00:01:12.439 --> 00:01:21.920 This morning we're going to come to one of the hardest passages in Genesis, if not the entire Bible, hard for its content, and I'll just be blunt and name it. 00:01:21.920 --> 00:01:25.200 This is a story, a story of Lot that's about incest. 00:01:26.340 --> 00:01:32.960 And so we have to ask this question, how do Christians find themselves in such gross sin? 00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:42.819 And I say Christians because in the New Testament, 2 Peter chapter 2 tells us, Lot was righteous. 00:01:43.219 --> 00:01:44.419 In fact, that's the words they use. 00:01:44.939 --> 00:01:46.979 Peter says, righteous Lot. 00:01:47.459 --> 00:01:49.879 And so there's a warning story for us here. 00:01:50.599 --> 00:01:58.359 Our question is this, why, how did Lot's daughters fall so low? Formes, 00:05:17.240 --> 00:05:21.439 who was convicted in 2019 of Medicare fraud. 00:05:22.379 --> 00:05:27.900 Over 20 years, Philip had defrauded the Medicare and the Medicaid system 00:05:27.899 --> 00:05:31.620 of a total of 1.3 billion. 00:05:32.620 --> 00:05:35.279 That's billion with a B dollars. 00:05:35.919 --> 00:05:38.419 Now, by some accounts, Philip was a great guy. 00:05:39.179 --> 00:05:41.539 And so there were folks who came to his sentencing hearing 00:05:41.539 --> 00:05:43.739 to talk about what a great guy Philip was. 00:05:44.299 --> 00:05:47.620 And one of the men who came to testify was the rabbi 00:05:47.620 --> 00:05:50.839 that had been with Philip's family for many, many years. 00:05:50.839 --> 00:05:56.679 And the rabbi says, look, the problems with Philip didn't start 00:05:56.679 --> 00:06:00.039 until he moved from Chicago to Miami. 00:06:01.399 --> 00:06:04.519 Really, this is a problem of location. 00:06:04.799 --> 00:06:08.439 In Chicago, Philip was a great, great man. 00:06:09.239 --> 00:06:11.859 In Miami, he became a crook. 00:06:13.019 --> 00:06:16.299 And so you all need to take that into account as you sentence him. 00:06:16.359 --> 00:06:17.679 The problem is environment. 00:06:17.680 --> 00:06:20.319 Now, there is some truth to that. 00:06:21.180 --> 00:06:23.000 Miami happens to be the headquarters 00:06:23.000 --> 00:06:26.840 by a large bit of Medicare and Medicaid fraud. 00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:29.220 And the book goes into a variety of factors to explain 00:06:29.220 --> 00:06:30.560 that if you're in Miami, 00:06:31.040 --> 00:06:34.220 the odds of you participating in that are much higher. 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:36.420 Gladwell goes on to say this. 00:06:36.460 --> 00:06:39.300 This is on page seven of your worship guide. 00:06:41.519 --> 00:06:43.980 Communities have their own stories, 00:06:43.980 --> 00:06:48.400 and those stories are contagious. 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:52.500 Now, you might say, that's silly. 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:54.759 Philip did what he did. 00:06:54.939 --> 00:06:57.080 His environment had almost nothing to do with that. 00:06:57.160 --> 00:06:58.120 The reality is this. 00:06:58.600 --> 00:07:02.300 We are affected by the world around us 00:07:02.300 --> 00:07:03.900 more than we think. 00:07:04.759 --> 00:07:06.580 We're affected by the world around us 00:07:06.580 --> 00:07:07.640 more than we think. 00:07:07.920 --> 00:07:10.060 In fact, a study came out a number of years ago 00:07:10.060 --> 00:07:10.839 that said this. 00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:13.560 If your friend gets divorced, 00:07:14.379 --> 00:07:19.120 you are 75% more likely to get divorced. 00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:23.319 If a friend of a friend gets divorced, 00:07:23.620 --> 00:07:27.959 you are 33% more likely to get divorced. 00:07:28.740 --> 00:07:31.240 The study's subtitle is this. 00:07:31.800 --> 00:07:33.899 Breaking up is hard to do 00:07:33.899 --> 00:07:38.319 unless everyone else is doing it. 00:07:38.319 --> 00:07:42.040 There's a phenomenon there called social contagion, 00:07:42.159 --> 00:07:43.839 which is simply saying behaviors 00:07:43.839 --> 00:07:46.680 and norms spread among communities. 00:07:46.939 --> 00:07:48.879 There's a sense in which sin is contagious. 00:07:49.519 --> 00:07:52.279 There's a sense in which righteousness is contagious. 00:07:53.100 --> 00:07:54.879 Now, that brings us back to our question, 00:07:55.699 --> 00:07:59.659 why did Lot's daughters do this? 00:08:01.300 --> 00:08:03.680 Why did Lot's daughters decide 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:07.980 it was a good idea to have incest with their father? 00:08:08.319 --> 00:08:10.360 And there are many reasons. 00:08:11.099 --> 00:08:12.399 One of them is this. 00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:17.620 Lot's daughters had been discipled by Sodom. 00:08:19.980 --> 00:08:21.939 Communities have their own stories 00:08:21.939 --> 00:08:25.420 and those stories are contagious. 00:08:26.500 --> 00:08:28.819 And what is the story that Sodom is telling? 00:08:29.300 --> 00:08:30.439 You guys looked last week. 00:08:30.519 --> 00:08:34.799 The story of Sodom is a story of sexual sin. 00:08:35.279 --> 00:08:37.779 And so those things had become normalized, right? 00:08:37.779 --> 00:08:42.720 Week by week, year by year, decade by decade, 00:08:43.480 --> 00:08:46.439 Lot's daughters had become desensitized. 00:08:47.240 --> 00:08:49.779 They lived in a world of sexual sin. 00:08:50.799 --> 00:08:55.159 Sexual sin seemed less and less scandalous. 00:08:56.339 --> 00:08:57.500 Of course, I don't say any of this 00:08:57.500 --> 00:08:59.480 to excuse anyone's behavior, right? 00:09:00.139 --> 00:09:01.799 Philip S. Formas is responsible 00:09:01.799 --> 00:09:04.740 for his $1.3 billion of fraud. 00:09:05.879 --> 00:09:07.579 Lot's daughters are responsible 00:09:07.579 --> 00:09:09.339 for what they did with challenge 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:10.439 is that the world around us 00:11:10.439 --> 00:11:11.879 is pressing in on us, 00:11:11.939 --> 00:11:12.939 then what should we do? 00:11:13.000 --> 00:12:50.060 to be in it, 00:12:50.520 --> 00:12:51.340 but not of it. 00:12:51.800 --> 00:12:53.020 So what are we supposed to do? 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:55.160 We're supposed to be in it, 00:12:55.240 --> 00:12:56.200 but not of it. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:59.000 We don't want to be discipled by the world. 00:12:59.680 --> 00:13:00.480 What's the answer? 00:13:02.440 --> 00:13:04.660
