is, 00:03:53.379 --> 00:03:56.479 are you listening to the word of the Lord? 00:03:56.479 --> 00:04:01.479 The word of the Lord has all of the answers that we need. 00:04:02.199 --> 00:04:06.019 Tells us about God, how we can be made right with him. 00:04:06.219 --> 00:04:10.120 And it tells us how we should live in a way that is pleasing to him. 00:04:10.719 --> 00:04:16.539 But we need to be willing to listen to and submit to what it says. 00:04:16.540 --> 00:04:22.080 The word of the Lord is available for everyone to read. 00:04:22.540 --> 00:04:24.160 The word of the Lord is Because at this point Israel had the law. 00:05:28.839 --> 00:05:30.279 And that is perfectly true. 00:05:32.560 --> 00:05:35.479 But the reason I say that the word of the Lord is absent. 00:05:36.319 --> 00:05:40.439 Is because even though they physically had the law with them in Israel. 00:05:40.639 --> 00:05:41.979 They didn't listen to it. 00:05:43.219 --> 00:05:46.219 The word of the Lord was physically present in written form. 00:05:46.319 --> 00:05:49.579 But it was absent from Israel's heart and Israel's mind. 00:05:51.459 --> 00:05:55.799 Verse 1 gives us the setting that Samuel is in at this stage of his life. 00:05:55.839 --> 00:06:01.319 Samuel is described as a boy who is ministering before the Lord. 00:06:01.379 --> 00:06:05.659 Meaning that he was fulfilling some form of duties under the supervision of Eli. 00:06:06.939 --> 00:06:10.319 Samuel at this point probably would have been around 12 years old. 00:06:11.479 --> 00:06:15.919 And the situation that he is ministering in is spiritually dire. 00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:22.420 In those days, verse 1 says, the word of the Lord was rare. 00:06:23.180 --> 00:06:25.000 There were not many visions. 00:06:26.220 --> 00:06:30.700 The word of the Lord was absent because people had no regard for it. 00:06:31.700 --> 00:06:33.280 They didn't care for the law. 00:06:33.660 --> 00:06:37.120 Each did what was right in his own eyes. 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:43.800 God did not reveal himself to the people and they were not seeking his face. 00:06:45.259 --> 00:06:54.439 During times of flagrant sin throughout history, God's silence was an indication of his displeasure with his people. 00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:59.480 And this is the situation that Samuel is ministering in. 00:07:00.300 --> 00:07:02.360 The leaders are spiritually corrupt. 00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:04.819 God's people weren't listening to God. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:06.120 They rejected him. 00:07:06.920 --> 00:07:11.899 The book of Judges describes the spiritual climate in Israel at that time. 00:07:12.360 --> 00:07:14.939 And it was as cold as the chicken that sits in my freezer. 00:07:16.240 --> 00:07:18.600 Israel was caught in a cycle of sin. 00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:22.100 The people sinned and rebelled against God. 00:07:22.400 --> 00:07:25.680 They were called back and for a short time they obeyed. 00:07:26.400 --> 00:07:31.040 But then they plummeted back into the depths of their sin. 00:07:31.120 --> 00:07:34.800 And this cycle goes on and on through the whole of the Old Testament. 00:07:36.680 --> 00:07:42.580 When Israel was obedient to God and to his law, times of blessing came. 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:44.740 The people were at peace. 00:07:45.240 --> 00:07:46.300 Peace with God. 00:07:46.660 00:08:36.039 The ones who should be leading the worship of God. 00:08:36.039 --> 00:08:40.039 The ones who should be setting an example of godly living. 00:08:40.039 --> 00:08:45.500 The ones who are supposed to be teaching the people the ways of God. 00:08:45.500 --> 00:08:48.959 Inviting them to come and worship their creator. 00:08:49.899 --> 00:08:53.219 Have turned to the desires of their flesh instead. 00:08:54.699 --> 00:09:01.620 Chapter 2 outlines how Eli's sons committed horrifying acts against others for their own physical pleasure. 00:09:01.620 --> 00:09:08.779 How they disregarded God's law and threatened worshippers so that they could get their fill of nice food. 00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:14.740 These priests were not serving the Lord but they were serving themselves. 00:09:15.919 --> 00:09:18.659 And they had made a mockery of the priesthood. 00:09:20.360 --> 00:09:21.899 And Eli was silent. 00:09:22.740 --> 00:09:24.440 He did not rebuke his sons. 00:09:24.440 --> 00:09:26.900 Once he called them out. 00:09:26.900 --> 00:09:28.660 But he didn't really follow it up. 00:09:29.060 --> 00:09:31.120 He didn't chastise them for their actions. 00:09:31.120 --> of this book is always characterized by ministering before the Lord. 00:09:58.140 --> 00:10:02.000 Eli's depicted as an old man who was weak and could barely see. 00:10:03.100 --> 00:10:06.380 And this lack of sight is both physical and spiritual. 00:10:07.540 --> 00:10:15.200 But Samuel is raised up and depicted as a humble, servant-hearted, devout young teenager. 00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:18.420 And you can see Samuel's obedience, can't you? 00:10:18.660 --> 00:10:25.740 When in the middle of the night this 12-year-old boy hears his name and gets up because he thinks it's Eli calling. how they do. 00:11:31.379 --> 00:11:37.279 And so the author of 1 Samuel is building the tension as the Lord calls Samuel. 00:11:38.960 --> 00:11:41.879 And we're supposed to be sitting at the edge of our seats. 00:11:42.779 --> 00:11:44.379 Ready to see what's coming. 00:11:44.559 --> 00:11:46.399 Ready to hear what the future holds. 00:11:46.860 --> 00:11:49.200 And ready to hear the Lord speak. 00:11:49.200 --> 00:11:52.340 This marks the beginning of something new. 00:11:53.280 --> 00:11:55.360 Something different in the nation of Israel. 00:11:56.180 --> 00:11:58.060 Something's going to by God and Eli realizes that. 00:12:15.700 --> 00:12:18.580 The third time Samuel runs into his room in verse 9. 00:12:19.200 --> 00:12:24.000 But after the second time Samuel runs to Eli, 00:12:24.180 --> 00:12:26.700 we have a little comment from the author in verse 7. 00:12:27.600 --> 00:12:28.680 And it says this. 00:12:29.700 --> 00:12:32.200 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord. 00:12:32.720 --> 00:12:36.259 The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 00:12:37.040 --> 00:12:42.100 This is an interesting comment which gives us a picture of Samuel's life. 00:12:43.140 --> 00:12:45.940 But this does not mean that he did not believe in God. 00:12:45.940 --> 00:12:49.060 This does not mean that he had no faith. 00:12:49.500 --> 00:12:53.960 But it means that he had not yet been given a prophetic revelation of the Lord. 00:12:54.120 --> 00:12:55.880 As he would receive that very morning. 00:12:57.540 --> 00:13:01.020 Samuel had not yet experienced the call of the Lord. 00:13:01.240 --> 00:13:03.000 But that would all change soon enough. 00:13:05.520 --> 00:13:10.180 Eli realizes that Samuel is not just playing a trick on him to wake him up in the not recognizing his voice. 00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:29.700 God does not get frustrated because Samuel thinks it's Eli calling. 00:18:29.940 --> 00:18:32.039 God doesn't just say, Samuel, wake up.
