It's like 90% of the church right here. 00:00:36.159 --> 00:00:44.879 So, you know, I'm sure there were lots of hands at home too. You know, it's encouraging to see the Word of God reverberating in our church fellowship 00:00:44.879 --> 00:00:53.379 as we build each other up in love, as Paul says in Ephesians 4. Well, let's go ahead and take a look at our passage in Galatians 2. 00:00:53.380 --> 00:01:03.580 As we come to this text, let me pray for us. Father, help us now as we come to Your Word. Lord, would we be edified by Your Spirit? 00:01:04.960 --> 00:01:11.900 Would we be built up in love? Would we be strengthened in our faith? Paul writes this, 00:01:19.260 --> 00:01:49.240 Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, 00:01:49.239 --> 00:01:55.000 so that they might bring us into slavery, to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, 00:01:55.359 --> 00:01:58.500 so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you. 00:01:59.879 --> 00:02:04.119 And from those who seemed to be influential, what they were makes no difference to me. 00:02:04.219 --> 00:02:05.459 God shows no partiality. 00:02:06.139 --> 00:02:08.939 Those, I 00:02:39.759 --> 00:02:47.439 Only they asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do. 00:02:48.780 --> 00:02:56.199 So, our passage today is about unity in the gospel, gospel unity. 00:02:57.319 --> 00:02:59.819 Now, let's remember the context here. 00:02:59.979 --> 00:03:06.560 In these early chapters of Galatians, Paul is responding to false charges and criticism 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:12.599 that he not only received his gospel message from the other apostles in Jerusalem, 00:03:12.599 --> 00:03:18.300 but also that he had been misrepresenting the gospel that the other apostles preached. 00:03:18.340 --> 00:03:27.580 In other words, there were false teachers in Galatia saying that Paul's message was both derivative and deficient, 00:03:28.060 --> 00:03:32.819 kind of like a photocopy of a photocopy, all kind of blurry and darkened and faded. 00:03:33.240 --> 00:03:35.439 They were saying that his gospel wasn't the real thing. 00:03:35.439 --> 00:03:44.120 So, in response to these charges, Paul, in chapters 1 and 2 of Galatians, gives us some autobiography. 00:03:44.879 --> 00:03:49.879 In fact, if you're looking for a handy outline of the book of Galatians, chapters 1 and 2 are biography, 00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:54.060 chapters 3 and 4 are theology, and chapters 5 and 6 are ethics. 00:03:54.159 --> 00:03:57.079 And Paul's going to walk through each of those as we go through this book. 00:03:57.599 --> 00:04:00.460 But in these first two chapters, he's giving us some autobiography. 00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:08.379 In chapter 1, we heard Paul tell the story of how he received his gospel not from the other apostles, 00:04:08.560 --> 00:04:10.860 but directly from Jesus Christ himself. 00:04:11.939 --> 00:04:18.160 In chapter 1, verses 11 through 24, Paul tells the story of how his apostolic message and ministry 00:04:18.160 --> 00:04:26.220 were not from men nor through man, but through Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead, 00:04:26.220 --> 00:04:29.260 which is how the book starts in verse 1. 00:04:30.840 --> 00:04:36.180 So, last week we saw Paul respond to this false charge that his gospel isn't the real gospel 00:04:36.180 --> 00:04:40.660 by showing how he received it directly from Jesus independently of the other apostles. 00:04:40.660 --> 00:04:50.800 But today, in the passage we just read from chapter 2, Paul now argues that even though his gospel 00:04:50.800 --> 00:05:00.520 doesn't depend on the other apostles, it is in fact the same gospel that they preach. 00:05:02.100 --> 00:05:09.980 Here, Paul recounts how some of the apostles in Jerusalem, far from preaching a different gospel than Paul, 00:05:09.980 --> 00:05:13.939 affirmed and validated Paul's gospel as their gospel too. 00:05:15.740 --> 00:05:19.080 In other words, despite what the false teachers were saying to the Galatians, 00:05:19.460 --> 00:05:26.520 Paul's gospel and what we might call the one true apostolic gospel are one and the same. 00:05:26.519 --> 00:05:35.519 The gospel, the gospel, the gospel, the gospel, the good news, that God justifies sinners, 00:05:35.959 --> 00:05:44.419 whether Jew or Gentile, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, apart from our works. 00:05:45.399 --> 00:05:51.039 That is the one true apostolic gospel. 00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:56.260 So, don't let anyone deceive you or mislead you, Paul says. 00:05:56.780 --> 00:05:59.140 This isn't just my gospel, Paul's saying. 00:05:59.300 --> 00:06:00.520 It's the gospel. 00:06:01.960 --> 00:06:03.860 God raised Jesus from the dead. 00:06:04.879 --> 00:06:06.700 He is Lord and Christ. 00:06:07.860 --> 00:06:12.259 And all who are united to the Lord Jesus by faith are released from all their guilt, 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:14.980 accepted as righteous in God's sight, 00:06:14.980 --> 00:06:19.560 and become full members and participants in God's family and God's kingdom. 00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:24.280 So, what we have here in chapter 2, verses 1 through 10, 00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:27.960 is Paul recounting an episode from earlier in his life 00:06:27.960 --> 00:06:33.980 where this apostolic unity in the gospel was affirmed and established. 00:06:33.980 --> 00:06:41.400 And with the time that we have, I want to take a closer look at this gospel unity 00:06:41.400 --> 00:06:45.439 because I think there are a lot of things that we can learn from it today. 00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:48.140 I want to pull out three lessons for us. 00:06:48.780 --> 00:06:49.600 The first 00:06:58.100 --> 00:06:58.480 Paul says, 00:06:58.480 --> 00:07:01.200 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, 00:07:01.259 --> 00:07:02.460 taking Titus along with me. 00:07:02.459 --> 00:07:05.379 I went up because of a revelation and set before them, 00:07:05.759 --> 00:07:07.959 though privately, before those who seemed influential, 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:10.339 the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles 00:07:10.339 --> 00:07:14.859 in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. 00:07:14.939 --> 00:07:19.479 Now, Paul here is most likely describing the visit 00:07:19.479 --> 00:07:25.419 that he and Barnabas made to Jerusalem at the end of Acts 11. 00:07:25.899 --> 00:07:29.740 If we pick up where our first Scripture reading left off this morning, 00:07:30.299 --> 00:07:31.539 we read this. 00:07:31.540 --> 00:07:32.379 It says, 00:07:32.379 --> 00:07:36.460 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch, 00:07:36.920 --> 00:07:39.860 and one of them, named Agabus, stood up and foretold by the Spirit 00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:41.939 how there would be a great famine all over the world. 00:07:42.319 --> 00:07:43.800 This took place in the days of Claudius. 00:07:44.520 --> 00:07:47.439 So the disciples determined everyone according to his ability 00:07:47.439 --> 00:07:49.720 to send relief to the brothers living in Judea, 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:55.280 and they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Sahal. 00:07:55.279 --> 00:08:02.079 So, we see there that Paul and Barnabas went up to Jerusalem because of a revelation 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:06.159 that a famine was soon to come, and they brought relief to the churches in Judea. 00:08:06.879 --> 00:08:16.319 But while Paul is there, he makes an express point to go to the other apostles living in Jerusalem 00:08:16.319 --> 00:08:20.459 and to make sure that they are proclaiming the same gospel. 00:08:20.959 --> 00:08:24.339 Now, why does Paul go through the trouble to set up this private meeting? 00:08:25.599 --> 00:08:26.500 Well, he says, 00:08:26.500 --> 00:08:37.460 Now, Paul doesn't mean that he was worried over the accuracy or truthfulness of what he was teaching. 00:08:37.580 --> 00:08:42.500 He wasn't sort of checking in with the Jerusalem apostles to see whether he had gotten it right or wrong, right? 00:08:42.539 --> 00:08:45.139 He had been doing ministry for 14 years at this point. 00:08:46.000 --> 00:08:47.360 According to chapter 1 of Galatians, 00:08:47.480 --> 00:08:51.200 Paul was quite sure that the message he received was from Jesus himself. 00:08:51.279 --> 00:08:52.200 It was the true gospel. 00:08:52.200 --> 00:08:56.360 So, if Paul didn't have misgivings about his own preaching, what was he concerned about? 00:08:58.140 --> 00:09:02.900 Well, Paul realized that if he and the leaders in Jerusalem were not on the same page, 00:09:03.680 --> 00:09:07.460 then all his work among the Gentiles would be severely threatened. 00:09:08.780 --> 00:09:09.180 Why? 00:09:11.340 --> 00:09:13.540 Well, you know why, right? 00:09:13.640 --> 00:09:16.300 Imagine Pastor Matt got up one week and said, 00:09:17.000 --> 00:09:21.100 God saves sinners through faith in Christ, so believe in Him and be saved. 00:09:22.200 --> 00:09:23.960 And then the next week I got up and said, 00:09:24.680 --> 00:09:27.259 God saves sinners through faith in Jesus Christ, 00:09:27.480 --> 00:09:30.980 if you also get circumcised and keep the regulations of Moses. 00:09:33.160 --> 00:09:38.040 So, believe in Jesus, get circumcised, keep the law, and then you'll be saved. 00:09:40.300 --> 00:09:43.840 Well, everything that Matt had done the previous week 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:47.560 would be severely undermined by me the following week. 00:09:47.559 --> 00:09:51.979 And that's exactly what Paul didn't want to happen 00:09:51.979 --> 00:09:56.699 between his and Barnabas' ministry in Antioch at this point in history 00:09:56.699 --> 00:09:59.099 and the apostles' ministry in Jerusalem. 00:10:00.679 --> 00:10:03.759 So, their gospel unity was worth pursuing. 00:10:04.059 --> 00:10:04.339 Why? 00:10:04.459 --> 00:10:06.319 So that their labors wouldn't be in vain. 00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:14.180 As Paul and Barnabas pioneered the gospel work in Antioch among the Galatians, 00:10:14.260 --> 00:10:18.940 they knew it was vital to establish the unity of the gospel message. 00:10:19.420 --> 00:10:22.000 They needed to be proclaiming the same gospel 00:10:22.000 --> 00:10:23.620 or else their labors would be in vain. 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:26.400 So they took the time to meet together 00:10:26.400 --> 00:10:29.820 and to talk through what they believed and why 00:10:29.820 --> 00:10:34.320 to make sure that they held the most important thing in unison. 00:10:35.800 --> 00:10:38.160 Gospel unity is worth pursuing. 00:10:39.820 --> 00:10:41.700 Now, today, this is important still. 00:10:42.379 --> 00:10:45.480 It's important between local churches, right? 00:10:45.540 --> 00:10:47.860 We want to partner with other churches other leaders in our city. 00:10:56.780 --> 00:10:59.640 It takes time to learn about church planting networks, 00:10:59.820 --> 00:11:02.300 with whom we're on the same page, right? 00:11:02.340 --> 00:11:05.920 It takes time to get to know other congregations 00:11:05.920 --> 00:11:08.460 throughout our region. 00:11:09.600 --> 00:11:13.220 But this unity in the gospel is worth pursuing. 00:11:14.760 --> 00:11:19.200 I'm incredibly grateful that Trinity can be a part of church networks 00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:21.200 that hold the gospel in common, 00:11:21.200 --> 00:11:24.380 whether it's our local Connecticut Baptist Association 00:11:24.380 --> 00:11:26.900 or whether it's our New Haven Network, 00:11:27.020 --> 00:11:29.320 Bridges of Hope with other gospel-preaching churches, 00:11:29.320 --> 00:11:32.379 or whether it's the gospel coalition nationally. 00:11:33.020 --> 00:11:35.340 We want to pursue this gospel unity. 00:11:35.540 --> 00:11:38.560 You see, local churches aren't meant to be just little islands 00:11:38.560 --> 00:11:41.260 pretending as if we can simply do it alone. 00:11:42.700 --> 00:11:45.440 We need to pursue unity in the gospel with other churches 00:11:45.440 --> 00:11:46.900 so that we don't run the race in vain. 00:11:46.899 --> 00:11:52.019 But this isn't just true between local churches. 00:11:52.019 --> 00:11:56.000 It's even more true within a local church. 00:11:57.199 --> 00:12:02.220 Our unity here at Trinity is grounded in one thing, 00:12:02.600 --> 00:12:04.759 the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:12:06.539 --> 00:12:11.059 If as fellow members of the church we don't hold the gospel in common, 00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:13.740 then surely all our labors will be in vain. 00:12:13.740 --> 00:12:19.120 I've actually witnessed churches where unity is not based on the gospel, 00:12:19.259 --> 00:12:22.000 but on family heritage or mutual friendship 00:12:22.000 --> 00:12:25.200 or on appreciation for a certain tradition 00:12:25.200 --> 00:12:27.779 or on a worship aesthetic 00:12:27.779 --> 00:12:31.919 or on similar, you know, interests in social causes. 00:12:32.120 --> 00:12:35.519 And eventually, friends, those churches fall apart. 00:12:35.519 --> 00:12:41.059 Most churches that splinter and die 00:12:41.059 --> 00:12:43.860 or that wither in stagnation do so 00:12:43.860 --> 00:12:47.259 because they haven't done the necessary and hard work 00:12:47.259 --> 00:12:49.899 of pursuing unity in the gospel. 00:12:52.299 --> 00:12:55.879 So at Trinity, we ask every incoming member, 00:12:56.860 --> 00:12:58.840 tell me, what's your understanding of the gospel? 00:12:58.840 --> 00:13:03.800 In a nutshell, what is this life-saving good news? 00:13:05.639 --> 00:13:08.220 We want to ask that question and pursue it. 00:13:08.300 --> 00:13:11.360 We want to make it a point to put the gospel front and center 00:13:11.360 --> 00:13:14.560 because if we don't have unity in the gospel, gospel is absolutely necessary. 00:13:42.299 --> 00:13:45.100 If you don't share a common understanding of the gospel, 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:48.299 then your marriage simply won't have the foundation 00:15:10.259 Now, why did Paul perceive 00:15:10.259 --> 00:15:11.939 that the truth of the gospel was at stake? 00:15:11.940 --> 00:15:14.840 Well, because they were adding 00:15:14.840 --> 00:15:18.720 a necessary requirement to salvation 00:15:18.720 --> 00:15:22.020 over and above what Christ had accomplished 00:15:22.020 --> 00:15:24.200 through his death and resurrection, you see. 00:15:26.220 --> 00:15:27.740 And whether these false brothers, 00:15:27.940 --> 00:15:28.700 as Paul calls them, 00:15:28.820 --> 00:15:30.020 thought of circumcision 00:15:30.020 --> 00:15:32.580 as an act of moral obedience 00:15:32.580 --> 00:15:35.540 or as an identity marker of being Jewish, 00:15:35.600 --> 00:15:36.700 it doesn't really matter. 00:15:38.160 --> 00:15:40.720 To require story of Acts, 00:16:10.720 --> 00:16:13.259 you know that in a little while 00:16:13.259 --> 00:16:14.879 after writing the book of Galatians, 00:16:15.759 --> 00:16:17.920 Paul actually does circumcise 00:16:17.920 --> 00:16:19.860 another one of his young partners in ministry 00:16:19.860 --> 00:16:20.660 named Timothy 00:16:20.660 --> 00:16:22.139 before they go off 00:16:22.139 --> 00:16:23.620 on another one of their missionary journeys. 00:16:24.820 --> 00:16:25.639 So what's the difference? 00:16:26.519 --> 00:16:29.100 Why be utterly unyielding with Titus 00:16:29.100 --> 00:16:31.360 but then be super flexible with Timothy? 00:16:32.080 --> 00:16:33.120 I mean, did Timothy sort of like 00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:34.680 draw the short end of the stick here? 00:16:34.840 --> 00:16:36.379 Like, what was going on? 00:16:36.379 --> 00:16:40.220 Well, the difference is obvious, right? 00:16:40.299 --> 00:16:42.700 The difference is that in the case of Titus, 00:16:43.580 --> 00:16:45.899 circumcision was being made a requirement 00:16:45.899 --> 00:16:46.720 for salvation. 00:16:46.899 --> 00:16:48.460 It was being made a necessary part 00:16:48.460 --> 00:16:49.580 of the gospel itself. 00:16:51.240 --> 00:16:52.480 Whereas with Timothy, 00:16:52.919 --> 00:16:55.019 it was done in freedom. 00:16:55.240 --> 00:16:56.159 It was done willingly 00:16:56.159 --> 00:16:58.500 in order to lower barriers 00:16:58.500 --> 00:17:00.679 between himself and unbelieving Jews. 00:17:00.679 --> 00:17:04.039 The one case threatened the gospel. 00:17:04.980 --> 00:17:07.259 The other case was an expression of love 00:17:07.259 --> 00:17:09.940 for the lost flowing out of the gospel. 00:17:12.440 --> 00:17:13.839 That's a big difference. 00:17:15.240 -->
