Now, up to this point, Melchizedek has been mentioned, and it seems like the author was getting ready to say something about him, but then he paused himself. 00:00:23.579 --> 00:00:28.420 He paused himself and says, look, we've got to just kind of do a reset here. 00:00:28.740 --> 00:00:34.740 Some of you, you're not able to hear what I'm about to tell you about Melchizedek because you've become dull of hearing. 00:00:34.740 --> 00:00:44.159 And so he begins to kind of introduce this Melchizedek in several places, but primarily he begins this process back in chapter 5. 00:00:44.159 --> 00:00:53.179 And so back in chapter 5, we see this Melchizedek being introduced in verse, let's just start reading in verse 5 of chapter 5. 00:00:53.239 --> 00:01:03.259 It says, so also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said, you are my son, today I have begotten you. 00:01:03.560 --> 00:01:09.920 As he also says in another place, you are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. 00:01:09.920 --> 00:01:20.099 And then he goes on to say a few more things about this, and then in verse 10 there he says, being designated by God a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. 00:01:20.099 --> 00:01:28.379 And so you hear this name over and over again, and it's kind of interesting that he keeps introducing him and trying to get this started. 00:01:28.379 --> 00:01:36.339 But then he says, look, at this point the author takes a break from it, and he actually kind of gets on to the readers a little bit. 00:01:36.420 --> 00:01:47.259 He scolds them a little bit, and he tells them that about this there's a lot that I have to say, but I can't say right now because you have become dull of hearing. 00:01:47.659 --> 00:01:54.259 Or probably my favorite translation of that verse is he tells them that they have become too lazy to understand. 00:01:54.260 --> 00:02:00.060 Now, however, the author is ready to dig deeper into this now. 00:02:00.380 --> 00:02:08.719 He's ready to say, you know what, we've been introducing Melchizedek, now let's just jump right into the deep end and talk about who this Melchizedek was. 00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:19.840 Now I believe that as we look at chapter 7 as a whole, that I believe the main idea of this text is that Jesus is our high priest and king, 00:02:19.840 --> 00:02:23.620 and because of this he is able to save. 00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:30.280 Jesus is our high priest, he's our king, and because of this he is able to save. 00:02:30.599 --> 00:02:36.319 And the point that I want us to clearly see today as we work our way through this text 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:41.199 is that Jesus is the only one with the authority to save. 00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:50.619 And our only hope in this life and the life to come is by placing our faith and our trust in him. 00:02:51.219 --> 00:02:55.179 This is the hope that we are going to be diving into today. 00:02:55.280 --> 00:03:02.079 And so before we can truly understand the point the author is trying to make about who Jesus is 00:03:02.079 --> 00:03:08.019 and what this means for us, we must first get some background information about this Melchizedek. 00:03:08.020 --> 00:03:12.219 So to begin with, I want us to quickly answer a question. 00:03:12.740 --> 00:03:19.340 And the question that I want us to answer as we begin this is very simply, who is Melchizedek? 00:03:19.939 --> 00:03:21.520 Who is this Melchizedek? 00:03:21.780 --> 00:03:24.939 And so we're going to look at the first 10 verses to begin with. 00:03:25.240 --> 00:03:31.460 And so if you will follow along as I read Hebrews chapter 7, verses 1 through 10, it says this. 00:03:31.460 --> 00:03:36.520 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, 00:03:36.920 --> 00:03:41.020 met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him. 00:03:41.500 --> 00:03:45.460 And to him, Abraham apportioned a 10th part of everything. 00:03:46.100 --> 00:03:50.180 He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness. 00:03:51.260 --> 00:03:54.920 And he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. 00:03:54.919 --> 00:04:00.739 He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, 00:04:00.899 --> 00:04:05.259 but resembling the Son of God, he continues a priest forever. 00:04:05.979 --> 00:04:11.819 See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a 10th of the spoils. 00:04:12.419 --> 00:04:17.479 And those descendants of Levi who received the priestly office have a commandment in the law 00:04:17.480 --> 00:04:21.600 to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, 00:04:21.960 --> 00:04:24.640 though these also are descended from Abraham. 00:04:25.220 --> 00:04:30.120 But this man, who does not have his descent from them, received tithes from Abraham 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:33.900 and blessed him who had the promises. 00:04:34.700 --> 00:04:38.780 It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior. 00:04:39.460 --> 00:04:42.200 In the one case, tithes are received by mortal men, 00:04:42.199 --> 00:04:47.459 but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives. 00:04:47.899 --> 00:04:53.620 One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, 00:04:54.259 --> 00:04:59.019 for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. 00:05:00.019 --> 00:05:05.039 And so as we look at this, we're beginning to see a little bit more of who Melchizedek is. 00:05:05.099 --> 00:05:09.240 Now this passage right here is really key for us understanding this, 00:05:09.240 --> 00:05:14.600 because outside of this, there are very few passages that shed light on Melchizedek, 00:05:14.680 --> 00:05:16.160 especially outside of Hebrews. 00:05:16.519 --> 00:05:20.699 Outside of Hebrews, there are just a couple of places that we'll find in Scripture 00:05:20.699 --> 00:05:24.319 where Melchizedek is mentioned or at least talked about. 00:05:24.740 --> 00:05:29.579 You have Genesis 14, which is pretty much giving you much of the same information 00:05:29.579 --> 00:05:32.720 that you see right here in Hebrews chapter 7. 00:05:32.720 --> 00:05:39.840 And then you also have Psalm 110 that says what Hebrews continues to say over and over again, 00:05:40.300 --> 00:05:43.780 that this Melchizedek is a high priest forever. 00:05:44.380 --> 00:05:48.720 Now in this passage, there are a few things that we really need to understand 00:05:49.440 --> 00:05:53.800 to better make this connection between Jesus and Melchizedek. 00:05:54.060 --> 00:05:59.020 Just in the first three verses here, there's a few things that we're able to see 00:05:59.020 --> 00:06:01.080 about who Melchizedek was. 00:06:01.079 --> 00:06:04.139 First of all, it says that he was a king. 00:06:04.459 --> 00:06:08.039 It says for this Melchizedek, king of Salem. 00:06:08.539 --> 00:06:12.060 Now Salem is a Hebrew word here that means peace. 00:06:12.120 --> 00:06:17.860 It tells us that again in verse 2 right there that he is a king of peace. 00:06:18.259 --> 00:06:20.939 And so we see that this king is king of Salem. 00:06:21.319 --> 00:06:22.979 He's king of peace. 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:27.019 But it also tells us what his name Melchizedek means. 00:06:27.019 --> 00:06:28.779 It means this righteousness. 00:06:28.919 --> 00:06:30.319 He's a king of righteousness. 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:35.980 And so right out of the gates, we're able to see that this Melchizedek is king of Salem. 00:06:36.060 --> 00:06:40.399 And many people believe that Salem would go on to become Jerusalem. 00:06:41.019 --> 00:06:48.100 And so this king of Jerusalem, this king of peace and this king of righteousness is who Melchizedek was. 00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:53.300 But we're also told right here something that's a little unique to him. 00:06:53.460 --> 00:06:57.540 That he's not only a king, but he's also a priest. 00:06:57.879 --> 00:07:01.660 Now essentially in the Old Testament, you had two priesthoods. 00:07:01.700 --> 00:07:07.740 You had the Levitical priesthood that we generally think of when we think of the priest in the Old Testament. 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:13.100 The Levitical priesthood that was there when they conquered the promised land. 00:07:13.480 --> 00:07:17.220 The Levites were not given a portion of the land like the other tribes. 00:07:17.300 --> 00:07:24.160 Instead, their job was to work in the temple, handling all the details and the logistics of temple life. 00:07:24.160 --> 00:07:30.980 And a subset of the Levites, those who were descended from Aaron, the brother of Moses, could become priest. 00:07:31.060 --> 00:07:33.460 And so you have this Levitical priesthood. 00:07:33.840 --> 00:07:41.760 But our passage introduces another priesthood that's not nearly as well defined throughout the Old Testament. 00:07:42.200 --> 00:07:45.520 And it is a priesthood after the order of Melchizedek. 00:07:45.519 --> 00:07:52.339 The author's making the case that this order is greater than the Levitical order. 00:07:52.939 --> 00:07:56.839 This priesthood is greater than the Levitical priesthood. 00:07:57.159 --> 00:07:59.620 And so why would he even bother to do that? 00:08:00.139 --> 00:08:08.620 Because he's about to introduce to us this idea that Jesus is a better high priest. 00:08:08.620 --> 00:08:14.539 Because Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek. 00:08:14.540 --> 00:08:16.420 And so we begin to see this. 00:08:16.500 --> 00:08:20.900 But also, I want us to quickly see right here that he was appointed. 00:08:21.720 --> 00:08:24.939 He's a priestly king who was appointed. 00:08:25.740 --> 00:08:29.520 Verse 3 tells us he was without father or mother or genealogy. 00:08:29.640 --> Old Testament here? 00:08:46.419 --> 00:08:48.500 This doesn't seem to be the case. 00:08:48.899 --> 00:08:52.699 It seems that he was a real human and that he had a real father and mother. 00:08:52.819 --> 00:08:58.659 But the way that he's presented in Jesus makes it seem like he just pops in and he pops right back out. 00:08:58.819 --> 00:09:00.299 He's there and he's gone. 00:09:00.360 --> 00:09:03.100 He appears for a moment and then he is gone. 00:09:03.179 --> 00:09:06.339 He shows up out of nowhere and then disappears. 00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:08.360 It seems a little mysterious here. 00:09:08.360 --> 00:09:14.159 We're not told about his parents so it seems like he's eternal. 00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:22.060 And so what the author is trying to communicate is the great king and priest, the king of righteousness and priest, 00:09:22.440 --> 00:09:29.539 the priest who is a priest forever, is greater than Abraham and thus he is greater than the Levitical priesthood. 00:09:29.539 --> 00:09:33.159 But he's not just doing this for the fun of it. 00:09:33.559 --> 00:09:38.079 He's not just trying to build this idea of who Melchizedek is just for the fun of it. 00:09:38.120 --> 00:09:41.419 He's doing it to point to Christ. 00:09:42.099 --> 00:09:49.240 And so the next truth that I want us to see in this passage is that Jesus is our priestly king. 00:09:50.079 --> 00:09:52.759 Jesus is our priestly king. 00:09:52.759 --> 00:09:57.700 I want you to look at verses 11 through 19 with me here in Hebrews chapter 7. 00:09:58.419 --> 00:09:58.700 It says, 00:09:58.700 --> 00:10:28.680 It says, 00:10:28.700 --> 00:10:58.680 It says, 00:10:58.700 --> 00:11:26.759 Now this is one of those moments when I realized that we could spend a lot of time in this passage just looking at this. 00:11:26.759 --> 00:11:31.600 But in this section we clearly see that Jesus is perfect. 00:11:32.179 --> 00:11:34.240 We clearly see that he is sufficient. 00:11:34.419 --> 00:11:42.059 We clearly see he's a priestly king who has made the perfect sacrifice and the final atonement for his people. 00:11:42.220 --> 00:11:44.779 We see that his priesthood is perfect. 00:11:44.919 --> 00:11:46.679 We see that his priesthood is royal. 00:11:46.919 --> 00:11:50.439 And we see that his priesthood is eternal. 00:11:50.440 --> 00:11:55.360 Something that we continue to come back to over and over again in this. 00:11:55.360 --> 00:11:59.039 And so I want us to think about that last truth for just a moment. 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:02.720 That his priesthood 00:12:32.960 I mean, it just means that something can't be destroyed, right? 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:38.259 It just simply means that it's something that can't be destroyed. 00:12:38.460 --> 00:12:45.540 Now, I don't know if you were like me, but I can remember when Nalgene bottles really first started making an appearance. 00:12:46.440 --> 00:12:47.639 I got those. 00:12:47.740 --> 00:12:49.379 I mean, everybody had a Nalgene bottle. 00:12:49.580 --> 00:12:52.940 And what everybody was saying about these bottles was you can't break them. 00:12:53.460 --> 00:12:55.960 They were making all kinds of crazy claims about it. 00:12:55.980 --> 00:12:57.840 And they're saying you could run over them with a car. 00:12:57.940 --> 00:12:58.840 You can slam them down. 00:12:58.900 --> 00:13:00.000 You can do all of these things. 00:13:00.120 --> 00:13:00.960 And they're indestructible. 00:13:00.960 --> 00:13:01.680 And they're indestructible. 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:05.580 Well, when I hear that, I kind of want to put it to the test. 00:13:06.139 --> 00:13:08.780 I kind of want to see how indestructible this is. 00:13:08.840 --> 00:13:19.360 And so the first thing I did, filled it up with ice water, went up on a balcony, threw it off of the balcony onto a parking lot, and it cracked and busted immediately. 00:13:19.540 --> 00:13:20.379 Water went everywhere. something's indestructible, we're not talking about that. 00:13:29.899 --> 00:13:38.759 We're not talking about something being tough or difficult to break, but a life that is impossible to destroy. Pentecost and says, 00:13:50.419 --> 00:14:01.519 This Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 00:14:02.019 --> 00:14:06.240 Now, at this point, he doesn't seem indestructible. 00:14:07.079 --> 00:14:11.439 At this point, Peter's just said that Jesus died. 00:14:11.440 --> 00:14:16.940 And if this is where the story ends, well, then that's where the Bible ends. 00:14:17.500 --> 00:14:21.660 If this is where the story ends, then why are we even here today? 00:14:21.720 --> 00:14:23.620 But that's not where the story ends. 00:14:23.620 --> 00:14:24.960 So let's keep reading there. 00:14:25.960 --> 00:14:28.860 He was crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 00:14:28.860 --> 00:14:39.740 But God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 00:14:40.259 --> 00:14:43.019 That is an indestructible life. 00:14:43.800 --> 00:14:45.860 That 00:14:52.360 --> 00:14:55.639 Jesus holds a priesthood that is truly forever. 00:14:55.639 --> 00:15:00.460 This truth is life-changing and life-giving for us today. 00:15:01.259 --> 00:15:07.779 It means that Jesus' victory over death, hell, and the grave is final and it is eternal. 00:15:08.419 --> 00:15:16.059 Which means that the same power that conquered the grave is the same power that in Christ, 00:15:35.559 --> 00:15:40.620 it is not possible for death to have the final say over us either. 00:15:41.240 --> 00:15:43.899 This is the hope that we build our lives on. 00:15:44.159 --> 00:16:31.060 that Melchizedek is a better priesthood, 00:16:31.160 --> 00:16:33.879 a higher priesthood than the Levitical priesthood, 00:16:33.940 --> 00:16:36.379 because he's a priest and he's a king, 00:16:36.480 --> 00:16:39.019 and because he was appointed and he holds this forever. 00:16:39.240 --> 00:16:40.180 We see it through that. 00:16:40.179 --> 00:16:42.819 We see it that all of this is pointing to Jesus, 00:16:43.139 --> 00:16:47.659 that all of those things that were said about Melchizedek are perfected in Jesus, 00:16:47.659 --> 00:16:53.620 and now is coming to this final point that I want us to wrap our minds around this morning, 00:16:53.719 --> 00:16:57.439 that Jesus is a better Savior. 00:16:58.319 --> 00:17:01.199 I want you to look at verses 20 through 28 with me. 00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:02.980 It says this, 00:17:02.980 --> 00:17:05.860 And it was not without an oath, 00:17:06.220 --> 00:17:10.900 for those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath. 00:17:11.299 --> 00:17:17.080 But this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him, 00:17:17.440 --> 00:17:20.559 The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, 00:17:20.920 --> 00:17:23.259 you are a priest forever. 00:17:23.900 --> 00:17:26.759 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. 00:17:26.759 --> 00:17:33.000 The former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing office. 00:17:33.640 --> 00:17:38.879 But he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever. 00:17:39.480 --> 00:17:45.779 00:18:46.059 but now you're making it clear to them, 00:18:46.259 --> 00:18:49.099 but what in the world does it have to do with us today? 00:18:49.099 --> 00:18:51.399 I've never even thought about Melchizedek. 00:18:51.500 --> 00:18:53.919 I've never even come across it in my mind. 00:18:53.959 --> 00:18:56.399 I wouldn't even know how to pronounce it on the page right here. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:19:00.079 And you may be thinking, what's the point of all of this? 00:19:00.639 --> 00:19:04.559 The fact that Melchizedek was better than the Levitical priesthood, 00:19:04.779 --> 00:19:07.379 but what difference does it make to me today 00:19:07.379 --> 00:19:12.000 that Jesus is a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek? 00:19:12.119 --> 00:19:16.980 Well, first, it shows us that we have a better and final Savior. 00:19:16.980 --> 00:19:20.279 We have a better and final Savior. 00:19:20.360 --> 00:19:23.900 There are so many things that we could focus on in this passage, --> 00:19:36.339 All this talk about Melchizedek and Jesus helps us to see 00:19:36.339 --> 00:19:39.660 that Jesus is the guarantor of a better covenant. 00:19:39.660 --> 00:19:44.000 It allows us to see that He is able to save to the uttermost 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:49.320 those who draw near to Him, draw near to God through Him. 00:19:49.540 --> 00:19:55.800 It allows us to understand that He always lives to make intercession for us. 00:19:56.460 --> 00:19:58.960 And so as we think about that, the first thing that I want us to see 00:19:58.960 --> 00:20:01.740 about Jesus being a better about how when God makes a promise, 00:20:20.120 --> 00:20:22.579 when God says something, it's true. 00:20:23.099 --> 00:20:24.940 That it doesn't matter what He says, 00:20:24.980 --> 00:20:26.819 if God speaks it, it's true. 00:20:26.819 --> 00:20:28.879 And so sometimes if the author is saying, 00:20:29.099 --> 00:20:32.279 hey, God made an oath with this, He swore by this, 00:20:32.379 --> 00:20:34.099 then what it's really emphasizing 00:20:34.099 --> 00:20:36.740 is the fact that we have a God who speaks, 00:20:36.779 --> 00:20:39.599 and when He speaks, He speaks truth. 00:20:39.960
