00:01:51.140 We live in a culture that's very fond of spirituality. 00:01:51.719 --> 00:01:58.140 And we like the idea, and many people like the idea of spiritual exploration, spiritual growth. about a great yoga class. 00:02:07.539 --> 00:02:11.840 We could be talking about a really great brunch, which can be a transcendent experience. 00:02:11.840 --> 00:02:17.659 And all of those things are good things, but none of those things reflect what we mean 00:02:17.659 --> 00:02:20.379 when we talk about spiritual formation as Christians. 00:02:20.900 --> 00:02:23.159 As Christians we mean those we're going to be looking at together. 00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:18.039 There's a passage from 2 Peter chapter 1 00:03:18.039 --> 00:03:21.479 and then the gospel reading John chapter 15. 00:03:21.879 --> 00:03:24.620 And you can think of these as complementing one another. 00:03:24.620 --> 00:03:27.480 2 Peter is sort of the left brain version 00:03:27.480 --> 00:03:30.280 and John 15 is kind of the right brain version. 00:03:30.860 --> 00:03:35.800 And together they really illuminate what spiritual formation is and how it happens. 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:38.400 And they both kind of tell us the same thing. 00:03:39.159 --> 00:03:43.740 They both show us this, that spiritual formation has two pieces to it or two aspects. 00:03:44.319 --> 00:03:47.960 There's a passive or you're not familiar with it, 00:05:01.259 --> 00:05:05.919 the whole letter is about spiritual formation and growth and maturity. 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:07.099 The whole thing is about that. 00:05:07.100 --> 00:05:10.420 And yet, at the very beginning of the letter, 00:05:12.280 --> 00:05:17.040 Peter begins, before he even talks about growth or maturity or any of that stuff, 00:05:17.660 --> 00:05:21.600 before any of that, he makes one foundational statement. 00:05:21.780 --> 00:05:23.920 And you see it in verses 2 and 3. 00:05:25.240 --> 00:05:27.100 He says, here's the first thing you need to know. 00:05:28.100 --> 00:05:32.540 May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. 00:05:32.540 --> 00:05:39.220 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness 00:05:39.220 --> 00:05:44.400 through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. 00:05:45.520 --> 00:05:46.760 So, you hear what he's saying. 00:05:47.180 --> 00:05:49.759 He's saying, before we can talk about spiritual formation, 00:05:49.939 --> 00:05:51.960 before we can talk about maturity or growth, 00:05:52.500 --> 00:05:55.680 there's one thing that we need to be absolutely clear on. 00:05:55.680 --> 00:06:00.939 By knowing Jesus, saving knowledge, believing the gospel, 00:06:01.100 --> 00:06:02.620 simply by Peter version, 00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:35.119 Jesus is talking about the same thing in John chapter 15. 00:06:35.279 --> 00:06:37.599 Because what is the metaphor that he uses? 00:06:37.719 --> 00:06:39.579 Like I said, this is the right brain version. 00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:43.159 He uses this beautiful metaphor of a vineyard and a grapevine. 00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:44.659 And what does he say there? 00:06:45.459 --> 00:06:46.539 He says in verse 5, 00:06:47.039 --> 00:06:47.919 I'm the vine. 00:06:49.119 --> 00:06:51.039 You are the branches. 00:06:51.040 --> 00:06:54.460 And whoever abides in me and I in him, 00:06:54.819 --> 00:06:56.640 he it is that bears much fruit. 00:06:57.200 --> 00:06:59.140 For apart from me, you can do nothing. 00:06:59.740 --> 00:07:03.960 So he's saying the exact same thing as Peter is saying in 2 Peter chapter 1. 00:07:05.140 --> 00:07:05.879 He's saying, 00:07:06.660 --> 00:07:07.700 I'm the vine. 00:07:08.259 --> 00:07:08.520 Right? 00:07:08.519 --> 00:07:10.039 And then if you know anything about a grapevine, 00:07:10.379 --> 00:07:11.359 there's one vine. 00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:13.359 And as it goes up and goes out along the trellis, 00:07:13.439 --> 00:07:15.979 there are lots of branches that come off the one vine. 00:07:16.079 --> 00:07:16.419 He's saying, 00:07:16.740 --> 00:07:17.699 I'm the true vine. 00:07:18.740 --> 00:07:19.060 You know, 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:21.859 Israel thought of themselves as the true vine. 00:07:22.819 --> 00:07:24.439 That's what they were called in the Old Testament. 00:07:24.599 --> 00:07:27.599 But what Jesus is saying is that Israel has failed in that calling. 00:07:28.259 --> 00:07:29.620 And now he is the true vine. 00:07:30.120 --> 00:07:33.379 He's the one who's meant to bring God's fruit into the world. 00:07:33.439 --> 00:07:34.159 But how does it happen? 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:34.760 Through us. 00:07:35.720 --> 00:07:36.140 And he's saying, 00:07:36.220 --> comes from Jesus? 00:07:54.879 --> 00:07:55.860 We have to receive it. 00:07:56.660 --> 00:07:58.320 Well, let me make this a little more practical. 00:07:58.460 --> 00:08:02.760 And I want to do that by bringing us back to a movie that some of us have seen. 00:08:02.759 --> 00:08:04.939 Michael Hendricks and I were talking about this the other week. 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:09.079 And it reminded me of just the power of the movie Saving Private Ryan. 00:08:09.199 --> 00:08:09.699 Have you seen it? 00:08:10.180 --> 00:08:12.819 If you haven't, I'm getting ready to spoil the whole thing. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:13.659 And I'm sorry. 00:08:14.019 --> 00:08:15.360 But you've had plenty of time. 00:08:15.740 --> 00:08:17.759 So you have absolutely no excuse. 00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:20.079 But here's what happens in the movie. 00:08:21.339 --> 00:08:23.939 Private Ryan is one of four brothers. 00:08:24.219 --> 00:08:25.259 And they're at war. 00:08:25.259 --> 00:08:31.219 And the command finds out that three of his brothers have been killed in combat. 00:08:31.579 --> 00:08:33.819 And they recognize there's only one surviving brother. 00:08:33.919 --> 00:08:36.899 And they say, we have got to get this Ryan boy home to his mom. 00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:38.879 And so they call up Miller. 00:08:39.100 --> 00:08:40.480 Miller's played by Tom Hanks. 00:08:40.840 --> 00:08:43.399 And they tell Miller to take a squad of eight men 00:08:43.399 --> 00:08:46.379 and to do whatever they have to do to find Private Ryan, 00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:48.399 to get him out of the conflict zone, 00:08:48.539 --> 00:08:50.139 and safely home to his family. 00:08:50.139 --> 00:08:56.240 They're going to risk the lives of eight people to save this one guy. 00:08:56.379 --> 00:08:58.919 And so even Miller is a bit incredulous. 00:08:59.059 --> 00:09:01.960 And he says, at one point he says, well, this guy better be worth it. 00:09:02.840 --> 00:09:05.460 He says, you know, he better go home and cure some illness 00:09:05.460 --> 00:09:07.480 or invent a longer lasting light bulb. 00:09:07.860 --> 00:09:09.000 He better be worth it. 00:09:10.139 --> 00:09:11.439 And if you know how the movie goes, 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:13.600 every single one of those men dies. 00:09:14.779 --> 00:09:19.259 They all die trying to save Private Ryan, which they do.
