00:02:32.599 And then 10 tribes out of the 12 broke away to follow a king, not in David's line at all, 00:02:32.699 --> 00:02:35.319 not following God's covenant. 00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:41.099 The people of Israel have wandered off on their own. 00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:44.259 Ahab is now their king. 00:02:44.719 --> 00:02:46.480 Jezebel is their queen. 00:02:46.580 --> 00:02:52.259 And they have brought other gods in from the queen's country, from her nation. 00:02:52.259 --> 00:02:55.840 And they've brought them among God's people. 00:02:56.780 --> 00:03:00.560 So God has stopped the rain for three years. 00:03:00.739 --> 00:03:02.519 No rain there. 00:03:03.639 --> 00:03:05.159 But He's about to send it again. 00:03:06.060 --> 00:03:14.139 And He wants His people to know that Yahweh, David and Goliath. 00:03:24.919 --> 00:03:28.639 So let's read the whole story in 1 Kings 18. 00:03:28.780 --> 00:03:30.620 What is this all about? 00:03:31.340 --> 00:03:32.240 Verse 20. 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:42.600 So Ahab, the king, sent to all the people of Israel and he gathered the prophets of Baal together at Mount Carmel. 00:03:43.240 --> 00:03:46.460 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, 00:03:47.100 --> 00:03:51.219 How long will you go limping between two different opinions? 00:03:51.879 --> 00:03:54.560 If the Lord is God, follow Him. 00:03:54.560 --> 00:03:58.439 But if Baal, then follow Him. 00:03:59.240 --> 00:04:02.360 And the people did not answer Him a word. 00:04:03.939 --> 00:04:05.840 Then Elijah said to the people, 00:04:06.219 --> 00:04:12.120 I, even I hopping. 00:08:41.519 --> 00:08:45.519 God's people don't even know how to answer. 00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:47.299 Unbelievable. 00:08:48.860 --> 00:08:50.659 Because they're hopping. 00:08:51.379 --> instead of atheism, it's a syncretism, a combination of gods. 00:09:56.659 --> 00:09:58.279 Let's have a little bit of all of them. 00:09:58.819 --> 00:10:00.139 They do things like this. 00:10:00.220 --> 00:10:06.639 They go to Yahweh's temple on the Sabbath and they go through the motions of the ceremonies 00:10:06.639 --> 00:10:10.559 and they sing praises to Him as the God of all creation. 00:10:11.519 --> 00:10:18.100 But then that night they're bowing down to a wooden statue of Baal and asking for rain 00:10:18.100 --> 00:10:19.059 for their crops. 00:10:20.399 --> 00:10:21.199 You tracking with me? 00:10:22.460 --> 00:10:30.379 They go during the day to teach Torah to their kids, including Yahweh's design for marital 00:10:30.379 --> 00:10:32.840 faithfulness and what that should look like. 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:37.920 But on the way home, they stop by the temple of the fertility goddess and break their own 00:10:37.920 --> 00:10:38.860 marriage vows. 00:10:40.879 --> 00:10:49.500 God hopping, limping between two different opinions, a little bit of whatever works today. 00:10:50.160 --> 00:10:58.960 God's people are supposed to pray for undivided hearts, wholly committed to Him. 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:08.860 But now they seem to be happily divided, happily hopping from Yahweh to Baal, our God to an idol. 00:11:12.180 --> 00:11:18.100 Thankfully, that stopped a long time ago and idolatry is not something we struggle with anymore. 00:11:19.400 --> 00:11:20.660 No wooden statues. 00:11:20.659 --> 00:11:27.240 No things we look to for life besides God. 00:11:28.459 --> 00:11:33.519 No things we give more time and attention to than God, right? 00:11:36.939 --> 00:11:44.980 Actually, religious people, the kinds who go to church a lot, even when it rains in the morning, 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:51.620 are still often experts at God-hopping idolatry. 00:11:53.139 --> 00:11:56.220 Some of it comes from a really good instinct. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:12:02.879 We all have this sense that I'm here for something big. 00:12:03.159 --> 00:12:08.500 I'm meant for something beyond myself because we were made, remember, 00:12:08.840 --> 00:12:12.159 for relationship with the God of all creation, the God of the universe. 00:12:12.159 --> 00:12:15.319 That's what you're made for, so you sense that. 00:12:15.879 --> 00:12:25.240 But idolatry looks for that big purpose, that significant value somewhere else besides Him. 00:12:27.219 --> 00:12:31.459 Three big reasons God's people in Elijah's day looked to Baal. 00:12:31.779 --> 00:12:32.980 You may recognize them. 00:12:34.219 --> 00:12:35.620 The first was power. 00:12:37.600 --> 00:12:39.799 That's how I'll get big. 00:12:39.799 --> 00:12:47.199 Yahweh, He's all right for church, but He seems not to help my social advancement. 00:12:47.479 --> 00:12:50.699 Too much of that humility talk and such. 00:12:52.059 --> 00:12:57.679 But the king and queen have brought Baal into the picture. 00:12:58.319 --> 00:12:59.779 I sure want to be on their good side. 00:13:00.039 --> 00:13:04.379 Won't hurt my social connections one bit to have his picture on my wall. 00:13:04.379 --> 00:13:13.019 I mean, I'm not going to quit going to church, but my political loyalties are more important than my family in Christ. 00:13:13.939 --> 00:13:18.419 I mean, if I need to reject the guy in the pew next to me, or if I need to vent my anger, 00:13:18.759 --> 00:13:21.220 you know, you've got to do what you've got to do sometimes. 00:13:22.039 --> 00:13:23.460 Hopping over to power. 00:13:23.460 --> 00:13:26.860 Or pleasure. 00:13:29.220 --> 00:13:34.600 You know, this Baal guy is cool with me doing some things that Yahweh's not. 00:13:36.160 --> 00:13:41.220 He's got a lot of rules, but ritual prostitution? 00:13:41.220 --> 00:13:53.200 And if too many kids result from that, child sacrifice feeds the idol and it keeps me comfortable. 00:13:55.580 --> 00:13:57.320 Yahweh's got so many rules. 00:13:57.460 --> 00:14:00.200 I like doing what feels good to me. 00:14:02.920 --> 00:14:05.379 Painfully, tragically familiar. 00:14:05.379 --> 00:14:13.840 The idolatry of power and pleasure make Baal an appealing God. 00:14:14.759 --> 00:14:16.039 So does profit. 00:14:17.980 --> 00:14:20.000 Baal was the fertility God. 00:14:20.559 --> 00:14:30.919 The one in charge of rain, lightning, fire, fertility for people, as well as for the land. 00:14:30.919 --> 00:14:36.039 And you know, remember how significant that is for these people, right? 00:14:36.219 --> 00:14:39.919 In an agrarian culture, this feels like where life comes from. 00:14:40.299 --> 00:14:42.779 This is idolatry of profit. 00:14:43.620 --> 00:14:51.679 Three years into this drought, I better hedge my bets and make sure the rain God is on my good side, right? 00:14:51.719 --> 00:14:52.559 I'm not stupid. 00:14:52.559 --> 00:15:01.179 I'll get back to Yahweh once I get my bank account built back up. 00:15:01.859 --> 00:15:10.619 Once I'm financially secure, I'll care for the poor eventually, but Baal takes care of me. 00:15:12.119 --> 00:15:15.679 Not all those other people Yahweh seems so concerned about. 00:15:15.679 --> 00:15:23.079 By power, pleasure, or profit, I'm going to find something big. 00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:25.399 I'm going to be something big. 00:15:25.519 --> 00:15:26.479 I'm going to find life. 00:15:26.539 --> 00:15:27.639 I'm going to be a somebody. 00:15:28.299 --> 00:15:35.359 And they'll even respect me at church as an important leader, a big giver, a community influencer. 00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:39.740 I mean, that's why I still bother to show up among Yahweh's people. 00:15:39.839 --> 00:15:40.639 It feels good. 00:15:40.719 --> 00:15:41.439 I tip the cap. 00:15:41.500 --> 00:15:42.659 I shake some hands. 00:15:42.759 --> 00:15:44.019 I look the part. 00:15:44.019 --> 00:15:48.199 I am an expert God hopper. 00:15:50.539 --> 00:15:54.699 God says this is alive and well in churches to this day. 00:15:54.939 --> 00:16:00.379 When Jesus writes to the church in Laodicea in Revelation 3, he says, 00:16:00.620 --> 00:16:01.779 I know your works. 00:16:02.419 --> 00:16:04.360 You're neither cold nor hot. 00:16:04.579 --> 00:16:06.699 Would that you were either cold or hot. 00:16:06.819 --> 00:16:13.819 So because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 00:16:14.019 --> 00:16:18.019 Elijah says, be one or the other. 00:16:18.360 --> 00:16:23.939 If Yahweh is God, follow him all the time in every way. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:27.340 If Baal, then follow him. 00:16:27.340 --> 00:16:33.300 But quit this limping, lukewarm hopping. 00:16:37.300 --> 00:16:45.259 If you're still not sure if you struggle with God hopping, a couple of questions to ask yourself. 00:16:45.259 --> 00:16:56.340 If anything besides God and his word gets your first, your best, and your most time, you may be God hopping. 00:16:56.340 --> 00:17:08.840 If you're compromising morality to do outside of church things that you would never do inside of church, you may be God hopping. 00:17:08.839 --> 00:17:10.839 If you're excited about anything. 00:17:10.839 --> 00:17:21.919 If you're excited about anything, your raise, your team, your kids' success, anything more than you're excited about God's name being honored, 00:17:22.039 --> 00:17:27.659 his kingdom having new members, his ways being lived out to the blessing of more people, 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:30.439 you may be God hopping. 00:17:31.399 --> 00:17:33.539 You probably are. 00:17:33.539 --> 00:17:41.059 So what do God's people need when we struggle here? 00:17:41.220 --> 00:17:48.799 How if we see ourselves in the same place as these Israelites in Elijah's day, what for us? 00:17:49.240 --> 00:17:53.480 This passage says what we need is a vision of the one true God 00:17:53.480 --> 00:18:00.400 and the difference that it makes to be in relationship with him above any other so-called God. 00:18:02.140 --> 00:18:06.259 So, the contest, the one we just read, 00:18:08.120 --> 00:18:14.240 is number one ranked Baal versus number two currently in their hearts, Yahweh. 00:18:14.539 --> 00:18:16.240 Who is God? 00:18:17.160 --> 00:18:19.339 That's what it's all about, right, kids? 00:18:19.480 --> 00:18:21.720 Who is the real God? 00:18:21.720 --> 00:18:27.420 And Elijah sets it up to make sure that the other team's got every chance possible. 00:18:28.259 --> 00:18:34.559 The big game is going to be played on his home field, Mount Carmel, a center of Baal worship. 00:18:35.559 --> 00:18:39.579 The numbers in his favor, 450 to one. 00:18:40.039 --> 00:18:40.860 And the game? 00:18:42.640 --> 00:18:43.240 Fire. 00:18:44.140 --> 00:18:47.620 One of his specialties, supposedly. 00:18:47.619 --> 00:18:52.599 The people say, this is more than fair, Elijah. 00:18:53.099 --> 00:18:54.099 Well done. 00:18:55.679 --> 00:18:58.979 Probably with a hint of, this isn't going to go so well for you. 00:18:59.419 --> 00:19:00.439 But, all right. 00:19:00.879 --> 00:19:01.939 You asked for it. 00:19:04.439 --> 00:19:05.619 Baal, you go first. 00:19:05.619 --> 00:19:08.699 As they prepare the sacrifice. 00:19:08.699 --> 00:19:12.619 As they start calling for fire from the fire God, 00:19:12.719 --> 00:19:19.399 what do we learn about following idols since we do some of these same things? 00:19:19.919 --> 00:19:27.919 Idols always seem to demand more activity, more performance, better performance from us. 00:19:27.920 --> 00:19:33.420 450 priests for several hours. 00:19:33.539 --> 00:19:36.840 Think of the man hours going in to getting Baal's attention. 00:19:37.140 --> 00:19:38.680 They're yelling to him loudly. 00:19:39.080 --> 00:19:42.500 They work up a flurry of religious activity. 00:19:42.740 --> 00:19:45.060 They're going through religious rituals. 00:19:45.440 --> 00:19:48.279 They are raving, it says, on and on. 00:19:48.620 --> 00:19:52.200 Eventually, they cover the mountainside with their own blood. 00:19:52.200 --> 00:19:52.380 Blood. 00:19:54.140 --> 00:19:56.319 We know that feeling,
