00:04:54.319 Love, all right? 00:04:54.319 --> 00:04:57.159 I imagine many of us, even those of us who aren't Christians, 00:04:57.459 --> 00:04:58.759 might say love. 00:04:59.019 --> 00:04:59.639 God is love. 00:04:59.699 --> 00:05:01.719 Everybody knows that one, right? 00:05:01.980 --> 00:05:05.219 Everybody loves that one, that saying that God is love. 00:05:05.279 --> 00:05:07.899 It's one of the most famous passages in the Bible. 00:05:08.339 --> 00:05:10.959 It's one of the most famous descriptions of who God is. 00:05:11.079 --> 00:05:12.420 It's popular at weddings. 00:05:12.779 --> 00:05:13.939 Even people who aren't Christians, 00:05:14.420 --> 00:05:17.240 this is what they know that Christians believe, that God is love. 00:05:17.939 --> 00:05:19.759 And you know this famous saying, God is love, 00:05:19.759 --> 00:05:24.199 it actually does come later here in this letter, 1 John. 00:05:24.379 --> 00:05:26.300 It comes later in chapter 4, but the thing is, 00:05:26.599 --> 00:05:27.459 we're not there yet. 00:05:27.959 --> 00:05:30.480 It doesn't come, again, until chapter 4. 00:05:31.180 --> 00:05:33.339 And the interesting thing about our passage today, 00:05:33.980 --> 00:05:35.920 still very much in the beginning of 1 John, 00:05:35.980 --> 00:05:39.060 is that the message, the main point, 00:05:39.459 --> 00:05:41.939 that 1 John wants to transmit from Jesus, 00:05:42.139 --> 00:05:44.639 the starting point truth from which the whole rest 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:46.259 of this letter flows, 00:05:46.699 --> 00:05:49.259 in order that people might have this fellowship and joy 00:05:49.259 --> 00:05:50.659 that's appeared to us, 00:05:50.719 --> 00:05:51.839 is not that God is love. 00:05:52.899 --> 00:05:55.279 Actually, as it says here in verse 5, 00:05:55.420 --> 00:05:57.379 this is the message we have heard from him 00:05:57.379 --> 00:05:58.759 and proclaimed to you, 00:05:59.439 --> 00:06:01.399 that God is light. 00:06:02.420 00:06:19.339 Well, I think that what 1 John is meaning to say 00:06:19.339 --> 00:06:21.859 is that we have to start with the reality 00:06:21.859 --> 00:06:23.680 that in this world there is light, 00:06:23.959 --> 00:06:24.879 and there is darkness. 00:06:25.039 --> 00:06:26.719 There is truth, and there is falsehood. 00:06:26.799 --> 00:06:28.419 There is good, and there is evil. 00:06:29.079 --> 00:06:32.019 And that God is light means that he is completely opposed 00:06:32.019 --> 00:06:34.019 to darkness and falsehood and evil. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:36.359 And I want to try to unpack that for us this morning, 00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:37.379 because it's so important. 00:06:37.879 --> 00:06:38.599 It's so important. 00:06:38.600 --> 00:06:40.939 Because unless we are convinced 00:06:40.939 --> 00:06:43.140 that God is first and foremost light, 00:06:43.879 --> 00:06:45.540 we will actually never really experience 00:06:45.540 --> 00:06:48.200 his abundant life and the Like try to imagine the alternative 00:07:40.180 --> 00:07:42.040 to what 1 John is saying here. 00:07:42.120 --> 00:07:43.180 So try to imagine with me, 00:07:43.840 --> 00:07:45.800 what if God wasn't light? 00:07:46.639 --> 00:07:47.680 And what if in him, 00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:50.720 he like allowed within himself darkness, 00:07:50.860 --> 00:07:52.160 or even a lot of darkness? 00:07:53.100 --> 00:07:55.360 What if he was still cool with fellowshipping 00:07:56.040 --> 00:07:57.699 with those who walked in darkness 00:07:57.699 --> 00:07:59.000 outside of the light? 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:01.000 What if God was cool with all those 00:08:01.000 --> 00:08:02.699 who did not practice the truth? 00:08:02.779 --> 00:08:03.399 Imagine that. 00:08:04.139 -->
