good to recap a bit about covenants and how the Bible works, how the biblical story works and how the biblical story brings us to this place in the Bible of 2 Samuel. 00:01:44.480 --> 00:02:01.080 The Bible story is God's kingdom coming through covenants, God's kingdom breaking into this world and being established in this world by way of God's covenant with his people. 00:02:01.079 --> 00:02:18.900 And that kingdom, as it's visible in this world, grows as the covenants that God makes with his people become more visible and expand through the course of the history that we find in the Bible. 00:02:19.020 --> 00:02:27.419 Just like that tree that's grown from that little seed into a sapling, into a little tree, into this massive tree like the fir tree that we've got out the back. 00:02:27.419 --> 00:02:31.500 That's very helpful in many ways. 00:02:34.759 --> 00:02:55.459 So the story is God's people, the story works towards an ideal and as we see it unfold in the history of the Bible, it is a story of God's people in God's land, under God's rule, awaiting a Sabbath rest that is promised to them. 00:02:55.460 --> 00:03:02.460 And that is what the message is to Israel as they come out of Egypt. 00:03:03.240 --> 00:03:07.640 At the Exodus, as they go into this promised land, there is the idea of rest. 00:03:07.860 --> 00:03:14.540 If you go into this land and obey my law, then you will enjoy the blessing of rest. 00:03:14.539 --> 00:03:18.179 But there is always this idea of an eternal rest that is coming. 00:03:18.459 --> 00:03:28.939 Right from Genesis 3, really, where our labour is now afflicted and affected by toil and marked by toil. 00:03:29.599 --> 00:03:30.859 Work is hard now. 00:03:31.159 --> 00:03:34.239 Even from there, there is the idea that representative. 00:03:44.680 --> 00:03:54.000 God's people are led by Moses, and then we've got the judges, and then Saul, David, and the rest of the kings. 00:03:55.139 --> 00:04:01.840 And of course, it works towards Jesus, ruling and reigning over his people. 00:04:01.840 --> 00:04:12.439 And the ideal that it works towards is God's kingdom in a new creation. 00:04:14.840 --> 00:04:22.560 Where, finally, his son will reign over God's people. 00:04:22.560 --> 00:04:28.560 And at the moment, we're not quite in that Sabbath rest yet. 00:04:29.040 --> 00:04:42.420 But we're in this time, in this epoch, between those representatives and the not yet, the waiting for the full fulfillment, the full culmination of all of this. 00:04:42.420 --> 00:04:50.900 Where God's people are under In you all the nations of the earth will be blessed. 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:52.320 And looking forward to Abraham's seed and doing that. 00:06:52.939 --> 00:06:55.060 The covenant of law with Israel, still in the transition between those two stages, really. 00:07:41.899 --> 00:07:48.539 We transition into Samuel between those two stages of the unfolding of the covenant. 00:07:48.739 --> important to keep in mind with what's going on in 2 Samuel. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:17.379 Generally, this is the unfolding of the next stage of God's plan for his people. 00:08:18.660 --> 00:08:20.040 The covenant of law. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:25.100 That was the stage that we're in up to now. 00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:27.860 God said, I will be your God and you will be my people. 00:08:29.019 --> 00:08:31.040 And this applied to the people in the land in this way. 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:39.019 So God elected Israel's fathers while there were still, you know, idolaters, Abraham and all of them. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:41.480 He rescued them from Egypt. 00:08:41.860 --> 00:08:45.860 He graciously blessed them even through Balaam, the unbeliever. 00:08:46.720 --> 00:08:49.259 And he graciously gave them the land through Joshua. 00:08:50.340 --> 00:08:52.659 All the initiative of God. 00:08:52.659 --> 00:08:57.719 Grace is the starting point of that covenant. 00:08:57.959 --> 00:09:00.719 People sometimes try to separate these things, grace and law. 00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:03.519 We can't really do that. 00:09:03.899 --> 00:09:05.139 They're intertwined. 00:09:07.079 --> 00:09:08.779 But the covenant starts with grace. 00:09:09.939 --> 00:09:14.139 The law is they must obey God's laws as the way of life in the covenant. 00:09:14.360 --> 00:09:16.519 God says, this is how you should live. 00:09:17.240 --> 00:09:18.639 And makes it pretty clear. 00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:24.720 And out of that law, attached to that is blessing and curse. 00:09:25.939 --> 00:09:30.340 Their stay in the land is conditional on them obeying the law. 00:09:31.259 --> 00:09:34.379 In the land that God's given them, Canaan. 00:09:34.639 --> 00:09:36.860 Blessing means enjoying life in that land. 00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:41.279 Curse means slavery to their enemies and exile ultimately. 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:45.559 So what do they do? 00:09:45.559 --> 00:09:50.599 They go and disobey God's laws and they fall into idolatry. 00:09:51.059 --> 00:09:52.859 And ultimately they go into exile. 00:09:53.859 --> 00:09:57.599 But before that, I mean right from the beginning, they go into the land. 00:09:58.139 --> 00:09:59.759 They fall into idolatry. 00:09:59.859 --> 00:10:02.399 And that's the whole story of judges, isn't it? 00:10:02.500 --> 00:10:03.479 Right from the beginning. God responds ultimately after that whole saga in judges. 00:10:37.899 --> 00:10:40.139 And they cry out, we want a king. 00:10:41.259 --> 00:10:43.759 They of course say, we want a king like the nations. 00:10:45.559 --> 00:10:46.980 And that's a sinful request. 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:52.980 Because God told them in Deuteronomy, don't ask for a king like the nations. 00:10:53.240 --> 00:10:54.519 And they go and do exactly that. 00:10:55.459 --> 00:10:58.179 So he graciously responds to that request. 00:10:58.439 --> 00:11:00.240 And gives them what they asked for. 00:11:00.799
