were in place 00:04:58.740 --> 00:05:00.800 for this feast, this spectacle, 00:05:01.180 --> 00:05:03.399 this banquet that Simon the Pharisee 00:05:03.399 --> 00:05:05.819 was putting on for really Jesus 00:05:05.819 --> 00:05:07.079 but really putting on for himself 00:05:07.079 --> 00:05:08.739 to kind of pump himself up. 00:05:09.599 --> 00:05:11.099 And it's here in this text, 00:05:11.179 --> 00:05:12.759 it's in this shocking moment 00:05:12.759 --> 00:05:15.579 when Jesus teaches this life-changing truth 00:05:15.579 --> 00:05:17.859 that we read there in verse 47. 00:05:17.979 --> 00:05:18.179 He said, 00:05:18.419 --> 00:05:19.399 Wherefore I say unto thee, 00:05:19.939 --> 00:05:22.719 her sins which are many are forgiven. 00:05:23.459 --> 00:05:23.739 Why? 00:05:23.859 --> 00:05:25.199 For she loved much, 00:05:25.859 --> 00:05:27.620 but to whom little is forgiven, 00:05:27.739 --> 00:05:29.939 the same loveth little. 00:05:29.939 --> 00:05:33.860 As we walk through this story this morning, 00:05:34.740 --> 00:05:36.899 I want us to answer this question to ourselves. 00:05:38.000 --> 00:05:40.699 Do I live like somebody 00:05:40.699 --> 00:05:42.439 who's been forgiven much? 00:05:43.220 --> 00:05:45.180 That's a great question to ask ourselves. 00:05:46.120 --> 00:05:48.879 Because we see a very contrasting setting 00:05:48.879 --> 00:05:50.240 and we can ask ourselves, 00:05:50.500 --> 00:05:53.540 does my love for Jesus reflect that? 00:05:54.800 --> 00:05:56.720 I say that I'm forgiven much, 00:05:57.000 --> 00:05:58.220 but does my life prove it? 00:05:58.220 --> 00:06:00.940 Does my life show that I'm there? 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:02.040 And that's what we see 00:06:02.040 --> 00:06:03.100 in these first few verses 00:06:03.100 --> 00:06:05.420 that we read in really verse 36 through 39, 00:06:05.560 --> 00:06:07.000 this contrasting setting. 00:06:07.780 --> 00:06:10.420 We see this proud Pharisee 00:06:10.420 --> 00:06:13.000 and we see this humble sinner. 00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:15.160 Now when you read it at the beginning, 00:06:15.320 --> 00:06:16.080 in verse 36, 00:06:16.160 --> 00:06:17.460 and one of the Pharisees desired 00:06:17.460 --> 00:06:18.600 that he would eat with him, 00:06:18.920 --> 00:06:21.020 I mean, it seems like a warm invitation. 00:06:21.660 --> 00:06:24.620 It seems like a kind gesture. 00:06:25.640 --> 00:06:27.020 But when we really sat down 00:06:27.019 --> 00:06:28.779 and we really start looking into the text, 00:06:29.019 --> 00:06:31.319 this hospitality that Simon was showing 00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:33.139 was ice cold. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.799 He wasn't there in the sense 00:06:35.799 --> 00:06:37.180 so Jesus could, 00:06:37.359 --> 00:06:39.019 he could learn more about him. 00:06:39.060 --> 00:06:41.159 And he wasn't maybe curious in that way. 00:06:41.439 --> 00:06:42.839 No, we can tell very quickly 00:06:42.839 --> 00:06:44.139 there was no greeting. 00:06:45.079 --> 00:06:47.000 There was no kiss of peace, 00:06:47.079 --> 00:06:49.339 which is a standard greeting 00:06:49.339 --> 00:06:50.519 in this time period 00:06:50.519 --> 00:06:51.799 and really in this culture still. 00:06:51.800 --> 00:06:54.660 There was no water for his feet. 00:06:54.759 --> 00:06:56.939 We understand that the roads were very dusty 00:06:56.939 --> 00:06:58.079 and so they would come into the house, 00:06:58.160 --> 00:06:59.560 they would wash their feet. 00:07:00.540 --> 00:07:02.060 Generally, there would be a servant there 00:07:02.060 --> 00:07:02.780 00:07:25.819 --> 00:07:27.939 A lot of the eastern cultures are like that. 00:07:28.379 --> 00:07:29.799 And this was a big deal 00:07:29.799 --> 00:07:32.059 and it was one of the highest forms of honor 00:07:32.059 --> 00:07:33.239 to have somebody in your home. 00:07:33.819 --> 00:07:36.439 Or it could be a form of shame. 00:07:37.299 --> 00:07:40.059 And see, by refusing these simple received this. 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:47.699 And yet everybody's kind of looking around thinking, 00:07:48.060 --> 00:07:49.519 well, why didn't he receive it? 00:07:49.899 --> 00:07:51.319 Why didn't he get to wash his feet? 00:07:51.599 --> 00:07:53.719 Why didn't he get these different situations? 00:07:54.060 --> 00:07:55.439 Here's what Simon is doing. 00:07:55.539 --> 00:07:57.560 He's saying 00:08:11.979 and as we've seen it, 00:08:11.979 --> 00:08:13.680 as we've walked through the Gospel of Luke, 00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:16.400 the only reason that Jesus is probably here 00:08:16.400 --> 00:08:18.939 is because Simon wants to gather some evidence. 00:08:19.980 --> 00:08:22.000 They are seeking to destroy him. 00:08:22.220 --> 00:08:23.800 They are trying to catch him in a trap. 00:08:23.920 --> 00:08:25.480 They are trying to put him in a situation 00:08:25.480 --> 00:08:25.780 where they say, 00:08:25.900 --> 00:08:26.939 there he is, we got him. 00:08:27.740 --> 00:08:28.740 So he's there, 00:08:28.819 --> 00:08:31.180 and he's seeing what Jesus will say. 00:08:32.700 --> 00:08:34.180 Because from what we can tell about Simon, 00:08:34.259 --> 00:08:35.440 and we saw it there in verse 39, 00:08:35.539 --> 00:08:36.060 we'll look in a second, 00:08:36.440 --> 00:08:37.860 Simon thought a lot about himself. 00:08:37.860 --> 00:08:40.639 If you want to know how awesome Simon was, 00:08:40.700 --> 00:08:41.840 you probably just had to ask him. 00:08:42.779 --> 00:08:43.720 He's that kind of guy. 00:08:44.259 --> 00:08:45.240 He's going to tell you. 00:09:35.419 I'm going to show him 00:09:35.419 --> 00:09:36.899 what a godly person looks like. 00:09:37.620 --> 00:09:38.759 That was kind of his mindset. 00:09:39.459 --> 00:09:40.559 He wanted to let Jesus know, 00:09:40.879 --> 00:09:42.559 this is what you're supposed to look like. 00:09:42.919 --> 00:09:44.919 This is what God is looking for, 00:09:45.059 --> 00:09:46.879 and he might have looked good on the outside, 00:09:47.600 --> 00:09:49.600 but his heart was full of pride 00:09:49.600 --> 00:09:51.059 and self-righteousness. 00:09:52.100 --> 00:09:53.279 And Jesus calls this out 00:09:53.279 --> 00:09:54.459 in multiple places in Scripture. 00:09:54.959 --> 00:09:56.319 He said this group of people, 00:09:56.480 --> 00:09:58.179 they were like whited sepulchers. 00:09:58.759 --> 00:10:00.600 They looked real fancy on the outside 00:10:00.600 --> 00:10:01.560 and real ornate, 00:10:01.560 --> 00:10:02.620 but on the inside, 00:10:02.720 --> 00:10:05.100 they were just full
