okay? 00:03:47.639 --> 00:03:52.479 But this morning, I want you to know, it's the real focus of our message today. 00:03:52.819 --> 00:03:57.699 So go with me to Mark chapter 10, and let's begin our reading in verse 17. 00:03:58.219 --> 00:04:01.739 And I'm just going to read this story and then make some comments, 00:04:01.839 --> 00:04:05.019 and then we'll look at that other one, and we'll be done. 00:04:05.019 --> 00:04:06.780 Look with me to verse 17. 00:04:06.780 --> 00:04:28.139 Now, you may or may not know this story right off the get-go. 00:04:28.279 --> 00:04:31.040 If you look down at the heading above where we just read, 00:04:31.139 --> 00:04:35.180 probably your Bible has something like this, the rich young ruler. 00:04:35.180 --> 00:04:40.100 And you don't read that he's a ruler in this particular passage, 00:04:40.480 --> 00:04:42.740 but if you look at all the synoptic Gospels, 00:04:42.819 --> 00:04:46.400 you'll find that one Gospel writer says he was a ruler, 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:49.819 and then Luke says he had great wealth, 00:04:50.000 --> 00:04:53.600 and here we're going to see he had great possessions as well. 00:04:53.819 --> 00:04:56.040 So here's what we know about this guy right out of the gate. 00:04:56.240 --> 00:04:57.420 He's a young fellow. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.480 He's a guy who's a ruler, which means he enjoyed a certain fair amount of popularity. 00:05:02.480 --> 00:05:05.420 He has some status in the community, no doubt. 00:05:05.800 --> 00:05:08.420 And he's a guy who's got a lot of money. 00:05:09.160 --> 00:05:11.600 So when you think of all those things, 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:14.360 and you picture this guy coming running up to Jesus, 00:05:14.460 --> 00:05:15.960 here's Jesus and his disciples, 00:05:16.220 --> 00:05:17.540 and they're going on this journey, 00:05:17.740 --> 00:05:20.980 and right in the middle of their leaving to go on this journey, 00:05:21.300 --> 00:05:23.520 this guy comes running up out of the crowd, 00:05:24.020 --> 00:05:26.420 and he just kneels right there at Jesus' feet, 00:05:26.420 --> 00:05:28.160 and he looks up and he says, 00:05:28.600 --> 00:05:32.240 what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:05:33.140 --> 00:05:35.840 You've got to kind of say, man, didn't see that coming. 00:05:36.800 --> 00:05:40.939 It's not the kind of person you typically even read about in the Gospels 00:05:40.939 --> 00:05:43.920 who comes running up to Jesus and kneels 00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:48.780 and asks such a question, especially as directly as this man asked it. 00:05:49.480 --> 00:05:52.420 You find on another occasion a guy by the name of Jairus, 00:05:52.439 --> 00:05:53.259 he's a big shot. 00:05:53.660 --> 00:05:55.580 He's the leader of the synagogue in Capernaum. 00:05:55.579 --> 00:05:58.620 He comes up, he runs, he kneels, does the same thing, 00:05:58.879 --> 00:06:02.259 but you find out there he's an older guy who has a daughter 00:06:02.259 --> 00:06:04.240 who's at death's door. 00:06:05.060 --> 00:06:06.659 And so he's, I get it. 00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:07.959 I understand why. 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:10.919 He'd come and beg Jesus for a miracle. 00:06:11.279 --> 00:06:14.259 We see of others who come, and they ask Jesus, 00:06:14.399 --> 00:06:16.000 but always they've got in the back of their mind, 00:06:16.279 --> 00:06:17.860 there's something they need. 00:06:18.639 --> 00:06:22.299 This man's not asking for any kind of physical miracle. 00:06:22.300 --> 00:06:26.620 He's not asking for any kind of help in the physical realm. 00:06:26.819 --> 00:06:28.439 He's got that covered. 00:06:28.759 --> 00:06:29.160 You understand? 00:06:30.079 --> 00:06:32.000 He doesn't need financial help. 00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:34.699 He doesn't need a physical miracle. 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:36.680 He doesn't need anything from anybody else. 00:06:36.860 --> 00:06:39.080 He's wanting spiritual help. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:41.759 So it makes it all the more unusual. 00:07:05.740 I'd look over my calendar and say, 00:07:05.800 --> 00:07:07.200 Lord, would you help me with this and this and this? 00:07:07.199 --> 00:07:10.719 And I'd always say, Lord, would you lead somebody here today 00:07:10.719 --> 00:07:12.319 just right off the streets? 00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:14.000 They'll just pass by our buildings, 00:07:14.099 --> 00:07:15.379 and they'll just see our sign out front, 00:07:15.639 --> 00:07:16.560 and they'll just come in here, 00:07:16.719 --> 00:07:19.839 and they'll just want to know how can they be saved? 00:07:20.199 --> 00:07:22.379 Would Son of God, who better? 00:07:45.419 --> 00:07:49.779 Could you tell me, how could I inherit the kingdom of God? 00:07:50.019 --> 00:07:51.500 What can I do? 00:07:52.279 --> 00:07:54.939 So you know what you would expect, don't you? 00:07:55.539 --> 00:07:57.839 That Jesus just kind of goes in the wind up 00:07:57.839 --> 00:08:01.860 and all right and pow, knocks it right out of the stadium. wonderful thing to say, 00:09:26.560 --> 00:09:29.140 because Jesus knew what's going on in this guy's mind, 00:09:29.220 --> 00:09:31.080 and in his heart, and how he's thinking. 00:09:31.080 --> 00:09:35.340 Did he think that Jesus was God? 00:09:36.040 --> 00:09:37.220 Absolutely not. 00:09:37.720 --> 00:09:39.040 There's not a question in my mind. 00:09:39.520 --> 00:09:42.720 He believed that this man, Jesus, was God. 00:09:43.180 --> 00:09:44.800 He thought just what he said. 00:09:44.860 --> 00:09:46.920 He was a good teacher. 00:09:47.900 --> 00:09:50.240 He was a good man. 00:09:51.840 --> 00:09:53.940 And Jesus wants to capitalize on that 00:09:53.940 --> 00:09:57.879 and send him a message about what's going on in his own life, 00:09:57.940 --> 00:09:59.020 in the man's life. 00:09:59.019 --> 00:10:01.899 We all use that expression, don't we? 00:10:01.960 --> 00:10:03.840 We say, he's a good guy. 00:10:04.799 --> 00:10:05.639 She's a good guy. 00:10:05.759 --> 00:10:07.860 You go to a funeral, you always hear the preacher say, 00:10:08.019 --> 00:10:09.100 he was a good man. 00:10:09.799 --> 00:10:11.460 She was a good woman. 00:10:11.579 --> 00:10:12.639 And they're not lying about that. 00:10:12.720 --> 00:10:15.059 They mean that compared to a lot of folk, 00:10:15.379 --> 00:10:17.319 they're really a good, good, good person. 00:10:17.620 --> 00:10:19.639 Or even if you look at them individually, 00:10:20.360 --> 00:10:23.220 he treated his family well, she treated her family well. 00:10:23.879 --> 00:10:25.039 They were good citizens.
