00:03:31.560 --> 00:03:34.960 Just a few years previous to our passage now, 00:03:35.060 --> 00:03:38.000 he was killed in a fight with the Philistines, 00:03:38.140 --> 00:03:39.400 he and his son. 00:03:40.819 --> 00:03:43.219 But there was another one in Israel. 00:03:44.020 --> 00:03:46.199 Another one who was also anointed king, 00:03:46.259 --> 00:03:47.780 even before the death of Saul. 00:07:01.240 --> 00:07:02.939 even during the reign of Saul, 00:07:03.419 --> 00:07:06.539 it was David who led out Israel in battle 00:07:06.539 --> 00:07:08.759 and brought them back in in battle. 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:12.000 It was David who had the real Lord's anointing, 00:07:12.319 --> 00:07:13.799 even during the reign of Saul. 00:07:15.560 --> 00:07:19.019 But this introduced a problem, you see, 00:07:19.500 --> 00:07:21.500 both the problem of succession 00:07:21.500 --> 00:07:23.099 and now a problem of geography. 00:07:23.100 --> 00:07:27.160 The elders want to go over to the side of David, 00:07:27.160 --> 00:07:29.960 but his kingdom is way down here in the south. 00:07:30.160 --> 00:07:32.820 How is he supposed to rule over these northern tribes 00:07:32.820 --> 00:07:34.100 if he's all the way down south? 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:36.420 He needs to get up and move. 00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:40.760 The most strategic city for ruling over 00:07:40.760 --> 00:07:42.140 this entire kingdom of Israel 00:07:42.140 --> 00:07:45.580 had to be a centrally located, well-fortified city. 00:07:45.579 --> 00:07:48.759 Ah, but there was a problem. 00:07:49.500 --> 00:07:51.879 For 00:08:09.419 and difficult to lay siege to. 00:08:09.560 --> 00:08:11.779 A city so well defended and so fortified 00:08:11.779 --> 00:08:13.899 that none of the previous conquests 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:16.019 were able to dislodge its inhabitants 00:08:16.019 --> 00:08:18.239 who were called Jebusites. 00:08:19.779 --> 00:08:21.279 Joshua 15, 63. 00:08:21.339 --> 00:08:23.039 Remember Joshua is, he comes in 00:08:23.039 --> 00:08:25.339 and he does the conquest over all of Israel 00:08:25.339 --> 00:08:27.019 or almost all of Israel. 00:08:27.779 --> 00:08:30.079 Joshua 15, 63 says that Judah 00:08:30.079 --> 00:08:32.299 could not dislodge the Jebusites 00:08:32.299 --> 00:08:34.559 who were living in Jerusalem. 00:08:35.500 --> 00:08:37.899 To this day, the Jebusites live there 00:08:37.899 --> 00:08:39.779 with the people of Judah. 00:08:40.220 --> 00:08:41.860 So they take over the whole area 00:08:41.860 --> 00:08:44.659 except this little citadel of the Jebusites. 00:08:44.899 --> 00:08:47.899 They stay surrounded by Israelites. 00:08:49.340 --> 00:08:50.699 Their presence there represented 00:08:50.699 --> 00:08:51.939 not only a threat to the safety 00:08:51.939 --> 00:08:53.120 of the Israelites in the area, 00:08:53.259 --> 00:08:54.980 but also the fact that God's promise 00:08:54.980 --> 00:08:56.720 to give that whole area to Israel 00:08:56.720 --> 00:08:58.299 was still unfulfilled. 00:08:59.439 --> 00:09:01.220 Now the people were united 00:09:01.220 --> 00:09:04.919 and that promise had to take a step forward. 00:09:04.919
