which puzzle people and distract us from the fundamental point, 00:02:56.300 --> 00:02:59.860 but it is a profound text to meditate upon, 00:03:00.120 --> 00:03:05.360 how Christians are to approach sickness and how they are to approach death. 00:03:05.360 --> 00:03:08.580 It's a very profound text, 00:03:09.240 --> 00:03:15.040 a text that is well worth meditating upon and contemplating upon for prognosis this week, 00:03:45.980 --> 00:03:48.240 where a loved one has had a bad prognosis. 00:03:48.240 --> 00:03:50.560 So this is a deeply personal text, 00:03:50.700 --> 00:03:54.260 and let's turn to it and see what it is that was said. 00:03:54.340 --> 00:03:57.200 It's Mark chapter 5, beginning at verse 21. 00:03:58.180 --> 00:04:01.040 And as you've been warned, if I get a bit emotional during the sermon, 00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:05.340 it is because it's obvious, obvious, 00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:07.020 now that you know that thing about Rocky. 00:04:07.820 --> 00:04:09.439 So Mark chapter 5, verse 21, 00:04:09.520 --> 00:04:11.439 and just before we read it, what's just happened? 00:04:12.040 --> 00:04:13.760 We preach through books of the Bible. 00:04:15.040 --> 00:04:17.819 Basically, Mark was written as one book to be read. 00:04:18.379 --> 00:04:20.719 And so we study it that way as a book. 00:04:21.839 --> 00:04:24.079 And what we just looked at last week was 00:04:24.079 --> 00:04:27.360 Jesus had gone to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, 00:04:27.519 --> 00:04:29.939 to the pagan side of the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:30.519 --> 00:04:33.740 And he'd come across, or he'd been met by a man 00:04:33.740 --> 00:04:35.920 who was demonized by a legion of demons. 00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:39.740 And Jesus delivers the man from the demons. 00:04:40.659 --> 00:04:42.620 And as a result of that, 00:04:43.519 --> 00:04:47.139 the people in the region want Jesus to leave. 00:04:47.139 --> 00:04:49.099 And so that's now where the story takes up. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:49.959 Jesus leaves. 00:04:50.500 --> 00:04:52.500 If people don't want Jesus, he leaves. 00:04:53.060 --> 00:04:56.599 And he leaves, and he goes back to the Jewish side of the lake. --> 00:06:07.819 Why this story? 00:06:07.819 --> 00:06:11.439 One of the things, if you read the different, 00:06:11.579 --> 00:06:13.540 the four ancient biographies of Jesus, 00:06:14.319 --> 00:06:16.219 if you read them, all of them, 00:06:16.719 --> 00:06:17.920 one of the things you'll notice 00:06:17.920 --> 00:06:20.199 is that they have all of these little asides. 00:06:20.379 --> 00:06:21.439 Mark does it all the time. 00:06:21.959 --> 00:06:23.980 Oh yeah, Jesus spent a whole pile of time 00:06:23.980 --> 00:06:25.740 healing people and casting out demons, 00:06:26.039 --> 00:06:26.939 and then he did this. 00:06:27.920 --> 00:06:29.659 Or he spent the day doing this, 00:06:29.879 --> 00:06:31.219 healing people, casting out demons, 00:06:31.480 --> 00:06:32.740 and then he did this. 00:06:33.259 --> 00:06:35.699 And several of the writers 00:06:35.699 --> 00:06:37.379 mention right in the book 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:39.839 that if they actually were to record everything that Jesus did, 00:06:39.879 --> 00:06:40.939 it would be too many books. 00:06:41.579 --> 00:06:43.800 Because he did lots of miracles. 00:06:44.819 --> 00:06:46.219 So you have to ask yourself a little bit, 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:47.659 why this story? 00:06:47.860 --> 00:06:49.219 Like why did they tell this story 00:06:49.219 --> 00:06:52.500 rather than the thousands of other stories of healings 00:06:52.500 --> 00:06:54.079 that they could potentially have told? 00:06:54.079 --> 00:06:57.819 And I think one of the reasons is 00:06:57.819 --> 00:06:58.519 you have to remember 00:06:58.519 --> 00:07:00.219 every time you read the Bible 00:07:00.219 --> 00:07:01.500 is on one level, 00:07:01.639 --> 00:07:03.599 the world is very different than today. 00:07:03.859 --> 00:07:04.859 I mean, on the other level, 00:07:04.919 --> 00:07:05.639 it's very same. 00:07:05.719 --> 00:07:08.219 We still wrestle with the death of loved ones. 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:10.180 And all of us will die 00:07:10.180 --> 00:07:12.139 unless Jesus comes first. 00:07:12.240 --> 00:07:14.019 Like that's all very deeply personal. 00:07:14.620 --> 00:07:16.579 And people back then 00:08:23.019 --> 00:08:23.899 They would have looked at it and said, 00:08:23.959 --> 00:08:25.040 you know, you remember that time 00:08:25.040 --> 00:08:25.579 when this happened 00:08:25.579 --> 00:08:26.980 and it was immediately followed by this 00:08:26.980 --> 00:08:28.300 and it was really striking. 00:08:29.339 --> 00:08:30.199 And the other thing, 00:08:30.319 --> 00:08:31.540 and this would help with memory, 00:08:31.720 --> 00:08:33.320 is that the woman has been suffering 00:08:33.320 --> 00:08:34.299 for 12 years 00:08:34.299 --> 00:08:35.940 and the girl is 12 years old. once again, 00:09:05.379 --> 00:09:06.860 part of what Mark is doing 00:09:06.860 --> 00:09:08.399 is to say this actually happened. 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:10.279 This is historical. 00:09:11.319 --> 00:09:13.059 The fact that he gives the name 00:09:13.059 --> 00:09:14.559 of an important person 00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:16.159 and the fact that he mentions 00:09:16.159 --> 00:09:17.819 that lots of people were around. 00:09:18.899 --> 00:09:20.919 This is all the way that if Paul, 00:09:21.319 --> 00:09:21.919 not Paul, 00:09:22.019 --> 00:09:23.139 Mark is writing this 00:09:23.139 --> 00:09:24.399 and he's writing it at the time 00:09:24.399 --> 00:09:26.100 that many of these eye and ear witnesses 00:09:26.100 --> 00:09:27.059 were still alive 00:09:27.059 --> 00:09:29.480 and he's really constantly inviting people 00:09:29.480 --> 00:09:29.779 to say, 00:09:29.860 --> 00:09:31.340 listen, if you have any questions about this, 00:09:31.439 --> 00:09:31.980 get on a boat,
