it in Exodus 33. 00:05:50.340 --> 00:05:54.019 Moses had that amazing privilege of talking with God face to face. 00:05:54.519 --> 00:05:58.099 And Moses recognized that God's people need God's presence. 00:05:59.279 --> 00:06:04.299 So he insists that God would be with them as they anticipate going into the promised land. 00:06:04.419 --> 00:06:05.819 Now, of course, Moses doesn't get there. 00:06:05.899 --> 00:06:09.659 But Joshua, his assistant, he does lead the people into the promised land. 00:06:09.719 --> 00:06:11.579 And again, Joshua chapter 1. 00:06:12.019 --> 00:06:15.240 Joshua is fearful of the responsibility he has. 00:06:15.240 --> 00:06:18.180 And God comes to him numerous times saying, I will be with you. 00:06:18.299 --> 00:06:20.139 I am with you. 00:06:20.500 --> 00:06:22.639 Leading the people into the promised land. 00:06:22.639 --> 00:06:25.399 And that promised land is for them like Eden. 00:06:25.579 --> 00:06:28.779 Here they are in God's place, under God's rule. 00:06:28.879 --> 00:06:30.379 And they're enjoying God's blessing. 00:06:30.519 --> 00:06:32.360 They know God with them. 00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:35.779 But their story, too, is marked by sin. 00:06:36.300 --> 00:06:37.219 Marked by rebellion. 00:06:37.419 --> 00:06:38.719 Marked by idolatry. 00:06:38.819 --> 00:06:40.139 We read Exodus 33. 00:06:40.139 --> 00:06:43.579 But Exodus 32 is the story of the golden calf. 00:06:44.839 --> 00:06:48.159 As they make an idol instead of worshiping the one true God. 00:06:48.219 --> 00:06:55.199 And ultimately, we know that the disobedience of the people is so great that numerous times they're driven into exile. 00:06:55.199 --> 00:07:00.959 Staying with the promised land, we're going to zoom into the temple. 00:07:01.379 --> 00:07:03.879 As our third location, we're also thinking about the tabernacle. 00:07:04.519 --> 00:07:11.180 Tabernacle and temple are the literal heart and center of the life of God's people. 00:07:12.099 --> 00:07:19.680 And God, in his kindness, as it were, set the tabernacle, then the temple, as his physical address on the earth. 00:07:19.680 --> 00:07:24.100 This is where God would meet with his people. 00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:29.560 That behind the curtain in the holy of holies was where God's throne was. 00:07:29.639 --> 00:07:31.720 That's where his presence resided. 00:07:31.819 --> 00:07:36.620 Although, as Solomon said, the whole earth and heavens couldn't contain the glory of our God. 00:07:37.019 --> 00:07:42.340 And we see in the story of Israel that the tabernacle and the temple are vital to their life. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:44.040 It's the place where they worship. 00:07:44.720 --> 00:07:46.680 It's the place where they offer sacrifice. 00:07:46.680 --> 00:07:51.860 And it's the place they go to meet with to enjoy the glory of God. 00:07:52.079 --> 00:07:56.079 But in their story, the temple, too, becomes unclean. 00:07:56.620 --> 00:07:57.780 There is false worship. 00:07:58.420 --> 00:08:04.819 The prophet Ezekiel anticipates a day when God's glory would depart, when he would leave his temple. 00:08:05.379 --> 00:08:08.780 So as you look at the Old Testament, as you look at the big picture of the Old Testament, 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:13.399 you see God desires and God promises that he would be Emmanuel, God with his people. 00:08:13.399 --> 00:08:16.839 But we also see there's this great barrier, the people's sin. 00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:22.060 And so the question is, how is God going to fulfill this promise? 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:25.039 And that takes us to our fourth location. 00:08:25.500 --> 00:08:29.399 And that takes us to the story of Advent. 00:08:30.719 --> 00:08:35.139 Matthew chapter 1, verses 21 to 23. 00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:40.939 The words that we read last week, let me read them again for us now, 00:08:41.199 --> 00:08:47.439 so that we can hear the words of the angel to Joseph and to recognize their significance. 00:08:48.220 --> 00:08:49.519 So verse 21. 00:08:50.600 --> 00:08:54.600 Mary will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, 00:08:55.519 --> 00:08:57.799 because he will save his people from their sins. 00:08:58.360 --> 00:09:02.039 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet. 00:09:02.039 --> 00:09:07.699 The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, 00:09:08.259 --> 00:09:10.719 which means God with us. 00:09:10.839 --> 00:09:12.799 The virgin birth is the great miracle. 00:09:13.259 --> 00:09:15.899 But the great miracle is also that here is God with us. 00:09:15.959 --> 00:09:18.860 This is who is to be born. 00:09:19.000 --> 00:09:22.759 That God's promise will be kept not in a tabernacle, not in a temple, 00:09:22.860 --> 00:09:28.480 but as the Son of God comes to take on flesh and dwell among us. 00:09:28.480 --> 00:09:30.759 John chapter 1, verse 14. 00:09:30.840 --> 00:09:33.379 The Word became flesh, and we've seen his glory. 00:09:33.480 --> 00:09:38.139 The glory is of the one and only, full of grace and truth. 00:09:38.220 --> 00:09:44.080 In the coming of Jesus, God's glory and God's presence comes up close and personal. 00:09:44.200 --> 00:09:51.220 We discover Jesus is God who saves, and he is the God who saves as the God who is with us. 00:09:51.220 --> 00:09:57.120 And so, as we look at the life of Jesus, we see the glory of God with his people, 00:09:57.560 --> 00:10:01.100 and then we see the wonder of his saving plan, 00:10:01.580 --> 00:10:05.620 that in the death and resurrection of Jesus, the one who is God with us, 00:10:05.660 --> 00:10:10.920 he now opens up for us the way of access back into let's move from our fourth location from Nazareth to our fifth location 00:10:23.639 --> 00:10:28.639 as we think about this Emmanuel idea, and we need to come to the church. 00:10:29.859 --> 00:10:34.699 Now, sometimes people have the idea, maybe have the imagination, 00:10:34.939 --> 00:10:35.699 wouldn't it be wonderful? 00:10:36.699 --> 00:10:40.639 Wouldn't it be just the best thing ever to have walked with Jesus, 00:10:40.779 --> 00:10:43.659 to have talked with Jesus, to have been there as he did the miracles? 00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:45.079 And of course it would have been. 00:10:45.080 --> 00:10:50.879 But remember, for example, what Jesus said to Thomas in John chapter 20. 00:10:51.020 --> 00:10:54.620 He said, after Thomas saw the risen Lord Jesus, 00:10:54.740 --> 00:10:55.879 you have seen and believed. 00:10:56.280 --> 00:10:59.320 Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. 00:11:00.120 --> 00:11:03.340 Or to think about Jesus' words to his disciples before going to the cross, 00:11:03.379 --> 00:11:05.379 when he said, it's better for you that I go away. 00:11:05.420 --> 00:11:07.560 And you're thinking, how can it be better? 00:11:07.639 --> 00:11:11.920 And the reason is that Jesus is going to come to be present with his people 00:11:11.919 --> 00:11:14.799 as the Spirit comes to dwell in us. 00:11:15.539 --> 00:11:19.860 The new address of Jesus on the earth is now in the hearts of his people. 00:11:20.559 --> 00:11:22.679 Jesus now dwells with his church. 00:11:22.919 --> 00:11:28.620 We become the living temple in which God dwells by his Spirit. 00:11:29.399 --> 00:11:31.639 And then to go back to Eden for a moment, 00:11:32.240 --> 00:11:35.699 you and I, just like Adam and Eve, we have, as Christians, the same task. 00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:39.379 We are image bearers and we have seen the glory of God 00:11:39.379 --> 00:11:43.120 and we are sent to spread the glory of God through the 00:11:50.920 --> 00:11:53.000 We started in Eden. 00:11:53.360 --> 00:11:55.180 We need to go right to the end of the Bible 00:11:55.180 --> 00:11:59.040 to think about the new heaven and the new here too is the world 00:12:27.419 --> 00:12:31.019 that you and I want more than anything else. 00:12:31.679 --> 00:12:34.219 Revelation 21 at verse 3. 00:12:35.019 --> 00:12:37.839 I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 00:12:38.099 --> 00:12:42.579 Look, God's dwelling place is now among the people 00:12:42.579 --> 00:12:45.199 and he will dwell with them. 00:12:45.839 --> 00:12:50.019 They will be his people and God himself will be with them 00:12:50.019 --> 00:12:51.879 and be their God. 00:12:52.699 --> 00:12:53.899 And what will this be like? 00:12:54.519 --> 00:12:57.240 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. 00:12:57.240 --> 00:13:02.440 There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain 00:13:02.440 --> 00:13:06.960 for the old order of things has passed away. 00:14:49.820 depending on what kind of site they are. 00:14:50.240 --> 00:14:51.400 Something along the lines of, 00:14:51.640 --> 00:14:53.000 no unauthorized entry, 00:14:53.160 --> 00:14:54.920 danger of death. 00:14:55.740 --> 00:14:57.160 Well, the Bible would say that 00:14:57.160 --> 00:14:59.900 because of our sin nature, 00:15:00.840 --> 00:15:04.580 we are unable and unauthorized 00:15:04.580 --> 00:15:07.340 to enjoy life with God. 00:15:07.340 --> 00:15:09.759 Indeed, His perfect holiness 00:15:09.759 --> 00:15:13.139 and our sinfulness renders us 00:15:13.139 -->
