And James shared last week this quote, that waiting time is not wasting time. 00:00:46.119 --> 00:00:48.519 That waiting time is not wasting time. 00:00:48.520 --> 00:00:55.480 And because it's in is even better. 00:03:20.939 --> 00:03:23.040 We don't have to be afraid to approach God. 00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:31.519 We can boldly go to him, not just as an intern going to CEO, but as a child going to a father, as a friend going to a friend. 00:03:32.079 --> 00:03:34.159 And we see this in the second half of Genesis 18. 00:03:35.319 --> 00:03:40.079 Here, God has some pretty difficult news to share with Abraham. 00:03:41.139 --> 00:03:47.340 It's some pretty heavy news that he will go and destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:03:47.340 --> 00:03:51.640 God is going to rain down fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah. 00:03:52.319 --> 00:04:02.199 But we see in this, Abraham has the privilege to pray boldly, to go to God, stand between God and Sodom and intercede on their behalf. 00:04:02.379 --> 00:04:03.800 Pray to God for mercy. 00:04:03.800 --> 00:04:12.040 Because Abraham is someone known by God, in relationship with God, he has the ability to plead with God to spare the two cities. in this passage is that we have access to God in relation to God as friends of God. 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:23.819 We'll pick up from verse 16 here. 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:28.639 It says, Then the men We talked about Abraham's hospitality last week to his guests. 00:07:46.819 --> 00:07:51.740 Abraham prepared bread, yogurt, slaughtered a calf, had beef for his visitors. 00:07:52.579 --> to the next verse, verse 17 also. 00:08:20.420 --> 00:08:25.520 So the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 00:08:26.379 --> 00:08:28.360 Now notice how God phrases this. 00:08:28.439 --> 00:08:31.640 He doesn't say, Shall I tell Abraham? 00:08:32.240 --> 00:08:33.740 Shall I tell him what I'm about to do? 00:08:33.820 --> 00:08:35.060 He says it differently. 00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:36.860 Shall I hide from Abraham? 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:41.820 It's as if Abraham had this right to know what God was about to do. 00:08:41.879 --> 00:08:43.100 And shall I no expectation that we share every detail with your life. 00:09:08.379 --> 00:09:09.540 We might choose to do that. 00:09:10.360 --> 00:09:17.620 But if she went to Thailand and didn't tell me that one day I just woke up and she was gone in Thailand, I'd be pretty surprised. 00:09:17.620 --> 00:09:23.480 And we have that relationship, that closeness and intimacy where that default is to share. 00:09:40.379 And that's why in the Bible, for example, James chapter 2, verse 23, Abraham is called a friend of God. 00:09:40.580 --> 00:09:41.919 He's a friend of God. 00:09:41.919 --> 00:09:49.519 And that closeness, that friendship, relationship exists because God chose to make a covenant with Abraham. 00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:53.819 God said, Shall I hide from Abraham what I'm about to do? 00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:56.860 And in verse 19, For I have chosen him. 00:09:57.139 --> 00:10:02.439 I've chosen to make him a great nation, make his descendants more numerous than the stars. 00:10:40.740 In John chapter 15, Jesus says, No longer do I call you servants, but I have called you friends. 00:10:41.180 --> 00:10:45.620 For all that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you. 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:48.900 You did not choose me, but I chose you. 00:10:49.560 --> 00:10:54.520 We are friends of God, adopted as children of God, because we're chosen by him. 00:10:54.600 he'd tell us to knock it off. 00:11:14.519 --> 00:11:18.500 At some point, he'd say, Stop wasting my time because you have nothing important to say to me. 00:11:19.220 --> 00:11:20.960 But God isn't 00:12:11.860 Sarah will have a son. 00:12:11.860 --> 00:12:14.840 Also, God discloses punishment. 00:12:15.519 --> 00:12:19.580 He will destroy Sodom on account of their grievous sin. 00:12:19.580 --> 00:12:23.200 And we won't get into the weeds of what Sodom's sin is today. 00:12:23.400 --> 00:12:25.240 It's more clear in the next chapter. 00:12:25.879 --> 00:12:28.860 But today, we will just see that God deals with sin. 00:12:29.000 --> 00:12:31.900 And when he does, his punishment is just. 00:12:31.899 --> 00:12:40.059 In verse 20, the Lord says that he will go down and see if Sodom's sin is Thessalonians were warned that a day is coming when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels and flaming fire, 00:13:56.419 --> 00:14:02.959 inflicting vengeance on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 00:14:02.959 --> 00:14:10.539 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might. 00:14:10.539 --> 00:14:14.659 This is the heavy truth. 00:14:15.939 --> 00:14:17.319 But this is the word of God. 00:14:18.219 --> 00:14:19.699 And we have a choice to make. 00:14:20.279 --> 00:14:25.219 We can hear this and choose to walk away and say, I will never worship a God like that. 00:14:25.299 --> 00:14:29.379 I can't wrap my head around how a God like that can love us. 00:14:29.379 --> 00:14:34.179 I encourage us to follow instead in Abraham's footsteps. 00:14:34.820 --> 00:14:36.279 He doesn't fully understand. 00:14:36.399 --> 00:14:39.139 He doesn't see the full picture, but he trusts his friend. 00:14:39.220 --> 00:14:42.379 He trusts the God that he's walked with for 24 years. 00:14:42.740 --> 00:14:44.439 And he holds on to God's goodness. 00:14:45.019 --> not the judge of all the earth do what is just? 00:14:54.820 --> 00:14:56.420 That's what Abraham believes. 00:14:57.260 --> 00:15:05.700 God's justice move Abraham, not to turn away from God, but to run towards God and pray and intercede for Sodom. 00:15:06.680 --> 00:15:08.700 Abraham doesn't doubt God's goodness. 00:15:09.379 --> 00:15:11.300 Instead, he appeals to it. 00:15:11.580 --> 00:15:12.879 He appeals to God's heart. 00:15:13.500 --> 00:15:16.660 And for that reason, Abraham begins to pray. 00:15:17.200 --> 00:15:21.740 He prays to intercede for Sodom, to plead for mercy for Sodom. 00:15:21.740 --> 00:15:28.379 And that's what we see next, that we have access to God in prayer, to the righteous judge in prayer. 00:15:28.960 --> 00:15:30.200 Look at verse 24. 00:15:30.779 --> 00:15:31.000 It says, 00:15:31.220 --> 00:15:36.759 So the man turned from there and went towards Sodom, but Abraham stood still before the Lord. 00:15:37.299 --> 00:15:39.259 Then Abraham drew near. 00:15:40.100 --> 00:15:40.700 He drew near. 00:15:41.279 --> 00:15:45.519 That's essentially what prayer is, to draw near to God and speak with him. 00:15:46.379 --> 00:15:51.000 And like Abraham, we have that privilege to draw near, to approach God and pray. 00:15:51.960 --> 00:15:54.860 Abraham demonstrates for us here a good posture for prayer. 00:15:55.399 --> 00:15:59.740 He prays We are his creation. 00:16:20.039 --> 00:16:23.539 We're sinful human beings standing before a holy creator. 00:16:24.220 --> 00:16:29.620 The gap between us and God is like the gap between an intern and a CEO, but infinitely greater than that. 00:16:30.560 --> 00:16:35.080 And so what right does Abraham have to make any demands from God? 00:16:35.080 --> 00:16:38.720 Abraham approaches with reverence. 00:16:39.220 --> 00:16:42.320 At the same time, Abraham is bold. 00:16:42.800 --> 00:16:48.639 He's bold because of the relationship and friendship, that intimacy he has with God. 00:16:48.639 --> 00:16:51.439 He knows that he has a way to God. 00:16:51.519 --> 00:16:55.139 The door is open to his father and friend. 00:16:56.039 --> 00:17:01.299 And so Abraham, he draws near to God to intercede for Sodom and plead for mercy on their behalf. 00:17:01.299 --> 00:17:04.299 In verse 23, Abraham asks God, 00:17:04.799 --> 00:17:07.819 Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 00:17:08.460 --> 00:17:10.680 Suppose there are 50 righteous in the city. 00:17:10.779 --> 00:17:15.579 Will you sweep away the place and not spare it for the 50 righteous who are in it?
