00:05:02.579 But if you look back at verses 9 and 10, 00:05:02.659 --> 00:05:05.740 we see Jesus interacting with the first group of people. 00:05:07.120 --> 00:05:09.480 Jesus has just healed the paralytic. 00:05:09.480 --> 00:05:13.680 Remember, he said the Pharisees were like, 00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:15.520 oh, who can forgive but God alone? 00:05:15.720 --> 00:05:16.720 And Jesus was like, 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:17.500 that you may know, 00:05:17.560 --> 00:05:19.340 the Son of Man has the authority on earth 00:05:19.340 --> 00:05:20.040 to forgive sins. 00:05:20.120 --> 00:05:21.420 He turns to the paralytic and says, 00:05:21.780 --> 00:05:23.439 get up, pick up your mat, and go home. 00:05:23.740 --> 00:05:25.259 And the paralytic gets up, 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:26.759 picks up his mat, and goes home. 00:05:26.860 --> 00:05:29.640 It shows, this visible healing 00:05:29.640 --> 00:05:31.960 shows Jesus' authority over sin. 00:05:32.259 --> 00:05:33.939 And so Jesus is coming from that episode. 00:05:34.100 --> 00:05:34.640 He leaves the house, 00:05:34.680 --> 00:05:35.420 he's walking along, 00:05:35.420 --> 00:05:38.800 and he sees Matthew in a tax booth. 00:05:41.540 --> 00:05:42.920 Now you've got to understand something. 00:05:44.140 --> 00:05:45.480 Jewish tax collectors, 00:05:45.900 --> 00:05:48.300 they had a bad reputation. 00:05:50.080 --> 00:05:51.220 Think about it this way. 00:05:51.259 --> 00:05:53.600 They were considered by other Jews as traitors 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:55.800 because they were collecting taxes 00:05:55.800 --> 00:05:59.439 for the occupying Roman force. 00:05:59.960 --> 00:06:01.060 They're collecting money 00:06:01.060 --> 00:06:05.280 for the people who have imposed themselves on us. 00:06:05.420 --> 00:06:09.000 collecting money for the enemy, so to speak. 00:06:10.620 --> 00:06:12.240 And if that's worse enough, 00:06:13.220 --> 00:06:15.160 not only are they seen as traitors, 00:06:15.360 --> 00:06:16.480 but exploiters, 00:06:16.580 --> 00:06:19.240 because tax collectors were expected 00:06:19.240 --> 00:06:21.520 to put a quote-unquote surcharge 00:06:21.520 --> 00:06:23.879 on the Roman tax, 00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:25.780 and they would line their pockets. 00:06:25.780 --> 00:06:32.560 It was a very lucrative job. 00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:38.459 And so Jesus walks by Matthew. 00:06:39.180 --> 00:06:40.579 This is the same Matthew 00:06:40.579 --> 00:06:41.959 that wrote this gospel. 00:06:43.259 --> 00:06:44.759 He's got a shady background. 00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:49.439 He walks by Matthew, 00:06:49.439 --> 00:06:49.879 and he says, 00:06:49.959 --> 00:06:50.500 follow me, 00:06:50.699 --> 00:06:52.279 and Matthew gets up 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:53.139 and follows him. 00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:55.759 And then in verse 10, 00:06:55.879 --> 00:06:57.000 the next thing we see 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.519 is that they're at a house, 00:06:58.519 --> 00:07:00.399 at a table 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:02.139 with a bunch of other tax collectors 00:07:02.139 --> 00:07:02.659 and sinners. 00:07:03.180 --> 00:07:05.339 But what Matthew doesn't tell us, 00:07:05.459 --> 00:07:07.000 because he's being kind of humble, 00:07:08.319 --> 00:07:09.039 Luke does. 00:07:09.939 --> 00:07:10.779 And in Luke 5, 00:07:10.839 --> 00:07:11.819 what we learn is that 00:07:11.819 --> 00:07:14.159 when Jesus called Matthew, 00:07:14.680 --> 00:07:17.680 Matthew left everything 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.060 and followed Jesus. 00:07:19.719 --> 00:07:22.519 He left his lucrative job 00:07:23.180 --> 00:07:24.419 in the tax booth 00:07:24.419 --> 00:07:25.599 to follow Jesus. 00:07:25.600 --> 00:07:27.100 And for a tax collector, 00:07:27.220 --> 00:07:28.040 what that meant is 00:07:28.040 --> 00:07:29.660 there's no going back. 00:07:31.720 --> 00:07:33.680 And what Luke also tells us 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:35.780 is the house that we read about 00:07:35.780 --> 00:07:36.439 in Matthew, 00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:38.260 it's Matthew's house. 00:07:40.260 --> 00:07:42.740 He brings Jesus home. 00:07:44.220 --> 00:07:45.540 And it's a great feast, 00:07:45.680 --> 00:07:46.379 according to Luke, 00:07:46.520 --> 00:07:48.660 with a great many tax collectors 00:07:48.660 --> 00:07:49.980 and sinners. 00:07:51.080 --> 00:07:51.800 And so basically, 00:07:51.939 --> 00:07:53.500 what's going on in Matthew's house 00:07:53.500 --> 00:07:54.980 in verse 10 is, 00:07:55.220 --> 00:07:56.759 we have a first century 00:07:56.759 --> 00:07:59.160 Palestinian house party 00:07:59.160 --> 00:07:59.980 going on. 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:02.399 And I'm guessing 00:08:02.399 --> 00:08:03.420 they had the equivalent 00:08:03.420 --> 00:08:04.579 of the red solo cups 00:08:04.579 --> 00:08:05.040 going to. 00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:10.439 But what you need to say is, 00:08:10.579 --> 00:08:12.579 Jesus has placed himself 00:08:12.579 --> 00:08:13.180 with sinners.
