Who do we 00:00:39.219 --> 00:00:45.799 see as the sinners in this passage? Who is right and who is wrong? And perhaps 00:00:45.799 --> 00:00:52.000 immediately our mind goes to, well it's obvious it's the woman who was caught in 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:57.780 adultery. But as you look at the passage as a whole, as you look at any part of 00:00:57.780 --> 00:01:01.380 scripture that speaks about people, whether it's individuals or collective 00:01:01.380 --> 00:01:08.980 groups, we see that in this passage everyone bar Jesus is a sinner. We know 00:01:08.980 --> 00:01:15.280 because that's what the Bible teaches us. And it's often easy to look at people who 00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:20.640 have sinned in a very public and a very obvious way and say, well that person has 00:01:20.640 --> 00:01:29.099 sinned. But not look at others and even look at ourselves. We know this woman has 00:01:29.099 --> 00:01:37.039 sinned. That is very clear to us. She's been caught in a sinful act. But we also see 00:01:37.039 --> 00:01:42.420 that those who bring her to Jesus, they come with their own motives which are set in 00:01:42.420 --> 00:01:49.879 sin as well. They came with this woman to seek to try and catch Jesus out. 00:01:49.879 --> 00:01:58.719 And their hearts were full of sin as well. And what's fascinating is how Jesus deals with 00:01:58.719 --> 00:02:06.179 this situation and how the situation is transformed and how the outcome of the whole situation is 00:02:06.179 --> 00:02:13.340 not what maybe anyone expected at the start, but how very quickly at the end we see what a 00:02:13.340 --> 00:02:24.680 precious saviour Jesus is. The Bible teaches us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 00:02:25.960 --> 00:02:33.379 And as a church we meet with sinners all the time. Every day we'll be in contact with sinners. 00:02:33.379 --> 00:02:42.719 But another question we can ask ourselves is how do we treat them? How do we treat sinners around us? 00:02:43.419 --> 00:02:54.979 Do we label some as being worse than others? Some whose maybe sin is obvious and public we perhaps label them? 00:02:54.979 --> 00:03:03.560 Or do we treat strangers differently to those who we know and love and care for? Or do we see 00:03:03.560 --> 00:03:10.399 everyone in the same light? Wherever we are standing, wherever we are looking at a people 00:03:10.399 --> 00:03:16.560 around us, in a home or in a workplace, in a school, wherever we are, even in our church, 00:03:16.620 --> 00:03:23.319 as we look around and see so many faces in front of us, do we see everyone in the same light? 00:03:23.319 --> 00:03:35.799 Do we see all as the Lord sees us? That we are sinners ourselves? That we have fallen short of the glory of God? 00:03:35.900 --> 00:03:45.159 Even today I'm sure in many ways we've all sinned. But it's so easy to become like the Pharisee who we read of 00:03:45.159 --> 00:03:52.979 in the Gospel of Luke, in that parable that Jesus used, when the Pharisee there is praying how good 00:03:52.979 --> 00:04:00.500 he is and how thankful he is and how thankful he is that he's not like this tax collector, the sinner who is beside him. 00:04:01.620 --> 00:04:09.739 It's easy to come to have that kind of heart. And that's why we always have to look at ourselves 00:04:09.740 --> 00:04:18.220 and remind ourselves and remind ourselves that we are sinners, that we fall short. But in that, remind ourselves 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:26.699 what a precious Saviour we have. The Psalms that we've sung from Psalm 103 and Psalm 130, 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:34.860 they are Psalms we may be very familiar with and they speak to us so much about our sin. 00:04:34.860 --> 00:04:44.860 But they remind us too, how precious a Saviour we have. Psalm 130, those words of verse 3, 00:04:44.860 --> 00:04:56.220 Lord, in your presence, who can stand if you our sins record? Well, apply these words to this situation here in John 8. 00:04:56.220 --> 00:05:04.860 Who could stand before the Lord? None, but those who could know the Lord's forgiveness. 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:18.140 So we have a wonderful Saviour. We're not saying here that God condones sin. He is a holy God. He hates our sin. 00:05:18.139 --> 00:05:26.300 And that's what we see as he deals with sin and all its consequences. There's a great price paid for us. 00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:37.000 Because, as we'll see as we read, the wages of sin is death. But we see the cross as our great hope in the midst of our sin. 00:05:37.599 --> 00:05:45.579 The place where God has dealt with the sins of those of his people who will come and acknowledge our sins. 00:05:45.579 --> 00:05:53.459 We see that he gave his son at a great price and a great cost for our sins. 00:05:54.620 --> 00:05:58.839 God is a holy God. He hates our sin. Yet he knows us. 00:05:59.659 --> 00:06:03.919 And he knows how easily we are led astray. He remembers that we are dust. 00:06:22.379 --> 00:06:25.180 He knows us. He remembers us. 00:06:25.420 --> 00:06:29.000 That we are dust. That we are weak creatures. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:38.279 And as we look at this passage in chapter 8, we see how Jesus is such a loving saviour. 00:06:39.079 --> 00:06:44.540 He is sovereign over all and yet such a sympathetic saviour as well. 00:06:45.459 --> 00:06:52.240 It doesn't tell us of one who is soft on sin, but it tells us of one who loves sinners. 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:58.019 And reaches out to them in grace, forgiveness and love. 00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:06.500 And that's a powerful reminder to ourselves of how we are to be as a people. 00:07:06.960 --> 00:07:09.220 As the 00:07:27.040 --> 00:07:29.680 So I want us to see three things in these verses. 00:07:30.720 --> 00:07:33.920 We want to focus first of all on the woman. 00:07:34.180 --> 00:07:35.260 The sinful woman. 00:07:36.840 --> 00:07:39.580 Then we're going to see the crowd. 00:07:40.340 --> 00:07:41.940 The sinful critics. 00:07:41.939 --> 00:07:47.100 And then thirdly, we'll see a precious saviour. 00:07:47.219 --> 00:07:50.160 So first of all, the sinful woman. 00:07:51.560 --> 00:07:53.959 Now her sin is clear for us. 00:07:54.459 --> 00:07:58.779 From the outset, we see here the scribes and the Pharisees. 00:07:58.920 --> 00:08:05.000 They bring this woman to Jesus who has been caught in the act of adultery. 00:08:05.060 --> 00:08:06.720 We see that from verse 3. 00:08:06.720 --> 00:08:08.940 And they say to Jesus, 00:08:09.160 --> 00:08:13.140 Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 00:08:13.800 --> 00:08:18.460 Now in the law, Moses commands us to stone such woman. 00:08:18.940 --> 00:08:20.320 So what do you say? 00:08:21.780 --> 00:08:25.980 They have this woman and they have the answer of what is to be done. 00:08:25.980 --> 00:08:29.560 And in many ways you could say, well, they're right. 00:08:30.140 --> 00:08:32.779 They are using the law. 00:08:33.259 --> 00:08:37.320 The law of Moses commands us to stone such a woman. 00:08:37.500 --> 00:08:41.279 So they've got the basis there for how they're going to deal with her. 00:08:42.039 --> 00:08:45.060 She's guilty in the face of the law and before the world. 00:08:45.139 --> 00:08:48.019 She's been publicly humiliated here. 00:08:48.019 --> 00:08:50.399 And so they know the answer. 00:08:50.620 --> 00:08:54.939 So they're saying to Jesus, how are you going to deal with this woman? 00:08:55.019 --> 00:08:55.980 What do you say? 00:08:56.720 --> 00:08:58.419 But you notice in verse 6 how it says, 00:08:58.639 --> 00:09:04.899 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. 00:09:06.220 --> 00:09:08.860 And nothing is hidden from the Lord. 00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:13.179 He knows just why they've brought her and what their plan is. 00:09:13.179 --> 00:09:17.899 But isn't it interesting how they bring the woman to Jesus? 00:09:18.719 --> 00:09:21.719 The obvious question is, where's the man? 00:09:23.259 --> 00:09:24.039 Where's the man? 00:09:24.120 --> 00:09:27.379 How come he's not been brought to Jesus as well? 00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:34.479 We don't have the answer here, but we see that their attitude was one where the woman is at fault 00:09:34.479 --> 00:09:36.539 and that's all that matters. 00:09:37.719 --> 00:09:40.839 And she is being used by them to get at Jesus. 00:09:40.840 --> 00:09:44.560 And they're highlighting her sin. 00:09:46.620 --> 00:09:49.879 But we are all as guilty as this woman. 00:09:50.980 --> 00:09:53.399 We are all guilty before God. 00:09:53.480 --> 00:09:56.940 And what they don't realize is they too are guilty. 00:09:58.220 --> 00:10:01.420 This woman, she will know that she has sinned. 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:07.080 And they know that she has sinned, but they're forgetting that they too are sinners. 00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:13.860 They're publicly exposing her in this way, bringing judgment upon her. 00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:19.460 And yet they're avoiding the sin in their own heart. 00:10:21.540 --> 00:10:26.000 Her sin may have been hidden initially, but it's exposed. 00:10:26.000 --> 00:10:32.340 And again, it's just this reminder to us that all of us confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. 00:10:59.339 --> 00:11:02.240 Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always. 00:11:02.939 --> 00:11:07.179 But whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity. 00:11:07.179 --> 00:11:15.239 Again, there's that reminder to us that our sin is always before God. 00:11:15.959 --> 00:11:18.799 We don't hide anything from him. 00:11:19.500 --> 00:11:24.099 And though it's the scribes who are, as it were, highlighting this woman's sin, 00:11:24.559 --> 00:11:28.759 she is aware of it and the Lord is aware of it too. 00:11:28.819 --> to stand before God, as Psalm 130 speaks about. 00:11:43.240 --> 00:11:49.240 Lord, in your presence who can stand if your sins record whatever our sins are? 00:11:49.300 --> 00:11:51.500 They don't have to be big sins. 00:11:53.060 --> 00:11:57.320 Our sin leaves us short of God no matter what our sin is. 00:11:57.320 --> 00:12:06.879 Somebody once described it in this way using the example of might imagine would be the big obstacles. 00:13:15.240 --> 00:13:23.439 The person answered in this way, the thing that came closest to defeating me was sand in my shoes. 00:13:23.440 --> 00:13:31.660 Just a little thing, some grains of sand in their shoes is what came closest to defeating them. 00:13:32.660 --> 00:13:34.300 Not the big obstacles. 00:13:34.600 --> 00:13:41.080 As a reminder to
